Franklin Mosley as Major-General Stanley in The Pittsburgh Savoyards' 2022 production of The Pirates of Penzance. From a livestreamed performance recorded on April 9, 2022 at the Andrew Carnegie Free Library & Music Hall, Carnegie, PA.
The flipped gestures for "mauser rifle and javelin" got me. I'm surprised, I don't think I've seen that joke before. Well done!
I don't think I ever got what kind of rifle it was before.
Hearing the words very clearly here.
Ha! I missed that! 3:19
@@KittyStarlight in the original versions the lyric is Chassepot rifle and it was changed to the more well known Mauser rifle which most modern productions use.
I’ve seen the flipped Mauser and Javelin in the NYGASP production!
Just waiting for them to have the Mauser being the outdated one, and the Javelin being the anti-tank missile.
Anyone who can sing this song simply deserves an actual medal
Yes! Try to keep up and I cannot :-D
I will try! And I might fail... but I'll keep practicing!
With lyrics in front of me I can do it. But my god that 4th and 5th verse is an absolute killer to remember for me
@@meatballg8655 Orange!
anyone who sings this song should get a free hire as an auctioneer
I most say this is probably the most active version of modern mayor general i could not imagine doing it and dance
Which is why he's a bit shit, ain't he?
I like how they switched up the costume. Usually, the Major-General is dressed in a naval uniform like an admiral. But here he's wearing something you might find in the British Army at the turn of the century :)
Also, excellent work with the song!
That's... the opposite of the joke. It's Gilbert and Sullivan... satire... they're supposed to make him look a little like an idiot, thus the navel uniform.
@@graysonbaker1744 a) That would make no sense, since uniforms are issued by the branch of service, b) That doesn't even make sense from a joke/character perspective, since the song indicates he knows basically everything he needs to know about being a major-general except for leading men into actual battle (i.e. dressing properly would 100% be a thing he knew how to do)
@@graysonbaker1744 Even a marine can't find his way into another branch's uniform.
“ORANGE!”
“…..no.”
Iconic
Sporange, an old synonym for sporangium, a botanical term.
But when he was looking for a rhyme for "strategy "and she came out with" sat a gee "he said "I always believed in you." I loved that.
Door hinge.
@@stephaniemay792 She had a whole character arc, and I adore her.
These guys seem like they're having a great time, particularly the major-general. That's always fun to see in a performance.
1:42 the choreography is making an isosceles triangle while the lyrics talk about the square root of hypotenuse
i love this so much, and i don't know why.
A 45degree right angled triangle is isoceles. Easy explanation.
It can be isoceles with a right angle
And then the macarena in the last chorus hahaha
@@Beardychielrecalling a cheerful fact about the square of the hypotenuse...
the multiple of said hypotenuse is irrational as opposed to its rational sides
what an amazing performance! It's almost like you Americans speak English! But seriously though, leading man, you couldn't ask for more. He nails it on every count. Right down to proper English pomposity.
This is my favorite rendition of this song. Not as fast as George Rose, or as lovingly buffonish as the version in the '85 Stradford Festival, but the fact that I can even understand what the Major General is saying and the humor between him and one of the girls really elevates the performance.
Orange!
Great performance! Anyone able to remember and perform all those lines live is awesome. A little slow compared to what most people are probably used to hearing (the 1985 version by Douglas Chamberlain), though the end brought the speed.
Recorded versions are generally faster than the tempo indicated in the score, due to the limited amount of space there is to fit everything on a record/tape/CD.
if you have been training it for months it is bound to be learned to the point of reciting in ones sleep. have watched an older version that i found better too.
but his costume seems off, like its too small, both the jacket and helmet looks to at least be 1 size too small.
It was better before he got to the part where he did it faster.
More fun hearing/watching him pretend to come up with the words. 😉
Good acting as well as good singing.
Less good at the end but still good.
I've seen better but I've definitely seen worse.
This was good. ^___^
👏👏👏👏👏
Also they don't all come up with a semi-legitimate reason to do it again at the end.
This one did. ☺️
@@inquisitorwalmarius6650 :glad, that you are so enthused about everything!
The orchestration is wonderful! Stanley certainly has enthusiasm. I would have liked it to be a little faster, but I can't deny that it's a new take on the song! Huzzah! The reprise was spot-on!
actually he is singing it at the speed as written in the score - I'm sure you are thinking of the recording, which was sped up in order to make it all fit onto one record!
@@pghsavoyards I'm thinking of the Essgee stage version, and the George Rose movie version. It's still marvelous!
in matters of amusement, language confusement, this is the very model of delightful bemusement!
thanks folks, you're a treasure!
Don’t stop there, write a full verse!
I see what you did there
I am the very model of a scientist Salarian
I've studies species turian, asari, and batarian
I'm quite good at genetics as a subset of biology
Because I am an expert which I know is a tautology.
In four directions cardinal I know the blot routine-ry
I problem-solve with tools and guns and even farm machinery.
I'll sing your genome base to base, the T the A the C and G
I'll solve your ailments be you sick or stroking out or seizure-y
So good to see the ladies of the chorus enjoying themselves
First guy I've heard playing the general where I can actually understand what hes saying instead of just hearing British noises.
British noises That's called 'speaking English'.
This version makes some changes while genuinely respecting the original text and staying true to the Savoyard spirit! 🎼🎵🎶😍
Still think the guy they cast as the general is too young. That guy is not old enough to have those daughters, or, you know... to have achieved the rank of major general.
The original actually calls for updates to keep the jokes relevant to the times
I loved this !! The Major General is amazing. In the 1970’s I was a John Reed fan, and thus guy was every bit a good. John Reed was the principal comedian with the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company in the 1970’s. I got to spend a whole afternoon with John Reed, at his digs in New Brighton, in 1973. He was a wonderful man.
What a delightful surprise from the algorithm! I had the joy of seeing him perform G&S when he was at IUP as a student. It's good to see him doing so well here!
Most excellent! How delightful this rendition. Thank you for posting.
Sheer joy
You know, while I really do love all the faster famous other interations, I really think there's something to be said for this slightly slower version, which makes it easier to follow the lyrics, and means that the last faster part stands out a little more.
Also bravo to the singer, he's incredibly charismatic and active!
Plus it really highlights the difficultly of this performance and shows off the performer while doing so!
Frankie, I don’t know if you even read these comments, but I saw the thumbnail of the video and freaked out. This video was just recommended to me in the algorithm on UA-cam and I shouted “is that Frankie!?” I hope you are well!
You killed it just like before! Way to go, buddy! You were made for this role! You were hilarious, as per usual.
Loved his performance, full of charisma!
My guy needs a pay rise for his dance moves alone. My new favourite major general. Bravo!
Putting the fun into Gilbert and Sullivan, just Brilliant!
...Gilbert and Sullifun...
YAYYYYYAYAAAAYYYY YOUR AMAZING!!!!!!! 😍😍🥳🥳🥳🥰🥳🥳🥳🥳 this is so much fun!! Go big go!!!!
I’ve sung this song, on stage, in front of a paying audience…. but I never got anywhere near this standard… the fella’s diction is PERFECT!
Well done Sir! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
If one is going to worry about realism, then explain how so many daughters could appear to be so close in age. Did Mrs Stanley have multiple births every year?
In any case, Mr Mosley is a fine Major General.
According to the script they are actually his wards not birth daughters!
@@pghsavoyards That's a lot of wards for a young man.
The head wobble gets me every time
Orange!
*NO!*
This is one of the greatest adaptations!
He is supposedly the "father" of all those young maidens? I think someone needs to ask some pressing questions of Mrs. Major General.
Yes he is quite young, but according to the script, they are all actually his wards in chancery!
The internet is something else. I get interested in opera. I look it up online. The next thing you know, I'm grooving out to a clip from a Pittsburgh theater company's production of Pirates of Penzance. And it's good!
Very good production, from the look of it! A good example that your traditional interpretation can still be plenty unique!
Silly, fun, genuine performance! Absolutely had a blast!
Could do with a better uniform..
Performing the song this well along with this choreography is just incredible, absolutely marvelous, truly a feat!
George Rose,Kevin Kline,Rex Smith and Linda Ronstad and the late Tony Azito the best cast.
Saluting with the left hand 💀
That's the point.
1:41... halfway to doing the Macarena...
Not just singing this but bouncing around while doing it. How did he keep his breath?
If I had a dollar for every time a modern song got inspiration from this, id have two dollars. Which isn't much, but it's weird that it happened twice
This is the most imaginative, entertaining and just plain hilarious interpretation of the Major-General's song I have ever heard! Best wishes from someone brought up three miles down the road from W S Gilbert's house in Stanmore, Middlesex.
I've seen it faster, but I've never seen it funnier. He puts so much expression into this performance.
The score says to do it as fast as the actor can, but I think it *means* as fast as they can do it well. And this major general raises the bar. (And then he proves what his full speed is, just to quell any doubt that it was an artistic choice up to then. Perfect.)
the score doesn't say that, it says allegro vivace which tops out at ~176 BPM. This production is running it at about 180 BPM
@@kameronpeterson3601 ahh, I've seen people call for it as as fast as possible but I've never actually done that show. Thanks for the correction.
what fun he is and how marvelous. the audience just eats him up. those cheers sure can’t be made up. you can understand every word the chorus sings!! 😋 😋💫

"And whistle all the airs from that infernal nonsense Pinafore."
^___^
This has got to be the hardest patter song ever!
As a G&S fan I've heard this patter hundreds of times and hundreds of interpretations and this is definitely in the top rankings. His elocution and mannerisms completely embrace Major-General Stanley and his performance surprised me with delight. Very, very well done Mr. Mosley and congratulations to the stunning cast as well.
Who's the bloke playing Major General Stanley? I like him.
I love this performance! Very bouncy and energetic, and the maintaining of the accent while singing was amazing!
This is beautiful!! I adore the Major-General’s energy!!
This song is notoriously different to sing. Well done
The modern major general was stupendous!
I have always loved this play, even the movie version.
I don’t know where UA-cam gets these recommendations but they did a good job with this one! ❤️
seriously? - WTF!
BBC Ghosts took me here (Captain sings it)
Absolutely Amazing!
Even though he is speaking the words more clearly than others and there are subtitles. I still have no idea what he is saying definition wise.
I love all of the small things, from the girl chiming in to the movements being correct in what he is saying, galacticus having only a loincloth, sat a gee being riding a horse, but the wonderful javelin joke, this makes this one of my favorite performances
A little slow on the patter. Good voice and good pronunciation but this song is notorious for a reason and that is the speed at which it is performed. Not a knock against the performer btw. This song is one of the hardest and he does make up for it with his comedy styling.
the Queen was not amused and Gilbert was never knighted for these famous lyrics
We've seen extremely technical performances before... this one really sold the jokes with the mixed-up gestures! You really get the feeling the Major-General hasn't got a clue :)
I did notice that on the second round of the last verse, he gets the gesture right, so he might have forgotten and later realized he messed up, or maybe he's just guessing and actually has no clue
Why's he going so slow?
Awesome. Well done. Great performance, with great humour.
Lmao no
All that knowledge and he doesn’t know enough about biology to suspect the mail man.
I had so much fun in this show!
the fact that it is (as far as my knowledge of British history goes) historically accurate deserves much respect
Fantastic! This brightened my day :-) The dancing and expressions and the repeat of the last verse even faster...awesome
up the costume budget and get someone to fit those costumes to the actors measures. i couldnt look at that white uniform without having the feel of a too big a man pressed into clothing not his size.
Everyone looks like they’re having a wonderful time performing this! Delightful! 💜😊
Everyone looks like they’re having a wonderful time performing this! Delightful! 💜😊
I love his British accent its just so crisp
Did anyone else click on this video expecting George Washington’s epic rap from Hamilton?
Who else is here because of Mordin Soulus?
He's got the character down perfectly
It had to be him. Someone else would've gotten it wrong
Good job on the second verse. That verse is often cut or significantly altered. It's full of references that hardly anyone today would get.
This guy looks like he is having so much fun with this role! ❤ Love it
NAH...
All the generals I've seen sound the same. This one got me!
I wish I can experience watching this live one day.
This is GREAT! And those costumes are just gorgeous!
Tip top as my grandmother would say! Spanking show ! Wish I had known I would have loved to be there!
Just brilliant !! Thank you fro loading it.
I aspire to be like the very model of a Modern major general, he's so cute ☺️
"Orange!"
👏
Orange!
Amazing! Loved this a lot. Thanks for sharing♥️♥️♥️♥️
The gimmick where one of the major general's daughter says 'orange' is a delightful addition.
If the English language evolves, hopefully it will spare "orange" from any rhyming words.
Rip Mordin, favorite scientist salarian
I am the very model of a cartoon individual is what I'm thinking of
Very strange to see this role played by a man of colour!
His diction is perfect!
Definitely a timeless comedy.
This is the most entertaining rendition. Bravo!!
So happy to see this. I used to go to their shows decades ago when I lived in Pgh, I’m glad they’re still around!
spray painted bobby hat it looks like but solid craic all the same tha, good showing
What an unusual performance. Not bad just different.
"Orange."

Same girl. "Orange."
Still no.
Same girl. "Satagee."
"I always believed in you."
^___^
@@KittyStarlight I absolutely loved the "Orange" daughter! I knew she could do it!
@@cindydott452 I know. That was too cute. ^____^
(She seems to have rather missed the traditional point about the word "Orange" though. It's *supposed* to be impossible to find a rhyme *for it* and you're *not* supposed to just throw it in as a nonsequitur to something else/everything else. 😉)
(Maybe orange is her favorite color. Or fruit. Or possibly even *both* of the above. 🍊)
He nailed it.
One giant tongue twister. Brilliant.
And now I know where Prof. Mordin Solis from Mass Effect got his jingle from. Still think his version is a bit better.
Hmmmm….
when a nerd comes to the party (holy crap he's so fun)
