      amen to that. a small scene in aliens (2) was so good, it infuriated me how bad writing of characters is these days.
      im talking about the end of the movie, where ripley goes into the elevator to look for newt. while the elevator descends into the abyss, she prepares all her weapons like in autopilot. close to the end of the ride, the camera holds on ripley and she closes her eyes.. you can pretty much hear her thoughts like: "wtf am i doing here? im just going to die down here.. but i have to try and get that kid back".
      "Aliens - Elevator Scene" here on YT. god that was a fantastic scene and character development..
      modern movies? she wouldve been the ultimate badass at that point, backfliping behind aliens and snapping their necks, followed by an oh so quippy and relateable line 🙄

    I feel like Alien 3 should've focused on the Weyland-Yutani corporation. There was an opportunity there to wrap the movie series as a trilogy.
    Alien 1 - dealing with one alien
    Aliens - dealing with a horde of aliens
    Alien 3 - dealing with the source of the problem - the Company. THEY were the big trouble-makers in the first two movies. THEY wanted the Xenomorph. THEY screwed things up. So Ripley dealing with them should've been the big finale. Their own hubris could've been their downfall.

      My idea for an alien tv-series is as follows: It takes places just before the events in the first alien movie and happens on a planet near where the nostromo spaceship
      is shipping ore.
      Weyland-Yutani is on the planet and have terraformed it for years,when they discovers a cave with lots of xenomorph eggs.
      One of them get's infected and a xenomorph is born. It turns out to be a queen,and a lot of the Weyland-Yutani humans are infected and then
      a war breaks out.
      All the humans on the planet are wiped out and only a few manage to escape in a spaceship.Then they nuke the planet from orbit.
      Then Weyland-Yutani regrets the decision and a hunt for the xenomorph begins.They get a tip that there's a crashed spaceship on lv426 and sends
      the robot Ash on the Nostromo spaceship.
      But they are informed that the mission has failed and that Nostromo has gone missing.Then Weyland-Yutani get's
      a tip about an xenomorph on Fiorina161 and sends a team of researchers there.They finds a surviving prisoner that is impreagnated and a queen is born.
      Weyland-Yutani then wants to use the xenomorphs on the planets where the engineers are located because they want the technology to seed planets with life.
      They also want the elixir that provides humans with prolongued life.After they have managed to give birth to a flock of xenomorphs,they drops them
      on an engineer planet and causes everyone of them to die.
      Then they get hold of the blue elixir that gives
      prolongued life.But several ships with engineers that where away from their planet when Weyland-Yutani wiped the
      population out,pursue them and manages to get the elixir back,but gets trapped on the planet where both parties
      crash.Then a battle takes place and the crew from Weyland-Yutani gets the elixir that gives them prolongued life
      for thousands of years,but they are now trapped on the planet,with no means to get anywhere.But then
      they see a light aproaching,but is the spaceship friends or foes ?
      It turns out it is the engineers and after a battle they gets hold off the blue elixir once again,and that
      gives the cliffhanger for a second season that we must wait several years to see???

  • @ThePreciseClimber

    Definitely prefer the Extended Cut. At first, I didn't even realise you don't get to see the pre-Aliens colony in the theatrical cut.
    That just feels odd to me. We go from seeing LV-426 as an empty, barren land in Alien 1 straight to a ruined human colony in Aliens (theatrical cut). Extended Aliens lets us see the colony during a normal day and that makes the timeline of the location flow much better, IMHO.
    I've seen a lot of fans of the theatrical cut say the Extended version ruined the pacing of the movie. But, personally, I thought the pacing of Extended Aliens was perfectly fine. In fact, after watching the theatrical cut later, I thought it was a tad too fast-paced.

    One of the many brilliant things James Cameron did with this sequel to end all sequels is, he perfectly captured the look, feel, and even the color pallete of the original. And he even created a story superior to the original. That level of film-making excellence is non-existent now. Especially with the almost inevitable "curse of the sequel" as an inferior extension of the base film, that we just expect by now.

    • @Nerdporeal
      @Nerdporeal  6 місяців тому

      Story yes....i think the first movie in terms of atmosphere and sci fi horror disaster film is better.

    • @gordonmershe1351
      @gordonmershe1351 8 днів тому

      He not only captured it but expanded the world to extraordinary places and broadened the "horizon" beyond anything feeble little mind of Ridley Scott could possibly imagine.
      The film is far superior to the "original" in every single aspect except maybe cinematography but I'd argue they're on a par there even, though generally speaking Scott does outshine Cameron purely as a visualist in many instances.
      In every other sense - writing, producing, directing, special effects, camera work, etc., Cameron is beyond reproach. He's a genius visionary with insane understanding of physics of the scene in both literal and metaphorical way - a talent & ability demonstrated by every single movie he ever made. Compared to him, Ridley Scott is a hit & miss machinery product and a mediocre director that's really good at self-PR though most of his films are infested with awful pacing, poor storytelling, bad writing, incoherent messaging, questionable perspectives and a plethora of embarrassingly bad performances - he's had too many truly awful movies made and less than a handful of remarkable ones.
      In my view Alien was a fluke that mostly relied on the talents of others and he simply managed to not mess it up too much. He did manage to take a piss on Alien with Prometheus & Covenant later on though so bravo to him I guess 💪😂

    The group checking the ceiling as the horde of aliens are slowly approaching, and Ripley and Hicks desperately trying to get through the floor after Newt falls into the water, are to this day the most tense moments I experienced in any media. As far as my opinion goes, this movie is the blueprint of how to make the perfect horror. The overwhelming majority of horror media misunderstand which emotion/feeling is the central driving force of the genre. It's not strong visceral emotions like fright or disgust. It's tension. A good horror knows how to cultivate and manage tension in a way that slowly grows into terror, and also how and when to relieve it so that it doesn't burn out or overwhelm the audience. Ironically, I think the Alien franchise is the textbook definition of this, not only in one, but two different mediums. Aliens in the sphere of movies, and Alien: Isolation in the sphere of videogames (even with the non-horror related issues of the latter that held it back from universal critical acclaim). For a franchise with so many mediocre or downright awful entries, it sure set the bar high with it's best releases.

    • @Nerdporeal
      @Nerdporeal  7 місяців тому +2

      Total.....Agreement. Original Halloween is a great example of tension and that is more unnerving than anything else. The grossout according to Danse Macabre is when the horror is a failure which in turn is created when terror (true tension) is a failure. Original Alien does this real well and then when the grossout does happen.....Kanes scene has stayed with me....(checkout my Alien video). Appreciate the comment. This is a great movie and was happy to make this video!

    I love this movie so much but the fact that they removed the scene about her daughter is unforgivable. It makes Ripley’s relationship with Newt so much more meaningful, and with the added context of Ripley’s late daughter, the moment when Newt calls her “Mommy!” at the end is so emotional

    A NEAR-perfect sequel. Cameron had me right up to the end, when Ripley depressurizes the cabin of the loader area, everything gets sucked out into space, yet Ripley is somehow able to breathe and hold the alien queen by her tennis shoe and seemingly indestructible elbow joint. I would've had her decapitate the queen with the loader or by some other method, then scramble to board the smaller ship with Newt and Bishop before the queen's acid blood eats through the hull and they're all sucked out into space.

    While I agree the movie is great mostly because of the fantastic cast I don't think it's "perfect". The problem for me is the treatment of the central characters: the aliens. They are basically turned into a giant homicidal ant colony. In the first movie the alien was a mysterious creature with unknown motivations and perhaps even intelligence. Here, it's just a bug hunt. I also had some difficulty suspending my disbelief that a child would be the sole survivor of the massacre. In fact, the Newt character reminded me of the Jurassic Park movies where you know the children will always escape the bite of the Raptors. Fake danger. I thought Alien 3 was darker and deeper (the Assembly cut, I mean). The focus on the action took precedence over story narrative, at least for me. Still, far superior to most sequels.

      @@Nerdporeal Yeah, I think Alien had more desparation in it because it was a total unknown species, and it was picking off the crew one by one. That has a higher scare factor than many Aliens and a bunch of army trigger fingers. But, still, Aliens was a very enjoyable flick and added to the lore immensely.

  • @LukeLovesRose
    @LukeLovesRose 6 місяців тому

    It would've been a big mistake not to let Cameron direct this masterpiece. You wouldn't have had the numerical art in the background, which I'm sure is making you all scratch your heads over. But that's how you know Cameron was the best man for the job.
    Next time you watch Aliens, look for the number 57 on the walls and pipes. Try to figure out how the sight of those images apply to Ripley in that moment. It's a genuine head-scratcher but the use of these numbers proves that Aliens is FAR from a mindless action film. But if you are so involved in the story and characters that you cant see this blatant numerical art, then Cameron has succeeded as a writer and director.
    What's even more cool is trying to figure out the value and importance of other numbers scattered throughout the movie.

Aliens is boring cheesy '80s action fluff with masculine forgettable characters that are just there to get killed, no sense of claustrophobia or desperation, the stupid child-in-danger trope, and worst of all, no suspense or horror whatsoever! It's just as forgettable as the other two sequels, given I only saw them once and nothing stood out nearly as much as anything in the first movie. Sorry, not sorry.

    Aliens was a great movie but to claim it had little to no flaws is a ridiculous statement and claiming Alien 3 isn’t a good movie because it has no happy outcomes is equally ridiculous. Aliens is family a action movie so wasn’t able to continue the theme of the original. Alien 3 tried with questionable degree to restore the original tone. Simple minds didn’t ask did another Xenomorph stow away on board in keeping with the hive. Simple minds also cannot get around the convenient plot holes. According to the writers the acid blood is neutralized after the creatures death. This is as flawed as it gets because it was the largest problem during the film even working out where they were let alone working out exactly when they died. In keeping with this the acid blood seemed to be conveniently effective or not depending on the writing. Also one of the major flaws remains the behaviors of the aliens as well as their look. Even in aliens the strength of the aliens seemed to be flexible according to the needs of the writing. The Queen tore effortlessly through support struts when chasing Ripley and Newt but was unable to even scratch the power loader nor did it bleed when it was crushed by the falling power loader nor seemed able to lift something it should have found relatively light.

      Movie is as old as me. Later vids will warn of spoilers. My bad

      @Nerdporeal I was referring to the channel "heavy spoilers." I thought your retrospective far superior, lol, but thanks anyway 👍🏻

    I'm halfway through your video and it's just been a play by play commentary following everything that happens in the film. Hardly a review.

      Thats a review too. A retrospective too. You can skip to the final few minutes then if youre not interested in the story commentary.
