This was fun :) Little bit of Jaw drop on the EVH on first chug. That was naaaaaaasty! I was also like whoa on the Revv sound but figured the weirdness was the cab, only because I've heard so many other samples of it (waiting for mine to arrive).
I like how he threw a curve ball right off the start knowing ola would be confused by the similar Washburn. Making him doubt himself before it even began.
@@notaperson5811 I ran my Peavey 5150 (Reissue) through a Mesa oversized 4x12 for a gig one night, and ever since the stock Peavey 4x12 just doesn't cut it. Once you get a taste of the Boogie, it grabs you by the balls and doesn't let go 🤣
@@notaperson5811 The Peavey cab had V30s, and the Mesa had V30s and Creambacks. Which I'd bet good money on that being the reason it sounded IMMENSELY better.
When Joel said "if you don't nail this one, I don't know", he completely gave it away. As soon as I saw that amp I was interested in seeing if Ola would get it, and Joel freaking gave it to him lol
I really like the concept! But just for the production, I would mabe look into the ones "Andertons" does. They let them struggle for longer which makes it more fun and reveal the answers at the end, giving it a dramaturgical peak. :)
It's a really good idea. Our ears play tricks on us when switching from one rig to another just like when switching presets on a modeler. It takes time to your brain to process the changes and thus it's hard to recognize anything right on the spot.
wow that EVH combined with the Mesa Boogie cab is absolutely ferocious. I wonder what would happen if I used a mesa cab with my 8100 valvestate head...
Haha! This was great. This will be a great series. I love that room too. I think it’s funny you thought the REVV didn’t sound like a real amp. That’s why I got rid of my G20.
I was pleasantly surprised to not see a Tube Screamer or some variant homogenizing every amp LOL! Put the Revv into one of those V30 cabs and I guarantee the sizzle returns LOL!
The REVV with the Randle had a unique sound! I kinda liked it...AKA 80's metal... But, the reality is that @58, I'll never own one of these boutique rigs! Just not in the cards I was dealt... Do appreciate that I can tune into your channel from time to time and crank my headphones and try to appreciate this level of Metal! Be safe my friend!
Speakers are the most important thing in the chain, not the cabs themselves. Cabs do matter, but the speaker is the biggest factor at play, and both cabs he guessed had V30s in them and the amp he wasn't able to guess right was paired with very different speakers.
Welcome, Joel! I love these types of videos. People buy with their eyes/eat with their eyes. My favorite Andertons videos are the blindfold challenges, so it's awesome to see this type of video in a metal context with you Ola. For future episodes, I'd love to see a rule of no allowing to touch the guitar to help you guess what it is. Hands on the bridge for palm muting and neck only. And how about having all the amps on with an amp/cab switcher footswitch?
@@jessehoopes7042 Agreed! I've seen so many people buy an expensive pedal, think it sounds amazing and then later realize it's a DS1 copy. The perfect example is the Satchurator from Vox.
Honestly nobody could lol amp snobs are lying if they say they can. Great example: I ran into a guy who claimed up and down that the parkway drive album “reverence” was recorded with a mixture of a Mesa Badlander and Marshall blended together with a Mesa over sized. This grandiose explanation because he just knew those tones because he’s played them both. Parkway drive recorded that album with Kemper profilers 😂😂😂😂
@@thatsameenergy Well I don't think they're lying as such, I just think they're over-confident with their hearing when they guess and get it right lol. That being said though I have made profiles and heard some subtle differences in the low end, mainly when palm muting. It fizzles out differently than a real amp does, no matter how good the profile comes out, there's always something there, but yes IF the profiles are made VERY well with little - no EQ tweaks done on the Kemper, then I highly doubt anyone would be able to tell the difference on a studio album, even if you were to reamp the same studio track with both, especially with all the other instruments going on. Was that guy saying he knew just by listening? 🤣
honestly the randal cabin that cuts off the high-highs somehow sounds the best. Most savage and evil metal sounding. And I actually think the cabin is easier to guess than the amp. The cabin makes a huge difference in the dynamic range of the amp. You just know your amps very well, but with someone else's amps, you would have easier times guessing the cabin.
Plus i kanten varje gång du involverar någon ny person i videorna 👍🏻
It's interesting that the part that makes the most dramatic change to the sound (the cab) is the one part you really struggled with this time around (that and the REVV i guess). You were able to pick out your Satan immediately, but couldn't tell one V30ish cab from another V30ish cab. I will say, that those Jaguar speakers sound incredible with anything other than an RG100
Great job Ola & welcome Joel! You guys were definitely having fun doing this challenge. Would love to see you do it again in the future. Thank you both!
Very cool challenge! It actually says a lot about our perception ("listening with our eyes") of sound with regards to our gear. Love it! Ola, you know your shit, and kudos for putting your 'mistakes' out there.
I really enjoyed this series Ola. Keep em coming. Hard. Really Hard. I like the chemistry between you both too. Joel is unforgiving to you in a hilarious way. Just as a good friend should be, honest.
Doesn't the Revv have a built in IR loader? Might be why the Revv sounded artificial. At any rate, the EVH el34 through the Mesa oversized is f**king disgustingly good
Have you ever thought about demoing some of the lower cost amplifiers that have all the same features: like the tri-rec, 1990 and 6262 by Bugera... or some of the less expensive peavey rigs like the old 80s/90s era 120watt tube twins or 80s/90s era half stacks from fender, crate, peavey, etc. The VTM120 was a real BEAST, as was the Classic 120 Twin with the built in phaser and spring reverb.
Awesome episode, I'm impressed by how you know how to dial in the tone of the amps, even without seeing them. I would love for you to try to get Yngwies sound in a video! I know he's mostly using a Marshall and overdrive pedal, but it would still be fun!
As the owner of a Revv Generator 120 Mk III, this video was concerning, LOL! I don’t know anything about that Randall cab but I play mine Revv through a Mesa OS 4x12 and it sounds awesome. Just goes to show how important a role that the cab plays in the overall equation.
Ola should come to Andertons to play their blindfold challenge as well. Would be sick educational yet entertaining content .. keep up the good work MR ENGLUND
I liked this one Anderton's video where they couldn't touch any controls or headstocks or whatever on a guitar. They just had to play it blindfolded with one hand on the neck, one hand strumming. Also, of course it's easier to know your own amps than random amps, but it's still not easy at all. Mix some modern metal amps with, say vintage Mark 2C+ and Rectifier kind of gear and stuff like that dialed in correct way with added noise gate for everything and everyone is on a guess trip.
MYSTERY RIG? WHAT IS IT? That's the point... I don't know...
Why didn't you use one of those things you get on flights?
I want more of this
I love blindfold vids like this, so I'll happily devour this content
It had no high-end sizzle, you see.
This was fun :)

not a bad idea. that way ola also couldn't exclude the ones he already guessed from the later rigs he's going through

You could use your amp switcher for this and play all the amps through all the cabs
Gah I really want a switcher and a second cab.
Good idea!

Revv throwing him off so bad just goes to show you how unique of a sound it has and how versatile it is.

Revv sales go slightly and slowly down, after this video :D

That Revv is a killer sounding amp.
There's an irony in the fact that the thing that influences tone the greatest is the thing that's the hardest to guess in a signal chain.
Speakers are the most important thing in the chain, not the cabs themselves. Cabs do matter, but the speaker is the biggest factor at play, and both cabs he guessed had V30s in them and the amp he wasn't able to guess right was paired with very different speakers.
