I love the way this song builds up, breaksdown, and then reconstructs itself, it's truly fantastic.
It’s a masterpiece
Perfecto!
i love the synthesizer break beginning at 4:07.
@@karlhelm875 same
this, and the gradual tempo change throughout are why I consider it a masterpiece
This album opened up the pandoras box of acid jazz and experimental music concepts for me.
It's classic and as good today as it was when it was first released
Agreed ❤❤❤
Bring the acid jazz back😂
There’s no such thing as Acid Jazz. Just some bs.
@@EvidenceBasedMedsin You mean, "There's no such thing as Acid Jazz, only Jazz." Hell, acid is Jazz.
I grew up with this music. The name says it all. Have a great summer fellas.
1973, homeys cruisin in a new 240Z with dope sound. blasting this song, enjoying that red Colombian. Those were the days.
Agreed ❤
That's Columbian red and Acapulco gold and don't forget the B.l.gonga, those were the great Days .
@@MccoyMister Haaahaaa, you were there too. Every now and then, that Thai Stick passed through.🤣
Colombian.
C O R R E C T I O N
240Z. The 260Z came later.
Man, I haven't heard this in a long time. My brother had this album and we played it loud. Yeah. Peace
Agreed.
Excellent 👌👍
my big brother got me hooked on rick wakeman, another great keyboardist.
I had to go to my kids middle school concert to see the jazz band play this tune. The rest is history. Love every headhunter record.
Good for you
We played this in middle school jazz band. That's how I got into this record!
Herbie Hancock - Fender Rhodes electric piano, Hohner D6 Clavinet, ARP Odyssey & ARP Pro Soloist synthesizers
Bennie Maupin - tenor saxophone, soprano saxophone, saxello, bass clarinet, alto flute
Paul Jackson - bass guitar, marímbula
Harvey Mason - drums, arrangement on "Watermelon Man"
Bill Summers - agogô, balafon, cabasa, congas, gankogui, log drum, shekere, surdo, tambourine, beer bottle on "Watermelon Man"
This song requires only one word masterpiece
What songs did Bennie play the bass clarinet on????
I swear that I hear an electric guitar on this too.
I learned the bass part on this song and its so cool
@@boataxe4605 Its probably just the clav
herbie hancock was brilliant dude set the jazz, funk community on fire with this album
Is* :)
Real talk
This is my ALL Time Jam celebrating 50 years today
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
@co😂😂😂😂❤rienschneiders4294
Memories!!! I was in the 10th grade when this came out, we were driving our band director crazy , this was our morning JAM before Mr. Boone would come into the band room, not that he didn’t love jazz, but looking back I think he got annoyed because we weren’t in TUNE,,LOLOLOLOLO, this was my introduction into Jazz, I hadn’t even heard of Bird, Trane, Miles , etc. at that time,.
Good for 😢
Good for you
50 years this day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeeeeeeeeeah!
I know, because it came out in '73, and I also came out in '73 😄
Cant believe it wow time flys
dude this used to be my favorite song when i was around 10 or 11, now im super into prog. this song was a weird rock enthusiast in the making lmao, coming to revisit after many years!
My dad played this to me when I was around the same age
I love the beginning bass,it's just so funky and gives off a good vibe and happy feeling.
Star wars did it first btw :p XD ^_^
@@chelseasorsa5730This album came out in 1973, a full 4 years before SW.
As far as I know, the bass is a synthesizer. But for sure it's funky like hell. You just cannot sit still while listening. 😁
Reminds me of too high by stevie wonder
Well, just a week ago, i went to a jam session in my hometown of Ústí nad Labem, Czech Republic, and there was a lady who played this theme on barytone saxophone.
Saw him last night. Herbie ain't lost a step at 84 years old!!!!!
5 words, funky jazzy souly fire beats 🔥
Agreed.
That's actually 7 words ☝️🤓
just one word for me... EARGASM !!
Man i was 9 or 10 yrs old when this dropped, mom and dad bought me and my brother these little portable tape players, i remember walking round listening to this very tune thinking how cool i was...LMAO!!!
You were indeed cool😅😊
MÙÇH ÇOOʻL😂😂😂
that funky business, allways keep the groove, and here we have the master himself
My Dad is a Jazz Musician and he introduced me and my 4 brothers to all the Jazz greats including Herbi Hancock
One of the best pieces of music ever written 💙
Huge cross over hit. People who didn't like jazz liked it.
Herbie Hancock was at the forefront of jazz fusion with the electronic sound and this album was a masterpiece example.
the fact it only had two chords helped.😀
Where Miles Davis meets George Clinton
That's me! I'm not a huge jazz guy. Some songs are ok. I like Misty, stuff like that Autumn Leaves, more structured songs.
@@fridgemagnetway more than 2 chords.
I played lead guitar in a cover band in the 70’s. This was one of favorite songs to play.
Did you play the whole 15 minutes?
Ironic, given that Herbie deliberately didn't include a guitarist in this band.
I played bass in a jazz trio back in the 90s and this was my favorite! So much fun, especially when you're locked in tight with the drummer, and that groove just begins to move people.🎉
@@VisibleMantra-c1x don't hear no lead guitar rhythym either...
@@VisibleMantra-c1xI can't imagine reinterpreting a jazz tune. That would be insane
Herbie Hancock...one of the Greatest of all times!! BadAss!!!!
Drumming is immaculate.
agreed!!!
I just saw him in concert tonight and he brought the house down with this finale!
Harvey Mason is killing it! !!! All the brothers on this joint needs no explanation.
Mason
Lucky enough to see Herbie Hancock play in Brisbane Australia last night, great show with a incredible group of musicians backing Him.
A real game changer of an album, a defining moment in Jazz Funk history with the release of this killer sminal album in 1973, which took Herbie Hancock onto another level, one of greatness with Paul Jackson (bass) Harvey Mason (drums) Bill Summers (percussion) as well as Bernie Maupin, a vinyl collectors must have
Bennie Maupin
When the magic hits at 08:35, pure bliss!
Omg yes! Someone else who gets it!!
Genius. Thank you Mr. Hancock.😊
A free flowing masterpiece. I love the mixture of audio in this version. The live horns and instruments far out weighs the later synesthesia versions. Herbie the doctor is far ahead of his time playing professionally at a very young age.
Wow I bought this on vinyl back in the late 1970's and never got it. Now I am old enough to appreciate it's genius.
Man, this is jazz-funk nirvana! I would give anything to see Herbie live
He's gonna be at NJPAC in Newark, Sunday.
@traceylennon1204 I'll have to hope for some European dates 'cause I don't live in States
This is Herbie Hancock at his best, but don't miss anything he plays on or produces. It's all fooking wonderful top quality music. He's the Don in my opinion. ❤
Fantastic cut by one of the greatest jazz artists!
Agreed.
THIS WAS MY INTRODUCTION TO DR.HERBERT HANCOCK IN THE 70'S BEEN A FAN EVER SENCE
The progressive development of a simple melody and just 2 chords troughs the entire song is truly genius
Without question this tune is part of the true roots of all funk/fusion cuts. I personally played it in youth jazz when I was just 15 years old !
The whip. Thank you Mr. Hancock. Kindly sir! Etc. +++
Classic Jazz Album Great Sound Funky 👍🎼🎵🎶😀📀📀 NYC
8:35 might be the best sound I've ever heard
Great tune at our gigs. Played this about 300 times
This is still a jam! 2024 and I'm still listening
❤❤❤❤
The groove of grooves.
Origin jazz funk fusion!
Since 70' till now, always sounding too good into my ears. 😆😎
In 97 or 98 I had the joy of seeing the Headhunters on their reunion tour at Montreux....A couple of guys kept singing the little beer bottle melody between each song and when the band finally started blowing on the bottles those two guy roared with pleasure. Guest appearances by Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Santana were an unexpected bonus!
absolutely legendary piece
That man was a genius!
Agreed.
And still is A genius!
"IS" !! HE'S ALIVE !!
Love that groove
That funky bass and drums make this song work.
Herbie Hancock is the best that ever😂done it 🎉❤ for real , for sure!!!!+!!!
This song never gets old
We played.this marching down Colorado Blvd in the Rose Parade 1977 Los Angeles Unified School District All City Band. The crowd went wild!!!
In my opinion this was the birth place of modern rap.
FRIGGIN LEGEND
My fave jazz tune fr
One of the best side 1, track 1's of all time
Used to hear this at 2AM leaving the Club.😊😊😊😊😊
Incredible drumming
Cleanest drum I've ever heard
Harvey is the Man!
The bassist on this tune is just too much on this classic Hancock tune. I love it soooo much!!!
Legendary 😮💨🔥
This is real music
Classic
This sound is insane. 🔥 🔥🔥
Gorgeous composition and excellent players,. I played this in full jazz band brass and the rest accompaniment in High School. It's needing further development to include that and much more. Brilliant, just the best what they did!
Pick up that horn, one never should think they are past on that element!
Evette Schafer, circa late 50', early 60's is my horn, they don't make them of this level and lost the formula upon long ago even in the $5k range or horns... That brass in the instrument, the mouthpiece being severely over the top. I am playing that horn to this day for sure my friend, and with soul!
The classics.
My dad use to play me this song all the time 😂
some of the sublimest music ever!
8:34 takes me to another dimension. It's my favorite part of the song.
I've always loved this piece! One of the absolute best pieces of music of all time!! Herbie is a master of music!!
Just remember hearing this on late night radio when i was a teen and wondering why chart music was so dreadful when there was artistry like this floating around.
Hello Mr. Hancock. I am a friend of a brother who is very dear to you Deigo Valentino aka Sabott Ali he is the brother of late Denise Valentino Hancock your late sister in law. We miss you brother and your beautiful music all the way from Marrakech Morocco. May God bless you and keep you.
I learned how to play the tune's first part in my high school jazz band. I loved it.
The Great Funky Jazz Music " C h a m e l e o n " by Herbie Hancock !!!!!
YES 😂😂
One of the first jazz albums I bought even on 8 track. Still sounds good after 55 years.
Love and still love it!
My older brother owned this LP
I used to get to hear stuff like this during the day onlow-power AM radio station WBEE from Harvey (Chicago) (they didn't broadcast at night). What a blessing to people with no tape decks or FM radios in our cars.
Cool to hear
I groove to this 🎉
The best funk.
THE MasterPiece ! Still there middle of july 2024 !!!
perfect
A classy classic period .
Could listen to it the whole day on infinite loop.
The best🎉
Class 🔥
Is is the word of the Day,and jamming right now sounds good deep .
Great Album !!!😎😮😅
In the taxi. On the way to HH live in Melb. Last time he came it was top 3 concerts of all time for me. Life is good
Truly iconic
Your right!
This music takes way back to the keys
as fresh today as it was 50 years ago
Bad Asssss Jam!❤
One of my favorites. Maying me wanna pull the vinyl out and listen to it the way I used to. Herbie Hancock...The Best
Mi maestro Mr. Hancock.
This SLAPS! GOD DAMMMMMN
I saw him,@ Syracuse, NY, @ Jazz fest this past week. Alongside with Gladys Knight, he is in his 90'$ ! Amazing social event. Closedown part of West Genesee street.
He's 83.
Lol 😅! He’s 83 years old!
But this sounds like a 38 year old!😎
this thing plays in my city's central area, there's an advetisement of something on a billboard of a mall...
so many times i've walked past it, intoxicated and with friends, always when this track plays, vibes always spark up
any time any place
Masterpiece💯
Legend❤
Pure GENIUS!!!!
Drummer is a god.
Yes, H.Mason is great ! Both very subtle and sharp drumming here.
