I've always watched this race with my focus being on HEG, but I never had any idea that Noah also broke the world record in second place. AND AT 20 YEARS OLD. Reminds me of Alan Webb at the Prefontaine Classics when he chased down the HEG. The man showed heart and pure will.
the hug at the end sayed it all . it was thanks to the pacers especially the guy who kept putting pressure on elgarouj that he broke this record .the way elgarouj run is just perfect , nothing goes to waste , so smooth as if he was a gazelle ,very efficient .
A record that Sebastian Coe broke three times in two years back in 1979-81, hard to believe this record still stands from 1999. What a race and finish.
Ran the mile at a high school distric meet. (1991) Fell at the start and had to make up 50 meters on the leaders. By last lap started kicking last 300 m to pull in first with 200 meters to go. Locked up with 20 m left and lost by seconds. Still humbled by the experience. This feat by EL G is just astonishing! Great Inspiration to never give up and you' ll probably never see this happen again in your lifetime.
This is just amazing. Look how tired the pace makers are and Hitcham still keeps going. Right now im trying to do a 4 minute mile it is hard as hell. These guys are truely amazing.
3:43.13... wow, as a former High School miler it makes me sick just thinking about how amazing that is. And sick for the guy who's name no one knows who also broke 3:44 and the world record but came in second. Greatest mile race maybe in history.
Noah Ngeny played Volleyball during his school years and didn't take up running until he was 17 yr. old in 1996 and by the time he was 18 yr.old in 1997, he set the World Jr. Records for the mile in 3:50.4 and 3:32 for the 1500 m. And in 1999 he ran 3:43.4 in the mile & 3:27 in the 1500 m at the age of 20. And he beat El Guerroui in the 2000 Olympics in the 1500 m and his time of 3:32.1 broke Seb Coe's Olympic 1500 meter record. Not too shabby for a guy that didn't take up running until he was 17. Noah's rapid progression over a 4 year period in which he had never run competitively, to winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics and running the 2nd fastest mile time of All-time, points to EPO!
I am destined to beat this record. Right now I am 15 and I have been running all my life. It's a passion. My fastest mile was 4:13 and my average is about 4:25. I plan to keep trying. I am the fastest person that I personally know, and I am very motivated to beat this world record.
Noah Ngeny made this race! The WR doesn't happen without his push, Gerrouj needed a challenge and Ngeny stepped up. This is, perhaps, the greatest foot race of all time.
Great sportsmanship, both Hicham and Niane were racing to the finish line only a couple seconds ago and immediately after they cross they celebrate right after they were competing
Nobody even knows the second place finisher even though he(Nayid) also broke the former mile WR. It was a very tight race at the end, it could have gone either way, but all of the glory went to El Guerrouj.
Probably the most under-appreciated second-place performance of all time.

I've always watched this race with my focus being on HEG, but I never had any idea that Noah also broke the world record in second place. AND AT 20 YEARS OLD. Reminds me of Alan Webb at the Prefontaine Classics when he chased down the HEG. The man showed heart and pure will.
I knew who set the new WR , but didn't know the drama at the finish . Outstanding performance by both runners ! !
My fastest mile is 1/186,282 of a second. I am a photon.
danny photon
I am a neutrino. They thought I ran 4 laps in -0.0001200304 seconds, but it turned out I just hadn't moved.
Stfu
That's is in any massy observer's time. In your own time, you ran the mile in exactly 0 second.
To be honest, I loved the hugs those runners gave each other at the end of the video most excellently.
the hug at the end sayed it all . it was thanks to the pacers especially the guy who kept putting pressure on elgarouj that he broke this record .the way elgarouj run is just perfect , nothing goes to waste , so smooth as if he was a gazelle ,very efficient .
Still hasn’t been broken and probably never will be
🦘super spikes, wavelight✨, 🇸🇯
@@GeoAce777in his dream 🤣
A record that Sebastian Coe broke three times in two years back in 1979-81, hard to believe this record still stands from 1999. What a race and finish.
What a great gesture and sportsmanship from the athletes who pulled El guerrouj at the end and hugged him ♥️
Great performance by Hicham El Guerrouj, what an athlete !!
Actually the world record is held by a baby in the comments section
lmfao
my name is no
Nathan Thornton the best one yet 🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂🤣🤣
I'm a vegan gluten free LGBTQ baby and I have a mile time of 2 seconds is that good?
Ran the mile at a high school distric meet. (1991) Fell at the start and had to make up 50 meters on the leaders. By last lap started kicking last 300 m to pull in first with 200 meters to go. Locked up with 20 m left and lost by seconds. Still humbled by the experience. This feat by EL G is just astonishing! Great Inspiration to never give up and you' ll probably never see this happen again in your lifetime.
Gerrouj looks like a fast smooth racing car bursting with power and speed but controlled and balance like a luxury vehicle 🏎️
He ran 59 seconds faster than my PR.
the fact that Hicham El Guerrouj's record hasn't been broken since 1998 is freakin AMAZING!
it won't be broken lol, humanly impossible
Greatest mile race ever in my opinion
Hicham el geurrouj the best ✌🇲🇦
الرقم الصعب الاسطوره هشام الكروج من المفترض ان يقوم الكبتن هشام بتدريب العدائين المغاربه وغيرهم من المتميزين العرب .
This is just amazing. Look how tired the pace makers are and Hitcham still keeps going.
Right now im trying to do a 4 minute mile it is hard as hell. These guys are truely amazing.
The fact that there’s almost no people at the stadium to witness that great race blows my mind!
When this video was uploaded I wasn’t born for 3 more years. I didn’t even know UA-cam was around this long
Im proud of my country
It's amazing how he beat a record over a full second, surely he trained incredibly hard I can't even imagine it
Almost 25 years since he broke the record and 25 years the record hasn't been broken since. That's a quarter of a century!
Are you kidding?! I can't even run half a mile in that time. Bravo to these guys, they simply have a natural gift!!
18 years ago is crazy
absolutely amazing, my inspiration throughout my running career.
Why is this man not as well known as he should be
3:43.13... wow, as a former High School miler it makes me sick just thinking about how amazing that is.
And he beat
El Guerroui in the 2000 Olympics in the 1500 m and his time of 3:32.1 broke Seb Coe's Olympic 1500 meter record. Not too shabby for a guy that didn't take up running until he was 17. Noah's rapid progression over a 4 year period in which he had never run competitively, to winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics and running the 2nd fastest mile time of All-time, points to EPO!
Everybody knows who Noah Ngeny is.
I can't think of anything scarier than an angry olympian running after you because you stole their french fry
thats a very specific fear you have
Honestly, I reckon I could take a miler in a fist fight.
@@0ffspringfan k
Just don't run
@@0ffspringfan dunno, if he can box you have a long ass fight in your hands. Hope your stamina is up
I never competed in the mile, but Hicham sure did an awesome job.
Best ever without a doubt, no one has even come close.
imagine breaking the world record and yet come in second place salutes to both of them
amazing how long this world record has stood
El G is phenomenal, an absolute legend!
I am destined to beat this record. Right now I am 15 and I have been running all my life. It's a passion. My fastest mile was 4:13 and my average is about 4:25. I plan to keep trying. I am the fastest person that I personally know, and I am very motivated to beat this world record.
Thank you Hicham 🇲🇦👏💐
That was AWESOME. I love how they both broke the previous world record, I was kind of cheering for the underdog at the end there.
This is probably one of the oldest videos on UA-cam.
Probably
Superhumans very awesome to watch thanks for posting this ❤
Noah Ngeny made this race! The WR doesn't happen without his push, Gerrouj needed a challenge and Ngeny stepped up. This is, perhaps, the greatest foot race of all time.
Everyone mentions El Guerrouj but you gotta hand it to Nyan also. Two people breaking the WR at the same time is insane.
I'm 6 and my time is 4:20 but it would be faster if I had legs
You might break even faster if you had a brain. 🙄
C Y? It’s a joke... who the the one with the brain now dumbo
STILL STANDING EVEN TODAY... Here after prefontaine classic 2021... Good job Ingebrigtsen!
Great sportsmanship, both Hicham and Niane were racing to the finish line only a couple seconds ago and immediately after they cross they celebrate right after they were competing
Hicham the greatest ever !
Wow... relax and effective strides and running posture, just like those in the textbook
Greatest runner of all time. What a stride he has. Fucking good luck ever beating this record
Up until now Morocco hasn't found a replacement for Hisham El gerrouj.
3 min 26 :00
the world has been running for 24 years
to beat it is not unitile
Run baby 🙂
Nobody even knows the second place finisher even though he(Nayid) also broke the former mile WR. It was a very tight race at the end, it could have gone either way, but all of the glory went to El Guerrouj.
it's not very common to find a white kenyan
loool😂😂
actually he is moroccan
Chris Froome :D
he is moroccain from المغرب
he is african actually
Hicham such a great runner! Hard to beat once he makes that turn on the final stretch
The hardest event on the track! Takes guts, determination, and believing in yourself!
people sometimes forget a mile is not 1600 meters. It is over 1609 meters
Everyone knows it's just widely excepted that that is a mile for some reaosn
I commented on this video back in like 2012? And I can’t find it anymore :(
The most impressive part isn't the time, it's that he seemed so casual when he was done! Didn't even act too out of breath
This is ben the world records since I was in day care. This man doesn't get talked about enough
