@@DRHODES1979 I use 100% IOSSO nylon brushes only. They're amazing and last a long time with good scrubbing. Nothing wrong with bronze, I just don't like them as much.
Wow! A real eye opener! And it didn’t look like you were working very hard. Most of my shooting and cleaning days are past (82 yrs will do that to you, and I used to spend hours cleaning with results less satisfactory results. Plus the stuff doesn’t stink! Thanks for this segment.
I've been using ThorroClean for about 6 months, and it works amazingly well. I use the iosso nylon bush in lieu of brass. The only other thing I do differently is after patching out the bore cleaner, I run a few patches with 99% alcohol. This is one of the tips Erik Cortina gave on his video. I also run a patch with oil through the barrel if I'm not going to use the firearm for a few months. Thanks you for the informative video and discount tip.
My go-to for winter storage is a patch of CLP as a final step before going into the safe for a few months. I also store with the bolt "out" in case any fluid gravity-leaches into the chamber.
I've used it for carbon rings. One thing to note is that since it removes absolutely everything you will experience low velocity that climbs upward when you shoot for maybe 10 rounds.
You’ll have an initial speed up and then 50-100 rounds later, atleast for 6 Dasher you’ll speed up another 30 to 40 fps due to the fire cracking getting rough again
@ccfdmd yeah it has absolutely 0% odor. Nothing harmful whatsoever. It's the best on the market for a few reasons in my opinion. #1 it works so well. #2 no odor. So worth every penny.
Thorro clean is awesome. I have great barrel life and precision in my rifles by using it and using JB bore paste. I believe the abrasive paste is key to barrel precision and life because it smooths the sharp edges from fire cracking. Great content, thanks!!
Yup I used thorro clean two stage bore cleaner when I did load development for the CX bullets. After seeing and reading articles on taking your barrel down to bare metal when you switch to copper bullets and after watching F-class John's video on the product. Definitely works as advertised. Ordered mine through bullet central. Very reasonably priced, even up here in Canada.
I’ve found very similar results as what you showed using this product. Only thing I would add is I believe they recommend using a nylon brush instead of a brass. Might extend life of your brush.
For me is the best cleaner at the moment out there. I have use KG, Boretech, Sharp shoot and nothing compares and gives the resoluta of Thorro Clean. I do a wet patch after brush it.
Glad to see you using this product. Both f class john and bolt action reloading did vids also. I personally have gone through 2 bottles each of thorro clean and flush; Its a great product. For guys who prefer nylon brushes you can actually use a nylon brush and even short stroke the throat and first few inches of the barrel both with the brush and then with a patch on a jag. This really works well. Your barrel was pretty clean in the video, but would be a lot cleaner if you repeated the process 1 more time. Generally i like to do each process 2 to 3 times, similarly like you did but with an iosso or heavy duty brownells nylon brush. When using abrasives like jb paste, tcs paste, iosso paste, thorro clean, witches brew, etc., a nylon brush is recommended over a bronze and i like to short stroke a patch over a tcs rubber o-ring jag or a bore tech jag too. I always use bronze brushes with non abrasive cleaners like boretech, wipeout, kg, shooters choice, hoppes etc or it takes too long to clean the barrel. Always finish with a nylon brush as the bronze brushes give a false positive for copper fouling. I recommend using the thorro flush on a few patches after cleaning or i often use something like boretech eliminator or bore tech carbon cleaner to get all of the abrasive cleaner out. You should use a chamber rod with a 1 or 2 sized larger nylon or bronze brush and short stroke it in the chamber to remove the carbon ring, similar to your process. Make sure to swab the chamber dry with like a 416 caliber nylon brush and a 3 inch patch over it. Then clean the brake with a gun scrubber or a brake cleaner type spray and then use q-tips to dry it. Run 2 more dry patches down the barrel after cleaning the throat and muzzle brake to remove cleaner which was pushed into the rifling. Thanks for sharing the video. It was quick and dirty. Your technique was maybe a bit sloppy but you are using a legit product and its important to keep a barrel in good condition. Your barrel was heavily fouled and in need of a good cleaning. Glad to see you using the borescope. I have an older lyman and a teslon. Its a critical tool for understanding barrel conditions as some barrel really can get bad carbon rings in the barrel channel just before the rifling. These can be hard to see and remove without the borescope. The traditional carbon ring, which forms in front of the case mouth in the chamber is easier to remove, like how you showed in the video.
I recently got a pair of Thorro clean. Actually ital F-Class John’s video that got me buying it 😅 man does this work. So far Thorro Clean is second to none 👍🏻👍🏻 happy holidays from Denmark 🇩🇰🎄
I really have to stop watching these videos. Every time I do I'm buying more stuff. I think this is going to be something that has been needed for a long time though.
I too have used these products with great success. But it took forever to clean my 6.5 CR. It had about 1750 rounds through it, and even though I tried other carbon cleaners, it was a nightmare. I used nylon brushes and patches. 50 times, 20 strokes each patch, 10 to 15 patches per time! But total success in the end. Great products!
Amazing product, great video! I don't have a bore scope, but I love the Thorro-siblings! One tip/wish, maybe add a visual representation image in image to help us non-borescope-users to see where you are looking. Like just something simple like a barrel cut through drawing and an arrow pointing where the scope is looking at that moment?
I've used it for a few years now mostly with the Iosso brush. Saw a video from Brian Litz using JB paste and tried it with Thorro Clean and have not gone back to the brushes since. Patches work more consistent and get thrown away
Alternating a couple of cleaning sequences with a nylon brush and then a jag/patch like brian did is the ticket. Short stroke the first few inches with each session as the muzzle end is never fouled like the start of the barrel.
I have used TC for some time now. I always use Flush before and after cleaning. Then I use Break Clean in the chamber and pull a patch through the barrel.
Have had similar results in iosso paste which is pretty much what thorro clean is with the addition of another solvent. 1st choice cleaner, for instance, has no smell either as it is a water based solvent. You can just get a small bottle of your favorite solvent and add a tube of iosso until the consistency is right - might look and act just like thorro clean... and your favorite solvent acts just like thorro flush. Abrasives get carbon out - nothing else will really do the job. Nylon brush and iosso or jb short stroking the throat will do the trick.
Maybe first use a patch of thorro flush after the thorro clean. Then dry patches. Finish with a patch wet with alcohol and optionally final with iosso oil patch if storing for awhile or very light ballistol
Been using thorroclean as my stand alone cleaner since it came out...my only go to! Get some iosso nylon brushes instead one bore size above bore being cleaned.
Excellent video as usual, now i have an alternative to the Sweets i have been using for years but Gavin gets beat up a little for not having scopes caps on when cleaning.
@5:00, you should remove the jag after it exits the muzzle end. I can hear it colliding with the crown as you pull it back through and this has damaged many rifle crowns in the past.
Will give it a shot. Honestly? I use a brush and clp for the first few passes, then? Baby wipes, of all things. Takes carbon off like it isn't even there.
I get better results with Bore Tech Eliminator. Removes carbon better. I found that the thorro clean polishes over the carbon and just makes it LOOK clean. Removes most of it though. I remove my muzzle brake every time I clean. When i clean the front of the muzzle with a patch, the Eliminator removes the stuff way faster.
First thing I run down my bore is a patch soaked in kroil , let soak for 15 minutes. I patch that out then use thorroclean. PRS rifle ran hard for 300 rounds gets pretty bad.
Anyone tried Eric Cortina's method using CLR, on stainless barrels only? The stuff is cheap and seems to work well but I don't have a bore scope to confirm its effectiveness.
I’ve tried it. It does seem to remove carbon well, but I’m careful to get it well wiped out with alcohol, dried, maybe oil and dried. Personally there are products I like better for bores, though I will use CLR for really carboned up muzzle brakes.
@@thebryguy96 Yeah. Although as I mentioned I’ve tried CLR, for me something like Patch Out/Wipe Out just works better for bores. I pretty much only use CLR on deeply carbon covered muzzle brakes, or to get fire rings off a stainless revolver.
Good results…..but you didn’t tell us much about the product. Is it abrasive? Does it contain ammonia? Do you need to follow-up with another product to stop any kind of reaction? An ultra-clean bore is nice for benchrest or F-class, but I don’t like the lengthy process to build the copper back up to stabilize my velocity and zero. I’ll clean more frequently with a non-abrasive cleaner and only use an abrasive cleaner when absolutely necessary.
Discount code worked ... thanks! Just got some and will see how it works. The demo was impressive, but we shall see. One observation is that you're using really small patches that provide very little resistance when pushing the patch through. I wonder if it'll work even better with slightly larger patches that provide just a little more resistance.
I’ve seen recommendations to avoid using a bronze bore brush from the F class guys to prevent bore damage. Your thoughts on bronze vs nylon would be appreciated.
A bronze brush won't damage your bore unless you had a really strong abrasive on it. Generally with abrasive cleaners, I prefer nylon brush and then alternate cleaning sequences with a tight patch/jag.
This looks like an impressive product combination. I’ve ordered some from BulletCentral using the discount code. What are your thoughts on adding a light gun oil to the freshly cleaned bore before storing the rifle?
If you live where there is any humidity you would be wise to put a protective layer of oil or preservative in your barrel. Most things like WipeOut, Eliminator, Ballistol etcetera have a protective layer to them. My guess is the Thorough Flush does too.
C4 copper remover and c4 carbon remover works just as good. I do not like abrasives neither do top barrel manufacturers. You can lap the barrel to shiny and it will catch copper like crazy!! Just saying

Here is the ONLY test you need to run. Wet the inside of the bore and place a borescope camera inside and record what is happening for about an hour or two. Then play it back at 10x and watch the recording. IF you DON'T see the carbon and copper melt and disappear right before your eyes then it is a fail. Any other test is just BS! @zachboor7541 Awesome. I spilled a bottle of Hoppes on the basement floor once, thought we were going to have to move out for the cleanup, and Hoppes is mild compared to many others.
Same effect can be achieved by CLR followed by a patch or nylon brush with Iooso. Both Iosso and Thorro second part are abrasives. Don't fall for an expensive solution. Using bronze brush with abrasives is one sure way of destroying your barrel by scraping lands edges, bad practice, don't do it. Use a stiff nylon brush instead. Track down an interview between Cortina and barrel maker Frank Green for more education on the subject.
You are using way too much thoroughclean. You're also supposed to use the thoroughflush both before and after the thoroughclean. You definitely want to remove your muzzle brake or at least make sure you get all the cleaner out of the crown and ports.
Do you listen to that annoying background music when you are out working in your shop???? No? Then why do make me listen to it when I'm trying to watch your video? An unbelievable youtube sickness that is a cancer content creators are spreading to their audience. Make it Stop.

Using bronze brush with abrasives is one sure way of destroying your barrel by scraping lands edges, bad practice, don't do it. Use a stiff nylon brush instead. Track down an interview between Cortina and barrel maker Frank Green for more education on the subject.
I use Iosso brushes and take my brakes off before cleaning, otherwise the ports are full of crud
Hoppes and CLP work just fine too.
You al over do.... Yust kep it rust fre...
Amazing English.
I'm sticking to brake clean
Damn
Kash
You are using way too much thoroughclean. You're also supposed to use the thoroughflush both before and after the thoroughclean. You definitely want to remove your muzzle brake or at least make sure you get all the cleaner out of the crown and ports.
I’m a little surprised at the running a brush in and out of the barrel like what was shown. One sure way to damage your crown.
The muzzle brake keeps the brush and rod centered, so it's typically not rubbing the crown like on a non braked barrel
Uhh this video is about 4 years late
Do you listen to that annoying background music when you are out working in your shop???? No? Then why do make me listen to it when I'm trying to watch your video? An unbelievable youtube sickness that is a cancer content creators are spreading to their audience. Make it Stop.
Chill out buddy!😉
Detest music in theoretically informational videos.
Question; why not an inconnel sleeve in the area most prone to firecracking ?
How about comparing it to other cleaners and not just doing sponsorship simping for once? Project Farm style.
Gavin decided to sell his soul to his sponsors and will never ever feature any review nor feature any products he doesnt get paid from. There is a reason why for example Gavin never says "i put the barrel in my lathe" but will rather say "I put the barrel blank from Bergara (TM) into my Precision Matthews GT440 Lathe (tm)" Because he is a shill.
The whole channel ONLY features products he gets paid to feature, and he will never ever have anything bad to say about any product whatsoever.
WOW super stripper!
This guy reminds me of a used car salesman
Gavin? Pretty much, he will never feature products that doesnt pay him, see the disclosure for example: Ultimate Reloader LLC / gavintoobe Material Connection Notice:

I hope you cleaned all the crud out of the muzzle brake 🤔🤔 ?
Most guntubers are like that now
