Took my Proton Gen2 into the MOT a few years back. The handbrake cable needed replacing, the mechanic said it would be ready by the end of the day. Three days later and quoting directly from the mechanic "In the six years I have been in business, this has been the hardest car I have had to find parts for."
Hi Jon it’s Chris Rays son as you know dad has not got wifi but I am hoping to introduce him to your videos when he next comes over to our house pleased you decided not to turn dads old car into banger racing bait. I did warn you about the brakes no one ever figured out why we had such a soft pedal but it always managed to pass brake test on mot day. I look forward to seeing how your dad manages to improve the brakes they use to scare me to death when I took it for its services and your dads correct the brake fluid was never fully been changed as for the exhaust I think I had it replaced a few years ago knowing dad there will be a bill some where. Have fun and enjoy the Impian and for god sake when it’s mot’d give it a good run take care. Regards Chris
Chris. Thanks once again for your hospitality on the day of collection and it was genuinely fantastic to meet your Dad. He was a brilliant character and so many people on the channel have praised him for looking after the car so well. I'm so glad I've been able to bring the car to the viewers and allow them to enjoy it too. Lots of work to come on the car. 😊👍
The Impian with the Mitsubishi's 4G18 engine has 2 auxiliary belts, one for the water pump and the alternator, and another for the power steering system and the aircon compressor. The squeaky part here is the aircon belt, but I'd recommend replacing both of them as they are so cheap and easy to replace. And the left-most button is for resetting the alarm and immobilizer system. When the battery in my Impian died, when the car receives power again it will automatically arm the immobilizer and will not allow the vehicle to start, that button disables the immobilizer.
I love how your dad couldn't resist a quick tinker 😁. I agree on the spares front, the mechanical stuff should be ok to find? Looking forward to more content on your waja sir!
Hi Jon and Pete a great video and the impian looks very solid and should restore into an nice car definitely worth keeping in the fleet! Ray certainly looked after his car and enjoyed it over its long life Bruce is lovely he’s giving inspector a run for her money!! All the best to you all Daniel
Hi Jon! It is quite interesting when your dad mentioned regarding the coin holder on the middle of the dashboard. It has a story of its own. When the Waja/Impian was first released in 2000, the coin tray wasn't there at the first place. However, since this is Proton's first effort to design their own car from scratch. There are some small imperfections found by the media who test drove it back in the day. Tengku Mahaleel (I forgot how to spell his name, maybe you can look after for it) gathered all the designers and let the media who did the test drive share their thoughts about the car. One of the media was Chris Wee (you can look for his UA-cam Channel) pointed out one of the few imperfections and one of them was that coin tray. That coin tray functions as support for the whole meter cluster top (gosh my English) because it retells a lot during their test drive. Sorry for a long explanation! Haha.
I think that car is an excellent find, especially for that price. Can't imagine you would find such a well serviced and good condition vehicle with such low miles for that price. Also Bruce was an excellent addition to this video, although you're right he does rather distract from the car!

Glad you figured out what the far left button does. The Impian actually had a fairlt reliable alarm/ central locking system but the Gen 2 and Savvy ones were always playing up. Keys were a bit pants. Glad to see it's as solid as you'd hope for a loved, 1 owner, low mileaged car. As before, the alloys used to peel after 6 months. Most Impians we sold came back for a new set under warranty.
Sorry to hear that you have been to Nuneaton. I hope that the visit wasn’t too traumatic. You should have said - you could have dropped in for a brew either on the way in or way out.
The more I see this, the more I think it's a very handsome car. I think this was a very good buy Jon, £300 for a solid motor? Considering that you can't seem to buy rotten cars for less than a £1k now and this is solid and complete. With the exception of the Savvy, I think I liked all the Protons we got here. I really liked the Persona Coupe but I bet they are non-existent now - like the Perdanas that Proton UK shipped here...
That Anker garage in the service book is on a industrial estate by Nuneaton station, I deliver to a customer further up from them so pass it in and out of the estate, it does some serious trade very very busy garage. I’ve tried to book my work van in for service with them in the past last but had to go elsewhere due to how busy they are.
I heard that proton is going to start exporting cars to the UK again. And as a Malaysian, I'm not as excited anymore because the current crops of new cars were not designed & developed by Malaysian but by Geely engineers in China.
Jon you can get Proton parts in Australia also when you absolute bargain Proton is old enough for TFOTU will you enter your very nice Proton in the concourse section it may win
@JonCoupland That's good that you have a friend in Adelaide because my l have no trouble getting parts for my Generation 5 Toyota Hilux any part for the Hilux with out any trouble and it is sort of rare there are a couple around but not that common
I guess that far left button on the dashboard was for the overide button for alarm, incase your alarm remote doesn’t work, and you have to open the door with key manually, then the alarm will trigger, so use the button to stop the alarm from keep “singing”😂 I’m from malaysia actually hehe
another fun fact: The things on the dashboard that said it was for the coin was actually an upgrade from the first gen of the proton waja to reduce the noise from vibration on the top of the dash. Got this info from other youtuber tbh
Would it matter if you could tell me which Kingbolen diagnostic device this is (as it is not linked in the description)? And you don't happen to know whether this can check the clutch status, relearn the clutch, teach the actuator of a Smart 451? Looking for a capable diagnose device for our Smart 451. 😅
