My aunt and uncle worked for Eve Arden and her husband at their home in Southern California in the 1960’s and 70’s and absolutely adored her. She was warm, gracious and funny - she became a dear friend who stayed in touch even after my aunt and uncle retired. I love her films - always the strong, supportive, quick-witted friend who never lets anyone get the better of her - a wonderful role model for women even today. She’s timeless!

Eve Arden passed away ten years after this at 82 years of age. Her unique voice made her a favorite comic foil in radio all kinds of movies (nominated for an Oscar for her role in "Mildred Pierce" with Joan Crawford.) She had no trouble finding work, usually cast as "the wise-cracking, fast-talking friend." Such a character would find a place in movies across the range from the Marx Brothers' "At the Circus" to Preminger's "Anatomy of a Murder."

Eve Arden is a phenomenon. I'm old enough to have seen "Our Miss Brooks" (and as a kid, I loved it) but a little young to have seen many of her movie roles and none of her Broadway. I, of course, was too young to have an informed opinion of her as an actress. She portrayed the teacher I always wished i had, somewhere in my schooling. I assumed she was basically playing herself. She wasn't! She was totally in character doing a kind of Schick and she was quite brilliant in breathing life into that character/. I didn't realize how brilliant until your interview with her--and WHAT a career she has had--and by the looks of things, pretty much on HER terms. She also looks GREAT! I hope she reads some of these comments. I know a few celebs and most just don't have time to respond to their fan base.

Amazing interview. What a treasure is Eve Arden. She’s so unassuming about her talent, I guess it’s because she is a consummate professional.
The only strange remark is what she said about rehearsing five days (Mothers-in-Law) and that it’s took out the spontaneity of the taping for the sitcom. It just doesn’t seem to go with her career in that she always had a specific character and presence onscreen. I think Lucille Ball loved to rehearse to get the props right and to get everything right. And also when you finally do the taping, that’s when acting kicks in. Also, Miss Arden loves the stage and you have to play that part over and over and over for many different audiences. I just thought it was a strange observation on her part regarding the sitcom rehearsal of five days instead of the 2 1/2 days with our Miss Brooks. But what stories!!

Eve Arden's comments about the Mothers-In-Law are very interesting. Her preferred style of work was less rehearsal and more spontaneity. The Mother-In-Law followed the Lucille Ball style of many rehearsals with every move and word planned. The Mother-In-Law was filmed at Desilu studios, by Desi Arnaz's production company with Arnaz as Executive Producer. Creators Madeline Davis and Bob Carroll, Jr. were with I Love Lucy and other Lucy/Desi projects. Seems they dictated a production schedule that wasn't quite compatible with Arden's preferred style.

At 8:40 Eve looks so uncomfortable agreeing that “there was truth to Mommie dearest”. Firstly because Eve’s generation didn’t write books like Mommie dearest nor air their dirty laundry- that came with the boomers. Also she’s trying to give an honest answer to a very difficult and upsetting series of questions. Allegations of Child abuse are major. Personally I think the truth of Joan is somewhere in the middle.

Interesting what she said about believing Joan Crawford's daughter Christina about the abuse she suffered as told in her book (and in the movie) Mommy Dearest. Others have said it was all fiction and written to make money or as Christina's revenge because she was disinherited by Joan after she died. What did Eve Arden see with her own eyes and how close was she to the family (the Crawford kids) that she was able to see some abuse going on? Very interesting.
