I have a LE OLED and a glossy OLED. I cannot see a difference in the dark, both are equal in black levels micro-contrast and also color wise. I've tried very hard, but I simply can't see any difference. I've read that LE has BOE panel and BOE panel is closer to the glass than Samsung, so the etched effect is reduced in Deck Limited Edition. I wonder if that's what causes the Samsung Etched to be so different from the glossy one, because you're the second to report this. My experience pretty much matches Taki Udon and not Retro Games Corp. What I can tell is that when TV is on in front of me I can see myself in the glossy but not in the LE. I think most people are doing the direct light test, but that's not the real test, you should blast a flashlight at your face (as you're watching TV or facing a window in a bus) and then see the steam deck's screen. In this case (of indirect light), which looks better?
I got the glossy oled display, and I am glad with my decision. I normally play the Steam Deck in a dark room so either model would look good in the dark. I chose that model because I wanted to upgrade the ssd with the 2tb ssd and it was cheaper.
I’ve used both and FOR ME hands down I prefer the Matt screen. I think if you put them side to side and gear your brain to compare you will come to the conclusion the glossy is better coz you’re looking for specific things. However for daily usage and what’s most important, immersion, for which must have less distractions the Matt is better. I hate nothing more than my own reflection in the screen. I prefer the Matt so much that I’ve now put a Matt screen protector on my Switch Oled. Sure it’s slightly muted but the benefits out way the very slight change. One thing I did notice about the Sgeamdeck over the Switch oled with Matt is the higher brightness on the Deck still makes the colours pop but the switch brightness is much less. If you’re struggling to decide which to get and you have a switch oled try a Matt protector on that and see how it goes. Bear in mind though the steam deck Matt is way better than a regular screen protector Matt.
I prefer glossy, not a fan of a 'matte' looking screen, also dont care much for its softer image. Youre the only person ive seen to share the biggest benefit on why you may want to purchase the etched version, which is how well it handles smaller reflections and motion, the way it handles light reflections is far from a benefit for my taste.
The older Version of the Steam Deck (etched glass) had better Colors for my taste, it felt more vibrant in comparison to the glossy version. With the Oled it is much more difficult, i am so torn between the two. I don't want to order both of them😅
@Carinthian_Oak could always make your display more or less vibrant to your liking thanks to the new update 😁 no display is perfect. They vary unit to unit, and LE has an entirely different brand oled altogether. So I'd really only consider whether the other stuff is worth it for your use case. Like whether a smaller shell from the case would be useful for you for traveling, skipping the installation of a larger ssd, some of the benefits of an etched listed here. If you were happy with your etched lcd, maybe stick with etched. After selling my LCD Deck and getting an OLED, I went with a plain tempered glass, and I enjoy it much more, even in my apartment that lets in a ton of natural light during the day.

I decided either I was getting an LE model or not at all, so that decision was made for me. If someday I need to do a repair on the screen, maybe I'll turn mine into a glossy LE hybrid...
A few comparisons suggest the anti glare screen protector is worse than having the anti etch from the start because you’re adding another layer of diffusion to the panel. I’m sure it’s fine, but if you’re obsessing like me then I’d go for the anti etch at that point.
There's also screen manufacture differences. Some models have screens produced by Samsung, and others, BOE. I'd love to see a comparison between the two. Also, have you tried placing a glass screen protector over your 1tb version? I personally noticed a difference, but none of the reviewers seem to be demonstrating what that looks like.
Please do, curious to know how that will affect the etched screen contrast. I have SD OLED with matte screen & am thinking of getting a glossy screen protector.
Hi, I bought a used Steam Deck OLED, I don't know how it's possible but I confirmed it's a 512GB model with the serial number, but the screen is not glossy, it's matte. I don't know if there's a possibility to add this option when purchasing on Steam but... that's it! I would have preferred it glossy but...
I have a glossy phone screen And comparing them, yes, the image does look slightly less clear However, when I'm on the bus or in my room with the blinds open, I get a more consistent image over the whole screen, rather than having lines and boxes everywhere Also (mainly), I don't like looking in the mirror, and I don't want my steam deck reminding me
I have a glossy screen OLED Switch and an etched Steam Deck OLED. I've also tried a matte screen protector on my Steam Deck. Here's my conclusion. Anti-glare (higher is better): Level 1: Glossy Level 2: Etched Level 3: Matte Screen clarity (higher is better): Level 1: Matte Level 2: Etched Level 3: Glossy The glossy screen suffers from glare whenever I use it in public transit. I can't control the light environment like at home. Therefore, anti-glare is important to me. The matte screen protector does the best job at anti-glare. The sacrifice made with a matte screen is the clarity. The screen looks foggy, which reduces the color pop. Also, the texts are slightly blurry. The etched screen glare level is between the glossy and matte. It gives enough glare reduction without a noticeable drop in clarity. I was satisfied with the etched screen, so I removed the matte protector from my Steam Deck. I would only recommend the matte screen protector to those who bought the glossy screen and started gaming outdoors frequently like me. If you haven't bought a Steam Deck yet and love gaming outdoors, consider the etched model. Switching the storage from 512 GB to 1 TB only costs slightly less than simply getting the higher tier.
@@patricktim872 Personally, I don't use any screen protector. I hardly use the touch screen thanks to the trackpads. Whenever I touch the screen, I make conscious effort to avoid scratching it with my nails. Remember, screen protectors primarily shields against scratches, not shock. It's great for phones since we constantly touch the screen. Not that necessary for the Steam Deck.
@@Quanziam great, that's exactly what I was thinking... I'm about to buy my deck now and I'm not really keen on opening it up to change the SSD so the 1TB option is the one I'm most inclined to buy... but I had a lot of doubts about the screen... but I think I've cleared it up now... thanks.
@@patricktim872 Before you buy it, understand that most games will run well with a microSD card. Only select few AAA games benefit significantly from the SSD speed. Unless you plan to game outside, you should probably get the glossy screen with more vibrant colours.
Yeah I own both 512 LCD and OLED, i see how the matte looks foggy mostly, and it nice to have no reflect image on it but want tos ee the colors why I got an Oled, with how my one eye is need it show me the colors and be brighter for me. I first thought i made the wrong choice not going for the 1TB, but can change that in the 512 one i get one i have all the tools for it just missing the ssd and can go 1Tb or 2TB. I will enjyo it til the next oen come out though if they had come out with purple version i woudl gotten that.
Have you ever seen a professional gaming monitor with a glossy screen? I don't think so:). In my opinion, both are beautiful, glossy and glare:) Steam Deck is the best End of discussion.
Did you try a tempered glass screen protector on the edged 1TB model? I didn't even know there was a screen difference, I wanted the bigger storage without open the whole thing and replace it. First thing I do on any of my mobile devices is put a screen protector right out of the box.
I found that neither the 512 or 1TB were suitable. A 2TB would have to be fitted at some point so purchasing a 512 made the most economical sense, I am also not a fan of the matt Screens either.
@@TonyCassara I wonder if the differences in color reproduction between BOE & Samsung are also negligible. BOE can be overclocked to 120hz which might be a more significant factor than everything else, as long as it’s safe of course. I suspect they limited it to 90 to keep it consistent with Samsung & to be more battery efficient, not because the BOE panel can’t handle it
Apologies for the very silly question but am I getting it right - the deck in the upper half is the anti-glare, the other one is glossy? As the one in the upper half looks more vibrant to me...
You can use any but you're paying for the upgraded screen and any protector on it will probably degrade the viewing quality a little bit. A glossy would be fine, a matte/anti-scratch would be bad.
@@TonyCassara then should I pick the glossy model? Usually I like keeping my handhelds screens clean with no scratches that’s why I always put screen protectors on them first.

Colors ate in fact less detailed, not by much tho but the diference is there. Honestly i wanted 1tb but well... Whatever i guess 512 will do
@@TonyCassara It seems more and more likely that this is a design flaw that affects all OLED decks. The silver lining is that maybe Valve will address this issue. I really want an official DIY fix.

The glossy screen whether lcd or oled always has the better contrast. Talking about reflections is a moot point cos it's not a component of contrast so to speak. When a reflection sometimes gets into your screen that it actually bothers you, you just tilt your screen slightly to avoid that reflection. Just like we how we use our phones. Having the etched glass that reduces contrast even by the slightest defeats having the advantages of an oled screen in the first place.
i personally dont understand how people prefer the glossy screen. it obviously looks amazing but the reflections are just so distracting compared to the etched screen
I mean, if ure playing under a light hard enough to be annoying, its gonna be annoying no matter which screen do u have, so why going for one that mess up the colors? Also, how can u really have that many problems with the light? Where are u playing? In my 2 years with a switch oled (which has a glossy screen) I’ve never experienced any reflection issues. If there was a light or something reflecting on my screen, its just as simple as turn your hands a bit to not point the screen on that direction, I mean, its almost as small as a smartphone, its not that difficult to control the light.
Too be honest, I CANT TELL THE FUCKING DIFFERENCE MAN. The fact anti glare and non anti glare looks the same when im playing games i just dont think its that big of a deal.
Dude could you really not take 20 seconds to create overlays and label which is Matte or Glossy? I understand that you verbally stated which is which but common..
My first steam deck was matte and I regretted it just because of how it looked with my daughter got it dirty and it was a bit harder to get the screen truly clean. Got glossy this time and while ofc it gets smudges from fingers, it’s easier to clean quickly. We don’t have two Oled in our house yet to compare, but I’ll be curious to see if the matte is less crisp once my son opens his for Xmas.
Etched glass over oled literally makes no sense, it'll have screen glow effect which makes it look like a regular LCD and the blacks will always be slightly grey
Just think your phone or your pc monitor or your 4k tv. Your monitor and TV are etched, not gloss. Etched is so much better . People will always be dumb
Honestly I don't see much of a difference in the images. I think if you purchased the matte screen you would never regret your purchase because you would have nothing to compare it too.
glossy 100%, etched version is getting exposed and the worse buy. get the glossy then if you need to add a matted screen protector for the exact same effect for $10
If you could only buy one then always go for the 512 as even if you could experience only one you'd know that a better display exists if you went with the 1 TB one no matter how miniscule the difference might be.
i dont think this has anything to do with the etched or gloss. pretty sure both these steamdecks have different displays. 1tb with boe and 512 with samsung.

@@MangaAnimeSekai you may have bought an LCD deck not an OLED or the deck came with a screen protector.
@@TonyCassara I can tell the difference between an LCD and an OLED screen.
@@MangaAnimeSekai then it’s probably a screen protector fam
@@TonyCassara maybe... If it's the case it's applied perfectly
For me personally I got the anti glare model since I will be taking it with me and I want to use it with no fear of any reflection issues .
You will love it!
I have a glossy phone screen
And comparing them, yes, the image does look slightly less clear
However, when I'm on the bus or in my room with the blinds open, I get a more consistent image over the whole screen, rather than having lines and boxes everywhere
Also (mainly), I don't like looking in the mirror, and I don't want my steam deck reminding me
@@CYXNIGHT all good reasons to get the matte!
@@TonyCassara I have a glossy screen protector for it, so imma give it a shot anyways!
Tony which screen protector do you recommend for the glossy?
Spigen and DBrand, the JSAUX is also good if you want cheaper!
@@TonyCassara thank you!
I have a glossy screen OLED Switch and an etched Steam Deck OLED. I've also tried a matte screen protector on my Steam Deck. Here's my conclusion.
Anti-glare (higher is better):
Level 1: Glossy
Level 2: Etched
Level 3: Matte
Screen clarity (higher is better):
Level 1: Matte
Level 2: Etched
Level 3: Glossy
The glossy screen suffers from glare whenever I use it in public transit.
Switching the storage from 512 GB to 1 TB only costs slightly less than simply getting the higher tier.
so which screen protector would you recommend for those with OLED anti-glare etched glass?
Like how you say don't matter which you get they are both good and just enjoy your buy, and yes when the new steam deck come just pick the one you didn't get before. I will enjyo it til the next oen come out though if they had come out with purple version i woudl gotten that.
Regretted getting the Matte with the LED. Went with Glossy on OLED and bumped to 2 tb
🤝
I get matte as it's easier to clean. both dust and fingerprints, though I rarely touch my deck screen.
Have you ever seen a professional gaming monitor with a glossy screen? I don't think so:). In my opinion, both are beautiful, glossy and glare:) Steam Deck is the best End of discussion.
Have you ever seen professional gamer playing purely on steam deck, i tought so too 😅
I've seen you posting this stupid shit on 3 different videos now
Only reason I got the etched was because of the LE, if there was no LE I would have gotten the Glossy.
Just by your video you can easily tell the Glossy is better.
if you put a glossy glass screen protected on the anti glare does it fix the solution?
Not really, there are other videos that show what that looks like and it becomes a little more obfuscated.
wow. straight bangers.
Obsess brother. Im right there with you
Could you check the manufacturer for each panel in terminal to see if they’re the same or different in each model?
They’re both Samsung
@@TonyCassara I wonder if the differences in color reproduction between BOE & Samsung are also negligible. BOE can be overclocked to 120hz which might be a more significant factor than everything else, as long as it’s safe of course. I suspect they limited it to 90 to keep it consistent with Samsung & to be more battery efficient, not because the BOE panel can’t handle it
Apologies for the very silly question but am I getting it right - the deck in the upper half is the anti-glare, the other one is glossy? As the one in the upper half looks more vibrant to me...
Yes top is anti glare and bottom is glossy. To each their own, but in my testing the glossy is the highest contrast of the two.
wanted 1tb and I won't be taking it apart so only one option.
There is slight difference in the whites, that and some colors are just SLIGHTLY SLIGHTLY washed out with no screen glare
If I buy the Anti-glare steam deck could I use any glass screen protector or does it have to be anti glare screen protector??
You can use any but you're paying for the upgraded screen and any protector on it will probably degrade the viewing quality a little bit. A glossy would be fine, a matte/anti-scratch would be bad.
@@TonyCassara then should I pick the glossy model? Usually I like keeping my handhelds screens clean with no scratches that’s why I always put screen protectors on them first.
@@KeybladeMaster64 personally if i were you id go for glossy and get a screen protector so you have peace of mind.
I own an oled TV and I can't stand how reflective it is even in my dark basement. Got the etched glass SD because I couldn't imagine trying to play with a mirror for a screen everywhere I go.😂
I just got a glossy and put a matte screen protector on it and its great!
I got the 512 GB version and bought a 2 TB WD SSD from Ali Express on Black Friday. It cost me less than the 1TB OLED version, the screen is better, I have more space and I even have a spare 512GB SSD left
Haven’t watch the video yet and my mind it’s set to glossy just like my oled tvs n monitors.
Which monitors are u using?
Matte 100%.. I'll bet most of you that bought the 512Gb also bought the matte screen protector.
I got glossy for the better contrast and so i can upgrade to a 2tb ssd.
I got it because using a anti glare screen protector made me exactly what he said...
Less sharp but not smooth really which... Is weird, the only way to rly understand it is actually seeing.
Colors ate in fact less detailed, not by much tho but the diference is there.
Honestly i wanted 1tb but well... Whatever i guess 512 will do
Can you compare without any screen protector also
No screen protectors were used
Do they both have the audio jack issue?
Yes unfortunately
@@TonyCassara It seems more and more likely that this is a design flaw that affects all OLED decks. The silver lining is that maybe Valve will address this issue. I really want an official DIY fix.
@@henrymelo I got the LE and not sure about the audio jack issue. I did test it with my hyper x headset and seemed fine. Does it effect all headphones that are plugged in?
@@bob-rob no not all of them. I don't know much about headphones so I have no idea why this happens only with some headphones/earbuds. In my case I have two earbuds which when I plug in I can hear the buzzing, but then I also have a Bose QC45 which when I plug in there is no problem at all.
Having the etched glass that reduces contrast even by the slightest defeats having the advantages of an oled screen in the first place.
good luck tilting the screen away from your face
i personally dont understand how people prefer the glossy screen. it obviously looks amazing but the reflections are just so distracting compared to the etched screen
Then etched is perfect for you! It’s all personal preference.
I watched this whole video and I still don't know which one is better.
@@ralphiecifaretto8961 sometimes you gotta just experience them both to know
I mean, if ure playing under a light hard enough to be annoying, its gonna be annoying no matter which screen do u have, so why going for one that mess up the colors? Also, how can u really have that many problems with the light? Where are u playing? In my 2 years with a switch oled (which has a glossy screen) I’ve never experienced any reflection issues. If there was a light or something reflecting on my screen, its just as simple as turn your hands a bit to not point the screen on that direction, I mean, its almost as small as a smartphone, its not that difficult to control the light.
face reflection
What's the game at 1.04?
I believe it's Sea Of Stars. Fun game
@411sponge72 thank you
"whom" ... srry 😅 and thank you for the details obsession 👍
Too be honest, I CANT TELL THE FUCKING DIFFERENCE MAN. The fact anti glare and non anti glare looks the same when im playing games i just dont think its that big of a deal.
There are glossy screenprotector which doesn't reflect that much.
Glossy > matte
i hate glossy screens, reflection is killing it for me.
I can't tell the difference from your screens. It seems to be a bit nitpicky.
i dont think we will be getting steam deck 2 after seeing this release, maybe the following year
For sure at least another 18 months or so
I bought the matte it’s amazing.
I’m glad you enjoy it!
Dude could you really not take 20 seconds to create overlays and label which is Matte or Glossy? I understand that you verbally stated which is which but common..
Can't make it too easy for people to steal my content 😘
My first steam deck was matte and I regretted it just because of how it looked with my daughter got it dirty and it was a bit harder to get the screen truly clean.
Got glossy this time and while ofc it gets smudges from fingers, it’s easier to clean quickly. We don’t have two Oled in our house yet to compare, but I’ll be curious to see if the matte is less crisp once my son opens his for Xmas.
You realize you can just increase the contrast on the edged, right?...
👍
Etched glass over oled literally makes no sense, it'll have screen glow effect which makes it look like a regular LCD and the blacks will always be slightly grey
Just think your phone or your pc monitor or your 4k tv. Your monitor and TV are etched, not gloss. Etched is so much better . People will always be dumb
I use a LGC2 as my monitor and another for TV, both are glossy. Either is fine, who cares.
Glossy all the way
Great video
Honestly I don't see much of a difference in the images. I think if you purchased the matte screen you would never regret your purchase because you would have nothing to compare it too.
Ipa ;)
glossy 100%, etched version is getting exposed and the worse buy. get the glossy then if you need to add a matted screen protector for the exact same effect for $10
Do you think you get the same quality with protector as on the valves etched screen?
If you could only buy one then always go for the 512 as even if you could experience only one you'd know that a better display exists if you went with the 1 TB one no matter how miniscule the difference might be.
I’m only buying one when Valve fix the audio socket issue, hopefully soon
Never ever want matts on oled
Steam dropped the ball on this one
Quack??
Can you send me one
Based and glossy pilled.
i dont think this has anything to do with the etched or gloss. pretty sure both these steamdecks have different displays. 1tb with boe and 512 with samsung.
nope its a samsung on the etched too, i ran the command in konsole and it spat out the corresponding number for a samsung oled.
@@TonyCassara good to know
Yeah not seeing difference in this video
Anyone who argues for matte are missing a few brain cells.
I find these videos annoying. The glossy one is what we are used to. The matte one is unreal creamy amazing goodness. These videos dump on the etched screen time and time again. It's 100% the nicer option.
Never want trash matte on an oled screen
I seriously hope you’re joking. Or you’re lying to yourself which is even worse.
Wrong
Copium off the charts. Let me know when Sony, LG, or Samsung use matted over glossy on their high end TVs. We’ll die waiting 😂
@@CJP.-pq3krWell, Samsung showed a matte screen at this CES 2024 (for the high emd OLED) 😂😂😂
Yes, people are complaining about it (and yes, I also dislike it)
