Static Shock is literally my favorite DC hero. I love his story, and being the first black superhero in the kids' WB lineup to have a show. The show had real problems that kids like me in the hood experienced and displayed that even kids who looked & talked a certain way could be heroes. Thank you for this video!!!!!!!!
I liked how open the show was, it felt fresh and amazing story wise. whilst not being gate kept because the character was black, you really could understand his point of view be you black or white. It was very refreshing.

I'm just sitting here remembering the time in college I happened to watch a few episodes the day before a big astrophysics exam. Next day, on the question "describe the Big Bang" I wrote "it was responsible for creating Bangbabies." Professor asked to see me after class, and asked if I watch Static Shock. I said that I did. We spent the next four hours binge watching episodes together. I got top marks on the exam btw. 10/10 would watch again with my professor. 😏😎
I just re-binged Static Shock on MAX!! just found out its not on there anymore tho smfh... thanks for showing love to a great superhero and an amazing show ahead of its time!!
It did say when I binged the series it was on the list of shows leaving max and I just tried to watch it with my gf it was gone thankfully I finished it first.
I came here to say the same thing I love this show and the character. I want to see him get a real shot again with someone who knows and loves the character.
Great video. I kind of think the arc with Sharon was hinted at earlier in one of the episodes, because she could see something was up with Virgil, and since they argue like an old married couple, she even pointed it out to their father...she just didn't know what. This was a definite groundbreaking show, and if you pay attention, Virgil/Static comes off like Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
Static is one of the best. And he was taken off MAX literally the day before the posting of this video. At least he got a new comic a few years ago and he’s coming to the DCU. We need an Absolute Static Shock.
7:20 I seem to remember an exchange along the lines of Static asking Batman "Where's Robin" which he replied "With the Titans. ...You'll meet them." Dang, and I haven't watched the show since its TV days.
You should look up the video of Phil La Marr, Static's voice actor, talking about why the show ended. He suggests more than just financial concerns as the culprit. It's also been months since we've seen any update on the Static movie. I'm timorous about Live-Action Static until I see firm confirmations from Gunn and Warner Brothers. We also know WB has been in dispute with the McDuffie estate for years over the rights to Static's character. There is a lot going on behind why Static was MIA for so long but this video does a good job of explaining the background.
That's exactly what I was thinking when they got to why static ended. i remember him talking about how one of the higher ups saying "Toys like those wouldn't sell" and those that are smart know what that might imply

Static Shock is my second most favorite show of all time right behind Naruto I watch static shock once every year it's basically been a tradition since 2018 I never get tired of that show static shock is from a bygone era one where writers respected their audience enough to give us mature stories regardless of age and the biggest reason I re-watch it every year is the more educated I become the more I see just how much thought and Care was put into the series.
loved this show as a kid defiently a rare gem compared to a lot of superhero shows today also the whole hip hop type vibe was cool and how he almost joined a gang in the first episode and chucked the fire arm into the ocean, also liked how rubber band man went from a villian to a hero, also fun fact static did appear in multiple episodes of the show young justice highly recommended, i also loved the cross over episodes he did with the justic league and batman beyond
Best days of my life waking up Saturday morning to watch cartoons. Static Shock, Pokemon, Mighty Max, Jackie Chan Adventures, Gargoyles, Yugioh, SpiderMan, Xmen, Street Sharks love them all.
Static was an important step for diversity and inclusion because it was creating a new and interesting cast who happened to be mostly black, rather than taking the name and costume styling of an existing popular character and pasying them onto the popular minority of the moment and trying to ride the legacy while simultaneously insulting fans upset about having their long time favorite replaced. Entertainment media has been deathly afraid of any attempt at launching something new for about twenty years and the endless sequels and reboots only feel more obnoxious with that kind of self-righteous political wankery stirred in as well.
They handled adult themes MASTERFULLY. 🔥 As a child I vividly remember a school shooter episode (kid was being bullied) They even had a suicide/bullying hotline at the end of the episode. Profound. The writers never treated the viewers as stupid
Static Shock was one of my favorite shows back in the day!! Not just for the themes portrayed, because those were, and still are, needed. he voice acting was top notch--Phil LaMarr, Jason Marsden, Kevin Michael Richardson, Danica McKellar, Danny Cooksey, David Ogden Stiers, Alfre Woodard; they really got an A-list voice cast imho!! My favorite episode that hit me right in the early teenager feels was the season 3 episode titled Flashback (S3E14.) That episode is where Virgil goes back in time to the night his mother, Jean Hawkins, lost her life working as a paramedic, the night of the Dakota riots. HOWEVER, before that happens, there's a scene of Virgil atop a clock tower, making an image of his mom's face appear in static electricity. The song that plays there is Will It Be Tomorrow (ngl, I always have to look the thing up to get the title.) At the time, that scene and song hit me harshly because I was still resentful of not having more than the first 3 years of my life to know my Papa, my dad's dad. I just wanted him back so I could get to know him like my older sister had. Now, though? Now it just makes me want MY dad back, having lost him to Acute Myeloid Leukemia almost 5 years ago as of the time of posting. Literally, I am crying just typing this comment out. Dangit, now I want to find and watch this episode again. Kind of a catharsis, ya know?
Episodes that covered the loss of a parent never did it for me as a kid. But as an adult that has lost his mom. Those episodes now speak volumes to me more than ever
Static Shock was always my favorite Kids WB show back then! It's true that it gave some true real life lessons too like racism and bullying. Also Dwayne McDuffie was a true writer who knew exactly how to write these DC characters the right way unlike others. Anyway Milestone definitely needs to make a comeback and bring back Static Shock and James Gunn needs to make a new Static Shock movie or series outta this too!
Static Shock was an excellent part of the DCAU. Loved his episode where John Stewart, the DCAU's Green Lantern, was being impersonated by Sinestro, as well as all the tackling of real social issues facing teens, especially with his background
I grew up watching this show and other shows in the DC animated universe and I’ve heard nothing but good things about Dwayne McDuffie and may he rest in peace because he was a very talented creative person who told some wonderful stories and I’m deeply sad that he passed away so suddenly and was unable to share more since I’m sure he had plenty of passion Left to share
Static was WB/DC version of Spiderman, atleast with how the show depicted him. Not that it was a bad thing it just worked in so many ways and how Static was done towards the end of the show despite still having strong viewership and so many crops-overs to other major shows and many more were planned for more seasons, it was a loss that is still felt today. I am glad to have grew up with static.
there was no official toy line. There's a figure from JLU; later a mcfarline figure; i think bk had a promotion; a gameboy game. Teen Titans, on the other hand, did have a dimly promoted toy line. I think he was carrying over the titans thing to this. perhaps, the real issue is probably paying rights to milestone creators for use of the characters.
If you look at the production quality of the show over the seasons, it didn't get cut, it got substantial improvements. Seasons 1 and 2 were all flat colors with no shading. The Season 2 Opening was updated to include shading, and crossover episodes got more budget for things like shading, but the early seasons looked very cheap. Season 3 is when things got a major improvement and budget increase, along with new character designs and updated costumes. Every episode was fully shaded except for those held back from season 2. Static Shock also reached the 52 episodes number, which is a common kill point for shows intended for syndication. Static didn't die or get canceled because of low ratings or bad toy sales, it reached the natural end of a cartoon's life cycle. Some shows get renewed for a 5th season pushing them to 65 episodes, such as Teen Titans, but this is rare and often those extra seasons feel tacked on. In the case of Static, the end of Season 4 feels like an actual Ending to the Series, one they planned. You are probably correct that low toy sales played a role in not getting extra seasons added on, but overall, Static had its full series, and frankly, it got more than a lot of other shows that were tragically cut short.
I rewatch the series often and recently purchased all four seasons. It is too painful to remember I can't go past season four each time. :/ I hope there is a live action and that they don't mess it up.
There was also a point where Static made an appearance in a team up with the justice league, in and episode or movie as an older version of the young Virgil we got in his TV show.
The comic and show were so ahead of their time. I regret not seeing more of the show and comics in my youth. But he really was instrumental in bringing minority super heroes into the mainstream. And even without all the excellent stories and characters, it was an exceptional storytelling series.
Yeah this video got a sub from me. Not many can articulate the impact of static shock like this. Literally my favorite show to watch. My wife bought me the dvd set

@@baronjohnson1188 damn i didnt see the list 😭😭 ima just find it on streaming websites at this point lol
Static really had the potential to carry the baton for DC
This show was one of my favorites as a kid. I used to watch it all the time.
4:14 static was essentially milestone / DC version of Spider-Man the OG Spider-Man back when he was in high school
I came here to say the same thing I love this show and the character. I want to see him get a real shot again with someone who knows and loves the character.
Was just saying this to myself while watching this 😂 👍
I enjoyed watching Static Shock when I was a kid/teenager
Great video.
I kind of think the arc with Sharon was hinted at earlier in one of the episodes, because she could see something was up with Virgil, and since they argue like an old married couple, she even pointed it out to their father...she just didn't know what.
This was a definite groundbreaking show, and if you pay attention, Virgil/Static comes off like Peter Parker/Spider-Man.
Static is one of the best. And he was taken off MAX literally the day before the posting of this video. At least he got a new comic a few years ago and he’s coming to the DCU. We need an Absolute Static Shock.
Static was the best! Im 30yrs now and i just remembered and rewatched the show 2 years ago! Still engaging and just as awesome as i remembered
7:20 I seem to remember an exchange along the lines of Static asking Batman "Where's Robin" which he replied "With the Titans. ...You'll meet them." Dang, and I haven't watched the show since its TV days.
Used to watch this show every morning as a kid. Didn't realize how ahead of its time it was back then.
@@Brixujel_Rimulex we all know they not tryna see us shine, look at this whole DEI affirmative action narrative
they putting on us. Like we dont have to work 4 times as hard as them. the messed up thing about it was that We
arent even the main ones that benefited off of DEI/ affirmative actions... it was Becky & karen LOL
we cant have NOTHING bruh. then when they do give us characters they all Washed down corny and boring. Like look
at what they did to Cyborg and john stewart. Made them Lame AF like Thats easy Money,
Static Shock is my second most favorite show of all time right behind Naruto I watch static shock once every year it's basically been a tradition since 2018 I never get tired of that show static shock is from a bygone era one where writers respected their audience enough to give us mature stories regardless of age and the biggest reason I re-watch it every year is the more educated I become the more I see just how much thought and Care was put into the series.
Static shock, Naruto, kamui? You must be a clone of me
loved this show as a kid defiently a rare gem compared to a lot of superhero shows today also the whole hip hop type vibe was cool and how he almost joined a gang in the first episode and chucked the fire arm into the ocean, also liked how rubber band man went from a villian to a hero, also fun fact static did appear in multiple episodes of the show young justice highly recommended, i also loved the cross over episodes he did with the justic league and batman beyond
I watched the shock as a kid and I wanna see him return😁😄
This amazing hero was WAY ahead of his time. Bring Static back!!
A static shock movie would be lit
Still watch it to this day
I'm praying for statics return thank you for making this video it was much needed.🙏🏿
They handled adult themes MASTERFULLY. 🔥 As a child I vividly remember a school shooter episode (kid was being bullied)
They even had a suicide/bullying hotline at the end of the episode. Profound. The writers never treated the viewers as stupid
We talk about that episode here! ua-cam.com/video/oP5rJTF4mdE/v-deo.htmlsi=cvc6neLmOkKMJmgV
My favorite episodes are the racist one and the gunshot episode
I like how you can make an AI script sound so human just through your voice and editing. Your reading is very unique. I like that. Please keep it up.
Great video ⚡
Static Shock was an excellent part of the DCAU. Loved his episode where John Stewart, the DCAU's Green Lantern, was being impersonated by Sinestro, as well as all the tackling of real social issues facing teens, especially with his background
The words 10 seconds in brought me flash memories of my childhood, so yes.
He need his own live action movie asap....it's a crime we haven't gotten one yet
Let me say this thanks for creating this concept of information, also pray "MAX" doesn't erase it making it impossible to ever see it again.
Bring back the series I didn't like the final episode, they can do so much more with Static Shock.
Love static shock! Watched all the seasons. 👌
My all time favorite hero
Man that Titans concept looks DOPE
05:03 as a kid who was literally glued to the tv watching Saturday morning cartoons 7a-noon
I DID NOT SEE NOT ONE TOY COMMERCIAL FOR STATIC
That’s was part of the problem. Poor advertising! Static deserved much more respect
there was no official toy line.
Old Saturday mornings used to be amazing catching new episodes of static shock, Yu-gi-oh! And many others!!
Ok I’m going to rewatch Static Shock. I forgot how good this show was
@7:27, there were cross over episodes with the Justice League and Batman Beyond, but yeah a Teen Titan one would’ve been tuff 🔥
I remember reading a few of the M comics when they crossed over with DC. The thing i noticed was the Heros were constantly swearing.
I rewatch the series often and recently purchased all four seasons. It is too painful to remember I can't go past season four each time. :/ I hope there is a live action and that they don't mess it up.
I loved every episode, especially the one where he met his future self
There was also a point where Static made an appearance in a team up with the justice league, in and episode or movie as an older version of the young Virgil we got in his TV show.
Oh yeah I’m so excited to see static shock returns I missed it so
Static Shock deserves to make a Resurgence.
Static was always my favorite hero
I want a Static Triple A video game
The Dakotas series was legendary......greatest black comic
The comic and show were so ahead of their time. I regret not seeing more of the show and comics in my youth. But he really was instrumental in bringing minority super heroes into the mainstream. And even without all the excellent stories and characters, it was an exceptional storytelling series.
His name is just STATIC!
Yeah this video got a sub from me. Not many can articulate the impact of static shock like this. Literally my favorite show to watch. My wife bought me the dvd set
this is one of the best shows i watched while growing up.
Cool content bro ! Virgil and Terry McGinnis are my second favorite superheroes of all time lol my favorite static shock memory (for nostalgic purposes ) is the theme song from the show Every ep was good to me so I can’t choose at the moment
JAMES GUNN BRING MILESTONE TO THE BIG SCREEN
Ever since 2015 it’s been my dream to play Vergil in a live action movie. I look just like him and have had a similar childhood. I even cosplayed him at a con and got a lot of compliments. It’s devastating to know that one of my fav heroes was shelved for so long
Super hero! static shock Whoop Whoop!
Been a fan from the very start, watched this when I was a kid.
bring back static shock
Would love to see a Static Shock reboot but adult and graphic like Invincible
When I saw this hero on the thumbnail it was like seeing some really cool hero from the past I remember watching an episode where he goes to Africa with he's dad underrated super hero
About time we get static on the b8g screen, big bang so cool
Static shock. The original black Spider-Man
I remember that episode where she did discover his secret identity but he found a way to make her not believe that he’s not static
I was so glad to see Static on Young Justice wish he had a bigger role
