What a beautiful watch. I really like the simplicity and the downtoned elegance - most people wouldn't think this is a watch worth a lot of money, they would think this is just another gold plated, simple watch, and not a watch with a solid 18k gold casing.
Stain your adopted country is playing New Zealand this evening in the woman’s soccer World Cup in Dunedin. Dunedin’s weather would suit you chilly, rainy and windy and that’s on a good day. Keep well from New Zealand 🇳🇿
Lovely Longines cleaning and servicing, Stian. The simplicity of that 1960s timepiece was where the market neede to be with those very thin movements. Suits and shirts back then were very sleek with snug cuffs. Some big honker watchwouldn't fit anywhere or be welcome for dress business suits. In the 1970s and 80s when I wore suit and tie every day, I had shirts with two-button eyelets. Snug and roomy. Depending on what vintage watch I wore, my shirts would work fine! I confess that this lovely Longines is a bit too plain to my tastes. But I love watching your process and work! Stephen
Press the airco on and just wait. It often takes a while for the thing to start up. When you use an airco for heating it takes even longer. They should program the thing to just wink: briefly open and close the fan cover to acknowledge your actions.
Thanks for another fantastic video. I adore those vintage Longines. When you consider some of their innovations, it's criminal that Swatch don't free them from the worry of treading on Omega's toes. None of my watches wind as smoothly as my rocker 345, and none of the second hands are as smooth as my 430 ultra chron. Just because modern Longines aren't allowed to be great, it doesn't mean that they weren't at the very top a few decades ago.
Thank you for this video. I had wondered what a Longines watch looked like inside. Now I know. You wanted to know why they used transparent capstones. I heard it was part of a game they had invented, which was a bit like Hunt the Thimble, but this game was for the children of watchmakers. It came with a day off from playing around and enjoying their holidays while they scoured the carpet looking for a lost capstone, but the reward was something like an ice cream for the winning child, and a few smarties for a contact lens, and a toffee for every click spring they found.
Dang, I was hoping this was being offered up for sale on your vintagewachservices site, but I suppose I'll have to lust after it elsewhere. Thank you for a wonderful video as always!

I have a similar model Longines from about the same year, but with a stainless steel case and Cal. 284 movement. The minimalism, clean lines and elegance are actually what really drew me to this watch. Plus, the movement is really beautiful once you get the case open. Thanks for sharing!
I think Longines are a much under rated watchmaker. They're simple and elegant and always look good on the wrist, as you demonstrted in this video. Thanks for sharing, Stian.
In my opinion, Longines always made high quality watches, which the "working man/woman" could afford to purchase and enjoy. Longines was synonymous with quality and value. Beautiful simple watch, always nice work, and let me tell you that you are a pretty lucky North European person that you live somewhere that 30 C means extreme heat and you don't have criminals setting every green part of the country on fire.. My country is in flames for almost a month now cause it is really easy to burn the forest with 45+ C and plenty of wind to satisfy "Green" energy business plans! Also use Japanese air condition units in order to have direct response and good cooling efficiency, we know better here at the South. Cheers from burning Greece, Jim.
Gaaaaaah, Stian, how could you do this to me? One of the very few birth year watches I've seen that I truly like and it's way out of my price bracket 🙂 But nonetheless, a really nice video of a really nice watch
You watchmakers always complaining about the size of the parts... I watch on my television and those jewels look like dinner plates and the springs look like crowbars. HAHA. Very nice simple design.
Hey Stian. Could you maybe show us a watch maker tier list before the quartz crisis and nowadays by your preferences? I thought it would be a very cool idea. Also, I really like the information how the holy trinity watch makers are inventing features and new mechanical improvements to their movements which is, aside from the dials and design and finish to the movements, is very interesting to me. Please keep educate us about them.
You make it look too easy Stian. But with no bent pins or complicated problems it goes too fast! Still nice to watch the master work. Oh, you’ll get used to the hot weather, most summer days here are over 100 degrees F (sorry, I don’t do metric temperature conversions except in the ski wax range). Stay safe.

Great video on a very simple but beautiful watch. Thank you so much, Stian. Considering what length watch manufacturers will go nowadays to cut costs, it is well worth noting how more modest watchmakers like Longines have done over time. Most people I know just love the brand: it is honest, well-priced and will perform to your satisfaction.
Hi Stian, another really good video, what a nice little mechanical Longines watch, i have a few mechanical watches automatics are great but i do enjoy a mechanical, and i enjoy servicing/fixing either one, i enjoy watching other people doing same, but trying to get any of the family or anyone for that matter interested it's a losing battle, keep it to myself nowadays, cheers my friend. Stian, in America the career path for sadists has to be working in the driver's license bureau or in social security. Did Longines and other watch manufacturers have sealed barrels so they'd have to be replaced instead of taken apart and serviced? That way barrel makers always had a job at Longines. Lol Although it does not have a date function, it is a beautiful watch. Skal from this old retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.
Spot on, Robert, these barrels were intended to be replaced at service as one unit. That might have been fine while they were in production, but nowadays less fine...

Love a Longines! It’s on my list for my next watch. Saw you went all flashy with the hands stop motion, cool! Liked the tip about leaving the barrel alone. And what about those clear cap stones, madness! Ta!
I've often wondered, do you ever get a watch that doesn't have major problems? 🙂 I very much enjoy listening to someone skilled, knowledgeable about their work and with a sense of professionalism without the arrogance. And you don't insult our intelligence either. Thanks for your contribution to my little world of knowledge. I've learned everything I know about time keeping machines right here. Beautiful watch. I have one just like it that is not running unfortunately. I recently had it serviced and it was running for about a week and now its not running again. Maybe you’d be interested in looking at it.
I had once the same watch but not in gold. The original crystal is very flat that makes the watch thin. I asked it to be replaced and got as this one thicker crystal.
Beautiful watch with a gorgeous balance wheel. Sir, is the mainspring in the sealed barrel unbreakable, or if it breaks, then have we to buy a new mainspring in a sealed barrel? Are these types of sealed barrels still available as spare parts? Please do enlighten me on this. Thank you for this lovely and enjoyable video.
Hello K, you can open the barrel but it can be tricky to close without deforming it. The best replacement would be a barrel complete, which are getting difficult to find
I do like these Longines dress watches. I think they look smart and simple. I am not a great fan of the sports look chunky watches that appear to be most fashionable now.. As for summer heat the UK has not been as hot this year. Last year it hit record temperatures where I live and we have a 120 year old house with no air con. It got unbearable but I do have a Mustang car with the coldest air con I know. Every afternoon I would grab a beer and sit in the car with the air con on whilst it idled in my driveway. I may have been contributing to climate change but needs must.
I am considering trying out some amateur watch repair and I have a burning question that I wish to ask you. I have been an automobile mechanic for over 65 years. (I'm 80 now ) My greatest specialty has always been carburetors. My head is chock full of carburetor lore. That lore and $5 might buy you a cup of coffee in some of the cheaper coffee houses. That said, I still have my old 5 Gallon carb cleaning bucket full of the kind of solvent you cannot buy any more. My question: Is there any reason why I couldn't use that carb cleaner to clean those "delicate" watch parts in my carb cleaner? That stuff is pretty powerful against old sweat and body oils. Asking for a friend. :-)
It's never too late to start working on watches! That carb cleaner will probably work just fine for most parts, what you want to be cautious with is the parts with shellac (pallet fork/balance and sometimes other places depending on the specific movement) or plastic. If you start out with some cheap watches you can find spare parts for if they get damaged, you can try your solvent and see how it goes.
You can download a remote application on your phone and use it instead of your remote ( if you have a infrared option in your phone) Like watching your videos Thank you 💙💛

Yes, that's quite normal. It's sometimes referred to as the "poor man's hack", thus a way to stop the seconds hand if you want to set the time accurately
What took the most time for this service was indeed the focusing of cameras, positioning of the parts etc. The service itself was probably less than two hours
Hello again. Nice video. I have been watching your videos for a long time but I just noticed your cleaning machine seems to have more than three stations. Do you use them all?
The problem with toggle buttons. I like an ON button and a separate OFF button. Especially these days when the button is de-bounced in poorly written software. And the processor is undersized so every button press is delayed because they went cheap on the processor. AND finally they should always put a remote control input as the highest priority. I have a TV where I hit the CH up button and it goes to the next channel but I already know I don't want to stop at that channel because the signal is frequently weak so I immediately hit CH up again. But the TV is preoccupied with trying to tune in that weak channel and is ignoring any further input from the remote. And sometimes it gets so busy trying to sync that weak channel that it goes minutes totally ignoring any input. And I finally give up and go across the room and un-plug and plug the set forcing a complete reboot.
I don't really take on servicing jobs, only if they are interesting watches for the channel. When you say your watch is digital, do you mean it's quartz? I do not have testing equipment for quartz
Why is oiling the balance staff jewels different than the others? If the same you would drop the jewel with hole in the bridge, oil as the others, drop in the cap jewel set springs? Done.
The difference is that you want the oil to lubricate the pivot end also and not just the cylindrical part. Thus you need to ensure that the oil stays on the cap stone

Yes, that's quite normal. It's sometimes referred to as the "poor man's hack", thus a way to stop the seconds hand if you want to set the time accurately
Very nice, straightforward service. Out of curiosity, aside from the video setup, how long did the servicing take? Stay cool, Stian.
What took the most time for this service was indeed the focusing of cameras, positioning of the parts etc. The service itself was probably less than two hours
Hello again. Nice video. I have been watching your videos for a long time but I just noticed your cleaning machine seems to have more than three stations. Do you use them all?
Hello Nick, yes, the machine has four jars which it cycles through
my aircon works fine, I don't have that issue
Possibly the model that Timex copied when it made the Timex Marlin, the model that Martin Luther King wore before he was gifted his Rolex Datejust.
😂👍
How could I send a vintage watch for service? It is an older digital Tudor if that matters. I am in the states.
I don't really take on servicing jobs, only if they are interesting watches for the channel. When you say your watch is digital, do you mean it's quartz? I do not have testing equipment for quartz
What's the deal with the slow-mo whenever dropping bits in the cleaning fluid for the ultrasonic? I've been wondering that forever! 😂
Just thought it would be a cool feature 😁
@@VintageWatchServicesand it is a cool feature. Very musical, and the notes almost never “off”. 💕🇨🇦
