Are Real Estate Photos Realistic? Sometimes yes, sometimes no.

Have you been house hunting recently? Have you checked out websites like Zillow and MLS? Have you looked through real estate photos? If you have, did you ask the question, "Are Real Estate Photos Realistic? Do Real Estate Photos Lie?"
Often when we're looking at job locations we'll pull up Zillow or MLS. And we see a lot of "unreal" photos that are supposed to represent a property for sale. I have to say, I've seen the same Photoshop sky replacement on hundreds of photos at this point. Should we strive to really represent a property's actual esthetics, or should we just be trying to make all of the images pop?

I rarely if ever replace a sky. I also hold my clients accountable to representing the property faithfully. That includes the color temp of the images matching reality, both interior and exterior. That example picture is such a joke to the REP industry, I laugh every time I see the same sky behind a number of properties from the conglomo photo companies, regardless of the orientation of the property.

It's so funny when we look through Zillow and see that sky. It's everywhere! I often wonder if non-photographers even notice the same sky carrying over again and again. One of our family members was looking for a home in our area, and she became very frustrated with the difference between the images online, and the actual homes. She said it actually turned her off to several homes she looked at.

The realtors that prefer overcooked and use photomills to get animation-like photos.....ughhhh. Combine that with rising interest rates, sellers having to lower prices, realtors going el cheapo and everyone with a drone saturating the photography market. Seems like stepping over dollars to pick up dimes with real estate, especially when you have to compete with low dollar HDR shooters using overseas editors. Sure that is scalable as a business but the standards are like comparing a Ruth's Chris to Burger King.
