Love your channel, especially the bike upgrade videos! You make it seem like we can all do it, so I decided to try. I have a Pitch as well, and jut did an upgrade to a Judy just like this! I'm now on to upgrading the drive train like your other videos. You should do a video on installing and setting up some budget hydraulic brakes. Thanks!
The internet needs more videos of people like you getting results without the proper tools. Not everyone can afford to purchase specialty tools. Love it!
honestly dude your the first mtb rider whose channel is so humble and like, down on my level. everyones rockin all this fancy shit tryin so hard for clout, and youjust over here screwin two 2x4s to your fence and callin it a day. Shits so cash, keep up the nice work man! I appreciate you, one shed man to another.
Nice to see you showed your mistakes and didn't edit them out, and the fact that went ahead without all the proper tools as most of us don't have all the fancy tools.
When I worked as a mechanic in a bike shop, half of my bread-and-butter was finishing repairs and upgrades for those who attempted to do the work themselves, or to sell them parts to replace the ones they broke or lost. I love the video.
Thank you for a happy family friendly vid. I've had 25 bikes and volunteer bike repair in Rochester, New York. Your doing fine. PVC pipe can set a crown race. Some cartridge bearings don't use them.
I like how you get so much fun on low budget. That's really great! Without having xx1, gold chains, fox forks and other overpriced stuff. Hope you'll enjoy you riding! Cheers from Russia!
Nice job Mark. You didn't forget the star nut, you did it just right. I like your tool, i used a bunch of washers and an old top cap bolt. To put on the crown race people use pvc pipe. I can't remember what i used. Also note, cutting the fork requires the cut to be below the marked line, as the topcap needs to push down directly on the spacers so that the load is on the stem and not on the actual steerer tube (top part of fork). You did it right but didn't mention it so people may have missed that. My install took way longer because i changed the cups and bearings, don't get me started...but i did use a nice home made tool for that. Many file the cut fork, i used steel wool, and a hacksaw using the old stem i replaced to guide the saw lol. I am also paranoid about cutting and filing metal near where i fix my bike because i don't want hidden filings to get into my tires. Putting a fork on and juggling everything is really a pain, which you did easily - I attribute this to your parts tray. I put on a hydraulic brake so I'm glad i didn't have a cable that was inside any fork fittings like you had. I also left the fork a little long so i can juggle the spacers to give me some flexibility on moving the stem/handle bars. I think your fork removal may have been stubborn because the grease was old or there was some rust. My wife's steerer was like that. My silver TK coil fork is cheaper than your nice Judy. It looks great. I went from a fixed fork so any rockshox is a great improvement. And the 2nd fork i had to cut was way more expensive so it was good to cut my teeth on a cheaper fork. Nice job and props for the bike and parts stand! :-)
Just saw the end, the fork looks really really nice on your bike. Nothing like a new fork to make your ride feel great. Tires and wheels are also a nice upgrade that is easy to do.
Dude, this is the content I’ve been looking for. DIY style. Love your “ghetto” repair stand and handy tool tray on the fence lol. Keep up the great work, buddy.
I'm getting ready to do the same upgrade. I slipped my fork down and peeked at the parts. Had some questions after looking. Almost identical to you what you have on your bike. Your video is going to save me some time. Thank you!
Nice video! The brake cable is supposed to be routed on the inside. It may seem like it could go into the spokes that way but it won’t. Inside the fork leg is correct. Also, to install a crown race without the actual tool, don’t use a screwdriver - you could damage the race itself. You had a block of wood there you used for other things - use the edge of that block of wood instead of the screwdriver, but in the same manner. Hammer on the block of wood all around the race evenly until it is set. Wood is softer than metal so it won’t damage it, but is hard enough to be hammered on and transfer the force.
good job, must people don't have all the right tools but you made it entertaining and shown it can be done if you try, without throwing your toys out of the pram,
PVC pipe and a rubber mallet will help next time. Or if you must use your screwdriver wrap it in electrical tape or painters tape so it doesn't scratch (as bad).
I like that you used a pipe cutter for cutting down the fork. Most guys use a hacksaw but the pipe cutter is a cleaner cut. I'm ordering a Rock Shox recon silver this week to put on my Giant Talon and that's a tip I'm taking from this video.
Great down to earth guy. Accessible vids. Sharing your learning as you go. I'm sure bare man can relate i.e. there's a lot more riders in your position vs sponsored or on high end components etc. Stick with it bro and I reckon your channel will have brand support in no time. For my money your one of the best from the similar channels! Stay safe! Enjoy practising the jumping on your ramp 😊
Love the vids man. Just a small tip, your front qr axle is flipped around and the handle should always be pointing up or towards the rear ( up in your case) parallel to the lowers
Dude, great video. U got heart. One suggestion, u need grease in the bottom bearing and top one. Also, didnt see bottom bearing being installed, maybe i just missed it?. A little grease goes a long way. Good riding.
Thanks for doing this video and documenting your install, and congratulations on success! I believe you mentioned needing a pipe to get that one part(I think the crown) on, and I've seen others use a piece of PVC to get those on. Nevertheless, the screwdriver & hammer got 'er done. Enjoy.
You can always make it work with what ya got! Great video, considering this fork for my rockhopper I don’t wanna waste too much upgrading it but it would take forever to justify a full suspension or a nice hardtail.
if the crown race gets stuck before it slides all the way down onto the steerer tube , just cut a slot all the way through the crown race with a hacksaw and it will push on easily , also means you can install / remove without using force - saves bashing it with a hammer and damaging shit - many crown races today come as split rings anyway
You know, awesome edit man. I was looking for exactly this. I wanted to replace a Suntour with a Judy on my average ordinary base priced bike shop bike, in this case a Felt, wand I wanted to know if anyone else out there was making that basic upgrade and how hard it would be. You delivered perfectly ;-) By the way, if you keep a basic brass drift around the shop, you can smack that with a hammer and whatever you steel bit you are driving will dent the drift instead of destroying itself.
you dont always need the proper tool .....just look at mcgyver he used anything close at hand and thats the way i live my life ,go on bro im right there with you good video loved your honesty
I guess, no one would dislike for what you did. Its absolutely great. And its obviously most of us, riders dont have that specific tool for crown race. Haha 😂
No dislike here man thays badass! At least you can accomplish what you want and make it happen. I think i am going to do thos same upgrade to my hardtail.
If you are located in SoCal, then the fork may have been seized in the head tube from salt oxidation in the air and wet rides that allows water/debris into the area. I ride along the coast and had that issues years ago on my road bike. Make sure it is seated properly too as improper seating will also allow for a less occlusive fit which causes this too by letting in water/debris.
Nakaka inspire ka sir lods! Sana maka ipon ako ngayong quarantine ng pambili sa mga parts na kulang sa mbt frame na binigay lang sakin... Hope I had those too 😍 new fan here from PH
that is pinoy ingenuity right there! learning much on ur vids.on works now upgrading my norco storm 2018 hardtail on my own little working space without necessarily going to bike shops saves u time and money when u can hehe keep up the vids while we are in lockdown .luvd ur channel here in Aussie mga erp!

Another Pitch owner as well. Maybe it’s just me, but hard to find info on this bike. Great videos! Thanks!

Finally ! A REAL dude, doing REAL work with what is available ! Thanks a lot man ;) can't wait to get my new fork on !
I really like this series, building budget bikes is how a lot of us got started.
I used some Pvc pipe from Home Depot to create a crown race installation tool. Works great. Cost less than $3.
Size 1.5 inches for the pvc to be exact.. for the tapered.. 1.25 inches for non tapered..

Nice i like your video because you're showing exactly what you're doing, not just skipping and saying this is how it's done.

Just installed my crownrace using a bigger steel pipe over my fork . Hammered it down. Done . Keep up the good work bro! Your vids are awesome…
