This is intended as a tool for GUESSING the gender. It is not intended as a guaranteed analysis as each individual bird is different. Other factors must be included. Age, behavior, and color must be considered.
Pelvic exams are not 100% accurate. Some young Hens will have a more narrow pelvis before they reach breeding age. The shape of the birds head (square vs round) is also NOT a good indicator of gender. We have bred females with Round and Square heads. This is simply a genetic trait and nothing more.
DNA is always the most accurate way of Gender Determination.
Nice birds
Soooooo much cute!
I’ve watched the video several times, and I’m just starting to see the differences you point out. This is so helpful! I have a young bird that I raised from a chick and I’m almost positive its female. I compare her to the mourning doves I see at my feeder and she is very slender and smaller in stature. From observing the birds at the feeder, it seems like the males have a slightly blue/iridescent haze on their head, while the females do not. But when you pointed out that they have a feminine look, that completely made sense to me. I’m about 95% sure I have a female. Can Mourning Doves mix with Ringnecks? Do they have viable offspring? That gender-tested wild pied male at the end is gorgeous!
Ringneck Doves and Mourning Doves can be paired up and even breed. Their offspring will be infertile however.
Good possible insight for gender testing. I'll definitely still do gender testing, but this helps
My completely white dove coos but never does the bow coo.
Bow cooing depends on age. An older female may or may not bow coo. Males that are breeding age will Bow coo constantly.
