This session features, among others, saxophonist Gerald Albright and bassist Gerald Veasley performing "Watermelon Man". Go to www.StudioJams.com for more info.
this is 1 of those situations where you wish you had a stool way off in the corner to sit on, be quiet, and by the end of the day walk away a far better musician.
I only accidently found out about Jef Lee by having an account with eMusic around 2006 . I did the download and was so impressed. He is one my favorite players ever. RIP Jef Lee Johnson
even jeff lees throw away solos are studied and transcribed lol that man was unreal to me on guitar. i remember he had a solo on a old rachelle ferrell song called Why You Wanna Mess it All Up. it floored me. he went bananas.
Oh heavens. Even though the recording quality is poor, this is my FAVORITE of the studio jams!!! Just SO wonderfully funky, with a fantastic use of space. So NOT busy. Just awesome, men. Really, really nice hits and lines, and I love the modulation after the "chorus". Very cool idea, and stayed there just the right amount of time. OK, this is my favorite version of "Watermelon man". You guys should seriously re-mix this and release it!!
Interesting, maybe some like me hate the intro reggae abuse of such a spunky groove BUT hang in there purists because the way they SMOOZE the turnaround and the Guitarists solo, in places ala martino shredding is pure joy and bliss you just gotta wait for it BUT again jazz aint just for the listener theyre luvin it Nice work guys Thank You
where the hell did you hear reggae? lol these cats poured funk all over that studio from the first downbeat. not only that, that intro was almost the funkiest part. take an old james brown record, slow it down 40%...and u have this right here...
Kinda reminds me of Boogaloo Jones. I’ve got a few things from him that I was lucky enough to find. Have yet had to see a video of him live. If somebody knows of one let me know. This is a pretty cool groove you’re doing.
@themaschi That is correct-- I was surprised as I have that very same guitar sitting right in front of me. It's the Fender Aerodyne Strat from I'm guessing around 04-05? The original model had a pickguard and vintage pickups wheras the model he's using has no pickguard and some kinda standard pickups (they sounded good on mine but got noisy after a couple of years so I swapped them out). The body has a natural reverby sound to it which makes it cool.
Has anyone had any success purchasing this off the website? I keep trying to purchase the all the songs off the episode, and then it tells me I don't have anything in my shopping cart. -_-
Bloody cool! Starting dry like an old French wine, creeping, minimal harmonics, holding back, then sax with the melody, great!
the most soulful and funky studio jams episode ever!! R.I.P Jef Lee Johnson.
Jef Lee Johnson's playing is sublime. What an amazing player and beautiful soul he was.
This is as deep as the ocean. My funky soul wants more - it always wants more.
Oh my Lord that is a juicy fat slice of old school Fat Albert funky goodness served straight up delish.
Now, that's a comment! Right on, too.
