  • I loved Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard in the very funny TV sitcom The Mothers-in-Law in the late 60s. I think my verbal introduction before all the great and funny snippets from the show pretty much sums it up!

Would you say that Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard were playing fictionalized versions of themselves?Their characters have the same first names as theirs but not the same last names. It seems that their characters were written to fit their real life personalities.

@@emanuellawton7942 I don't know, because originally they wanted Ann Sothern to play the Kaye Buell role, but they felt she was too similar to Eve, so they went with Kaye Ballard. They actually used the real first names of all of the actors, except for Deborah Walley who played Suzie. Then, of course, when Richard Deacon replaced Roger C. Carmel, he also did not have the same first name.

@briankistler8349 @briankistler8349 I have fond memories of this show and I remember watching the premiere episode on NBC back in 1967. Me and my brothers and sisters were in Oceanside, Ca. and we were there on vacation staying at a family friend's house. I remember it airing on Sunday nights. The comedic antics of Eve Arden and Kaye Ballard reminded me Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance on "I Love Lucy " which was no surprise since the show was produced by Desi Arnaz and Desilu Productions. I guess Desi Arnaz still had a professional relationship with Lucille Ball after their divorce because she got control and ownership of Desilu Productions back in 1962 when she bought his shares of the production company. This show and another sitcom show called "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir"( which premiered on NBC a year after "The Mothers-in-Laws" premiered)were two of my favorite NBC shows to watch on the weekends along with "Disney's The Wonderful World of Color".

I loved it too! I think season 1 was better than season 2, and I am not just saying that because they got a new Roger Buell. There was more to it than that. I notice in the clip with the meatballs exactly what you are talking about with the color. I don't think it was a coincidence that you had that bright reddish punch, and Eve Arden wearing a fluorescent green dress with a bright orange hat. I think they were experimenting with color. Prime time shows all switched to color in 1966, and this show premiered in 1967.

@@briankistler8349 Desi Arnaz, whom Kaye Ballard called "the most tasteful man in show business" made a poor decision in replacing Roger C. Carmel with the man who was as far away as one could get from Roger C. Carmel. Desi had Richard Deacon under contract for a TV series with Carol Channing. It didn't sell, so Desi decided to use Deacon for "The Mothers-In-Law," strangely believing the audience wouldn't notice or care that Deacon and Carmel were different in demeanor, appearance, and age. No chemistry with Kaye or any other cast member. Deacon was terrific in other series, however, like "The Dick Van Dyke Show," and "Leave it To Beaver."

You're probably including Mildred Pierce. I even liked her stage name a lot. Arden reminded me of two things, which both gave me a warm and fuzzy feeling. It almost sounds like "ardent" like burning: "ardent love affair" and it also rhymes with "garden" and Eve being the first woman on earth, garden and Eve harken me back to the Garden of Eden in Genesis. You probably know that her real name was Eunice Quedens.

THanks for posting. I was about seven when this series aired and remember loving it as a kid. I always like Eve's great timing and line delivery. As I got older I started seeing the many movies she had been in long before the series, where she had the same great timing. Anyone who hasn't seen Stage Door should check it out...she only had a small role as one of the many aspiring actresses in New York staying at the same boarding house, but even then she had that great voice and line delivery. The amazing cast includes Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball (also in a small role!) and Ann Miller.

As a young 11 year-old in 1967, I absolutely loved this show - most especially Kaye Ballard and her "Italian curses." I can clearly recall my late Dad saying that the show was "stupid" and "wouldn't last." My Step-mom agreed. Well, there I was the odd one out - but I digress... Anyway, thank you for posting this and bringing back fun memories. I have not yet watched the entire video, but a "special guest appearance" by the wonderful Jimmy Durante stands out in my mind - I believe this was in early 1969.

I should really do Kaye Ballard justice, since I wrote a note mentioning how long Eve Arden has been gone. Kaye Ballard outlived Eve Arden by nearly 30 years, but remember she was 17 years younger than Eve. Kaye died in January 2019, and nine months later, in October of that same year, her TV son, Jerry Fogel died and with his death, he was the very last cast member of the show to pass away. So it is not quite 3 years, at this writing, that they are all gone.

I've seen them all and I remember that one. I chose the ones which I thought either had the most laughs or sentimentality for me. The one with them singing North Dakota Moon wasn't really so much funny as it was sentimental for me. The one with the horse at the opera wasn't so much funny as it was over the top and interesting all the misadventures that Kaye and Eve had. The others I picked, I picked for the laughs. In season 2, I really did not like that they slapped a blond wig on Eve Arden, so that had something to do with why I did not pick the Don Rickles episode. I thought she looked better as a red head, a strawberry blond, or an auburn haired woman in season 1. They put lots of wigs on her throughout the show.

It was on Sunday evenings. Kaye Ballard talked about the show being in the top 10 or top 20, but I read elsewhere that it was not doing that well and that it was not even in the top 40 in season 2. NBC actually wanted to cancel the show after season 1, but then another network offered to pick it up for season 2. When NBC saw that they reluctantly agreed to a 2nd season, however, one of the conditions was no raise for the cast in season 2, which was normally traditional. I heard Kaye Ballard say in yet another interview, that they wanted to make way for Bill Cosby's first of two TV series, and so cancelling the show was an excuse to do that.

I watched the original run as a 12, 13, & 14 year old. I'm not sure if at that point I had seen I Love Lucy. If you were my age at that time, you got to experience some of these careers backwards, in a sense. For example, Jack Benny was all over TV in those days, doing specials and guest appearances. I saw many of these, but then got to see some of the reruns of the weekly series, then thanks to UA-cam etc I have seen the kinescopes of his first TV show in 1950, and have heard many of the radio shows, all the way back to the mid-1930s. Same with George Burns (and Gracie) - I had no idea there was a Gracie until I was familiar with George. I don't think I had any idea who Ozzie Nelson was when I saw this episode - I've since seen some of the Ozzie & Harriet shows, and heard some of the great recordings he did with Harriet Hilliard back in the 30s. These were far from the coolest people on TV at that time - Laugh In and the Smothers Brothers, even the Tonight Show, had them beat. But for old showbiz fans, these are great fun to watch.
