As a kid cleaning horses’ feet, I was always taught not to touch the frog with the hoof pick, because it was sensitive. How to you know how deep to carve without hurting the horse?
I've had horses for a while now. I'm not sure exactly how far you can dig into the frog, but I'm sure it can be trimmed just like the hoof itself. Farriers Lear the inside of the hoof during training, and when learned you know where the tissue of the hoof is so you don't trim to deep. Just like with us we can trim our finger nails until we get back to the skin or a little further, that is basically how you can do it to a horse. ( I am not a professional so don't quote me on this.)
These videos came up in my feed a few days ago, and because of them, I have learned what a 'farrier' is and how to shoe a horse. I have really enjoyed watching and learning!
I've watched this a thousand times with my own horses, yet still watched this gaped-mouth. Such a good horse! Hope they had dogs on hand for the yummies!! Great video.
While i dont find horse trimming as interesting as bovine trimming, you do your videos really well and they are how i like my videos. Just ambient sounds of the job.
hoof trimming is always cool to watch, though i always find the end part just a bit scary haha, with the steam (does anyone know what that does? maybe make the hoof easy to put nails in?) and putting the nails in the new horseshoe. edit: someone in the replies told me what it's for, ty!
Shape the hoof to the shape of the shoes. You push in the hot iron and burn away part of the hoof so it fits perfectly after brushing the hoof and cooling the iron.
@Manasit They get use to it like anything else a horse gets exposed to on a regular basis in a controlled manner. I’ve worked with thoroughbred race horses. I use to make a lot of cash tip money by holding crazy thoroughbreds for farriers at track meets when I was a teenager. Thoroughbreds, especially young thoroughbred stallions that are physically conditioned and jacked up to race, are some of the flightiest, most high strung horses you’ll ever handle and even they get use to it.
It’s like trimming your nails rather than drilling teeth. You feel the vibrations and the movement when filing your nail, but the nail itself doesn’t feel pain, you know? A hoof is a big toe nail.
Another nice looking foot when you got through with it. The way you clip the nails off before your final clinch, and then hit em with the rasp, leaves very little nail showing, which makes for a very smooth, and neat looking foot. Happy New Year! 🐎👍🇺🇸
i come from a place where it is uncommon to put shoes on our horses. watching the removal of the shoe makes me super uncomfortable, but watching people clean out the hoof and fixing it up, so satisfying!
After years, the hoof would be very overgrown. Fixing truly overgrown hooves is a long, arduous, and very uncomfortable process because the tendons and ligaments get shortened on one side of the leg and lengthened on the other. This happens because the overgrown hoof forces the leg into the wrong position. Then, the trimming has to be done bit by bit, over several sessions weeks apart, so the tendons and ligaments can slowly go back to how they belong. Only after the whole process is complete and the leg is normalized does it actually feel good. So...if you have a horse, don't wait years to call in the farrier!
@@AnastasiaB44 it depends on the horse and what they walk on. Bigger, heavier horses on asphalt will wear the shoes down faster, where the shoes lasts one shoeing. probably for comfort, but also to avoid potential injuries and infections. its comparable to human shoes i guess, eventually they just wear down and are no longer good to use, though for a horse it happens way faster than for us haha. and, just like a horse's hooves, we trim our nails and keep them clean for various reasons
With shoes on them the hooves can't be worn down naturally and still keep growing like our fingernails. So the shoes don't fit after some weeks and are worn off and need to be taken off to trim the hoove and put on a new shoe :)
You replace them because if you didn’t a nail could come loose and hurt the horse or the shoe could fall off and hurt them, and you clean them to keep all the dirt out of their hoof and prevent rocks from getting stuck in there causing an abases or something of that sort. Hope this help! :)
Very beautiful legs of a horse, fluffy. And why are 2 nails hammered into one side of the horseshoe, and 3 into the other. It is impossible to hammer 3 into both sides of the horseshoe at once?
I just came across this very interesting video and thought I’d ask a question that’s had me wondering for years. Are the horse’s hooves weakened by the nails with every re-shoeing?
Not at all! If it’s done well enough like in this video, the horse is actually feeling really good. Letting the nails growing too long can hurt and damage the horse’s hooves but you cannot cut too short either so
Ut actually helps keep the integrity of the hoof if theyre walking enough to warrant shoes and it helps prevent stones and dirt from getting in the white line
They move on smooth surfaces so the hoof gets maintained on its own. Modern day horses walk on harder terrain, so the hoof gets worn down too fast. The horseshoe is there to protect the hoof
Know a little of hoof anatomy before commenting, they feel no sensation, similar to fingernails, it's made up of dead tissue. They must know what is too much or not.
Are the hooves trimmed with the deep “v” for any particular reason (Like flexibility or something)? Or is it just traditional practice? Would the hoof being totally flat cause pain or issues? Great video by the way!!😁
