I agree it's so far okay. I like it more than the little I saw of 2017's show, and a lot of Ultimate's episodes. There are some problems, some can be fixed later, but there's a lot in the foundation that cannot, which is what drags it down for me. Though, as I think it's the 10th animated Spider-Man series, it automatically places in the top 10 😂.
My friend and I watched both episodes yesterday. We are in the same boat as you. He have no eye for animation and didn't react, I am interested in animation and I thought that it was choppy, poorly made and just the animation/movement of the characters were really subpar. The weird thing is that I assumed that making rigged characters would allow them to focus more on the animation as they didn't have to draw everything from scratch all the time, but they didn't deliver on that either. It's weird that it is so choppy considering that I doubt that making it smoother wouldn't take all that much effort as in traditional animation. For the changes, we didn't really care. I agree that changes SHOULD be justified, but the characters doesn't need to be white men to work so we don't actually lose anything. The plot was a bit over the place, but it's the start of the show so that's fine. I have the philosophy that the first three episodes aren't "canon" because they need to find their bearing. Personally I hope they don't rag on about his spidey/civilian balance. I know it is crucial, but we have read, seen, listened, and experienced that in every medium in the world. On the other hand, this is someone's first exposure to spider-man, so maybe it is too close to the heart of the character. So yeah, didn't hate it.

Lucas I don't think most people interpret "woke" as being just a race swap. But it's usually a sign right? The way I see it, woke is the prioritization of ticking boxes over creative story telling and decision making. And this show so far has been on a box ticking binge without any creative reasoning.. so idk what to tell ya lol
