Not many ppl are actually going on these shows freestyling.
Originally freestyle didn't mean coming off the top. It just meant that your rap was free of a specific topic.
But when I was out rapping I had up to 5 verses or more that that I called "free verses" that I wasn't doing anything with but if anyone would ask me to rap I would rap one or two of these free verses that I had ready to go at a moments notice.
What Black Thought is doing is remarkable. He is actually piecing rhymes that he has together. He's just pulling them from his head and placing them where they fit. With a mix of bits of freestyle. A piece o a rhyme here and there. This is a master at work. Say a verse. Then pull another verse real quick and not miss a beat. Crazy!
I know you were talking in the moment. But Black Thought shows the difference between what a rapper is and what a MC is. There is a difference.

Not only that. He's just a lot more complex and intricate than most others. Plenty of people know him but they claim that someone like Em is supposedly better than him. There's tons of people that simply aren't able to understand what he raps.
He's easily one of the greatest to ever do it when it comes to actual valuable content in his lyrics. But most people aren't that interested in the content. It just has to sound fancy and dope. Hence why e.g. Em (a TECHNICAL master) is often viewed as better.
