New to this channel but loving how British it is compared to the likes of Wristwatch Revival! Text messages buzzing, washing machine in the same room, dodgy editing, out of focus shots and lots of “oops” moments Proper man in a shed stuff!!! Brilliant stuff!

I also got some Richos they had quite a presence in India, the movement might be a little complex inside but one thing i have noticed is that they had very beautiful dials back then
You should hire a sportcaster to do this as a play by play commentary. It was great fun to watch.
Like every part was stuck lol, but you got it taken down, first time I’ve seen a watch maker struggling with every part
Love the dial and faceted crystal.
My Seiko was glass and even with the diamond polish you sent me, I never got it to a satisfactory condition do ended up ordering a NOS one from Japan.
I am really thrilled! Exact same watch, Ricoh automatic with blue dial was my first watch in 1980!
It stopped working decades ago. Watching this video I realized watch repairers in Kolkata, India couldn’t manage servicing😢.

A very interesting watch and caliber. Especially the simultaneous date and day change function.
I recently did a service to one of these and the truth is that it is a pleasure.
Finally a Ricoh restoration 😊. Not a funky one though, Ricoh has really quirky designs.
Also have a Tiger Eye with a rotor that uses those red diamonds as ball bearings and some fell off, IDK how to rebuild that, cannot find the ball bearing online either.

I’ve seen a few of these number day wheels on Seikos. I am more inclined to think it’s a Japanese thing. I know they used to use the Emperor in their date back in history.

It was a popular and cheapest Japanese brand in my country Pakistan in 1970/80. The mechanism was good and easy.
Mike, that movement is totally bonkers! I was left speechless, jaw agape, when I saw that pallet fork. Never seen anything like it. Interesting how the “hole and post” is employed instead of banking pins. So weird. Also, tight fitting plates give me so much heartburn, especially on the rebuilds, with how much force is needed to lower them down (while at the same time avoiding a crushed pivot). Itching to catch up with part 2.

Very interesting and the oddest watch movement ever. The history of the watch company is also interesting. I don't think I would buy a ricoh as who would want to service one?
That's a really nice watch, I think Ricohs are very under appreciated. I've never seen a red one, maybe rare? The logo on the dial might be the lotus flower for the Indian division of Ricoh?
I've got a couple myself, a green gradu-tint dial and Ricoh Monaco, a round silver coloured watch, nothing like the Heuer Monaco.

Ricoh movements are quite common in Taiwan since an old Taiwanese watch brand TELUX uses Ricoh movement during the 70s and 80s. I love the Ricoh R61 caliber in the video. It is durable and performs very well after proper service. Greetings from Taiwan! Big fan of you channel!

Excellent! Interesting movement for sure and nicely done. I think you got the length of the video and the balance of the content just right. One tip on removing the date wheel there is a hole on the wheel and if you position that hole over the spring loaded arm underneath you can push the arm away with a small screwdriver and that will help release the wheel. Still takes a bit of prying up though.

Thoroughly enjoyed part 1 Mike and very much liking the multiple camera angles as well. That movement does look like a spring fest! Here's hoping for minimal ping-offs during the rebuild.

I haven't looked it up but I think corroded means stuff has been eaten away and tarnished means stuff has been added - anyone know for sure?
Tarnished is a good word. Also as someone else suggested oxidised.

thank you for the honest videos. We learn a lot here by also showing the mistakes. What I can't find anywhere is the best way not to mix up the parts and screws during cleaning. Especially which screw goes where. What's your advice?
Take photos. Use a tray like mine and keep the screws in compartments with the parts the are for.
I do not always clean screws. Most of the time 80% off the screw is in the plate and if the heads are not dirty. It’s then easier to sort them out after cleaning as per your tray photos.
If I have ones that do require cleaning then I do this in my ultrasonic and compartment by compartment so no chance of mixing up.
If it’s a model I am familiar with then I just chuck them all together. I know so many Seiko movements I never sort them out.

I don’t know what to add. Great learning experience. All I knew Richo for was copiers. But like every big Japanese conglomerate, they dabble in everything. So no surprise there, but the movement is over engineered with how secure the bridges are held in place. Looking forward to part 2.

Interesting movement. I bought several Ricoh watches back in the 70's when I was traveling to Japan frequently. Still have 2. One has a broken crystal but still runs and the other runs but both in dire need of service. One has this movement. Wore them a lot! Can't find anyone here in upstate NY to work on them. they were everyday work horses. Hate to abandon them to the junk box. I don't ever recall them being sold in the US (I never saw any). Apparently popular in Asia and some in Europe. Look forward to the reassembly video.
The assembly video is now live so enjoy that. I don't know much about Ricoh history or where they sold them. I have found all mine here in the UK.
My advise on servicing is to join some FB group or online forums such as WristSushi. You may find experienced hobbyists prepared to take on work. There are 1000s of competent hobbyist in the USA its just connecting with them.
Very interesting. It is certainly sad sometimes for oldtimers to see big companies having to, or just abandoning for strategic reasons, certain product lines. As a photography hobbyist also, this is specially evident in that line with Ricoh, Konica, Minolta, Kodak, etc., etc.
Things come and go and companies cant sit still or they die. especially when it comes to tech.
Don't forget the entire collapse of good brands like FED and Zorki

Fantastic work on this quirky movement! I had never seen a pallet fork like this before.
FYI this is a caliber 61.
Edit: when there's a spring that looks like it's a "flyer", what I sometimes do is put the movement inside a plastic bag (freezer bag). It makes it a bit akward to work and it's definitely an amateurish technique, but it works for me.
Thanks I found out a few days ago its a 61 but Ricoh did not make it easy. I used to use the bag trick but I now feel I have enough confidence to deal with them but its a bit more high pressure when the camera is rolling!

I've seen pallet forks like that in very inexpensive Chinese-made movements. I have a $30 skeleton watch with that style of pallet fork.
The common theme I found when I posted a photo a weeks ago on my socials was that many pocket watches have this fork. It must be due to the orientation of the escape to the balance. On this movement its to the left whereas most its off to the right.
Not only could I not put that back together , I prolly couldn't even get it apart 😀🙏
Hahaha. Or if you're like me you'd put it back together and you'd remain with a few unnecessary /spare parts. Better yet it might turn out to be something other than a watch. Cheers!

It makes me wonder who sits down and designs a movement like this? It must take quite an imagination as well as technical skills.
Interestingly, I have the same rotor problem with an Accurist watch, Cal 2789, so I’ll be hoping you can fix yours and let us know how you fixed it.Unfortunately I don’t do the social media platforms.
I have a Ricoh day date automatic watch with a push button above the crown to quickly move the date forward. It was running when I bought it, but now it won't wo to kl.

As far as I am aware radium was banned in the 60s
It’s quite easy to spot so this watch I can tell is absolutely safe.

My Pentax is a Ricoh
it was like they designed the movement from first principles, not looking at what others had done to simplify things.
Thats a good point and to be fair I see this with Japanese movements. Especially Seiko who look at it from an engineering point of view and simply for function. All the while the Swiss just want it to look beautiful but add more wheels and complications to make it less reliable long term. hope you enjoy the rebuild video.
It's s cool looking watch, I really like the red dial and faceted Crystal but, the numbered day of the week function is pointless as there's already a day marker with the Monday though Sunday marker.
It just seems like useless function that could've been used for something more useful like a day/night cycle with a Sun & Moon or just a AM/PM marker.
It might have been a Japanese thing. They did once use a different calendar to us. I have seen this type of number of day on some Seiko's too.
Ordered one as "Mumbai special" for 17€ as a bargain curio and got pleasently suprised-original and matching case, dial, hands, cover "Ricoh 9" model with the same "61" movement subtype, running great, without minding to rest half a day off the hand and not needing to be manually wound.
As a teaser for this gone watch brand, they worked with Hamilton! I think Japan industrial number on the bottom is missing from the models assembled outside Japan-Ricoh held only 3 percent of Japan watch market and was popular elsewhere. I really don't know why it was not popular, maybe the slow day switch overnight and slow day setting? That date button is rather logical, although quite obtrusive on my model.
I have also read that "61" movement was also used in German watch brand "Dugena" but with the date button set to be flush (pressed by pen instead of a finger).

@@MyRetroWatches You applied pressure to the side of the bridge when removing it and it kind of "clicked" never a good sound and having freeze framed the video I can see the staff taper but not the actual pivot. Having just watched the second part of the repair it looks like I was wrong. Those pesky reversing wheels "Blued" ? That was a bugger of a fault, I cannot see why anyone would ever do that if the bluing thickness altered the dimensions that much. Or maybe the bluing seized the wheels? 🤔
Like some parts in Porsches, engineers way over thought it making it way more complicated than it needs to be.
I want a Ricoh. Been trying to find one. Nearly impossible. Bummer.

How good is this movement, compared to a similar budget Seiko mvt ?
In many ways a bit better as it has more features like hand winding whereas the 70s seikos with their basic movements did not.

A lot less than I would. When you've handled as many movements as Mike has, you get an innate sense of what seems right. Sadly, for me, I have to pour over my pictures constantly and wipe up the drool when I forget to swallow!
Not so much but I do take photos along the way. If you watch the rebuild video in parts I even show myself looking at photos on my phone for part placement.

If you refer to the part with the 3 tiny screws you have to remove. There is an oiling point for the jewel below
