i do prefer Harbinger. Shepard. You have become an annoyance. You fight against inevitability. Dust struggling against cosmic winds. This seems a victory to you. A star system sacrificed. But even now, your greatest civilizations are doomed to fall. Your leaders will beg to serve us.
This is my favourite moment in the entire game, but Corypheus was really just downhill from here. He went from terrifying and badass to just a petulant jerk who lost at every turn.
For a priest whose perception was shattered twice before he settled upon gods not existing, but merely being a fancy title, which he might claim himself, he was a goldmine of writing potential (especially since the game dabbles in Maker's existence already via him, the Inquisitor and Mother Giselle). And given he created a mini-Black City in minutes, how awesome would it be to face him down in Skyhold, with its parts being floating around instead. Or, better yet phasing Skyhold in and out of Fade (probably doable and fitting, since it is the place the Veil was created), demons running amok, soldiers and civillians alike terrified of being stuck or killed. That would be terror worthy of his kind of character and his level of power. ...alas.
@@ВладиславШаклеин-ч7м Yes! Someone else who had the idea for floating Skyhold, I've always thought that would've been incredible and added so much more tension.
I preferred this one. I always play as a cocky arrogant rogue, so that suited me well. It only looks like I'm getting the crap beat out of me, and tossed around like a rag doll. I'm really stalling for time. Yeah, that's it. Ignore the fact that I can barely walk immediately afterward.
This scene is only a tad underwhelming and here's why: You actually see Corypheus just as the battle at Haven begins. You seem him standing next to Samson or Calpernia on the cliff overlooking the settlement. I feel that just that little scene takes so much away from the surprise reveal here. If it weren't for that one clip, this scene would've been 10x more thrilling.
He never really explained who he was. Come on: "I am just...different. I was born that way." Not convincing at all in my opinion. Also, he and Corypheus look REALLY similar. If you do a bit of research, you will also find out that "Corypheus" means "The Conductor", a title therefore, just like "The Architect" is a title. It could be that the latter was the one who set up the journey to the fade and Corypheus was the one conducting/leading it. And besides that, David Gaider (the lead writer) openly confirmed, that the Architect is the same type of character as Corypheus, therefore an ancient Tevinter Magister.
John Uysal yes, but Corypheus aspires to be a god and The Architect wanted to free the darkspawn of the need to begin Blights (although many of his methods are questionable)
And another very interesting point is that Corypheus states that, unlike what the Chantry says, the Golden City was already corrupted when they got there. And I think he's telling the truth. I mean, come on, the Chantry is full of shit, and Mother Giselle saying about it that Corypheus tells himself this lie, because he's too ashamed of his failure to face the truth, isn't really convincing. I think the Blight was already in the Golden City, and the magisters getting in somehow let it out. And like Anders said in DA2 Legacy : "Why not pin that on the mages too ?"
and what I find even more interesting is that they were not "OHOOO Look I am power hungry evil magister". They were loyal priests who entered the city to serve their God. Their Gods asked them to do it.
It’s so interesting that he would say the herald hijacked the ritual “and stole its purpose.” After you were discovered to have the power to close the rifts, people championed you the Herald of Andraste immediately. You were worshipped like you were some sort of God. What did corypheus ultimately desire? To become a God. “You stole its purpose.”

In hindsight along with Veilguard lore-reveals, Corypheus was just a tool for the Evanuris, which is sad as fuck. But then again, the lore-reveals also disprove almost everything all the major cultures of Thedas believe... what a joke...
Silmarisi Spoiler alert from DA2, you've been warned. You kill corypheus DEAD in DA2 Dlc "legacy" You plant a bloody axe "Or whatever your weapon was" Through his skull and brain. Thats catarogized as dead in my eyes. Corypheus died in DA2, thats why it was so mysterious to see him as the elder one. And i havent read too much of the old lore yet with dumat and all that, i really should xD!
Kingandhorse I've played DA2 Legacy and you DON'T kill Corypheus. At least not entirely. You destroy his body, yes, but he just hops into your Grey Warden ally (Janeka or Larius - whichever is with you). You can even see them suddenly grab their head in the background and afterwards they act a bit weird (compared to how they acted up to this point). If you still don't believe me, (SPOILER ALERT) his body hopping ability is basically a plot-point you have to get around during later parts in DA:I. As to why he still looks like his Legacy-self ... no idea, ask Bioware. But he clearly did NOT die during Legacy. There are countless debates about this on the internet and most people agree about that - google it, if you're interested. As for Dumat - Dragon Age Wiki is a good source of information. In DA:Origins Awakening expansion you can even get the armor of the Grey Warden who killed Dumat - it's the best armor, too. And heaviest. My Arcane Warrior still wore it - and absolutely nothing could kill her. Going from a squishy elven mage to the heaviest armor wearing, Starfang/Vigilance wielding force of magical chaos that could solo the entire game has never been more satisfying. :P
My biggest issue is that this was the one time in which instills in you the enormity of his power and the prospect of his revelations. It seems everyone remembers the quote, which they should, it was REMARKABLE line of dialogue. However after this point we just one up him over and over again and each time we see him he has lost more and more of his influence as an antagonist. By the end, it's clear that he is more crazed then truly insightful and that is a waste of the character. I hope they use the Architect again in the future and try and right some of Corypheus wrongs. But this scene is incredibly intense. I still love watching and do in fact get goosebumps over the line plastered in the comments section. Which mind you, I am not insulting the fervor of its use, rather it just proves how effective it is to get fanboys/girls to quote it all over the place, lol.
Peter Jackson and his entire crew of the Lord of the rings trilogy making this series? I think it'd be epic as hell. Would it or could it happen and still give me the thrills and chills? Maybe, but man if they could pull it off with all the voice actors and actresses cast as their original roles...what I'd give to see it happen!!!!
I personally think that "Dragon Age" would be better off as a TV Series. It would simply give the opportunity to cover more than in a potential movie trilogy.
I didn't like it too much. For me, it was a letdown after Origins. Not really too much of a redemption after DA II. And the gameplay is the most annoying and boring of the three. It's like an MMO played in singleplayer... The story gets enough weight only with the Tresspasser DLC. So I'd say, that 6/10 is a pretty fair rating for the base game :D
When I found out who the Elder One is, I was disappointed, to say the least. But now, the more I think about it, the more interesting this choice seems to be. He has all the connections and reasons to not make him some kind of diabulus ex machina and it's getting to the point where I'm starting to love to hate him. This is how a good villain must be. Really, it's almost like he's a new Voldemort ... but better written.
+Silmarisi I was a little disappointed they didn't use this opportunity to tie everything together in Dragon Age lore before moving on with the whole Solas plot in Trespasser. Corypheus is a link between pretty much every plot thread in the series so far: Darkspawn/Taint, Mages vs. Templars, Elder Gods, The Maker, The Elven Gods. At the very least it was an opportunity to explore the origins and cause of the Taint more.
Garry Cotton well we now know about the elven gods... they seemed to be less fascinating... anyway... i have a feeling even in the future series, they probably just show extra information regarding the taint and its proper origin, but hey won't go as far as to reveal the true nature of the maker...
As someone who played origins and sort of got into the lore and as someone who didn’t enjoy dragon age 2 and, though played and beat it, did not get or play the DLC, this was my first time meeting him. And it made perfect sense to me. Origins talks a lot about the tevinter magistrates who worked for the old gods that infiltrated and corrupted the golden city where the throne of the maker resided, thus creating the blight. It wasn’t a universally agreed upon fact in origins, rather a theory nobody could prove. Until corypheus came and provided something nobody thought they’d ever get. The truth of the blight. The tevinter magistrates did not cause it though were likely the first infected by the corruption of the golden city they found. Then the old gods were corrupted (somehow), creating the arch demons and the blights. I was so fucking satisfied with this scene when I played it. And I was so thoroughly convinced I had just met one of the most badass and most brilliantly written antagonist of any game - one of those very tevinter magistrates from the legends so thoroughly established in the series as staple from the very beginning. And I so physically upset that the boss fight with him was absolutely trash.
Tentons O'fun 80? The dude's like over a thousand years old. If he looks 80, he's lookin pretty good for his age. Still, couldn't hurt to get a little muscle on those twiggy arms of his.
I can only imagine how pissed off he is here. The power that made it possible for him achieve godhood was fumbled and surrendered to some random nobody who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Someone who didn't even intend to steal it, and knows nothing about the anchor or it's purpose. And because of that one fumble, he lost the means to recover his weapon, as it became part of the herald. So it's basically because of an accident involving this one person here that he lost his greatest asset in aspiring to godhood after thousands of years. I would sure be mad as hell at that ignorant little prick if I were him right now.
Corypheus was a very disappointing villain...besides destroying your first base, he really didn't have an intimidating presence throughout the game. He (or his faction supporters) would show up and you'd hand them their asses on a silver platter. Even the final battle was terribly underwhelming. They should've had a Skyhold siege. Seriously, you don't have a huge castle as a base and NOT have a siege battle.
most of his army was crushed in the avalanche, The final fight is he at his lowest, this is when he has all the power, but he is arrogant, and it proved to be his doom
***** see, that's what I don't like about him. He's this huge "end of the world" villain that's treated as seriously as a papercut. Incredibly annoying but you'll get over it.
Imo, it would have been MUCH better if most of the areas that are available after the Haven siege had situations like Emprise Du Leon. Armies of Venatori, Red Templar, and fanatical nutjobs massing up prisoners to be horribly killed in the slow process of becoming living red lyrium mines, having several destroyed towns actually shown (where in the actual fuck are the so-called destroyed homes of the Emerald Graves inhabitants?), and actually having him doing more than telling other things to fight for him in the few times he actually appears. The problem with Corypheus was that...well...we only get to really see his forces not be complete jokes during an extremely select few moments. Hell, a crapload of journals, diaries, and notes by his own forces are hilariously comical since they're written by half-insane idiots. Never forget the man who really likes his tiny pyramid.
+joshua kim He should've appeared much more I agree, but he is the coolest villain I've seen in a long time. The king of the wild hunt from witcher 3 was much worse imo, you've already beaten him in wraith form in witcher 1.
Corypheus is an AWESOME character but not so good as Great Villain of a game with continental proportions. The final battle was perfect for a pride drunk guy who wanted be whorshiped as a god, but was not exactly what is expected from a final boss. At the end, he was nothing more that a sub boss to introduce the Dread Wolf. PS: Yes, my english sucks.
I kinda wish the warden would appear under the elder ones control and you fight them as one of the final bosses. Example like coryypheus says something like lets see you take down this pawn of mine and then the grey warden steps out of the shadows and you have to fight them.
Dead whispers? Hm. How many times did the Warden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor go through areas with spirits/Fade memories? Even on the island in the Basin had wandering spirits of the dead... What catastrophe made the Black City?
Arlathan IS the Black City... Like Anders in DA II, Solas used powerful magic to strike right at the heart of the empire. There's a reason Corypheus says there were "thrones."
I wonder how awesome will be the next DA. Pretty sure that the Old Gods of Tevinter were The Forgotten Ones of the elven pantheon. PS: I still I have not played the Tresspasser DLC yet.
Where the hell do the companions go? Do they take this chance to flee and let the herald do this alone? For that reason I solo this mission because it fits better, though telling empty space to move is a little odd.
Carmilla's Faithful Servant if you don't rp a faithful PC (i.e. you keep denying that you're the herald of andraste), you don't get the dialogue option to bring up Justinia.
I'm only surprised no body figured it out from the start where you see his silhouette I mean it matches him perfectly the hand was the give away for me lol
Me too I guess. I suppose that a lot of the fans just wanted Corypheus to be a lieutenant character to the new baddie which is also an ancient magister.
"Beg that I succeed, for I have seen the throne of the gods, and it was empty!" Excellent line, but questionable delivery. If there's a throne there, that means someone must've made it. Corypheus is probably just butthurt the magister's plan to steal the Maker's power backfired so he's got some self-serving memory.
The black city is assumed to be arlathan at the end of tresspasser so we can assume the throne was sat in but definitely not by the maker I would assume it was made by the elvhen
@@Byzantine_Orthodox_Christian As I recall, Arlathan is remembered as still existing in the physical world AFTER the veil was created; Tevinter surrounded it and beat it in battle. So the golden city, whatever it is, isn't Arlathan, or not the TRUE Arlathan anyways. It might be the memory of Arlathan, twisted with myth as its become, which could make it all the more dangerous, but it's not the original Arlathan.
Was I the only one who didn't care when Haven was destroyed? I mean, in Origins, the place was filled with crazy cultists trying to kill you. I know the people living there now are, obviously, not the same people, but I still didn't feel sad. In fact, I was happy and smiling and said good riddance.
I say they missed their chance for a Skyhold invasion. Also, it would kinda be redundant to have Haven be attacked, and then Skyhold too? As a DLC, who would even be leading the siege if Corypheus is dead? But in any case, I'd also like to see that, I just can't imagine how they'd do it.
I liked solas until I found out he gave the orb to corypheus, he and flemeth wanted this to happen. He set into motion events that would make the blight seems as insignificant as the mage rebellion, I punched the dread wolf in my second playthough.
So was I. But then I considered who it would possibly be out of characters with enough potential power to do what he did. The list is fairly small and filled with, imho, equally disappointing candidates. This guy is a through-line that connects grey wardens, blights, mages, templars, lyrium, politics... so many disparate things that are quite significant in the DA world. Or so I believe. Gotta finish the game and find out if that view is justified...
MygunsJammedify I would not be so disapointed. In my playthrough thus far, he seems like a really well written character. One of those villains that you just love to hate.
I agree, this was a cheap choice, considering he was already dead. I believe he is more of a filler villain, something they used to draw out the story a little longer and keep us wanting more. Over the next 5 installments we'll see awesome villains like the elven gods, or an actual old god.
"Beg that I succeed, for I have seen the throne of the gods, and it was empty!"- man, that line gives me chills.
Might have been the best line in the game. Certainly Corypheus was never more chilling than here.
The way they pull off that music. still it wont be better than halo 3

Well... too bad the rest of the game doesn't make him live up to the potential given in this scene. :(
because all he was is but a mere small part of larger plan of the dread wolf (solas) and mythal (flemeth)
Corypheus brah, time to hit the gym. Just because you are the elder one doesn't mean you have to have the arms of an 80 year old.
Tentons O'fun 80? The dude's like over a thousand years old. If he looks 80, he's lookin pretty good for his age. Still, couldn't hurt to get a little muscle on those twiggy arms of his.
The dude is like 12 feet tall he's scary enough
Mage's arms. He's not a warrior.
Yet he’s strong enough to pick up a Qunari Inquisitor and toss them through the air like they’re nothing
I love that he's so arrogant that he forgot to kill the Inquisitor.
I love how his arrogance makes him seem like as badass.
Im not afraid
You will be
Corypheus looks like he belongs in one of Clive Barker's books
Best villain reveal ever !!
still wondering where's "The Architect"?
The Orlesian Warden - Commander killed him in the default world state
What's the name of the soundtrack when Corypheus is stalking through the fire?
It's literally "The Elder One Theme" from the Soundtrack.
+James Repstock simple enough, it's funny because I didn't even think of that
Oh no worries.
I kinda wish the warden would appear under the elder ones control and you fight them as one of the final bosses. Example like coryypheus says something like lets see you take down this pawn of mine and then the grey warden steps out of the shadows and you have to fight them.
that would be awesome but the hero of ferelden cant be controld by the elder one
That would suck, because the Warden would stomp the Inquisitor. Game over.
pateuvasiliu indeed
pateuvasiliu Not if your playing as him and that would be the challenge everyone was looking for and the warden appearance so 2 birds with one stone
The Warden is dead though, or at least, Leliana says so in a conversation with her.
Dead whispers? Hm. How many times did the Warden, Hawke, and the Inquisitor go through areas with spirits/Fade memories? Even on the island in the Basin had wandering spirits of the dead... What catastrophe made the Black City?
+James Repstock I wonder if it's really Arlathan or what's left of it.
Trespasser is a buggy, awful mess. I felt totally ripped off and will never play it again.
@@JamesCourse66 If Arlathan is the black city then where did the corruption of the blight come from? I hope we learn this in Dragon age 4.
he sounds like shales voice actor
2:03 whats the music in the background ?
It's called "The Elder One Theme."
Where the hell do the companions go? Do they take this chance to flee and let the herald do this alone? For that reason I solo this mission because it fits better, though telling empty space to move is a little odd.
The Herald stayed back to give them a chance to live.
@@chemicalpoisons The companions fled and left the Herald to die alone. I prefer soloing this, feels right with the music and the cutscenes.
They shouldn't have showed him on the hill just before this scene happens. It ruins his appearance out of the fire a bit.
Great introduction. Shame they go on to waste him for the rest of the game. He's like Saren, but without the Sovereign reveal waiting in the wings.
what is it with moody mages and feathered pauldrons?
Much better villain than the night king
Can you romance Corypheus? I feel so attracted to him!
You must be sick in the head or something.
Wait,this comment is mine!
What he strives to be is what i envy
Were you high?
Exalt the elder one.....the will that is corypheus
Unrelated question about DA:O... which Old God was it....?
+illusionz Urthemiel
+FluffyNinjaLlama Urthemiel died in origins. ( and maybe be reborn as Kieran if Morrigan did the ritual)
the old god that Corypheus used to serve was Dumat, the Architect from DA:O served Urbthemiel.
Someone know what is the name of the music in the video ?
"The Elder One Theme"
Thank you a lot ^^
would be cool if there was voice line video's of this creepy guy.
Liked corypheus's voice acting from the da 2 dlc more.
The inquisition voice has its own charm.
I truly want to know why single time i see the elder one i think about the period ... Oh god why 😭😂 !?!
Who is the voice actor
Corypheus? David Sterne is his name.
If you mean the inquisitor Google says the female British voice is Alix Wilton Regan.
I'm a tad confused. Didn't you kill this bloke as Hawke in the second game?
Look at the Warden behind Hawke in the seen and remember that powerful darkspawn can jump bodies to beings that are tainted.
Fluffyllama I noticed that you didn't have the option to ask if this is why Divine Justinia died, do you know why, I was just curious
He sacrificed her for the ritual.
I suppose that a lot of the fans just wanted Corypheus to be a lieutenant character to the new baddie which is also an ancient magister.
you mean after you make your character when it's clearly Divine Justinia V's golden sillouette?
The will that is coryphenus
"Beg that I succeed, for I have seen the throne of the gods, and it was empty!" Excellent line, but questionable delivery.
If there's a throne there, that means someone must've made it. Corypheus is probably just butthurt the magister's plan to steal the Maker's power backfired so he's got some self-serving memory.
The black city is assumed to be arlathan at the end of tresspasser so we can assume the throne was sat in but definitely not by the maker I would assume it was made by the elvhen
@@Byzantine_Orthodox_Christian
As I recall, Arlathan is remembered as still existing in the physical world AFTER the veil was created; Tevinter surrounded it and beat it in battle. So the golden city, whatever it is, isn't Arlathan, or not the TRUE Arlathan anyways. It might be the memory of Arlathan, twisted with myth as its become, which could make it all the more dangerous, but it's not the original Arlathan.

western women be like
Shit just hit the fan! O_O
Corypheus = BAMF
Was I the only one who didn't care when Haven was destroyed? I mean, in Origins, the place was filled with crazy cultists trying to kill you. I know the people living there now are, obviously, not the same people, but I still didn't feel sad. In fact, I was happy and smiling and said good riddance.
After the shit we went through, nah, not gonna miss that crapshack either.
There's still barely anything there lol but yeah Skyhold is better.
Spoilers!!
Corypheus is just a pawn. The real mastermind is a trickster.
yeah that fucking dread wolf Solas
Pretty sure that was the original plan, but it's all gone so very wrong during the events of the game. Or at least it's implied.
I liked solas until I found out he gave the orb to corypheus, he and flemeth wanted this to happen. He set into motion events that would make the blight seems as insignificant as the mage rebellion, I punched the dread wolf in my second playthough.
I'm sorry but german sync of Corypheus is way better
Really? Corypheus is the elder one? That's disappointing.
Gotta finish the game and find out if that view is justified...
shinsaikou1
I suppose, however I was hoping we'd get someone new, although Corypheus being the elder one does make sense.
BlackFyr: There's going to be 5 installments? Total? Really? How do you know?
Didn't Hawke kill that guy?
Dragon age necromancy comeback 2!
I was partly joking but then again if they possessed the warden how'd he get his body back?
Essentially same way an Archdemon would if its spirit possessed a Darkspawn.
Chris Deebo Not the same. When an Archdemon tries to possess a grey warden, both are destroyed. This is something else.
sarahIcommented Only if the Archdemon is killed by the same grey warden. Anyway, this is explained later in the game.
I don't think that was a "nice" prize.
