- Oscar-winning actress Jane Wyman talked with our TCM head researcher in 1995 about her career and starting out in Warner Bros. B pictures before evolving into the iconic star that she became. She also talks about the differences between the Hollywood studios, being friends with Kay Francis, working with Clarence Brown and Alfred Hitchcock and performing her most memorable roles.

Jane Wyman was one of the most popular MOVIE STARS of her era. Men as well as women liked her. Few stars of today can compare with her. But like Jane's interview here she explaines how back-in-the-day studio's groomed their actors. They had training that no acting school can do. Gee, I'm glad I was old enough to appreciate those stars of The Golden Age of Hollywood.
You might say that each (big) studio did have an acting coach to work with its contract players. Funny thing regarding MGM's Lillian Sidney. Debbie Reynolds swore by her, praised her as a great teacher. Esther Williams derided her "one-style fits all" method.
Her films with Douglas Sirk are so good! I love All that Heaven Allows and Magnificent Obsession, both incredible films with amazing performances.
I loved (LOVE!) Miss Wyman ever since I first saw her in later 1940,s-1950's until I die. This, my friends, this is one of the great actors that gave us very much happiness in the "movies." She is The Golden Yearss of Hollywood.

Jane reminds me very much of Maureen O'Hara at that time (1995); the way she spoke....so articulate...so informed. Just simply a class act.

I am an anachronism in 2021, a 28-year-old who should have been born 50 or 60 years earlier. And yet, I have never seen Jane Wyman in a film before. After watching this spectacular interview with this captivating lady, I will have to change that. She is quite impressive.

Jane Wyman was a major star, Oscar winning actress. I also admire Wyman because she never commented on Ronald Reagan.
When President Reagan died, Wyman issued a statement " America has lost a great President and a Dear Man". I loved Wyman as Angela Channing in Falcon Crest!
I heard one comment that Ms. Wyman had about Reagan. Right after their divorce she told Bette Davis, "He's so boring. Oh well, at least I never have to see that damned King's Row again." Lol
I loved bumper stickers at the time which read "JANE WYMAN WAS RIGHT"
@@rah62 Actually Jane Wyman was wrong. She could have been First Lady of the USA. She vastly underestimated the talent and skill of her husband.
Whatever age Miss Wyman was during interview, she is intelligent, candid and should be studied by those pursuing an acting career. She is tremendous!

Yes, yes, yes! I cannot say it any better. I love jane Wyman ever since I first saw her...and I am very grateful she got the Oscar for Belinda years ago. All I remember of this very young, very intelligent, incredibly beautiful actress is the finest performances and now I am very old, in 2023, and I still am happily watching her films and I always believed that what we see here, in interviews as this...this is the Miss Wyman... truly...she comes across being so honest and kind, everything that is good. Since a young boy in the 1940's-50's I saw her, adored her.
I wish I would have met her any time in my life. She is wonderfully different from many "big" stars or important persons...she praises very many who helped make her into the great star she became and she is not acting here. I will ramble on this woman of all women that very much brought us the "Golden Years" of Hollywood & stayed in that time all her life...(so humble always.)
This is one of the BEST of these interviews. She's so insightful, engaging, snappy, amusing, brightly reflective... and it is such a contrast to the craggy, ruthless matriarch she portrayed so convincingly on "Falcon Crest." Sometimes that sort of persona would be used to depict her in the media at the time, but she's 180-degrees from that here. Love the tasteful dress and jewelry, too.

I was born and raised in St. Joseph, MO and most of my life I was aware that Ms Wyman was from St. Joseph. The citizens were very proud of that fact. She is in the middle of our history of the beginning of the Pony Express and the end of Jesse James.

I saw "Lucy Gallant" on the Late, Late, Late show as a teenager and remember the fashion show part. Edith Head was in it!
Jane’s performance in “Johnny Belinda” has to be one of the greatest testimonies to the acting profession of all time.
When Belinda prays the Our Father over her dad’s body, man, your heart must be made of stone if you can’t feel her pain and sorrow.
She truly deserved that Oscar….

I never did have a good impression of Ms. Wyman but I have changed my mind. She is very professional and on the ball. I like her vibrant personality and positive attitude. I also always admired her ability to never bad mouth any one.
Her personality was much different that her stern portrayals in later TV roles which is how many were introduced to Jane Wyman. Her daughter Maureen had the same personality.
She's one of my favourite EVER from the Golden Age! So sweet, intelligent and charming...and WHAT AN ACTRESS!

Jane Wyman was an amazingly good actress. I loved her work. STAGE FRIGHT, THE LOST WEEKEND, POLLYANNA, FALCON CREST, DR. QUINN: MEDICINE WOMAN... she was a scene stealer in everything. One of my favorite quotes of Jane's is below.
"The opportunity for brotherhood presents itself every time you meet another human being."
She was perfect as Angela Channing on Falcon Crest! I’ve loved Ms. Wyman long before she played that iconic role! The best! ❤

Great talented actress with a personality of a genuine star
I only know Ms. Jane Wyman from "Falcon Crest". I have never seen a movie she was in. I had no idea she won an Academy Award either! Her character, on Falcon Crest, was so ruthless and here she is just as open, honest and chatty as can be.

Zing a Little Zong, with Jane, and Bing Crosby is wonderful!!
We forget now how big a star Jane was in the fifties. She was 'it' during that decade. She could do no wrong and went from one hit to another. One of my faves, even though it's not considered her best, was her turn in a movie called, 'Just For You', (1952), a musical with Bing Crosby. An early-adolescent Natalie Wood played his daughter. Wyman was wonderful and got to demonstrate her singing and dancing talents. Hers is another very interesting, enlightening chapter in the story of Hollywood.
I don't think anyone forgot how much of a star, an icon really, that Jane Wyman was.

My favorite movie she did was "So Big" . U cannot rent it on u tube. It only comes up on TCM. It also has Sterling Hayden in it. He is very young.

"I thought Jane Wyman was a hard, cold woman and I got to hate her by the time I was through with Bon Voyage. Of course, she didn't like me either, so I guess it came natural. I think she had some suspicion that I was gay and all I can say is that, if she didn't like me for that, she doesn't like a lot of people."
"She was very mean to me. She went out of her way to be shitty...but she was a total bitch and I think she was homophobic."
@@Garsons-oq4lh not denying Tommy Kirk’s comments but she had many openly gay chums, could very well be that they just didn't hit it off for some odd reason. She was a perfectionist and didn't have much patience for lesser than that could have been part of it as well.

Her daughter Maureen Reagan had a very similar personality -- bubbly and positive-thinking. Also they were both very social.
I saw her and Nancy Reagan in Sacramento walking to St. Rose of Lima Church back in the 1990s.
Wow. that's amazing! I've read that Jane Wyman converted to Catholicism and became a Third Order Dominican. When she died, she was buried in the same kind of habit that St. Rose of Lima wore. Thanks for this information.

What a great intelligent talented interesting woman Jane was!, I could listen for hours to her detailed stories! thank you for this interview which is also a great respectful homage to her legacy....so much in contrast to the shameful split of a second Olivia de Havilland, Rhonda Fleming, Cloris Leachman, Sean Connery and many others that sadly passed this year got at the Oscars!!!

I adore this woman. I think she's very modest, in light of all she achieved. I disagree with all the horrible things people said about her in the past. I read her biography, and I highly recommend it.

I LOVED Jame Wyman and her speaking voice.
I love her in her Douglas Sirks films. Her friendship with Rock Hudson was so honest that Rock always said that Jane made him a star.
I missed a lot of American movies when I was young because I didn't speak English and couldn't understand them. But now I do.
I just happened to recently watch "Magnificent Obsession" with Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson and was bowled over by how they thoughtfully interacted with each other. Wyman was at least 6-7 years (?) older than Hudson, but she was so elegant and honest in romancing the Hudson character. Lesser pairs of stars could inadvertently make such scenes cringey, but not so Wyman and Hudson. They were absolutely understandable and believable as screen lovers. Thank you for your explanation.
@@marietta1335 I'm so happy you have seen Magnificent Obsession!! It's a wonderful film with two big and lovely Stars. I have a book writen by Rock Hudson and he wrotes how wonderful Wyman was with him. They made two films together. 🌹
I liked and respected her for not bad mouthing anyone she worked with.
I was surprised however, that when mentioning the big stars at Warner's, and she mentioned quite alot, she failed to mention John Garfield who was at that time, one of Warner Bros leading actors. Also those she worked with when she started out like Ann Sheridan, Dick Powell, Alexis Smith etc.she didn't mention Priscilla Lane who was the leading actress in the Brother Rat movies. Her leading man and future third husband Ronald Reagan was also in BR in 1938 and 1939.
Movie stars of that era had such poise and were so self assured.

Just a note, when she mentions being ill and unable to start Belinda right away…she and Ronnie had lost a prematurely born daughter they named Christina. While filming Belinda in Ft Bragg she had an affair with Lew Ayers…and the Reagan marriage was over.

Wyman's recollection of Dietrich is interesting only because according to Dietrich's daughter her mother did not particularly like Wyman possibly because they were such opposites.

All That Heaven Allows and So Big are great stories and films. Jane Wyman was unforgettable in them. They didn't seem to make much of them using that tired phrase "women's films." Wish they'd stop using that term "women's films." "Women's films" or not, I love them.

Love this lady and always a joy to see. I’m still confused, though. VE Day, which she said was the day she got a contract with Warner Brother’s, was May 8, 1945, and not May 5, 1936. ????
She meant that she will always recall the date of her contract, May 8, 1936, because May 8 was also V-E day in 1945--the ninth anniversary of the signing of her contract.
How could she a B actress? 3 Academy Award nominations and won one.

@@lezliehayes5346 Exactly, Jane was never in Hotel. Bette Davis was in the TV movie that eventually became the series with Anne.
The Torchy Blaine films are great fun, Glenda was perfect in that role and Jane was really good, too. Glenda, Jane, Joan and Ginger are some of my favorite actresses.

VE Day was May 8, 1945 so it's strange she relates it to May 6, 1936.
I thought the same. Was there a VE day for WW1? Maybe she's just referencing just because she remembers it's on or around May 6, although it hadn't happened yet at the time of her story.
@@hudsony777 The end of WWI is celebrated on Nov. 11 which for many years was called "Armistice Day" but is now "Veterans Day". Wyman was obviously confused since I'm sure she was aware that WWII ended in 1945. Advancing age likely accounts for such mistakes.
@@piustwelfth Yes, I forgotten Armistice Day...also, I don't think she was confused about the year, she simply was referring to the date itself as being VE day even though it hadn't yet happened. It was a confusing reference, although she made a slight mistake about the exact date in May. Otherwise, she's quite clear about everything.
I really like Jane Wyman, but she's nine years off in her memory about her screen-test. V E Day was in May, *1945*--not in May, 1936. In fact, World War II hadn't even started in 1936. (And, as for people being "too young" not to know about this--I wasn't even born then, yet this was a key date in American/World history that anyone who even passed history class in high school should know.)
She meant DATE not YEAR.
