Toilet Flush - Increase Flushing Power for Kohler Canister

  • For toilets with 3 ¼" flush valves, you can noticeably increase the power of the flush by holding down the handle longer.
I spoke to Kohler and the valves are set at the factory to limit the volume of water used. The only things you can change are the height of the water in the tank and the slack from the handle to the connection to the flush valve. Once you have adjusted these to the best levels, the only thing you can do to increase the flush power, is to hold down the handle longer.

This video is old AF. I have this issue with my Kohler water saving toilet. I started searching for options today and this video came up recommended. It basically told me what I already found out. Now in 2021 I'm thinking of swapping out this old style flush canister for the old style flusher with the plunger and float. Thank you for this video 9 years in advance for the problem I'm having now. LOL!!!

This advice still holds ten years later. Plumber just installed a Kohler Canister type toilet and I thought that the installer did not adjust the flush volume correctly and was about to call him back until I found this video. As in the video, the water level in the tank was at the canister fill line, so no adjustment needed with the screw mechanism. But there was only a small amount of water in the toilet bowl, and our hold toilet held much more. I tried the hold the handle down longer technique and indeed, more flush water left the holding tank and at the end the toilet bowl water level itself was higher. Problem solved! I did see that the physics of the water entering the bowl after a flush can handle most solids even with the smaller volume. Very helpful video.

For anybody interested - we have these canister flushes in our Kohlers and the flush kept getting weaker.
Chain length is good, and tank fill right to the top of the canister - no leaking/running.
We have terrible water in this town, and sure enough - when I saw mention of clogged siphon jets - I checked it and it was super restricted by mineral buildup. Used a small screwdriver to clear that out and BAM. Flush is much strong.
This is a better solution to holding down the lever and using twice the water!

I just recently experienced weak flushes in my 15 yo Kohler. Not only was the water level low in the tank, the flexible tube sending water into the center of the canister had come out and was sending water into the tank but apparently not the correct way. Problem solved.

For those who've had your toilets for a while and experiencing problems with the flush, I came across some other comments on one of the MANY videos I've watched while trying to fix our problem. One such comment is recapped below in case it can help anyone. I'm sorry, but I don't have the link where I found it - I've been reading up on this issue FOR HOURS!
    Hard water and scale build-up:
    Empty the bowl.
Check inside bowl rim jets and gently scrape off any scale present.
Reach down into opening and carefully feel of the water outlet from the tank
(round hole aimed to the back of the toilet)
It should be smooth and not obstructed.
If not smooth, then it's probably chunks of mineralized deposits.
Must be gently chipped or removed.
Once you've cleared all scale build-up in the bowl rim jets and the water outlet, your toilet should operate like new. Our toilet is two days old, so this will not be a solution for us. But hopefully it will help someone else.

Holding the handle down was not an acceptable answer for me. I have the right answer. I drained the toilet as much as I could and poured CLR (vinegar can also work) into the bowl to clean out the siphon jet hole. This loosed up all the mineral deposits from my hard water and now the toilet flushes like new.

  • @timbermansam

Clean the siphon jet way down near the “main hole” where waste goes. The siphon jet gets clogged with scale buildup. Use an Allen wrench, small screwdriver, or drill bit to dig the gunk out. My Koehler worked great for years then gradually got worse. I had to hold the handle down for a complete flush. I cleaned that siphon jet last night and it works like it did when new!! Seriously no more handle holding!!!

The time the valve stays open is controlled by ports on the bottom of the canister, that let in water so the canister stops floating. There are several ports, of different sizes, that I think must have been designed so you can adjust the float time (hah!) by plugging some. Hot glue is a good way to plug them. Plugging the two large ports gives about one second of flush.

Get a rubber hose coupling that is the same diameter as the center overflow and increase the height so the tank can have more water inside it. Increasing the height will allow more water before it goes down the overflow. Also adjust the water float so it fills to the new height. And still hold the handle to make sure all water is used if needed.

Holding the handle does get you a bit more water but the water also comes straight down the sides rather than swirling leaving streaks. Looking to just take the guts out and put something else in like the old toilets that use the whole tank. 1.28GPM is not enough volume and you don't save water because your flushing the toilet ten times as much.

I installed 200 Kohler Wellworth 4468-0 tanks with 4197-0 bowls. They have functioned pretty well but one frequent problem has been the fill tube coming loose from the "tower". I figured out how to repair these by using heat shrink tubing over the outside of the tower and tube. If you need to remove it to clear passages you can slit the side of the heat shrink over the tower and then re-attach it with tie wraps.

All other adjustments are correct. This is unacceptable. Toilet is installed and I'm not taking it out to return it to the store. I don't have a problem with holding down the handle for a couple of extra seconds but what happens when a guest comes over and needs to use the toilet. Am I supposed to come up with a sign taped to the top of the tank instructing the user to hold down the handle when flushing? This is what I spent $250 for? Thanks Kohler, for nothing.

Didn't know the history behind this technology and called the plumber back to tell me what he did wrong in today's install. No water in the bowl, erratic flushes, pressure in the flushes. Strange thing is I have two other Kohler toilets in the house with this same technology and they work fine. That's the reason I bought this one.

I might have a fix for this. To keep the canister from coming down too quickly you can glue some styrofoam or yoga mat to it. This should give it more buoyancy and it won't come down so quickly. And that should give you a better flush without having to hold the handle down.

I raised the waterline and tighter the slack which both made a difference but never thought of keeping the lever down. The tough part is going to be explaining to the boys that they need to keep the lever down. Ain’t going to happen.

    Another common problem people have with modern low capacity toilets is slow flush issues which are most often due to lime scale build up inside the toilet jet and holes. This is more of an issue now because as the engineering tolerances got smaller to use less water, the holes have to stay very close in size to their original design specs in order to work properly. You can commonly see lime scale build-up at the jet hole at the bottom of the bowl and it will look brownish yellow but never flushes out. This can easily be dissolved with Muriatic Acid (available at HD, Lowes, etc). The steps to carefully follow are;
#1 Buy a gallon for around $10-$15. Note that online recommendations say 1 part to 5 parts water but I think that is way too thin of a mix after using it several times with different toilets.
#2 Buy a good NIOSH mask, googles and gloves. You DO NOT want to breathe the fumes of this stuff! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.
#3 I use a 1:1 mix and my standard rule of thumb is 1 hour for every 1/8" of lime scale build-up. So in general, around 1 to 2 hours is a good soak time. If really bad, you may need 3hrs.
#4 Empty your toilet bowl. Shut off the water supply valve near the floor, then using a pitcher quickly pour a gallon of water down the bowl (not tank) very fast right in the center to help empty the bowl (the key here is use good aim and a very fast pour so that most of the water flows through the P trap in the toilet).
#5 Now mix up the acid water mix OUTSIDE of your house. Then pour in the acid / water mix you've made in another container (again, you should do the mixing OUTSIDE) and pour the mix in from the TANK (not bowl this time) and while doing so hold the lever down as if you were already flushing to keep the tank flapper open. This allows the mix to circulate around the inner ring top first and then it filters into the bowl but leaves some in the ring. This is very important because we want to clean both..ring and bowl.
#6 Fill it up with the mix so that the bowl is as full as it can be. Then cover the bowl firmly with plastic and turn on your bathroom vent fan to exhaust fumes.
#7 Set a timer for 1 to 3 hours depending on how bad your deposits are. Use 3 hours for very bad deposits (like really bad slow flush issues).
#8 When ready, turn the water back on and flush the toilet three times. If cleaned properly it should flush like new (providing your tank components work properly too).
#9 Now, you can fast pour a pitcher again (step 4) to empty the bowl, then reach down in the toilet and put your middle finger in the jet hole to feel inside it.
If the jet hole feels rough and closed up, you may need another treatment. Using a small round makeup mirror set down in the bowl bottom will also help you visually see the internal build up of lime scale. Angle the mirror at 45 degrees so you can see into the hole as far as possible.
#10 Providing your tank components are working and adjusted properly, I can assure you that this clean out method will get your old toilet flushing like NEW.
Last year I got a 5 year old $500 Kohler toilet for free off Craigslist because it had slow flush and they couldn't figure it out. They even replaced the tank components first and of course, it still didn't work. I solved it with 2 hours cleaning time, a new rubber base ring, and a $10 gallon of Muriatic acid.
To be clear, I now have a top of the line 5 year old toilet with new internal tank components that flushes like new. .. for $10.

Did anyone ever notice that the difference between the 1.28 and 1.6 gal per flush canister (for the same model tank) are bigger slots in the bottom of the 1.28 canister to let it sink a lot quicker. Look closely in some of those tiny bottom pockets and you will see there are tiny slots in some of them. I bought the 1.6 to replace the 1.28 (dissatisfied with flush volume) and it took forever to find the difference. Sure enough, the 1.6 works a lot better. I wonder if 5 cents of putty would have worked as well.

I just purchased a Kohler toilet and went crazy to find a 1.6gpf tank. Works great. The research I've done a side by side parts comparison between the 1.28 and 1.6 tanks and the canister valve seems to be the only difference. One is a 2" and one is a 3". I thought that was the difference but now you mention the slots. In any event I'm hoping I can buy a 1.28 tank and just swap at a 3" valve to make it a 1.6.

  • @chrispompano

O.K.....let me run this by everyone. For years now, I've been trying to "ReENGINEER" Kohler's design with my hated Kohler Memoir.......
I have the older CLASS 5 one piece Memoir 1.6 that is 9 yrs old and complained many times to Kohler that it has very little water for the rim wash, I told them the holes must have been drilled wrong since the water comes out straight down and does not swirl and there is a lot of space on the bowl between each rim hole that never gets any water to rinse 100% of the bowl. I even plugged the 2 front large rim rinse holes with plumbers putty to divert more water to the rear holes and it that helped a little. As of last week, they are going to finally send me a free new Memoir with the Aqua Piston but that will be a 1.2 gal tank. In the past I had tried the same suggestions in the video, but I always wanted to try to increase the volume of the tank and I think I'm going to finally try modification:
I'm going to try this on both my old Class5 3" Flush Valve and the new Aqua Piston although, it might be harder to work on the AquaPiston since its basically raising the overfill valve unlike older fill tube/overflow valves that are stationary.....
    .
Go the the Hardware store and find some plastic tube that will fit tightly over the fill tube to extend it higher. Since the Class5 flush valve ( Kohler 1039861....see Amazon) has a fluted top it might be harder to find a tube/hose that will fit. If that's the case, I figured I'd cut the fill tube in the center and would be able to find some kind of hose that would fit snug or with hose clamps to extend the overflow tube to make it higher so the tank will hold more water......
The only other problem is that when you raise the water high enough in the tank; water will leak out of the handle hole in the tank. Some kind of under water epoxy or ureathane caulk like Sika or other can be used, but I'm going to put a "battery operated water alarm" under the toilette just in case it would leak from the handle since it will now be under water.
Anyway, I tested my old 1.6 which actually holds 1.875 by raising the water level to the highest point. I placed a rubber glove over the overflow tube and kept adding water and I'm able to turn this 1.6 tank into a 2.375 gal tank or 8 cups more of water. I flushed the toilet and its a very noticeable and powerful flush with a lot more rim washing water in the bowl along with a more powerful lower jet.......
For those toilets with the flush handle in the tank lid, this modification should work great without any fear of water leaks out of the side mounted handle......
Any other suggestions or ideas are welcomed.

I just keep a 10 gallon bucket next to my toilet and start filling it before I start using the toilet. It takes about 20 to 30 gallons (mostly overflow since the bucket is in the tub) to use the toilet each time but a 8 gallon dump into the bowl makes sure everything goes down., It is funny how the workaround to the low flush toilet wastes 20 to 30 gallons per flush now that my old 3.5 gallon per flush toilet is gone. My sink has a low flow faucet and it wastes even more because I get bored waiting for it to fill up a pan I'm trying to wash so I just leave it on and go do something else and sometimes get distracted. I once let it run overnight when I had a really long day. My low flow dishwasher has to be run three to four times to get dishes clean. Even my low flow shower head has increased my shower time from 5 minutes to 20 because it takes that long to get all the soap off and get fully clean. Ever since all these low flow devices have come out my water bill has doubled do to the work around processes I have had to implement to get anything done., Am I the only one or are other people having these problems?

The noise comes as the last bit of water is getting sucked out.... sounds similar to a cruise ship toilet if you are familiar with that experience. It isn't a gurgling or bubbling that would be associated with vent issue and the actual flush operation is effective but the noise is just a bit much!

I have this Kohler canister style toilet and have a question: when the toilet is flushed, the toilet bowl appears to fill with water before the bowl truly flushes/empties. When flushed, the water in the bowl rises before flushing empty. This is different than when the bowl was new and the flush would quickly empty the bowl. What changed? How do I get the bowl to empty more quickly?

I had an American Standard Cadet Pro before. It did not flush solids. I ended up using more water with that "high efficiency" toilet than with my "water waster" toilet. There is no shortage of water so why restrict toilets?

    I have a different problem.
New toilet same brand/system, but the refill doesn’t always work. Sometimes I have to lift the tank cover and lightly tap the refill to make it start releasing water. Is there a fix or does the mechanism need replacing?

I really don’t want to hold down the handle. I’ve had toilets in the past that would give a good strong flush without holding down the handle. Anyone with suggestions? Just installed a new KHOLER

Hi, you can replace the canister flush valve with a flapper style for a more powerful flush.

I have this same toilet. Nothing to do with the cannister valve. You have to clean all the sediment from the syphon jet thst is in the actual bowl. The stuff will feel like glass but its actual sediment.

Hi, sounds like the fill valve. You can remove the cap on many and flush any particles. If not, turn off the water from the valve below the toilet. Remove the supply line and point the end into a bucket. Turn on the water at the valve and see how the water pressure is. This will also clear any debris. If you have good pressure here, it is the valve in the toilet. Easy project.
You may have shook loose some debris when installing it and it got caught in the fill valve.
Let me know if that helps.

I have a Kohler toilet with this kind of cannister. On the toilet it is written "1.6 gallons per flush or less".
So what you're saying is, this toilet is engineered for an inadequate flush and can not be adjusted? (sure, I can hold the handle down, but even after that there is still paper floating around.)
Our family has always been programmed "if it's yellow let it mellow" etc. for environmental/water saving reasons. So yeah, I spose it gets dirtier than if it was flushed after every spoonful of urine.
But if the toilet never completely evacuates the contents, I am beginning to understand why the bottom of this toilet has always been stained BLACK ever since we moved here in 2010, and no toilet cleaner has ever gotten rid of it.
So what you're saying is, it's time for a new toilet?

LOL. I just watched a Kohler video that says their toilets "maximize flushing power" with 1.6 gal or less. Um..."comments are disabled" for that video.

Hi, one thing you can try is putting in a fill valve that allows you to adjust the water in the bowl. If the fill valve you have isn't getting water up to the top of the trap in the bowl, it will affect the flush.
Check out the Fluidmaster PerForMAX or the Korky Platinum. If the water in the bowl is too low, it wastes the energy filling the bowl to the top of the trap before it starts the flushing action.

It is stained black because somebody snaked it.

For 2 years toilet flushed fine strong flush..Now it seems the canister drops too soon . Holding it longer is BS .There is no float in there so what changed ? but I think I will convert to the old style if you can .I will never by kohler again.
