Interesting. Cole is like a Reverse Anders. In Dragon Age 2, we saw what happens when a human is forced to become more like a spirit, as Justice/Vengeance slowly corrupted Anders and made him unable to grow or move beyond his fanaticism. Every time it seemed like Anders had learned a lesson, he went right back to his extremist ways because spirits have no concept of patience or change. Solas's quote emphasizes the difference between the two: "Spirits don't work through emotions, they embody them." I really like what BioWare did with this quest.
In awakening, Justice was trapped in another warden body. He experienced the world with the warden, and he actually did learn something new. He was growing when he lived in the human body.... then he left it to go with Anders. :/ Momma Warden would be disappointed in Anders.
And Varric is there to witness the transformation of BOTH Cole AND Anders. One wonders if his insistence on making Cole more “human” isn’t based at least in part on leftover guilt / regret from watching Anders turning out the way he did.
Anders made a deal with a spirit to become an abomination. In reality, Anders should have been made tranquil years before he set the world on fire but the Templars failed yet again
I like human cole he seems to be finding more peace within himself over things, As a spirit he seemed as tormented as the people he helped, and he helped not just because he was compassion, but it seemed to distract him from the loss he suffered from his own experiance. Him becoming human seems to widen his scope for the good that he is capable of-like his empathy is becoming more perceptive, (his comment about cullen) but only time will tell how far this lets him evolve.Later on, it seemes that Cole grasps what it means to others who recieve help from him, and in doing so expends his personal understanding of his role beyond simple compulsion.
I think what I like most about Cole's personal quest is that there really isn't an option that fundamentally changes his values, just the way he implements his brand of helping people. If he's more spirit-like, he can hear even minor bits of sadness from people and knows what to say more often. If he's more human, he messes up a bit more often, but he's able to actually relate to people and be remembered by them, which helps them see that another person is looking out for them. There really isn't an option where Cole isn't awesome.

I always thought of it like this: Cole always wanted to do the right thing, but as a spirit viewed the world in black and white thus his actions could cause greater damage than inaction. For example: Cole's banter with Cassandra concerning the previous Lord Seeker. Cole killed him ensuring he wouldn't hurt anyone else, but this caused the war to escalate, so Cole's actions hurt more people than they helped. By becoming more human, he can learn to see shades of grey and use good judgement rather than just acting on his nature.

So glad to see that I'm not the only proud papa/mama to Cole around! He is so cute! Its like having a son in real life! I just want to teach him about everything!
I liked Spirit Cole more I think...he seemed happier that the real Cole was at peace and that he could fulfill his purpose properly. These decisions...they so thought-provoking its madness...
im taking the side of varric on this one. cole as a spirit just seems... less emotional and more like a robot doing his duty. at least as a human, he can learn, he can feel things other than compassion, plus hell become less fragile as time passes and he learns how to control his emotions. so yeah, i went with making him more human.
I prefer human Cole. As a spirit, Cole could fade away. His connection to the world and to everything deemed real could wither until there was nothing left. Everyone would forget him. And he would become unreal. That has always been something that scared him, but I doubt he would feel fear if compassion ate up his mind. In a way, it sounds like becoming tranquil. Cole would lose who he is to serve Compassion. As a human, Cole will hurt more. But, hurting isn't always a bad thing. It lets us change and fight. It pushes us to become better and different individuals! And even with all the pain humanity brings, it's also glimmering with warm, happy life. Cole can form deeper bonds now. He can be real. Face Ryhs again, make friends, share moments with everyone neither he nor they will ever forget. The sounds happier to me. Happiness is meaningless and empty without pain. It has no substance. It doesn't feel real. A state of happiness forever enveloping a person would be the same as feeling nothing forever.
I didn't see him as less emotional as a spirit. In the restaurant scene he's absolutely giddy, I was smiling so hard through the whole thing because he was just so bright and enthusiastic. And I think spirits can still feel pain. He references Rhys and thanks you for not leaving because of what he is, and to me that implies he was worried you would and that he'd be upset if you had. Otherwise why would he care one way or the other? He can help people whether you like him or not. But as Bioware have said. Both sides have their ups and downs. Neither option is truly "right". But spirits aren't emotionless robots, they're just different.
There really is no win or lose here, one option "fixes" cole, one makes him more happy, and more human, although arguably both options will make cole happy
It's good people remember Cole now. Sometimes all people need to make the pain go away is to know that someo e wants to help them. I know that from personal experience.
He does remind me of Evan Peters as well. Their appearances are very similar but Cole is compassion while Tate(Evan) is more mean, I guess. Tate in AHS is basically overwhelmed with the evil of the world and is hurting. While Cole can see good, wants to help, and can feel other people's pain.
I prefer Human path because it beings about the conclusion to Cole's story that began back in Asunder. He finally learns what Rhys was trying to teach him.
I don’t think he was trying to keep cole from killing the man because of morals, but because of the effect It would have on Cole. That being said those mages did worse things than just summoning a demon, they stole a peaceful spirit from the fade, bound it to their will, commanded it to do something it was not made to do, and turned it into a demon. Exactly what cole fears happening to him.
He said that not because killing is bad or whatever, he said it because Cole is a spirit of compassion and killing for revenge would be really, really bad for him.
Varric is wrong too. Wasn't he there when Anders / Justice went insane and went terror-bomb and started the Templar-Mage wars ? So, what drove Justice mad, now Varric wanted too for Cole / Compassion ? Things could have gone very wrong here. Solas is correct to be really worried.
@@gendoruwo6322 The difference between Anders and Justice was that Anders allowed Justice to be in his body, the spirit was able to peer through Ander's mind, see his memories, the injustice of the mages, the hate, the anger. All those things corrupted Justice into becoming Vengeance and destroyed the Chantry that caused the War. Meanwhile Cole is purely a spirit, he made himself appear human and is pretending to be human, going against his nature but he is himself fully, he didn't posess anyone, what he experiences are his own, not through someone else's eyes.
Cole is rather frightening when he loses control of his usually serene personality. I actually thought (and hoped) he was going to rip that cowardly excuse of an ex-Templar to shreds.
The game gives you the three starter members, a Mage/Rogue/Warrior so you have a balanced party and can feasibly open all pathways (Rogues-Locks, Warriers-Flimsy Walls, Mage-Veilfire). Outside of those three? You can tell any character to fck off initially, they have to be accepted to join the Inquisition proper. You can also get most of these optional ones kicked out of the Inquisition later, by making them hate you. Cole, Sera and Blackwall will automatically walk out if pissed off too far, Dorian actually requires being ordered to leave or punched. The only ones you can't remove are Iron Bull (he's getting paid a LOT, he's professional enough to not get on your bad side) and Vivienne (she seems to take a delight in trying to piss you off instead)
Varric's always been good people. He knows Cole's just a kid in a lot more ways than one. Honestly, he's almost bar none one of the nicest people in the series - the uncle who's rough around the edges and let's you stay up late if you keep quiet about it,
.... xD talk to me i just made this decision. i hope it was for the greater good..at first it seemed bad because cole was all "i'm still hurting"...and i was like, "crap..i made the wrong decision" but then varric came and took his mind off the hurt. hmm.. apparently when he's spirit he becomes more distant and aloof. kinda like dry solas, heheh..i just realized that him being more human he'll be hanging with varric. verses if he becomes a spirit he'll be hanging with solas interesting. anyways though..i'm still playing the game and i have no idea what the heck will happen in the end :0

TheAntiPrep95 crap, im sorry. i did'nt mean to make it seem like you thought spirit cole was a better ending xD on the forums and on the spirit cole videos people had been saying that spirit is the best ending for him since he'll be returning to his roots. basically saying exactly what nutty professor solas was saying in the game to varric spirit cole is aloof, plain, stale, and exactly like solas when it comes to fun. no thank you x] he is indeed more happy as a human/spirit combo. rather than just a plain spirit
Before Trespasser: Ugh I am so conflicted on who to trust on this advice.... After Trespasser: Fuck you Solar, you stay 1000 miles away from Cole and Varric
Yes, and no. Darth Vader's "I am your father" has been done a thousand times in literature. Though that's one of the things that made Star Wars great: cliches and archetypes blending together into something greater.
WrittenInShadow It actually is a Star Wars reference. A lot of Cole's lines when opening dialogue with him references movies or other games, like Citizen Kane, or KOTOR.
I like how there is no good or bad choice What feels like doing the right thing is so subjective in this situation and cole will be happy no matter what You can either make him more of a spirit and he'll be happy, help people and stay pure like a child When you make him more human,he feels more mature. He becomes able to grow and learn and he will be able understand and help people by more meaningfull ways than wispering in their ear. In conclusion: *Cole is an adorable cinnamon roll and I would die for him*
While I understand Solas's perspective on spirits is superior, Varric had insight into what happens when spirits have become intertwined with people. After he failed to save Anders from becoming a terrorist, he wasn't going to fail Cole by letting him become a murderer.
You're a real boy now, Pinocchio! Lol, Cole is so many things: the Scarecrow, Pinocchio, Peter Pan (at least he kinda dresses like a cross between him and the Scarecrow).
7:11 and that's why I love Varric. Solas doesn't care about killing people, he wanted to kill the mages who corrupted his friend and I didn't let him. But Varric, even though he wants Cole to grow and would have been easier to give him revenge, he doesn't do it. That's why I follow Varric's lead and let Cole be human. Let Cole learn from the better man.
10:35 "The left hand misses a friend with two different names". Aw, guys, I think Leliana misses the Grey Warden. Us. :,D Or maybe not and I forget something about her background.
I read the book Dragon Age Asunder and everything that transpired in Cole’s personal quest quickly made me realize exactly that this templar was the one who abandoned Cole in that dungeon before it was even said. Now I just want to give Cole a hug.
'how do i put honey in Lelianas wine without her noticing?' Varric: "i can help with that" Such dad energy but also so fricken wholesome... i actually loved this, and when they walk away its almost like Cole is whispering to varric 's-so whats the plan?'
Cole is so curious to me.. the young me identifies with him so strongly because all I ever wanted to do was make people happy and let them forget the hurt the hate and see them heal.. then I was the one being hurt, needing the heal and leave my hate and no one in my life knew how to help or what to do and so I was left alone to die in the dark.. with time and faith i've ironically turned out a lot like Varrick now and im proud of that change and growth and yet.. some tiny shard of me is still that scared screaming child waiting in the dark to be saved, and I think.. I think that little cole shard is always going to be there, and it reminds me to be like Varrick and help them heal
I really really just love Coles Voice Actor! He is so good with Coles weirdness and cuteness! Also, I made Cole more spirit. I think that is just what he is. After I saw what happened to Solas friend I was afraid, making him more human, could also change him for the worse. He also seemed sso happy to finally found himself again without the real Coles memory. He might be a little bit more 'robot-like' like some said but I don't know. It just seemed right for him.
If y’all like Cole, you should read Asunder it goes into detail about Cole and the Real Coles Story (The Cole in the current Time is the Spirit of Compassion the real Cole befriended and took over his body when Cole died in the Spire from Starvation the reason he was there was due to him 1) being a mage and two murdering his father and killing his sister
This makes me wish so hard that they'd made Cole a romance option. Imagine how interesting the relationship between a compassion spirit becoming human and the Inquisitor could be.
Wow Cole everything he goes through I'm glad that you get to learn more about him! I always liked how they made Cole look he has that hair that covers his eyes and makes you wonder.. And the way he always spoke.. His voice acting how his first piece of armor looked.... Cole, Solas, Cullen, Dorian and Iron Bull have to be my favorite characters in DAI but add people from DAO and DA2 then you have Anders, Fenris, Alistair, Zevran Morrigan
I would never made Cole as more human. I just... can't. I really loves him when speaking and blabbering a lot. *Or maybe I'm just really up to any banters*
3:41 "But it catches... tears..." I'm pretty sure there's a little fuckup here that no one noticed. Based on context, that's clearly supposed to be the word "tears" rhyming with "pairs", as in, "is torn on something." But the actor pronounced it as "tears" rhyming with "beers" as in water coming from the eyes. Voice director didn't care or ran out of time.
I feel selfish that I picked Human because i wanted Cole to understand Rhy's lesson and I wanted that Templar to remember his guilt. Also the fact that he may be less disturbing to others.
Actually like this more than the spirit one, yes I know Cole is still a spirit despite becoming more human, but still it gives him a chance to have a personality how to make decisions without people forgetting him
My Inquisitor was a real.. well jerk. Did all he could to secure the inquisition's power, but since Cole helped him with Envy, he had a soft spot for the kid.
I like this scene, up until the music suddenly stops as though it stubbed its toe. That always bothered me, and I have no idea what causes it to happen.
I made Cole more spirit because assassins need stealth and teleportation, plus his ability to sense feelings around him is also useful. I didn't drink from the well because of the scary advice that Cole gave, plus even Solas wouldn't do it and he is wise. I have plenty of humans on my roster, but I don't have any other spirits other than Cole.
Reminds me of my stepmother and my father arguing over which parenting is the best approach in raising my half-brother. I ended up being the Inquisitor...
FluffyNinjaLlama I was wondering if that could be the case. Which seems weird considering i've been getting a lot of approval from him and only once did i get great disapproval and that was when i let the wardens stay. Well thanks for the answer anyways.
I used to always go for spirit cole over human cole.. Solas made a good point about him being a spirit and keeping him that way and not corrupting him with human emotions etc it made varric seem really selfish and mis-informed.. But after trespasser and seeing that solas isnt actually a big believer in this whole "People can change" thing.. I now always make cole a human.. cause solas's reasoning for not wanting cole to change seems to take on a whole new meaning it's like solas's and varrics perspectives have totally flipped for me.with solas not wanting varric to interfere cause he dosnt beleive cole is capeable of being "more than what he is". while varric understands that it might not be what cole wants but its what cole needs.. in essence varric is showing cole great compassion for this situation where solas isnt.. brilliant writing :P I love it when extra content changes the meanings on scenes like this.
Varric...Varric let someone else touch Bianca? I like to think that after Cole leaves the Templar then my VERY anti-Chantry/Templar Dalish mage just waltzed up to him and annihilated him till there was nothing of him left standing
Does anyone know if you have to have a certain approval rating with Cole to trigger the option to take him to Val Royeaux like at the end of the video? I finished his quest line but did not get the option. I couldn't find any information about it when I tried googling it, either..

MckenzzieRose n
7:00
That moment when everyone decides to be a little more careful about NEVER FUCKING PISSING OFF COLE.
Dat voice acting is just amazing. Cole is my ghost baby forever
+ShadowSamuel Thank you captain obvious, you saved the world once again -_-
***** Seriously though, why do you have to be so literal? They called him their ghost baby and you come over, Mr. politically correct.
+ShadowSamuel I think of him as like a small child or tween since he acts so curios and innocent. I love how cute he is. :D
It's good people remember Cole now. Sometimes all people need to make the pain go away is to know that someo e wants to help them. I know that from personal experience.
Jason Nakao It certainly is better than everything going your way.
For some reason I think Cole is an Easter egg in it of himself. He reminds me of Evan Peters from American Horror Story.
That subtle comment by Solas that he makes after Cole says "It's not abuse if I ask for it."
Nicely written Bioware. Nicely done.
This is actually more powerful to me, given my name is actually Rhys.
I prefer Human path because it beings about the conclusion to Cole's story that began back in Asunder. He finally learns what Rhys was trying to teach him.
I love Coles logic of how he doesn't want his new home to be where he does something that could go wrong. Always keeping his safe space, safe.
Solas: We cannot let Cole kill the man.
But it was perfectly acceptable to let you kill some mages for trying to protect themselves?
Solas is a hypocritical asshole. He thinks he's above all moral laws and reprimands everyone else for breaking some of them.
I want to hug Cole sometimes. :'
This was so powerful. I love Cole and Varric. Solas is like spock!
Changing the nature of a spirit is against the Prime Directive--or...wait, what am I going on about?
14:00 "He didn't kill his father. He was his father."
I died.
I adore Cole.
I love it when Cole is more human like, he is the kindest spirit companion and I take him everywhere with me
Cole is rather frightening when he loses control of his usually serene personality. I actually thought (and hoped) he was going to rip that cowardly excuse of an ex-Templar to shreds.
Hell, I would've helped him.
ravingPyrotechnician So would I.
From what cole said... that horrible fucking excuse of a templar deserved to be put down like a rabid dog
Holy shit.
Your Inquisitor is GORGEOUS
Retbullgivesyouwings Aww thank you ^^
The game gives you the three starter members, a Mage/Rogue/Warrior so you have a balanced party and can feasibly open all pathways (Rogues-Locks, Warriers-Flimsy Walls, Mage-Veilfire).
Cole's VA really knocked it out of the ballpark for this part.
I think this is the only time Varric actually allows someone else to touch and use Bianca.
Varric's always been good people. He knows Cole's just a kid in a lot more ways than one. Honestly, he's almost bar none one of the nicest people in the series - the uncle who's rough around the edges and let's you stay up late if you keep quiet about it,
5:15 Turn your volume way, WAY up and watch from there.
I got chills, lol!
Wait till morning wood
.... xD talk to me i just made this decision. i hope it was for the greater good..at first it seemed bad because cole was all "i'm still hurting"...and i was like, "crap..i made the wrong decision" but then varric came and took his mind off the hurt. hmm..
apparently when he's spirit he becomes more distant and aloof. kinda like dry solas, heheh..i just realized that him being more human he'll be hanging with varric. verses if he becomes a spirit he'll be hanging with solas interesting. anyways though..i'm still playing the game and i have no idea what the heck will happen in the end :0
*****
I've not got to this, I'm milking every location right not for everything it has and leveling up, I want to see 20 before the end. I just got with Bull to meet the Qun
I completed it already
TheAntiPrep95 ...............
that isn't good
how is that a better ending for cole? i've seen some people say that spirit cole is best for him ;w; we'll be wiping away his memories of rhys and his time in asunder won't we? well then..
human emotions with varric as his papa ftw
TheAntiPrep95 crap, im sorry. i did'nt mean to make it seem like you thought spirit cole was a better ending xD on the forums and on the spirit cole videos people had been saying that spirit is the best ending for him since he'll be returning to his roots. basically saying exactly what nutty professor solas was saying in the game to varric
spirit cole is aloof, plain, stale, and exactly like solas when it comes to fun. no thank you x] he is indeed more happy as a human/spirit combo. rather than just a plain spirit
"You should ask Solas to bind you" When I first heard that I was romancing the egghead. Needless to say there was a lot of inappropriate laughter.
His follow up of "and someone should bind him afterwards..." must have really been spicy to you then.
I'm glad I made Cole more human. I loved him in Asunder and reading his POV made me more resolute to make him human.
Varric is such a bro.
Before Trespasser:
Ugh I am so conflicted on who to trust on this advice....
After Trespasser:
Fuck you Solar, you stay 1000 miles away from Cole and Varric
14:00 darth vader reference lol
Yes, and no. Darth Vader's "I am your father" has been done a thousand times in literature. Though that's one of the things that made Star Wars great: cliches and archetypes blending together into something greater.
WrittenInShadow It actually is a Star Wars reference. A lot of Cole's lines when opening dialogue with him references movies or other games, like Citizen Kane, or KOTOR.
Darren Koh
Hmm. I actually haven't talked with Cole much yet.
Darren Koh david gaider just tweeted coles ramblings are game spoilers
I like how there is no good or bad choice
What feels like doing the right thing is so subjective in this situation and cole will be happy no matter what
You can either make him more of a spirit and he'll be happy, help people and stay pure like a child
When you make him more human,he feels more mature. He becomes able to grow and learn and he will be able understand and help people by more meaningfull ways than wispering in their ear.
In conclusion:
*Cole is an adorable cinnamon roll and I would die for him*
While I understand Solas's perspective on spirits is superior, Varric had insight into what happens when spirits have become intertwined with people.
After he failed to save Anders from becoming a terrorist, he wasn't going to fail Cole by letting him become a murderer.
I didn't know there were cutscenes directly referencing Asunder. o:
5:14
You're a real boy now, Pinocchio!
Lol, Cole is so many things: the Scarecrow, Pinocchio, Peter Pan (at least he kinda dresses like a cross between him and the Scarecrow).
this just reminds me how much i adore varric and cole! Such a great moment.
I've read Asunder twice, and I still can't decide which option best completes Cole's character arc.
Us. :,D
Or maybe not and I forget something about her background.
It could also reference Divine Justinia who was Mother Dorothea before she became divine.
I honestly though for a sec there that bianca was loaded
But hotdamn varic you somehow did what I expected without expecting it
"The Left Hand misses a friend with two different names..."
Did he mean the Warden? O_o
Maybe the Divine
Mother Dorothea/Divine Justinia.
I read the book Dragon Age Asunder and everything that transpired in Cole’s personal quest quickly made me realize exactly that this templar was the one who abandoned Cole in that dungeon before it was even said. Now I just want to give Cole a hug.
13:59 star wars reference? lol
'how do i put honey in Lelianas wine without her noticing?'
Varric: "i can help with that"
Such dad energy but also so fricken wholesome... i actually loved this, and when they walk away its almost like Cole is whispering to varric 's-so whats the plan?'
I love how Varric is just like “what are you doing to the kid”
You need to love your young you
I really really just love Coles Voice Actor!
It sucks that my game bugged and didn't let me finish the quest :( I can't even give him the amulet and he retains the same dialogue as before
If y’all like Cole, you should read Asunder it goes into detail about Cole and the Real Coles Story (The Cole in the current Time is the Spirit of Compassion the real Cole befriended and took over his body when Cole died in the Spire from Starvation the reason he was there was due to him 1) being a mage and two murdering his father and killing his sister
This makes me wish so hard that they'd made Cole a romance option. Imagine how interesting the relationship between a compassion spirit becoming human and the Inquisitor could be.
wait so Cole is reverse Anders? damn
*Or maybe I'm just really up to any banters*
i enjoy both Cole outcomes to the point where i cant pick a favorite. in both he's much much happier
God I fucking love Cole so much.
So in a nutshell Varric becomes Palpatine and Cole Anaknin but less robot
3:41 "But it catches... tears..." I'm pretty sure there's a little fuckup here that no one noticed. Based on context, that's clearly supposed to be the word "tears" rhyming with "pairs", as in, "is torn on something." But the actor pronounced it as "tears" rhyming with "beers" as in water coming from the eyes. Voice director didn't care or ran out of time.
I feel selfish that I picked Human because i wanted Cole to understand Rhy's lesson and I wanted that Templar to remember his guilt. Also the fact that he may be less disturbing to others.
Holly damn! Cole’s VA is amazing!
Actually like this more than the spirit one, yes I know Cole is still a spirit despite becoming more human, but still it gives him a chance to have a personality how to make decisions without people forgetting him
13:59 the Force is strong with this one
Uncle Varric! God I love him!
I know that Cole ends up happy no matter what you choose but this always feels like the wrong decision
Human cole seems happier than spirit
cole looks more scary than jason (friday 13th) when he is agry at one man =:0
Solas and Varric might as well adopt Cole as their own considering they’re one of the few in the group that openly accepted Cole from the start 😭❤️
Cole reminds me of a mix between a scarecrow and Leslie from Evil Within.
Tears of joy!
Bro he never lets anyone touch Bianca
i just noticed coles dressed like the scar crow from wizard of oz
When he said, "I do not matter,"
I felt that.
Many of us probably felt that.
I ended up being the Inquisitor...
at 10.36 Cole mentions about the Left Hand, that is Leliana remembering someone with two names...... wonder who that person is.
I'm not getting the option to travel to Val Royeaux with Cole after having completed the actual quest. Has anyone else had a similair issue?
You need higher approval
Just goes to show, we care more about who's making the point rather than the point itself
***** Yes you need high approval with him for Val Royeaux, but I don't know exactly how much
James Norton, the actor who plays Cole, has a wonderful voice. Listen to the first 26 seconds of this video (at least) to hear him doing some lovely reading. You're welcome.
ua-cam.com/video/nF1iuKfstmg/v-deo.html
Also, Cole's little laugh at 12:16 warms my heart every time.
