The Roots isn’t a jazz band, they were the first hip hop group to add in a live band, in the early/mid 90s. Check out the De La Soul interview on Jimmy Kimmel a couple weeks ago, Black Thought hops on and MCs live with DLS and raps Trugoy’s parts (RIP).

What you have to remember about Tariq Trotter is that he been doing this for so long, and works so hard at it, he has a bar or verse for everything and every beat. He's so good, he destroys the distinction between 'true' and 'written'. Because he just pulls them all out of his brain. That brain should be preserved for future generations to figure out! 🔥

This may be the best freestyle of all time. A few to check put that at least keep up, would be "locksmith" on kay slay, or his sway freestyle, both fire. And another freestyle I'd have to put in my top 5 at least would be king los on la leakers.
Black Thought is #1 on my greatest MC’a of all time. Body of work, quality, and never strayed away from who he is. Never conformed to the masses, plus I’ve never heard a wack song from him since I started listening to the Roots back in 8th grade in 1999.
