Can confirm. I am a 911 dispatcher for major metro area, a very high number of 911 calls are non-emergency, and yes people call about fried chicken mishaps all the time. Please know your local non-emergency phone number ( both numbers usually go to the same place and the same people answer; the 911 phone line uses a different ringtone to indicate it is an emergency and not a non-emergency. This helps us so our resources are allocated accordingly and appropriately and prevents the 911 line from being backed up for those with life or death emergencies) this number can be found by google searching your cities non-emergency phone number.
Also, be prepared for the dispatcher to ask you questions. These questions are not pointless, trivial or for our entertainment - the questions are for the responders that are on their way to your location and to better help them prepare for the situation as well as know who and what is going on and any new developments. If you don’t know the answer to the dispatchers question just say so, we would rather have you tell us you don’t know than to give us false or fabricated information. I promise you the dispatchers questions do not slow down response time for police, fire or medics. The sooner you can answer a question the quicker we can advise responders with that information.
Also please speak clearly and use phonetics when spelling things for the dispatcher. Example: A for Adam, B for Boy, C for Charlie. This goes for numbers as well, instead of just saying 65 say something like “six five” followed by “65” because that can sound like you said 55 instead or the letter A can sound like the letter H, so on and so forth. This helps eliminate the misspelling of a name, address or other important information we may need to know to send you help.
In addition, the most important thing to get you the best help is your location. Some tips for this: familiarize yourself with where you’re going, learn how to know which direction you are traveling, have the address or nearest intersection ready and available because it is “911 WHERE is your emergency?” Not “what is your emergency?” - what the emergency happens to be is usually considered secondary because we cannot send help to you if we don’t know where you are.
Please, please, please do not call 911 for your incorrect food order, parking complaints, lost items or because you locked your keys in your car (unless there is a child or medical emergency to get into the vehicle.) that is what the non-emergency number is for.
If you’ve read this far, thank you for taking the time to read and I hope this information helps you. I would also like to note that MOST dispatchers are NOT law enforcement, we don’t carry a badge or gun, we are civilians just as you are who want to help you and we only have so many tools and resources available to us where good communication goes a long ways. We are yelled at and cussed at and threatened constantly on a daily basis usually under false pretenses so please help us help you for the best chance to resolve your situation.
Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
    Sincerely, your friendly 911 dispatcher.

This could actually be a really GOOD thing if they hire dispatchers that are fluent in ASL and have some interpreter training. VRS calls have delays that might cause a dispatcher to hang up because they don’t realize the call is being interpreted. There should be a non emergency line which redirects calls from 911 as soon as they're deemed non emergencies, to take them away from the real emergency callers, so every time someone calls because of something stupid they can have a nice long chat with the person on the other side of the line without stressing someone out who's currently trying to save lives

They don't really teach non emergency lines, and most people don't seem bothered to look them up. Maybe it would be easier if phones automatically directed you to the correct line from contacts, kinda like how 911 calls automatically get the strongest signal even if a different company gets the majority of local coverage?
I don't know a lot about how that works, but it could save a lot of time if when you go to contacts or use the emergency call feature it went 911, poison control, animal control, etc.

"2 Baker 1, please respond to 123 American Way. The home owner is complaining about a non-plastic package of feces that is aflame on his porch. ... Yyyep, it's the ol' 'Flaming Bag of Poop' trick."

I am so glad I am not a dispatcher.... Huge respect for them. I've had to call a few times, and even with all the training I have, it can be tough.
My most recent call was for a collision with injury, I was rattling details off very quickly, dispatcher had to tell me to slow down. That, with the fact that my phone just isn't very loud, and I was trying to listen to questions while one of the involved cars was honking to get attention.
In this case, I think a video feed would actually have helped. Maybe.
Tough job they have. I have nothing but respect. When an emergency call does come through, they get the help sent out in order to save lives.

I was once dispatched to a call for an elderly man that had fallen.
We arrive and an elderly man with had indeed fallen.... into a cat litter pan, in the tub, wearing only briefs and socks. He had dementia and for the life of me i will never forget it, because of how weird it was. He had dementia, his wife made the call. She just needed help getting him back to the bed and we were happy to help.

I spent 14 years as an emergency dispatcher, cant say Im upset that video 911 wasnt around when I worked thats for sure. Funny he mentioned a hot mic. I was training a new dispatcher on night shift one night when an armed robbery came in at a gas station in our county, We sent units and they arrived on scene as the suspect was exiting the store with a shotgun. The units ending up in a foot pursuit with the armed suspect so I took over the radio as this was only that dispatchers 3rd or 4th shift on a law enforcement radio. While I was calling the pursuit he was screaming in the background "shoot his @ss". Needless to say it was his last shift as a 911 dispatcher haha

I worked for a medical devices company. We were NOT clinicians, we had no medical training and we never stated we did.
We would usually deliver the equipment to doctors, nurses, etc and train them how to use the equipment (not how to install it, that was their job)… but we had units that went to patients specifically.
You wouldn’t believe how many people assume if you’re delivering their equipment, you MUST be a doctor.
    ‘Does this look right?!’
‘Ummm. My mom says everyone is beautiful in their own way? Maybe not that though, what the hell is that?!?’
