I'm in a very bad place in my marriage right now and hearing the lyrics to this song broke me. Especially the bridge/break section, I never thought that this song resonates on me so much.
The song is for her son..pretty much explaining her divorce to her son saying..she changed herself for both of em but the cost was too expensive and now she’s left her toxic ex husband..and asked her son to go easy on her when questions push to shove….”there’s no gold in the river that I’ve washed my hand in forever” meaning her ring..she was a child as in settle down young..but now she’s free and ready live the way she want to live as a free woman…
this is a great song for any decent singer to cover, actually. Its not full of belting, high notes, or runs. Its easy going and smooth, you just need to be good at transitioning registers and emotional phrasing and interpretation.

I think you are right that many people will try to do it for things like these reality shows and stuff, but, I think they will be very sterile. Unless you have been through that sort of pain, you would have a hard time doing this song justice. You can hear the pain in her voice and that is what makes it tug at you. She is one of a kind. It’s an amazing song.
