  • Scary Brakes OR Airy Brakes? - Proton Impian Spongy Brake Pedal Tackled - An absolute waste of time! #proton #car #impian #waja #malaysia
So ... Dad has given two thumbs up to the latest buy, this £300 Proton Impian (or Waja in Malaysia. Hi!) BUT he did notice that the brake pedal felt a bit spongy. Could it be air in the brakes? In the ABS?
In this video we bleed the braking system with a view of trying to fix that pedal - SPOILER ALERT. We don't (so its back to the drawing board)

I used to drive Impians for Humberside, I seem to remember the brakes never felt that brilliant even when the cars were relatively new.

I often found mushy brakes to be caused by seized pads and or siezed guide pins, especially on cars that have low mileage and some vintage!

@@JonCoupland My brakes became more and more 'spongey'. Tried bleeding, new shoes and sliders, nothing worked. At work, we had the Taxi testing done on site, so I asked the tester his opinion, he looked and diagnosed a failing master cylinder. Maybe Proton made them from chocolate?

Haha reminds me of my dad and me. Sometimes you have an idea, all it needs is a few hours of your time, most of the time it doesnt work out, but when it does, its fantastic.
By the way, most cars have a solid pedal when the engine is off, and it will sink a bit when you start it. If its excessive, you would diagnose a servo or booster fault. You should also strip the pads, clean up the sliders and any shim clips to make sure you dont have a minor binding issue with the pads. Sometimes theres also a bleed nipple on thr ABS pump itself if you wanted to try purging there, but it doesnt seem like the problem is air.

Time to go further into this Pete and John as you've change the brake fluid you now need to make sure that all the pistons are returning fully in the calipers and by doing so you will send the fluid back to the master through the ABS unit and if anything seal wise is stuck from lack of use it may very well free off when the pressure goes in the opposite direction now having said that you mention that he's had a replacement brake servo whilst you're in there it may be a very good idea to check the adjustment of the pedal push rod which will of course have a bearing on the feel of the operation of the brakes good luck I shall be interested to see how you get on

Have you tried clean all 4 ABS sensor? Or check the wiring. If everything is fine,it might faulty brake booster, hose or check valve. Get the double layered brake booster from mitsubishi or volvo s40,proton impian comes with single layered booster. In Malaysia we do upgrade brake system. Even satria GTi comes with double layered brake booster from factory.

You need to look at front and back brakes cylinders a full brake inspection your dad has found dodgy brake pipes my top tip recycle brake fluid through a pair of tights, some times it also helps to heat rear brake shoes up in an oven this remove any moisture that can build up in pads and shoes

Pads seized in the calipers is common especialy with the lack of use, that can give a dodgy feeling pedal. Also degraded flexi hoses that are expanding under pressure. If it has had a servo changed as you suspect sheck the adjujstment on the pedal and the pushrod into the master cylinder if it has any adjustment, might be miles off and youre getting a lot of extra travel.
I had a look on my Topdon Topscan and it has Impian/Waja listed within the ABS purge menu... might be worth a go with one, give me a shout if you want to try it..

  • @danielrussell446

Great video Jon and Pete well done could the issue be with that brake servo or brake pipes but if pedal firming up when engine off it’s working correctly?? I wonder if there is an issue with the ABS maybe needing a reset
Anyway well done know you will get there in the end all the best to you all Daniel

If one of the hoses has delaminated, the respective brake would be sticking/binding. One of the fronts looked quite dusty….. And missing handbrake return springs are no joy either. No vacuum leak in the servo feed?

    • @JonCoupland
      @JonCoupland  2 дні тому

Haven't checked for a vacuum leak but I think it would hopefully be quite obvious. Brakes have now been stripped and serviced and all seems ok (video to come) - we will keep working at it

Had this recently on our Fabia. It was a vacuum leak. Very hard to see with the naked eye but essentially one of the pipes had gone hard at a T joint and it was just sitting in place but not sealing. Pedal was hard with the car off but when running it would goto the floor.

John, have the rear pads been replaced? If so, after the pistons were wound' back and new pads fitted and the handbrake worked before the brake pedal pumped, you'll not get a good pedal.

Have you actually changed ALL the brake fluid, rather than just topping it up? If it's over 2 years old it will contain water which doesn't compress and will make the brakes spongy.

I’m from Birmingham and started work for Lucas Girling in 1979 - I can see why people criticise my city and I’m not going to argue but after 45 years of working with many aspects of this company I can proudly say that Girling brakes were and still are (under Lucas, TRW and ZF brands) some of the best designed brakes in the world - ps check your brake hoses for any expansion with your foot hard down on the pedal
