      They leave us hints and bread crumbs into their inner conflict that they battle every day alone and in plan sight. Breaks my heart when I see a warrior get tired of the fight and give themselves to rest and the end of their pain. Tragic. Rest in peace Chester.

    I find it weird that people rip on Brad Delson for playing overly simplistic guitar riffs. I don't see what else he could play that would fit Linkin Park's music any better.

      Same with Rob Bourdon's drums. He sticks to simple beats and maintains a fixed rhythm throughout the song, but that's what makes the song as a whole sound good.

      I agree! To me, a great guitarist doesn’t have to be defined by technical skills. Sometimes a guitarist just needs to know what to write to make the song work well.

    The one thing I usually like about Linkin Park that Numb doesn't display much of is Mike Shinoda's and Chester Bennington's ability to interchange their vocal styles. Very few vocalists are actually able to pull off that. Forgotten is a good example of this with their intro and bridge.

    Hearing Chester's isolated voice took me immediately back to the Kroger I worked st when my wonderful ex texted me right when I clocked in and said he died. Couldnt be bothered to just wait and tell me. Dude I was so tore up inside I told my manager that my grandfather passed away so he would let me go. That was easily the saddest and longest car ride home ever. What should have taken mayhe 10 minutes felt like hours while I was blasting the meteora album all the way home that was a sad day for me. 26 year old young adult at the time and I had an emotional breakdown over someone I didnt even know.

    Harmonically Numb is a looot like What I've done - similar hook in keys, wholes in bass, heavy distortion in chorus, 4 chord harmony, diatonic bridge, no shinoda rapping
    But two completely absolutely different songs!
    That's how you master the tools you have.

  • @megaascension2748
    @megaascension2748 3 роки тому +36

    This song really shows how simple but effective music can be while still being excellent. If you wrote the lines first, the guitar really emphasizes the stronger notes that Chester’s voice has on this track. And the synth isn’t too crazy either. The bass is simple too. But the simplicity makes so much sense for the song. I personally wouldn’t have changed it in any way.

    • @LRM12o8
      @LRM12o8 Рік тому

      I wouldn't call it a simple song, really. Sure, the individual parts are indeed simple, but the composition is anything but. This ain't your simple pop-punk hymn that anyone could have written, there's A LOT going on in this song and putting all these parts together in such a harmonic and conclusive way is not easy.
      Imo it's always been a big part of Linkin Park's signature sound to combine lots of simple pieces into a complex composition that lets you discover something new every time without sounding cluttered. My favorite example for that is Powerless. I've probably listened to analyzed that song a hundred times.

    • @megaascension2748
      @megaascension2748 Рік тому

      @@LRM12o8 Oh, I fully agree. I think that's what makes Linkin Park great, the individual parts are designed so that certain parts can shine individually. And Powerless is such a great underrated track by the band.

    7:55 Chester grungy voice a capella. Very few singers can achieve that sound. Rough but not screamed. Powerful but controlled. Sublime. By far the best singer (studio and live) of the Numetal scene. I lost interest in the band after Meteora with all the electro stuff but Hybrid Theory will always be in my disc collection and was the biggest album at tye start of the millennium when I was 18, even in Chile. We all feel like that when we are teens. And the sound was so original. Best debut and best singer of the new millenia

      Actually, imo and compared to the other videos of this series, what makes this song is the vocals and the production (synths, samples, reversed effects. etc) everything else is simple (I'm not saying that is bad). Check the police and Van Halen videos for pure raw musicianship :)

      Their songs like Numb show how genius guys in the band like Mike Shinoda and Brad Delson were at creating unique chord progressions. Their A Thousand Suns and Hunting Party album show more of their talent with instruments.

    Wow, that's amazing explanation. This will surely help me with making my own music. Would you believe this masterpiece was meant to be cut at one point? Record company wanted them to include the song on the record, that's why it stayed, otherwise it would be cut from Meteora and probably never released as anything else but LPU song. I guess when they made them keep the song there, LP decided to work on it more and turned it into gold

    The thing i love about this series is how effortlessly you teach new concepts to all abilities. You could play this to a class of people with little to no musical experience and they'd learn a lot, on the other hand you could show a group of Berkerley graduates this and they'd still pick up some new tricks.
    It's so awesome.

    Van Halen's "Push Comes To Shove" from their "Fair Warning" album.
    It's almost as if they were paying homage to the Rolling Stones during their "Some Girls" era and yet it's still, unmistakably, Van Halen.
    Why is it great? Surprisingly, the bass line (and tone) is exceptional. The rhythm guitar part is typically great, but atypical for his style and guitar tone. The guitar solo is tastefully composed, with good phrasing and tone, and complements the song all without suffering from the "Hey, look at me!" thing. I love the sound of the tune and the record as a whole. It's dark and raw and the least radio friendly outing they ever released, but for the better.
    Anyway, for me, it's their most perfect (unpopular) song ever... which will likely cause it to never be explored on "What Makes This Song Great?" but sometimes it's nice to be wrong.

      What!? This is Linkin Park not AC/DC.
      However radio is different all around the country but I can’t imagine this song being underplayed by any station that plays Linkin Park.

    Hello Rick!!!
    I'm a producer from Chile, most know as a bedroom producer, but I really love your work...
    I'm translating this chapter in spanish for all my fellow producers here in Latin America...
    Hope you don't bother... it's a hell of work to do... but I think it worth the time!
    I studied two years ago mixing and mastering in ableton live with WAVES support, and in time I started to purchase my VSTs at waves... I got a FB group of producers, most of them are electronic musicians, sound designers... I studied sound designing too, but I love the production and the mix and master phases...
    Andy Wallace is an incredible mixer... I love also the scheeps and CLAs work... And I follow your channel, and try to see all your videos... really amazing work...
    Regards from Chile!
