omg I am a children's librarian and as soon as I saw this gorgeous cover, I immediately put this book out on one of our displays. Imagine my excitement when I stumbled across your channel and saw this thumbnail!
We saw this on the shelf at the bookstore a few months ago, and not only was I positive it was your illustration, it was so striking, that palette really stands out! Really cool to see the full process
$1500 blew my mind. I worked as a book cover designer in the Philippines for a US publisher (Tate Publishing). We were assigned 11-25 books a month, 2-3 cover options per book, 2-3 revisions. PER MONTH. Guess how much I was paid. A whopping $1 an hour. I also worked with illustrators who worked on completing picture books for roughly $1-3 an hour. Many 3rd world artists are exploited and it took me years to believe my work is worth more than that. Also, the cost of living there is not the same in terms of rent BUT power, water and groceries are close to US midwest prices. I now reside in the US and charge fairly. I just thought it's important that people knew this other reality exists. One good thing that came out of it is that I can work really really fast under pressure. hahaha
wow thank you so much!! I'm starting in illustration and a lot of things you said helped and inspired me even though I'm not a pro. Thanks for sharing, this information has a lot of value
Honest and lucid narration by a established illustrator about making of a book cover. Nuisances in the cover really highlighted. Hijab looks great and so is typo.Well done Anoosha, you are our star.
Again late to the party. But I might be a bit of help about colour profiles. Just remember CMYK is for everything printable and RGB is for everything that will be displayed on a screen (some printers work with RGB but they are few and they usually send you their specifications). So if you print a file and al the colours look wrong, super saturated and not at all what you expected, is probably because you were working in RGB and printed that file. You can change this in photoshop by going to Image- Mode and selecting either CMYK or RGB. I apologise for the graphic design nerding (I don't really like graphic design but I graduated as a GD so I drink and I know stuff)
Hey Anoosha! I've been loving your videos. The one with the stickers was especially great, seeing you figure things out as you went. Also, congrats on the 10k :) Maybe you could do a celebration livestream while you sketch/paint? People could ask questions and have a bit of a conversation going. Talking about your interests, influences, fav artists at the moment, where you get inspiration from, etc.
I can't believe you made the book cover process video, muchas muchas gracias Anoosha! Your tips always save my lost ass, the cover it's so pretty, such an excellent work! Can't wait for your next video 💕
Thank you so much for this video. That book cover was beautiful ❤ I’m a digital artist and sometimes people ask if I do book covers ; tired of telling people no lol. This video was helpful!!
hi anoosha! it’s hard to believe but last week i watched your book cover illustration video, and then the next morning i got a book cover offer from a publisher i kid you not!!! and then the next day you uploaded this video! you are a blessing 😭😭😭😭
Wow a whole a whole month for sketching! Can't wait until I have that luxury. This week I have 2 days for sketching and colour thumbnails, and 2 days for final cover art!🥴 Not complaining though since it's my first children’s book project and a really exciting one! Just extreeeeemely time sensitive..
In my latest book project I was given 5 months! It can totally vary from project to project but definitely as you progress in your career you’ll be able to negotiate for better schedules haha
Thank you for making these videos, they are very helpful and I love you and your style!! 💞 Is there a difference between hardcover books and paperbacks as far as the drawings and files you give to your clients? I would love for you to do a video on that! 💜💖
Thank you! There is a minor difference in the artwork; in a hardcover which has a ‘jacket’, you might need to incorporate a bit more art for the interior flaps and sometimes for a case cover inside. But most of the time it should be the same!
Just discovered that you have a UA-cam channel and it was one of easiest Subscribes I’ve ever done! I’ve loved your work for years and it is so amazing that you’re applying your experience and incredible art as a learning tool for others!

@@AnooshaSyed I remember thinking, "if I ever wrote a book, I would use this cover as an example of what kind of feel I would want for mine." I'm so happy that I've stumbled across your channel! UA-cam algorithm for the win!

I just did my first cover commission for two covers using the same illustration (a royal crest as a separate commission for the author to use for other things as well). I didn't know I would enjoy designing covers so much, despite being a writer myself. I had two weeks notice for a rush job, so I was paid extra by this indie self-pub work and made 800$cdn. I think I might have found my calling beyond writing.
This is a wonderful video 💖 thank you so much 😊 I always wondered about Book cover illustration. I was thinking maybe I want to get into cover illustration so this is right on time.
...And here I am taking $1500 for illustrating entire children's books, I need new clients lol. Aside from that THANK YOU so much for posting these videos, they've been really inspiring and helpful to me. Do you have a Discord group set up, or recommend one for children's art? I don't really know other artists in this field personally and it would be great if there was a place I could ask for critique with this industry in mind, I've done 3 books for self publishers but I'm still trying to figure out a more polished & consistent style to work in. Your work is so beautiful and clean looking!
You are so welcome! Unfortunately I'm not really active on discord haha, I'm still trying to figure the website out lol but I'm sure there must be some groups out there!
Wow. You are so kind and generous Anoosha. I have been following your artwork on Twitter for a while now and I love your artwork and they way you present. I am sure you will reach 10k by the end of 2020. If you really do, could you consider publishing a small, handy book of yours about illustration and/or graphic design? I have enrolled myself in an online learning course of graphic design. I would love to learn from you and also have a piece of your warm artwork. ☺️ More to you Anoosha! ☺️🥳
Anoosha, have you ever scanned or placed an illustration into the middle of an already-created book cover? I'm pretty good at a lot of of cover design; but I'm trying to get a particular illustration within a cover and I'm curious . . . THANK YOU.
