My name is Abbie Emmons I teach writers how to make their stories matter by harnessing the power and psychology of storytelling, transforming their ideas into a masterpiece, and creating a lifestyle that makes their author dreams come true.
Story isn’t about “what happens” - it’s about how what happens affects and transforms the characters. I believe that there is an exact science (a recipe, if you will) behind a perfect story. And if you know what ingredients you need, you can create your own perfect story with ease and confidence. That’s what we talk about every week on this channel - and if it’s something you’re into, be sure to subscribe and join this community!

Try to focus on a main idea and then build on that. U need to able to summarize ur story in a few words or sentences. For example, this story is about a father who overcomes the guilt of his past failures and reaches out to reconnect with his new family. Im not an expert for sure, but the more familiar u are with the characters or a certain theme u want to strongly focus on, the easier it will be to make smaller decisions in the story. Like instead of choosing between many cool ideas for an action scene, u find urself gravitating towards one because of how it symbolizes the character's growth in x y z. Also outlining helps alot, I hope this was useful somehow.

I used to struggle with this too but something that helped me was to focus only on what my character wants and what gets in her way. I also categorize my ideas. I hope this helps!!
Edit : also, one of my favorite tools for notetaking is milanote. It's helped me a lot with organization and has been a lifesaver!

Same! I read advice once that said try not to cram so many different themes/ideas/concepts into one novel/story. That can make things super chaotic. Instead, see if you can spread them amongst different stories, and stick to one/two really strong ideas for one story. Otherwise, it can just be everywhere. I've tried cutting some extra ideas out of my story, but it's still quite fat with all these different concepts XD

You have to study the 3 Act scheme and apply your ideas to that structure like a puzzle. For example, if you have the idea of someone growing wings in a scene, using the 3 Act scheme, youll add that scene to the Fun and Games beat. Because that the beat where we first start to see action after the character has entered the new world.
Another example, if you have the idea of a talking Cat that tap dances you can add that character to the Entering of Act 2 beat. That’s where we meet new characters. So learn the 3 Act scheme until it hurts 😂 and watch movies to see how the writers apply their ideas to the Acts.

    Genre: Encanto
Plot: Wings of Fire: The Dragonet Prophecy
Characters: Keeper of the Lost Cities
Theme: Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard ("So long as there is wonder in the hearts of men, so, too, will there be magic." -Scrivener Behn)
    *Story Smoothie Loading*
A magically protected valley village is filled with mystical joy and merriment, but a devastating world war rages outside of the haven, a fact that not many of its inhabitants like to admit. A family with a bloodline of intense magical abilities exists within the refuge, each person with different abilities. Groups of soldiers in the war secretly hope for a prophecy spoken by one of the people from the magical bloodline to come true (This person has chosen to make himself more known instead of hiding in the protected haven). The prophecy states that a person from the magical family will be born to end the world war that has been destroying lives for so long. Unknown to the people who hope for the prophecy to come true, one who may indeed be the one spoken of resides in the protected haven - a girl in the magical family who can turn products of her imagination into reality at will. One day a person with magical ability living outside of the haven enters the haven, finds the girl, tells her that he thinks the is the prophesied one, and gains her trust. Now having the weight of the fact that she might be able to end the war on her shoulders, the girl must make a difficult decision - stay in a safe place that she'd known for so long? Or use her abilies to try the stop the war - and create things only she can imagine?

This was actually very helpful! I struggle to finish writing books, but at least this cured my writers block. I chose these four books: The plot - The Ascendence Series - The characters - the Traitors Game trilogy - The genre - the Ash Princess trilogy - And the theme - I just chose an overall one that I’ve seen in books that shows working together is better than trying to complete a task alone - this is what I came up with: *A young girl is picked up off of the street by a mysterious man, only to be set into an intricate plan to take the kingdom of Teramika. Little does she know, she has a strong power that could change the course of the kingdom. Suddenly, a bad man who also wants to take control appears, and he has a strong power too. She finds out dark things from her past, and learns that working together is better than trying to work alone. The people she meets along the way help her to overthrow the bad man and take the kingdom back.* Kind of basic, but still, I got over my writers block!

I love human behavior studies too, and I loved your video on how to find the theme for your story. I know you probably won't read this comment, but if you do, keep doing what you're doing! It's great.

I completely agree, when it comes to mixing the elements of inspired stories to create your own...there is truth in this, but to stay true to the integrity of originality, it doesn't happen consciously......
after the story is finished, and later analyzed for a review you will see inspirations or signs of inspired stories by coincidence.

    Genre: Harry Potter
    Plot: The Land of Stories
    Characters: Heartless

The main character is a noble with a love for books. They want nothing more to escape their reality and to avoid the hardships their position holds. Ah! Thank you Abbie so much! What I found helped a lot was seeing you type out those few sentences for the basis of the plot. It helped me with a place to start. I've been watching your videos and coming to understand your overarching ideas for a few months now but struggling to properly use them to build a story. This has kickstarted me though. I've now got a theme/message which I deeply care about - and I haven't had that so much before. I felt like I was trying to force it but now I have one that rings true for me as well as uniting many other nascent plot ideas I've had floating about. That feels really promising. I now also have the beginnings of a plot and characters ( I did already have genre). I don't know if you will see this, but I hope if you do that you understand how grateful I am!

This was my first time watching your channel and it was a lot of fun, definitely subscribing.
The 4 stories that I came up with:
    - Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick (for the genre)
    - the comic book Harlene by Stjepan Šejić (for the plot)
    - Wandavision (for the characters)
    - Captain America: The Winter Soldier (for the theme)
    The concept:
In Portland, Oregon, a couple moves into town. The husband moved them out there so he could work as a psychologist in an asylum. As he works there, he starts the suspect that the warden is involved with some shady business. He also notices that the patients started off as as roudy when the were admitted, but after awhile they become complacent and unresponsive in their sessions. While this is happening, his home life is becoming increasingly stressful. His wife starts to become paranoid and overbearing. He comes to believe that the warden knows more than she’s letting on, on both the patients and his wife.

A way that I used to randomly think of book ideas is when I read something expecting a certain vibe or plot and instead the book turns out to be totally different (cough cough the Twilight Saga) and I wanted my original idea to be a real book so bad so I decided to write it myself. Now I have a storyline with ideas from multiple books, even ones I've never read (Hunger games for that government town-control structure, Twilight for the vibe-the vibe I thought twilight was going to have- and I invented characters based off opinions I have in real life and ways that people have treated me because of them.) now I have a story about a girl who grows up in a society where there are many villages controlled by a form of government called the Council (the council sacrifices villages each year to vampires so that said vampires don't turn on them). The girl ends up befriending a vampire, her sister disapproves, forbidden friendship becomes forbidden love, and the girl discovers that the council is hiding something that could lead to the death of her vampire love interest and the rest of his species, and on top of all that, I impulsively added a murder mystery situation into it all because the plot seemed boring. I have no clue how this is going to play out because I have severe writer's block and can't even start writing it, but hopefully it isn't a catastrophe. the only thing keeping me from scrapping the idea on the spot is the makeshift title I gave it. ty for reading my trillion word long comment!

I don't wanna create a sht story so i am learning. All I remember was an article about Quentin Tarantino where they said he created a movie out of all the movies he had watched when he's still an employee from a record store.
