Wow this is amazing!! Love how much cranking it takes to finally start. Can you film from inside the cab next time? Would be good to see what you’re doing inside to get it started
Ha, I know man. I’m in south central MN. I believe it was 2019 that we went three straight weeks without going above 0F. At least it usually won’t snow at those temps.
Back in the day, when it was -20,we had to remove the spark plugs and heat them with a torch and get them cherry red ,then hurry up and install to get those 345s to start.
I have never ever had an International start that hard. I have a 1944 k 7, With a blue diamond 6 cylinder. Still starts great on a 6 V battery. At 10 below
This is a true cold start,my dad had a IH dump truck with a 671 Detroit it was addicted to either any day cold it wouldn't try to start without its fix.
I own a 1977 IHC 1600 load star school bus myself.345 2 brll automatic(Allison 545).Currently not running lost a bearing and dev head gasket. Very cool zzz truck!!!
I drove old Loadstars for the Illinois Highway Dept in the 80’s, I believe they were 1850 Loadstars. 392 V8 engines. They were fun to plow heavy wet snows with, our mechanic put dual exhaust on them and big open truck mufflers, they sounded sweet under a heavy load pushing snow. Ours never started hard like this, not normal for a binder
Those IH V-8s were always cold blooded. I remember in the early '70s being late for school because they couldn't get the buses started. It is probably even worse now because the gasoline is formulated for fuel injection and doesn't atomize as well in a carburetor when it is cold
Back in the early 1980's, the school district that I attended had a fleet of International S series busses with the 345 V8. One windy rainy morning, our bus was late picking us up....The driver told us that the ignition systems on a number of the busses had gotten wet and the busses would not start. Our driver and some of his coworkers convinced the district to start buying diesel busses which they did going forward.
Old 70s era International Loadstars have a special place in my heart. They bring back memories of my childhood, riding in the buses. Only the Loadstars had that distinct "whine" sound to them that I remember so clearly. How I would dream of being able to drive one, just to relive those memories!!! Let alone own one like you are so fortunate enough to!!! That said, I can feel how hot those battery cables and starter must be getting as you're cranking on that engine so long. One last question. Why oh WHY is the engine painted yellow, instead of the OEM red?!!! Nice truck by the way. I still remember the shift pattern too. If it's a five speed, 1st and 2nd should be at the top if I remember correctly.
Thanks! Yeah, I now know what it did wrong in this video, I was flooding it with too much choke. This is my dads truck which he had the heads redone many years ago. He said he repainted it caterpillar yellow cause he thought it may give it more power! It’s a 5 speed with a two speed rear end, it’s reverse is top left but the rest of the gears are in the typical pattern.
@@saltolamachs Ahhh the good old Cat engines. That explains the yellow colour. Interesting that reverse is to the top and left while 1st is to the left and down. That's the pattern used by Clark transmissions if I'm not mistaken. I always remembered the Loadstars having 1st to the top and left. So if you were to start off in 1st, you would be going down into neutral and to the middle gate and back up again. But if I'm not mistaken, 1st is geared so low that the engine is screaming its lungs out before you even reach 5 mph that you almost always start off in 2nd gear anyways. The school buses I remembered riding in had the more square shaped body than yours. I also remembered them being equipped with the 345 V8. Given that they were my favorite buses to ride in because of the whiny sound of the engine, I've always wanted to get the opportunity to drive one, one day just to relive those memories. I don't think I would have any problem driving it either, since I've now been turning wrenches at a dealership for a living for almost thirty years. It's nice to see trucks like this still on the road.
@@michaelchan8915 Well 1st gear is extremely low in this one. One odd thing tho is that 4th and 5th are basically the same ratio and the truck only tops out at 45mph. So there could have been something changed when it used to be a highway plow. It has the 404 V8, and what always stands out to me is how low or bassy the engine rumbles.
@@saltolamachs would love to see the whole process! And hear it from inside. What you do with the gas pedal, choke, etc. carbureted startups fascinate me and I’d love to see a long one like in your truck
Depends on the type of carburettor and it'll tell you in the manual. Solex and Zenith you do three pumps before you turn the key, others are different.
Jeez Dude. I swear I could smell that starter over my PC. If you plugged in the block heater, swept the snow off the cab and went in for a cup of coffee it would have started a little easier. Just Sayin'
I wonder how much gasoline you have in your oil from pumping that gas peddle? It just started and I caught a glimpse of that Accel coil that needs removed and tossed into the trash and a stock coil put back in its place. You'll get more spark out of a stock coil and a hotter spark too. Quit pumping that gas peddle while cranking the engine. That's why it's not starting.
So after I posted this video, I showed it to my dad (his truck). He said what I did wrong was I choked it too much and flooded it. It would have started pretty quick if I had let off of the choke. Learned from my mistake.
@@saltolamachs Thanks for reply. I would love to see a video of you starting it, taken inside the cab, and not using the choke on a really cold morning.
@@floodedcaddy You can kinda hear it in the video. I pumped the gas before I even started cranking which I guess is not needed for it. I did a couple more times throughout the video as well.
You should never pump the accelerator 5 times, on a cold day, until you determine whether it needs it or not. One pump and choke first. You flooded it by doing so.
Should have pulled the plugs and cleaned them, but I guess if you couldn't be bothered to sweep the snow off the hood and fenders, that would be asking too much.
As a repairer of starter motors, i approve of this message...
You would think the heat from the starter would warm the block up 😂
Hats off to the batteries, (probably not an interstate) and the starter.
Wow this is amazing!! Love how much cranking it takes to finally start. Can you film from inside the cab next time? Would be good to see what you’re doing inside to get it started
5-F ain't nuthin. I grew up in Northern MN with whole months of February 20-F the WHOLE month. THAT'S cold dude

От стартера нагрелся двигатель и свершилось чудо!
That thing started so easily I had to replay so I didn't miss where you bumped the starter!
I liked some of the old trucks pull the decomp. Valve spin engine fast push comp valve in eng started iup
That looks like an awesome truck ,Better than anything new.

I can`t get the ”laughing like a starter”-lady out of my head when I hear this starter.
Sweet old truck! It sure wasn’t happy about firing up that day, but you got er going.
*_BRUTAL!_* indeed! Cranks for 46 seconds, 45, 61, 60, 13, 38, 32, 23, 8, 24... then a handful of two and three second cranks before it caught. 😳🙀😵💫

@@saltolamachs well shoot make it happen, i know it isn’t hard to find an old Detroit out of a semi or something, but money i guess huh lol🤦🏾♂️
You really worked hard getting it started. You stayed with it and stayed on it for several minutes then it finally fired up.
So amazing.

Man, even that snow sounds cold.🥶
Might want to change the oil now that you have a half tank of gas in the crankcase lol. That's sure a nice truck! Love those Loadstars.

Who needs a block heater if you just crank the starter till it heats up the block.
Cary on like that and no starter
Reminds me of starting a d8 with pony motor.

If it was whining it must have had a Detroit
This guy must have a couple dozen extra starters.
Jesus, must be a top notch lifetime warranty on that starter....
This hurt to watch. Honestly....
This will hopefully remind you to check to make sure the block heater is plugged in next time.
Time for a compression test, TBI and maybe run hotter plugs in the winter. Definitely plugging it in.
That's a long starter roll. Good battery
Great sound!
Grazy how i felt a releave when it finnaly started running :)
OMG why do you hate that starter?
My thoughts Exactly!
My guess to use the heat off of it to warm the oil pan. I agree, long time cranking wears it out.
I thought the same lol
I mean killing it lol…I was like dang my guy let it cool off 😂
Apparently, he’s never heard of starting fluid. A little of that and he’d already had it started without having to grind away on that starter. 🤦♂️
You have some carb icing going on as it warms up. You might want to see if the cross over passage under the intake manifold is plugged up with carbon!
Man I’d love to see more cold starts of your IH. Maybe next time from inside so we can see what you do to get it started
Thanks, I could maybe do that. Although, there's not much to it other than pulling the choke and turning the key.

Thanks for the Christmas gift!!
This is a Bomb cold start ! Tickin like a Diesel 🎉
I would have used a 4 second squirt of fluid. Save on battery and starter without damage to your engine.
Nice truck
Truck is beautiful
Love the sound of that starter!
Right? You know it!
Need to pump the gas while cranking. Not before.

Starter is toast!!
Great video ! 👍
I’m surprised you didn’t blow the muffler off???? We had an old I H fuel truck
Lacking fuel. Could have started way sooner. Purposely didn't give it enough fuel to start until the battery was almost dead for dramatic effect.
Surprised the starter survived that stupidity!
That's one grumpy international
Make video of the truck plowing snow. It looks like a great rig
I do plan on making one. Just need another good snow.
I need a set of those batteries.

Weird. When you pumped it and it got fuel it starts….
Quite a gallop in there. May have a cylinder or two with low compression.
A simple shot of staring fluid through the air box??
How can you beat that starter to death?😔
Have you restored this truck? I see no visible rust.
No, it’s my dads truck. It was painted it many years ago but unfortunately there’s a good amount of rust underneath.
I would bet if still running today the amp gauge would still be buried on the plus..
The wall are made for vinyl panels

Question is, how much oil is left in the gasoline in the oil pan?
Sure you have a new starter for replacement
I want to know that brand of battery cause im buying one
Whats a battery starter? 4:49 Awfully hard on electrical and starter to keep cranking it.
Хорошая техника к вечеру но завещал!
I see smoke from the he starter
Your truck is trying to tell you something bro
One shot of starter fluid will save that starter.and the batteries
I probably should have. Just was determined to start it without doing that.
I would be the same way! Thank you for letting us enjoy it too!
What kind of motor is that one?
Been a while since that was started at the time?
It has the International 404 gas engine. It had only been sitting for a month or so.
She was not happy!
How much choke does it usually need in really cold weather? Does the engine take long to warm up? Do you ever start it without using the choke?
So after I posted this video, I showed it to my dad (his truck). He said what I did wrong was I choked it too much and flooded it. It would have started pretty quick if I had let off of the choke. Learned from my mistake.

At -5, it's just stupid cold no matter where you live.
