Jake Hudson: Stuff that you are trying to reach or that can impede your progress. If you want a player to jump to a certain platform to progress, make sure they can actually see that platform. If they can't, then they won't know where to go. Likewise, if you want a player to have to avoid a thwomp, make sure they can see the thwomp. Otherwise, they won't know to look out for it.
Since secrets are supposed to be hidden, it's okay to put them offscreen. But it's good have some sort of indication that a secret is there. A hole in the ceiling, a far-off platform, a trail of coins, etc. would all be good ways to guide observant players to offscreen secrets.

To go along with this point, Red Hot Elevator Ride starts Mario in a small room where the lava begins to rise. It's not that hard to escape the lava and reach the pipe, but this room is useful for showing that rising lava will be a prominent feature in the rest of the level.
Then, we enter the room with the hot and presumably red elevator. As there is no other platform in the area, we hop onto the device and get a quick explanation of how the elevator works (by tilting the controller). We're now given a small space to figure out how to handle the controls before moving on the the hazards.
It's a simple concept, but it's rather effective at conveying level mechanics. Because of this, little introduction segments like these are strongly recommended to keep the player in the know.

Here something else that I think is really iconic to traditional stages:
Add a progressive Power-Up at the beginning of the Level. To get to the Power-Up use the Core Element of the stage while not being in Danger. The progressive Power-Up should also be based around the Background, Elements and Theme.

Hey Ceave, around 9:30 you are showing the viewers the idea that it is useful to introduce your design choices in a level first before letting the player encounter them. This is a fundamental key-element for building a level in my opinion but the thing why I am writing this comment is that the bullet blasters aren’t really introduced to the player here. Due to the symmetrical design and the fact that the player is never able to actually touch them or die to them, they have more like an aesthetic reason to them. They don’t really get recognized as an “enemy” more than just some decoration because they are never in reach of the players doings. Also, I don’t think it’s preferable to introduce more than 1 idea at once and you are actually (after removing the fire ball) introducing 2/3 here. The Flame Throwers above, the bullet blasters(maybe) and the platform on tracks! For me, I prefer more simpler designs. One aspect of the level on one screen at the time. I don’t say it’s bad(!!) but I love your videos, always watching all of them, so I thought I could maybe leave some of my input. Have a good one!

Great video! I really appreciate that you show examples of issues in your example stage and how to fix them.
If I may, I'd like to add that I feel like challenges and breather spaces are also defined by their PENALTIES FOR FAILURE and their REWARDS FOR SUCCESS.
For failing to make a jump, solve a puzzle, etc. there's a variety of different consequences you can execute in SMM:
Lose time (standard fail a jump, so you're back on the ground and have to jump again)
Miss a missable bonus area (say you had to make a jump on a paratroopa perfectly to get to an optional room)
Miss a collectable (if you've got a bunch of
Miss a powerup (block is positioned so a powerup falls into the abyss if not grabbed in time)
Take damage (any sort of enemy or projectile hits you)
Lose a life (Bottomless pit, crushing)
Whereas completing a section gives us various rewards:
    Make progress towards level completion
    Gain a collectable
    Gain a powerup
    Find a bonus area
It's the contrast and severity of these that seems to separate the breathing spaces from the challenge spaces!
