My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!
Can you read minds?? I designed my book covers two days ago and I'm not totally happy with it. So thank you for your awesome video.
🙂 🙆♀️
👍👍👍👍👍🙂🙂😀😀😃
Hi
My book series😊=
1) *Fool Me Once* = Protagonist taking a group selfie with a bunch of people, but is lovingly looking only at one person instead of the camera
2) *Fool Me Twice* = Someone holding a ‘will you go out with me’ sign , but protagonist is not looking there, but focusing on her work
3) *Shame On You* = Protagonist with one of those detective “who is it” boards, staring up in awe at who’s standing in front of her (the persons face is cut off)
Those titles had me HOOKED, good luck on your writing journey!
@@aesthetic_writer Thank you, you made my day 💖
THAT LOWKEY SOUNDS SO GOOD
AAAAA WHERE CAN I READ THESE? You got socials?
The titles and its brief is so wholesome to read, this will make an appealing romance genre novel. ❤
I’m interested in graphic design but i probably won’t design my own cover when my book goes out but my brain decided that doing a book cover at 1am is better then sleep so now im here... it doesnt look terrible honestly, 1am me was onto something
Wow, you designed your own book cover - awesome! I always thoughts you book cover looked amazing, and wondered who you bought it from. You are incredibly talented.
I'd love to see a video on exactly how you marketed your book! Just bought the ebook and can't wait to start reading!
I think you just saved me a bunch of money. Thanks!!! I want to attempt to make the cover myself for my book. I know what I like and describing that to someone is hard. Besides with the timeline of punishing i don't know if I'll have extra money laying around.
This is super helpful. Thank you!! 💛💛
I use this exact same process when I design book covers! I ALWAYS get inspired by current covers first. Another fabulous video!
hy where are u from
This was so helpful, Abbie and inspiring to help me make my next book cover. Thanks for posting!
I already have a lot of inspiration for the covers for a series.
Untrained Eyes (still a wip name, but I definitely want the final name to involve sight or lack there of). Eyes appear in the book in different symbolic ways. The most vital meaning is corresponds with the theme of the story: You should look at who a person is, rather than looking at what a person is. To exaggerate this, a few of the characters are mages in a fantasy world in which set mages are being hunted down. Some of the mages abused their might and now their kind as a whole has been isolated from the normal people.
My idea for the cover is quite simplistic. Work with black and white to contrast certain things. At first, the eye will be closed, later is will be opened and finally, it will be blinded. I would also implement two outlines of people in it. Facing each other at first, but they will be melted together into the eye’s pupil.
I'm not quite at the point where I am going to self-publish my book, however, this was really helpful and I am going to come back to this video when I am at this point. Thank you so much for creating this, this was so helpful. 💙
I’ve been waiting for this video! 😍 thank you! 💕
No joke, I wanted to learn how to make a book cover just a few days ago. Super great timing for this!
Your bookshelf looks awesome! 😃
Okay, the first step is actually really smart. I am going to start noticing what draws me to books after this. :)
I'd love to see a Photoshop tutorial on making a book cover!
🙂
Looooove your creativity! You’re so inspiring Abbie! Thank you xoxo
I love your cover so much! I can't believe the objects and flowers came from different sources, they mesh perfectly! It was really interesting hearing how you got the different pieces of art. I also love how you gave your cover hidden images and seeing what covers inspired you.
Trial and error is 100% important!
The software advice was pretty helpful.
I would love to try to design my own cover. The biggest flaw I see with author made covers is when they don't have an eye for it or stop the first try... I hope mine would look professional like yours. XD
Super helpful! I've made some covers before and didn't like them, then I made another and fell in love. Excited to try your tips in the future.
Good morning to you Abbie. Actually, that is what I'll be doing myself with my book cover since I'm an artist/cartoonist and animator. I also just started writing my first book as well. Thank you for your advice and God bless!
Well, I just like the way you make your pitch. First time I'm watching one of your videos, but you go, girl!
Hello Abbie my friend!!! This video was awesome, and I love your videos so much. I'm just a high school kid who wants to be a writer, and I feel like I get closer and closer to that goal with every video of yours I watch! Also, I too am obsessed with the MBTI😁 As a female INTJ (...like yourself??) It explains why I think differently than most, and it is SO HELPFUL when crafting unique and realistic characters! Thanks so much for the time and effort you put into your videos, and keep up the good work, love💛💚💙
Wow! I am also a High School kid who wants to be an author! I even have my very first book, The Adventures in Tree Wood Hollow, all written out, and I HOPE it will be for sale on Amazon within a few months!! 😁
@@chickenbruh4610 OMGGGG what happened with it?! Is it out!!! Update us girl or guy!!!
@@zeinaelwy YES!!! I got it published last year in November with Amazon, and am currently working on writing the second book in the series!!!
@@chickenbruh4610 what is it?
I designed the covers for my three part series called Finding the Sky using Microsoft Publisher.
Thank you I've been hoping you would address this because your cover is the best!!! Great job.
I design all my own book covers, and as Abbie said, have patience and persistence. I actually have a template for Amazon, which can be daunting, but it works. Thanks for your videos, Abbie. They are always informative.

Confession: I first thought your book was Self-Help when I saw the cover 🙈!
Wow, thank you so much for this! You've encouraged me to design my own book cover!
wow, your cover is AMAZING (great job!)
Incredibly helpful and informative. Loved this video!!
I ran my own creative services business for over 20 years, so I have experience in typography, graphic design, and printing. I would still seek advice from other professionals, even if it’s just requesting a critique. When I participate in NaNoWriMo, I create a cover image as soon as I come up with a basic plot and use it as a background in my Scrivener project. It’s great motivation!
Wow, you are so amazing!
I need to design a new brain to do what you are doing!
Good job! Thank you so very much for your desire to share your experience 🙏🙏🙏❤️
This video motivates me to continue with the before-publishing work! Thank you for making this video!
Your videos are so goooood and helpful. Really great value added to the writing community
i just read the Amazon preview of your book and I LOVE IT!
Okay, this is seriously so helpful! 👏🏻
I did design my own cover for my first book. I just wrote the book and now I am learning all the ins and outs of Indy. One thing I did with the spine is go for a "writing journal" feel. The spine is black and wrapped around the first few inches of the front and back.
You can't imagine how much you encouraged me to design books covers 😍😍😍 I've been always obsessed on how the books look like and now i'm planning to start designing my own and I'm dreaming of becoming professional one day ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for the Video!
Well your book cover looks amazing. Very cute!
I totally agree with you! I’m an author and artist/illustrator. I prefer to do the cover myself because I feel only I can visualize how my vision comes to light. Are there other apps or sites you recommend for book covers?
Thanks for this I was looking for this for ages.
I have designed my novellas. For my novel, I'm still designing the overall concept and mock cover, but will also hire a designer to take it to that next level. I agree it's easier to show rather than explain.
I'm an artist who was looking for how to make book covers b/c I'm trying out a couple different freelancing websites. The technical portion was kinda what I was looking for, but the whole video was interesting to watch. 👍
This was crazy helpful thank you so much!!!!
Your book cover is beautiful, indeed😍
just absolutely superb cover just like you..I am trying to introduce new concepts in my area and your channel is helping me lot.
Thank you for your excellent video; I'm going to try to follow in your footsteps. Would you mind commenting on whether Photoshop Elements is adequate, or do I have to get the full version (with the substantial monthly fee)? Thanks again!
I plan on making my book cover (for a wattpad story) have things related to the story on it or i'm going to make it look like the front of the main characters journal which is probably going to be important to the story.
I was going to say the cover reminded me of Nicola Yoon who is my favorite author
I would have thought you had a million subs! You deserves them!
Thank you very much, this was very helpful!
Thanks Abbie... It helped!
Hi thanks for the video i stumbled across. I have eight different possible covers for my thriller. My question is can each version of the book have a different book cover?
I search it. And i find that this youtuber is also a writer! Good luck for your next book :3
Can we just take a moment to appreciate how awesome Abbies hair looks?
Is there a way to draw a book cover by hand and then send it to someone/ a publisher? Like if I didn’t go the technology route?
This is a cool video. I just came across your cannel and I learnt a lot from this video. Thank you for sharing! 🙆♀️ 💚👏
Thanks for this video!
FABULOUS!! x
this is beautiful thanks for the tips
Came here to learn from previous self-publishers, fell in love...with the book premise. Abbie is alright, I suppose.
Do editing softwares like Photoshop work best on a Mac than a PC?
I'm the same way with my art, I have a hard time letting go of some things and letting others help/do it. I might have to find someone to make my cover for me though
What is a good program to use to design your own cover? I have been surfing through Amazon and I'm so lost.
Stunning cover!
Is bookbrush good for this? My drawing tablet is out of commission at the moment.
Did you use Scrivener to organize your bookshelf?
Could you do a detailed video on formatting, I've pretty much finished my book but I have no idea how to attach my word document to a front cover and blurb and all that. Is there anything other than Vellum to help out with it.
Really great stuff, thanks
yeah i have made a few book covers myself the last time i made one was 23-2-2021 and there are more to come. :) i have plenty of ideas for stories
I have designed my own book cover for my novel Breath Of Love but have taken support from a friend who is good at graphic design
Hey!!! Where do I find images that im aloud to use for my book cover? I don't wanna get in trouble for using the wring pics!
Try looking for pictures on stock photo sites. I use FreeImages.com and istock.com for my book covers.
Quick question about the title. Can the title and the sub title be read or turned to the side? Not read top to bottom though. You turn the title to the side so that you read it by turning the book horizontal I guess.
wow thx for the help!
does anyone know how to get the cover to have glitter printed/painted on the cover
WHICH FONT HAVE U USED FOR THE MAIN TITTLE OF YOUR BOOK PLS TELL ME
Awesome vid, I'm glad I found you. I'm writing my first book and I don't have $500+ for graphics designers, I'd be surprised if I can afford an editor, though that's an expense I can't avoid since I'm not an english major. Thanks for all the informative videos.
Book cover that you only fully under when finishing the book.
Yeah, I have ideas for doing that, as well as book (and maybe chapter) titles. I just love the symbolism that automatically brings. I love ambiguity and multiple meanings.
I want to do something like your cover with my book but i had ever made a book cover before and idk where to start o find the vectors for the cover for free...
Is it just me or doesn’t she kinda look and sound like Billie Eilish
Yeah kinda.
kinda not that much
A star spangled sky. The stars are apart and maintain a distance. When you lift it, the stars commingle and shine.
Dang. I had no idea you designed your own cover! it's beautiful & totally professional looking! PS- You pulled out Wonder & I instantly started tearing up.
that book was so beautifullll it almost made me cry as much as The Fault in Our Stars did *sniffles*
Photopea and Derek Murphy's DIY free cover creator are other sources indie authors can use. I designed my own book cover using a combination of both of these.
Im studying graphic design so im gonna design my own yesh
Hello, nice tutorial...what video editor did you use? Thanks
When copyrighting your book. If it’s fresh it is considered unpublished works?
I'm so jealous of how many books she got I would've asked for more but there are already 3 shelves in my bedroom 😅
I love this video thank you!
nice book cover i love it
yes i love wonder
What app or whatever did you use to design your book cover?
She used photoshop
But you can also use canva
Great video. If you're going to release a paperback and an ebook, design the paperback cover first. Then you can simply crop it to create the e book cover. That said, the best color mode for a ebook cover is RGB. You can always wrangle the covers at the end to make the two color modes. Photoshop can proof to show you where you have illegal CMYK colors-- tones that won't print in the color you expect. That's invaluable as it's impossible to print the wide range of colors you see on a monitor. The body of my first Amazon paperback cover was darker than I expected until i was more diligent with legal CMYK
Can someone please tell me where I can find the book wander
I've ordered your book x
I actually disagree on this one--I don't think just anyone can do a good job making their own book covers without experience/training. I have seen so, so many terrible/ugly book covers for indy books.
When I saw your book cover for the first time, though, I thought, "She can't have made it herself. She probably paid someone else to do it."
But that is so cool that you did it yourself. That gift will come in handy for future books.
I completely agree. I've tried making my own book covers in an online format and I'm TERRIBLE at it. First of all, it takes too long. And the longer I take, the messier and fuller it becomes. And then I'm just not satisfied with it. So I would say that anyone can do amazing book covers IF they are willing to spend a good amount of their days getting comfortable with whatever software they chose to work with, playing around with the software, getting creative, and learn that less is more, but less also can be too less. So yeah... do it only if you have the patience. I tried, and I don't.
im a kid a 12 yr old kid and what application should i use to make a book cover thats the main thing well im gonna publish my book this year (2020) well i know how to publish it but how do we make a cover for the book
Omer Mairaj whats the book name?
Well search repeat telecast on amazon and rate its cover my book cover by me as well
@@foodcorner7746 u can use Canva
I did my own bookcover, but looking back at it, it wasn’t very good😆 I’m better at photoshop now though, luckily
How do I find 'Staazia' or 'StaZa' or however her name's spelt????
thank you you helped alot
Love it
i love to design book covers
I would recommend starting Photoshop file and creating in RGB first, and when finished, convert to CMYK as a separate file. (RGB is smaller file size, Photoshop filters run faster, and RGB has wider color spectrum you can keep for digital displays. Once you convert to CMYK, you'll lose your original colors forever
i just did a girl with an umbrella
*but now i see that it kinda reminds me of the first chapter i wrote-*
What If you want a book for fun? And not publish it? What app do you use?
Would the cover artist, even if they helped and didn’t complete the cover, receive a commission every time the book is purchased?
What program did you use
