I love how he added lyrics...especialy about Lloyd Webber...(especially knowing that this operetta was composed back in the late 19th century, and lloyd is a mid 20th century composer)this is great!

"...or I'll be singing this song till Australia's a repub-e-lic!"
I remember wondering what made Gilbert come up with that line back in the 1870s. I'm still rather disappointed that he didn't actually write it.

The thing i love about his play is that you have to write most of the gags into it yourself. Gilbert and Sullivan don't write them for you. :) They did a fantastic job making the Major General quirky and fun.

My favorite thing about Penzance is that it feels totally different in every production because there are half a dozen characters that can steal the show. It's a brilliant move by G&S, keeps it fresh

    The new verse:
I am the very model of a modern major-general.
I've information seminal and cultural and federal,
And regional and functional and fictional and textual,
    Abominable, scriptural, confessional, and sexual,
    Impeccable, improbable, deplorable, debatable,
    Unpleasant, undemanding, unimportant, untranslatable,
    Imponderable, mystical, ballistical, and germinal,
In facts so bloody boring that it's positively terminal.
So let's conclude this larricking commercial money grubber quick,
Or I'll be singing this song 'til Australia's a republic,
But still in matters vegetable, animal, and mineral,
I am the very model of a modern major-general.

@NinjaxPrime It is an operetta - it was composed specifically for two choruses - a male chorus and a female chorus. Musically it requires both choruses. There is always an element of the suspension of disbelief in musical theater - afterall people don't normally sing to each other. And besides - one of the great innovations of G & S is making the choruses into their own characters. But the musical considerations I think dominate and the trio does not render Sullivan's choral writing well.
