HOW TO: DIY Roof Rack Gutter Mounts
Вставка
- Опубліковано 8 вер 2024
- If you can use a tape measure, grinder, chop saw, and can half ass weld you can fab these gutter mounts. They're extremely easy to make and pretty cheap. The materials you'll need is a piece of flat bar 2" wide, a piece of C-Channel, and a few grade 8 bolts and nuts. Thanks for watching and remember to LIKE AND SUBSCRIBE!!
As men, we can make our own sheeeeeit.
Awesome design! Thank you so much!
The market for roof racks is huge with so many brands but they all have one thing in common which is the high cost. The funny thing is that most of us can make these ourselves, and with some "basic" thinking, we can make it to suit our needs based on vehicle type and use. Your project is inspiring so thanks for making the video.
Thanks dude
probably more sturdier than any store bought.. good job and thx for sharing...
Dude thanks a million! Gonna build a rack for my vanagon this weekend. Appreciate the super simple idea. Best wishes to you and yours~
Heck yeah! Low budget, moderate skill, elegant DIY mounts. Thank you!
I just got another XJ and probably gonna do it again pretty soon!
hell yeah dude! now I can move my 24 foot ladder without risking my windshield. good work thanks a lot
I started watching your videos years ago when I first bought my XJ, and this video always stuck in my mind. I finally got a start on my roof rack and used this video for help. I posted my video recently, check it out to see part 1. Its more of a flat deck style rack than a basket like yours. Thanks again for taking the time to post the video with details.
Looks really good. Love the XJ. Don't ever get rid of it. I got rid of my 98 and I regret it.
great job , been looking for a way I could mount a rack to my car
Very similar to what I built. Coat them in Plasti-Dip and it cuts down on paint scratches.
@@bedlamite42 good tip.
My god , simple and cheap but works like a charm , greetings from Sweden , now to build my own so i have something to mount my 6 lights with xenon 😎
Very clean job. Doesn't need to look perty. That matches any type of off road car.
Mine were fabbed custom like that . Although I found mine at the junkyard off an old work van . I am about to paint my rack hopefully tomorrow . I could haul a lot of weight on mine . I was on a budget and had to do all right angles .
Wow so simple with the c channel. Thanks for the tip
Thanks a bunch for the explanation, im gonna go borrow some steel from work and make one of these.
It was a fun project and it saved me HUNDREDS of dollars.
EXCELLENT JOB, ITS JUST PERFECT I LOVE YOUR INGENUITY, WE ARE IN TIMES IN WHICH WE GO OIT THERE AND BUY EVERYTHING ALREADY MADE, THATS NOT GOOD, LIKE YOURSELF WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO CREATE IN OUR OWN, THANKS FOR SHARING
Very nice, think I’m gonna build mine like that. Thanks
You're welcome. This is what the page is for
Looks great
Just what I was looking for, thanks
This is brilliant. Thanks
Badass roof rack
Steeda04SVT ha, thanks
simple and effective! thumbs up
Great info and thanks for keeping the video short.
I love it… 👍👍👍👍👍😎
Thanks for the info... saved me $800 plus on buying a roof rack I have a stick welder so no prob .
Glad I could help out!
Awesome, build looks great also don’t like racks sitting high working on this for my disco 2 thanks
Nice one! Been looking into making my own roof rack for my discovery. Think they are way over priced to buy so am going knock one up. Helpful video.👍
alex jackson yea dude, pretty simple. Just timely
Thanks im gonna try this
I like it! I have used the smittybilt brackets before (nice but expensive)... I will use this as inspiration for the next project... THANKS!
thanks man. i was planning on building my own roof rack and gutter mounts... i way overthought it.
Kendall Mitchell that's easy to do. I was over thinking myself until I seen how JCR did theirs. I seen them and realized how easy it was
Smart thinking with using the C channel!
The only issue I can see is that these will likely damage the gutter as they basically crush it in, so for my car I may use something different to C channel as it has chrome trims on the gutter.
It did leave indentations on the gutter rail.
Hell yeah, about to make a roof rack for my ford e350. I’m a welder by trade.
This will be cake for you
Awesome build
Nice video and clean build. These things are so damn expensive! I don't have access to welding but i did find this helpful. Thanks!
thanks that was awesome man
fantastic hack!
THANK YOU
Been finding a way to carry a spare around. I don’t have the money for a 700$ roof rack and i don’t have rear space because of a subwoofer and typical carry multiple people around. My dads a Nascar welder so i guess i can give him a project and my card and let him go at it
I'm a novice welder and I found this to be a fairly straightforward easy project. Didn't cost a ton and is nice to have.
How has this held up, roof racks are 1K it’s cheaper for me to buy a welder practice and make this. Thank you
The roof rack has held up perfectly. No issues at all. I would advise using some loctite blue on the drip rail fasteners because I did loose one. Lol.
@@jnork5005 thanks for the response, will keep it in mind. Thanks again for the video
I think it looks better than jcr
It gets the job done. Put some allen head stainless fasteners and it would look good.
How's the clearances above the doors. No prob?
jesse miller I did grind 1 bracket slightly on the driver side to get it to clear the top of the door.
is there a chance that the gutter will break from the weight..??
It's doubtful unless it's compromised by rust.
do these mounts slide in extreme conditions? how do i avoid the sliding
Not sure how to avoid sliding because it never happened to me. Once clamped, it never budged.
How do i make sure I buy the right C channel?
You gotta gotta get whatever you think will fit. Fabrication is some trial and error mostly.
I got the same Jeep bro, what light bar and mounts you got for the windshield
It's a Chinese Ebay curved bar. I pulled it apart and clear siliconed it to prevent moisture getting in. I got the brackets from ebay as well.
@@jnork5005 would you happen to have links for both items, my jeep is an 99 just wanna make sure everything fits.
@@markus1681 i don't, but these should work just fine.

This will scratch the gutter paint ?
Yes, if you are worried about that I suppose you could rubber coat the hardware.
Super awesome job and video!! I'm mainly worried they will bend the gutters. Have you found that to be the case? Thank you so much!!
How wide is your rack itself? Is the rack also custom?
Did you use 2" or 3" flat steel for the mounts?
How could i protect my paint so that I do not destroy it with these or really any of these mounts? Looks like a rust starter without some sort of rubber foot or something in there.
Thomas Brasse all of them bolt on. If you like, you could use something, i suppose.
how wide of C channel steel did you use?
jonah carlson 2 inches I think.
How tall is the flat bar??
They were all different lengths since the roof is curved. I put a 1/2 spacer under the rack and the roof, centered it, and tack welded them in place. I'm not sure of the lengths.
Hello. I know this video was posted a million years ago, but I wanted to ask; Would you mind making a set of those mounts? I'll pay you 50? Man if you could, I'd be very grateful. I was thinking if you made me a set, instead of welding em on, I would just drill a hole through them and my rack and bolt it on in six spots. If you'd be ok with that, please let me know. I'm leaving my number in a reply, below, for you to text and will take it down in a couple of days. Hopefully you'll see it on time. Thanks for your time.
This would be a way better option. I have no way to bend metal.

How wide is your rack itself? Is the rack also custom?
I made the entire rack myself. I forget the exact measurements. It's about 46.5" wide.
