Deep Clean Your Kitchen Towels: It is ASTOUNDING how dirty they are!

  • Deep cleaning your kitchen towels is a must on the homestead. Excess detergent, fabric softener, and dryer sheets contribute to buildup on towels, not to mention the kitchen stuff! Wiping up spills and inadvertent grease only add to the dinginess. Plus, over time, they are not as absorbent either. Today you'll learn how to fix all that.
Not only do I walk you through the entire process, but I also go more in-depth into why deep cleaning your towels is necessary and how often you should do it. I even talk about specific changes you can make to your laundry habits to reduce the need to strip towels altogether!
Deep cleaning or "stripping" your kitchen towels is a relatively easy process that only requires a couple of ingredients. The ingredients may not be something you have in your home, but they are usually easy to find in the cleaning aisle of your grocery or big box store; Borax (sodium borate) and Washing soda (soda ash or sodium carbonate).
My favorite source for the ingredients:

    Washing Soda: bit.ly/38IV8tJ

In the 50s, we boiled out clothes on the stove top then rinsed in a wringer washer with rain water then hung everything on the clothes line outside. It was an all day long process. But our towels (or clothes) never accumulated a residue. Towels were, however, rougher than sandpaper coming off the clothesline. 🥴

I have a show car that I drive very little but still have to constantly clean it before shows. and am always throwing out microfiber towels because after a few washes they get streaky especially on a solid black car. I’m going to try this!!!

Thank you for this video!! I was about to toss a bunch of towels after trying bleach and various detergents. Now they smell like new! Side note, apparently there's supply chain problems with Borax right now, 6 places were out of stock!

I just spent the better part of a day trying this process on my drab several years old white undershirts. My stockpot would have to do but I had 9 shirts so it took 3 sessions. It really stank up my kitchen and the boil over left my stove top pretty slimy but it’s easy clean up and the smell aired out (I checked and the fumes aren’t caustic). I had to launder the shirts three times before they no longer smelled like that nasty water refuse and no longer felt slimy. I dried and folded them and I’m so pleased to report that they are bright white again. Thank you for this video, Erin!

My mum being a Slovak and my dad being Yugoslav. My mum would boil tea towels once a month. When my parents came to Australia my father being a bricklayer and my mum was first a car detailer in The Ford production factory. Then was a cleaner in middle school. She would use washing detergent ( expensive stuff) man the house smelt on boiling detergent! My dad would come home and boil heaps of rags covered in grease! Literally cleaned better than any washing machine. My mum said : I have to disinfect the towels! I thought my parents were crazy! Lol. I'm glad I found your vids. Subbed and liked because I had to deep clean my heavy duty buffing pads and polishing pads. I've done one set and I'm on my second. First time I have done this and my felt pads were black gunk from stainless steel buffing compound and now white. I had to do 2 treatments. I'm so happy I came across you. I'm 48 and all my life I thought my parents are nuts. I mean who does that? 🤣.cheers from Australia. Btw my buffing pads ate extremely heavy duty.can I do it longer than half an hour? Washing machine does nothing in comparison. Any reply appreciated cheers from Australia. Subbed and liked!🙂👍👍👍👍❤

Did all my white kitchen towels. They were no longer white. Now they are.
Thanks for this simple way to get em really clean. I bet commercial laundries do this same deal with restaurant towels, and napkins.

I do have use any laundry detergents nor fabric softeners. I soak them in a bagful of magnesium pellets watch the gunk come off.
Keeps your washing machine and drain pipe clean as well.
If you can bother to dump the used water in your garden , that will add more minerals to your garden.

Um, is it just me or does this not mean your clothes just aren’t clean? My 2 cents? 1. Always use white vinegar (30% is best) in rinse cycle, for all loads. 2. Never use fabric softener. 3. Borax can be used with each wash of whites. 4. Powder detergent is better for environment, your washer, and your clothes. 5. If your washer has sanitize or extra hot cycle, use it on whites. 6. If your washer has a soak cycle, use it on all loads. (Overnight soaks are optimal if you have the time.) 7. Separate your clothes by color!! 8. If you have clothes with white stripes, use color catcher sheets. 9. Use bluing in white loads (I mix it with my vinegar in rinse cycle). I do these things constantly. My washer had to be repaired about a month ago, and so I basically stripped my clothes by hand wand washing them. I did not have a lot of dirt or build up, which tells me my methods are working.

Absolutely. White vinegar is great for rinsing all residue out of clothes.
I also only use powdered detergent, 1/2 or less of recommended amount, but it's getting much harder to find probably because it's better for life of washing machine.
I use bluing for whites, but caution always use less or your whites can take on a blue tinge.

I have front loader washer with cottons boil/heavy soil wash program. Once week boil face cloth, towels and dish cloths etc, had this routine for years. Front loaders have internal heaters, so wash perfectly, with extra rinse and high speed extract. Some of my white towels are 10 years old and look knew. Never have mould or bad smell in my machine either

When you boil, do you use borax and soda ash as video suggests? If not, what do you use?
Do you boil on stove ?if not, are you saying your washer has a “boil” setting?

I have a front load machine as well. My machine only goes up to 60 degrees and would take hours to do a wash because it's cold water fill. I wash my towels on 40 and they are fine. My bath towels, kitchen towels and dish clothes always look nice and bright. If there is a particular stain I treat it with a little bit of bleach or dish soap first. I dry on a line outside whenever I can but the weather here in the UK is so unpredictable they have to be dried on an airer indoors white often. I finish them off in a tumble drier to soften them and I put in a rag with some conditioner on it. Never have smelly towels. I always leave the machine door open after use and wipe inside the rubber seal, this stops smells accumulating.

I absolutely agree with everything you have said.
Many people just don't understand how powerful these ingredients are.
Especially when they are combined together.
Many people are using the same ingredients in their homemade DIY powdered laundry detergent which they use in every load of laundry.
They absolutely don't understand that they are actually damaging their clothing buy washing their clothes in these types of ingredients each day .
Also I would like to know if anyone has used Pine-Sol with some vinegar to do the same thing.
I heard that those two ingredients are great in washing your laundry.
Also everyone should stop using fabric softener and fabric sheets they have too much toxic chemicals in them which build up in your clothing and damage your washing machine as well as your dryers.
I have absolutely never boiled any of my clothing or my towels.
I have used extremely hot water from my tape two hand wash many of my clothing.
With one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent and some white vinegar with a few drops of pure lavender oil.
I will absolutely try this on my dish towels which need a deep cleaning.
Many times I will just throw them away.
So this will save me a lot of money.
    Thank you

Interesting. Can't say I've encountered this problem with my kitchen cloths. Laundry detergents are different here in the UK. We have so many different brands (Except Tide, which is a banned product)
We have biological detergent, which contains enzymes and brighteners (it also kills bacteria) and non biological detergent, which doesn't contain enzymes. Non bio needs a slightly higher temperature.
I use non bio, as my skin can be sensitive. Thanks for the great video, very informative

      @swallowsnesthomestead4744  3 роки тому +2

We have biological detergents with enzymes as well, but they are quite expensive and I tend to use them sparingly. I mentioned in the video that problems with absorbency and not getting clean can actually be caused by too much detergent... Manufacturers (especially US companies, I'm sure) want you to use as much as they can reasonably recommend so you buy more of their product.

    • @shakeybill82
      @shakeybill82 3 роки тому +2

@@swallowsnesthomestead4744 Absolutely. Using too much detergent will trap dirt in, as the machine will not be able to rinse it all out. I actually use less than the recommended dose. You can get a 25 wash box of powder at ALDI for the equivalent of five dollars.

I wash my towels and linens in hot (90oC) water on long cycles. I have really sensitive skin so only delicate detergents. I don't use fabric softener for towels to avoid buildup :) my mum boils her whites using big big pot, after every wasging, and her linens are even brighter thanks to that :)
