About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

Minoroities
Minor-arteries...😂😂
How Rob Reiner didn't break out laughing after that line by Carroll is a miracle. That was classic.
Carol was so under-rated in this show precisely because he was such a genius! Archie is a perfect character reference for a narcissistic entitled white nationalist/supremacist who is ignorant to their own bigotry.
Miss you Dad, but I definitely don't miss your hurtful bigoted hypocritical comments. ❤
Rob Reiner pausing and swinging his head before he delivered his next line was just a delay tactic while he composed himself, instead of simply breaking out in laughter.
It looked like Carroll O’Conner had to work hard to keep a straight face, too.
Scenes like this were GOLD!!!
Honestly, it looked like Carroll was looking at him like "I gotcha huh. You're about to break aren't you". Priceless...:)
Too bad he's still quite literally a meat head . Carrol was acting. Rob isn't.
@@DeltaElitesYeah he was really giving him the eye. Both funny guys !
Just suck that bottom lip into your mustache and carry on 😅
Don't forget that each episode of this show was filmed before a live studio audience twice in the same day. Then for each camera shot the director could pick which one worked better. If an improvised line happened in one of the two recordings, the reaction shot could be taken from the other recording.
And filmed in front of a live audience. I loved this show.
Not so much fun with a dead audience.
As opposed to a laugh track, which was also a thing in classic television.
@@dan_hitchman007Which the producers of _M*A*S*H_ detested! They never had the laugh track in the O.R. scenes though. And in the later seasons it was used more sparingly.

@@charlistubbs5525like a reboot? No thanks. Those always stink to high heaven.
Norman Lear brought the dark side of human nature into light with laughter and compassion. I had hope for humanity then. Now half the world is trying to pretend our dark nature doesn’t exist or is trying to control it in others , all while committing the most heinous acts in the dark.
Norman Lear was a freakin' genius!! 👍👍
This entire sitcom was an absolute treasure. Back when we all could laugh at the absurdities of life.
Yep. Shows a good, honest, real man full of faults, and insecurities realistically learning how to love his fellow man as himself. He’s not a “bleeding heart” he’s problematic and prejudiced as ALL HELL but he LEARNS to treat people by content of character. Not through one experience of “I was wrong”. And sometimes he was entirely RIGHT with his pre judgement! But he learned that folks like the Jeffersons deserve the same consideration as him regardless of skin tone. BUT that sometimes people use the fact that coloreds were/are mistreated as a free pass for anything.
Even with all that you have a GOOD MAN doing what GOOD MEN do! Work hard, love your family, support your country through good times and bad, be a pal to those willing to be a pal, and having an open mind and open heart but not so open it falls out!
Truly a great character study as real today as it was then! More Archie Bunkers! Less people who see him just as his “racist” (more so ignorance that couldn’t be helped) self…

It’s possible this was the third or fourth time they did it after Carroll had improved the line the first time. You see outtakes of comedies with live audiences and actors break up time and time again at a line.
@@cards0486 With live audiences they don't redo any scenes unless something major happens. I've sat in live audiences before, it's all one take.
@@hyzercreekI once saw Debra Jo Rupp, who plays Kitty Foreman on "That 70s Show", say she had always been taught, "Never break character until the director says, 'Cut'."
They were talking about a scene where Kelso comes running to talk to Laurie, jumps over the back of the sofa and rams his leg into the big spool coffee table. He never broke character, but Debra stops and looks over as she's heading up the stairs. She was concerned that Ashton had hurt himself and waited until he said his next line to continue up the stairs. I think he said he had.

I think you’re looking at it through rose colored glasses. That might be what it seemed like to you and me, but I can guarantee you that wasn’t everyone’s experience, perception or reality. Many of the shows from this time period dealt with social issues involving racism, poverty, women’s lib, homosexuality, etc.
And there’s never been a time when “nobody was above anybody”. Social elitism and class wars have been a fixture of the human experience since the dawn of time.

Who would have thought such an unlikely premise for a show would lead to such a hilarious classic as All in the Family? A masterful ensemble!
I'm 72. The entire cast was pure gold. I still watch the episodes every Sunday on METV. I'm pretty sure they can be found on Utube too.
Also, "In the Heat of the Night" another good series with Carroll O'Connor. Although nothing compares to The Bunkers. The Jeffersons hold a solid 2nd place!
@sherryherrick6567
I agree! All In The Family and The Jeffersons were 2 of the best shows on television. Archie Bunker and George Jefferson didn't hold back with the racial slurs and comments, but we could all laugh at them back them; and laugh at ourselves. I'm surprised Liberals allow these shows to continue to air.
Carroll And Rob looked like they both wanted to laugh. I love how Carroll kept staring at Rob, and Rob had to look away. They were good friends, and it is so hard to look at a friend when you're not supposed to laugh.
And it's so hard not to laugh when you're not supposed to laugh, too! Being with a friend would just make it harder! But to be honest, I LOVED when the cast of the Carol Burnett show would bust each other up! Especially Tim Conway! I miss good clean comedy!
Carroll kept looking at him like he was thinking, "This is IT, I'm gonna crack you RIGHT NOW!" They were BOTH about to bust up. That's funny. It was a competition in the end there and they both barely made it across the finish line. I'd call it a tie! xD
Right bc that's when laughs hit the hardest😂😂
That reaction was ridiculous and he saved it by countering it with a great joke.

I haven't watched this show since I was a little kid so I never really understood the humor until now because I'm rewatching it. One thing I absolutely love about this show is the brilliant stupidity of Archie - how he mispronounced at least one word in every episode and especially that the beliefs that he held were SO arrogantly wrong, lol. Like how white people had to be careful giving CPR to black people so they didn't breathe in the "wrong" kind of air. And as a woman who has been in a relationship with a narcissist who was verbally abusive, every time I see Edith stand up to him, which isn't often, I get such satisfaction. In today's society, this would have been deemed as a very manipulative and verbally abusive marriage, the way Archie orders her around, makes her obey him, and doesn't let her have her own opinions - and constantly calls her names like "stupid" and "dingbat". It's so mindblowing watching this and knowing how drastically different our world is today. But I have to admit, I'm glad I'm watching it all the way thru now, at 46 years old. 😊
