I am a 1/2 Ethiopian woman. My father who is from the Tigray tribe in Ethiopia married a black American woman. I will be honest, and am not trying to offend but will tell the truth. When i became of age to date, he told me to NEVER date or marry a black American man. At that time, our city was in the height of gang activity, and he had this idea that black men were dangerous and lazy. I think the images he saw on TV also tainted his image of black men here. As I got a little older, his tune changed. He got the chance to get to know and befriend some very great black American men. One day he said to me, it didn't matter who I married, just make sure he has a good career, hard worker, ambitious, and can financially take care of his family. I did meet and fell in love with an African American man. We have children and just celebrated our 10th wedding anniversary recently.

Her dad had a private conversation with me, emphasizing the importance of her completing her education (as well as myself in college), treating her well, and ultimately getting married without any fooling around 😂. Initially, they had reservations about me, particularly her older sister, who took some time to warm up to me. However, over the years, we've all become one big family.
I was raised with the belief that "black is black," so when my wife and I started dating, she warned me that her family might not immediately accept me because I'm a Black American. I quickly realized that their reservations were more related to cultural differences than race.

If Ethiopians don't want you, bc you're an ABM, my advice would be to not spend ANY time/energy on trying to change that. Just go where you're wanted, or stay to yourself. Focus on yourself. Build yourself. Be extremely selective about whom you allow in your presence. Life is far too short to spend your precious time on anyone that devalues you. Much less those that make these decisions without even knowing you. That combo of condescension & ignorance is something I'm simply unwilling to attempt to overcome. Yep, it's the same old story. Same thing happened at a lot of southern colleges and universities (including the one attended). After a few black ball players were accused of epar, it was like segregation 2.0 in a lot of places.
Everywhere we go, we black men carry the stigma of poverty, lack of impulse control, and sexual recklessness. You could go to Japan and ask a native to describe a black man, and you'll either have them describe an athlete, a rapper, or a caricature similar to Jody from "Baby Boy." I had a Hispanic coworker once tell me she would never date black guys b/c with the exception of a few rappers and athletes, "brothas are always broke." Dr. Claude Anderson TRIED to clue us in and too many of us refused to listen. When everyone else in the world collectively has power, wealth and influence and you collectively have none, nobody's gonna care about the one or two millionaires and billionaires you have in your ranks. These other countries don't care that we have Oprah, Jay Z, Michael Jordan, etc., nor should they, b/c the remaining 85% of the African American population is still struggling.
My dad always told me, no matter what flavor of woman you're dealing with, if you're gonna have the audacity to walk up in a man's home and ask for his daughter's hand, you' BETTER come with some assurances that she's gonna be well provided for. Too many brothas come from broken homes and they seek out mates from broken homes...homes where nobody's gonna demand that he prove his worth. Broken homes where all he has to do is act hyper-masculine and hip and throw down some smooth talk to get a mate. Then these guys go around thinking nobody else is gonna demand anything of him except a big eggplant and swag. But that's when the wakeup call kicks in. Once these young men step outside of that broken culture they grew up around, they're gonna see cultures that are run by men who OWN THINGS. Those lovely, bubbly, sweet, well-spoken, attractive young ladies he's salivating over are a product of cultures that ACTUALLY WORK. It's only natural that people from functioning cultures would be highly skeptical of people who drag in like refugees from a war-torn country and wash up onto their front porch talking about, "hey, can I holla at your girl."

Independent record labels started to change the music for the worse. Everytime we begin to have a foothold on something, someone gets the bright idea to "cash out". Yes, these are unfortunate stereotypes about African American men. Thank you for explaining this. It's just like how Africa is portrayed here in the USA. We as African Americans are fed negative things about Africa because the powers that be want us to be afraid of Africa. That's because they know that if our desire to learn more about Africa, and to visit Africa increases, we will become more united as black people, which will make us stronger. This is what certain powers in society fear.
By the way, I've met a number of Liberian people in my lifetime, and I must say, given the history that Liberians have with African Americans, y'all tend to understand African Americans better than some other Africans. I kinda arrived a little too late to this 1 year old conversation, but wanted to add my perspective to your closing question, "Why are there so many folks that feel this way about us?" Please everyone, don't come at me for this, I'm just sharing what I have observed as an Ethiopian woman to be the main reason or concern of parents for why they won't approve for their daughters to be dating an African American men. As you mentioned, the reputation is the main reason. Marriage is something sacred in our culture. No matter what you go through as married couple, you stay and work it out. Ethiopian parents talk about so many single mothers in the African American community and they don't want that for their daughters. In other words, African American men have bad reputation as far as Ethiopian parents are concerned. We're told not to be with them because they don't take care of their family, they leave. Another one we're told is, they are not loyal. They're always cheating on their women, their women are always fighting with other women, like why are you looking at my man, why are you calling my man, etc. For your name to be attached to any drama like this is a disgrace in our culture. You're basically considered a scoundrel. These two I've been told. Not loyal. Not family oriented.
I don't believe all black men are like this, but still enough to taint the reputation.

on top of everything you said, more often than not a lot of these AA men just run after habesha women for superficial reasons. many of them see us as just a sexual fetish bc of our features. what habesha parents would want to see their daughter sexualized, abused and left a baby mama? that community has a 70% rate of out of wedlock births. those men don’t even marry aa women they just impregnate them and leave them baby mama’s. and it’s not uncommon for the men to have multiple baby mothers. all of this is so taboo for ethiopians/eritreans. so i completely understand where our parents and elders are coming from. and are they wrong? majority of the time they aren’t.

Foundational Americans are raised in an environment of seeking more choices than some other cultures. But in the end, no one wants to be where they are not appreciated and respected. Families in all cultures have their expectations and desires. Just because someone is from the same cultural group does not mean that they are automatically desirable.

I'm a Descendant of American Slavery black man, and I'm married to an Ethiopian woman. And I'm not the only one in my city who's married to one. There's about a half dozen that I've met. Yes, it's true that Africans in general look down on the more ratchet among us. And yes it's true that northern Ethiopians (the Habesha) do so even more. However; if you're an educated black American with something going for your self then you're going to be treated better. They value religion, culture, education, tradition...etc. And yes they have a super strong social pressure to conform. They really do care about what other Ethiopians think when it comes to their public life. If an Ethiopian woman really likes you she will try and help you navigate her culture. She will tell you what not to do, and what not to say. The Japanese are similar, and I know black American men married to Japanese women, and they have to deal with a similar social norm. But yes, many Ethiopian women do like us, but they're connected to their religion, their family, culture, and traditions, and they will always value that! And so if you don't love and appreciate their culture, and religion then it's not going to work. Also it's good to try and learn her language. It will go far with her, and her family.

I also noticed the mental gymnasts these dudes go through to justify why they want to date in our community. "We all black" then date your own and clean up your own community first.

I was talking to an Ethio girl in my early 20s…and she basically told me the same thing….we lost touch and she married a guy from her village…I know they have kids together but I don’t actually think they are together…never want someone who doesn’t want you. If I had known from jump I wouldn’t have entertained her….even though she pretty much persued me initially.

You know exactly why they think this way. Look at your videos displaying black women with babies from many different men. People lying/cheating/ making bad choices. People like you help keep the narrative alive. This is why these women’s families have opinions like these. We spend so much time talking about all the derelicts and not enough time celebrating those that are successful, work hard, are doing good things in their life, raising their kids properly, etc. Look at the stats they aren’t in our favour, IJS😢

Something I learned many, many, many years ago… the people you help will tear you down the fastest. The friends and family I helped the most talked behind my back and swear they had to help me. Help no one. It’s like they subconsciously hate you for helping. Side note the more we go into the future of internet and hear black folks say and do the exact same thing I was told white racist say and do, I’m started to be convinced race isn’t a issue at this point. It’s starting to look we did these things and white society just made money off how we act. You’d think we’d be the most stick together race after hearing history. I’m a firm believer of what a people do today is a peak into what they always done in the past
