It's crazy the season after he died the cubs made it to the playoffs for the first time since 1989, great fun that 1998 season Kerry wood, Marc grace, Sosa 62 hrs
It was the joy that brought us all back again and again. You nailed it. His banter was wonderful. WGN for me as a child was playing in the background of my house.
Two things that Harry Caray said came true in 2016. "Sure as God made green apples, some day, the Chicago Cubs are going to be in a World Series." And, at the end of this interview, he said, "Somewhere along the line, somebody will remember me and say, 'Gee, the Cubs just won the world championship. Boy, isn't it a shame Harry's not here to see it." Growing up with him on TV and radio, I definitely thought of Harry on those occasions in 2016
I would get home from school every weekday by the 4th to the 6th inning. Spark a bowl, hang out with friends listening to this man and watching the Cubbies. What a great time to be young.
I met Harry a couple of times, once at his restaurant and once at the ballpark. Had great seats on third base side. I see Harry coming towards me and I say "Hey Harry, how's it going?" I was talking to another guy and Harry stopped and talked to us for a bit. Guy said do you know him? I said no, but I figured he is at the bar so much he might think he does! Great memory.
*He made baseball special. Nobody called a game like him. We used to laugh at how he "multitasked." Harry Caray: "I'd like to give a shout out to Joe and Annie McDonald, who...OH, THAT BALL WAS HIT RIGHT DOWN THE LINE! ...are celebrating their 40th anniversary."* 😂😂😂 *Miss you Harry, always!* ⚾️
As a boy the highlight of every day during the baseball season was listening to Harry while I was supposed to be sleeping. I think it was my first experience with loss when he had to leave St. Louis. I thank him for the joy baseball continues to bring my life
I happen to have not watched a baseball game since Harry died. As a kid, I started as a Sox fan. When Harry moved to the Cubs, I became a Cubs fan. Turns out I was a Harry fan. He was hilarious.
21:20 I teared up when he mentioned the Cubs winning the World Series and him not being around. November 2, 2016: Cubs win!! Cubs win!! Cubs win the World Series!! Holy Cow!!
I felt the same way. It stung. My dad died many years ago and my grandpa had dementia when the Cubs won the world series so neither one of those men were able to celebrate the World Series win, even though without them I never would have been a Cubs fan. Harry Caray, Ron Santo, Ernie Banks, and so many others never got to see it happen. We who got to see it are truly blessed and should never take it for granted.
I would legitimately watch Cubs games when they were getting their asses kicked just so I could listen to Harry Carey broadcast a game. I never knew when he might say something that would have me on the floor rolling, but I expected it at some point.
You know for me growing up in STL, it was the transistor radio at a low volume under the pillow, in case my dad walked in to say goodnight. .. with my finger on the volume dial, to lower it even further when he did. Listening to Harry and Jack Buck... the greatest TEAM ever, especially when the Cards were on the west coast and the games went late, was a special memory I still carry today. Always tired the next day, but who cared? That started in 1967, at age 9. Life comes full circle. Now I fall asleep listening with my smart phone under there, the same size as the old transistor.... tuned to the Cards broadcast on the MLB app. Only my dad doesn't walk in anymore. :( Thanks Harry. Thanks Jack. What you two taught me about the greatest game ever stays with me to this day.
Being a resident of California and watching Cubs' games on WGN for years, back in February of 1998, while planning a trip to Chicago later in the year, I bought a ticket for a Cubs' game versus the Arizona Diamondbacks at Wrigley Field (for June 30, 1998). Then Harry died two weeks later after I bought my ticket. I miss all the old-time announcers, including Harry Caray. Jack Brickhouse did the 7th inning stretch at the game I went to. Sammy Sosa would end up hitting 20 home runs in the month of June 1998, and at the game I went to, he hit the 20th home run. LIttle did I know then what made it possible for him to hit those home runs.
I watched this a few times, just love it. Two of my favorite baseball people of all time. As a kid in Iowa in the ‘60s I tolerated very scratchy radio to hear Harry from St Louis, then moved to western Michigan in 1977 and was a regular with Harry at Comiskey for the next few years. Deeply loved him from the ‘60s to the end of his career. I only paid attention to the Cubs later because of him. Thanks Bob for your usual perfect interviews.
Thanks for the video. People forget what a long career he had and his intelligence. Going in every day and getting enthusiastic on the air is not as easy as u think. R.I.P Harry. I will see u soon and we will share a beer. Lol. And I will let u buy the first round.
I listened to every St. Louis Cardinals game in the seasons of '67 & '68. Harry Caray and Jack Buck were wonderful, never to be topped by any other broadcast team in my book. I've heard many, many others over the years.
I hope someday, somebody can upload the full "When Harry Met Baseball" from which these interviews were taken. Aired on WGN in the summer of 1994, I think during the All-Star Break.
Both Harry & Skip are legends in broadcasting as far as I'm concerned. Chip isn't bad, although he has a long way to go to match his grandfather & father. Thanks, Harry Caray & Skip Caray for providing us with so many memories through the years!!! You are now calling great games in The Great Beyond!!! R.I.P., Gentlemen. ;'(
I grew up a Cardinal fan with Harry. IMO he was the best ever. He bled red, made the games fun and you learned baseball from him. It broke my heart when he left St. Louis.
Loved Harry! Big part of my life as a kid and a baseball fan...sure miss those days..so carefree compared to nowadays. Holly Cow where did the years go?
Reds fan as a kid I loved watching any game, Harry Carey was a huge part of my childhood watching Cubs games on the Superstation when the Reds weren’t on tv.
great announcer, he called the game like you watch it... and thank you to the great bill veeck for all his innovations including harry's signature "take me out to the ball game."
What a wonderful man and announcer. He really understood that the average fan just wanted to be let in, and there was no announcer better at letting in the fan, all of us, in on the great game of baseball.
Mike Bliesener I know what you mean. I caught the very last tail end of that era in the early to mid 1980's. We'd gather a few of us for a baseball game and next thing you knew, we had other neighbors coming in wanting to take a swing at the ball. I remember it like yesterday. It still tells me....what could be someday when peoples eyes are opened to real, heartfelt fun like that. I also simutaneously was blessed enough to grow up with Haray Caray, catch Jack Buck on a screeching radio late at night in Kansas City four hours away from St. Louis, and of course growing up, listening to Denny Mathews. I feel so lucky to catch the end of one of the greatest generations ever.
If I recall, this was broadcast right after Ryno retired and when everyone knew a strike was coming. For me, it was like watching someone slowly die right before my very eyes and there was nothing I could do about it. Baseball was on life-support that year and the next 3 years. It finally died with Harry and the Brick.
The Chicago Cubs did win the World Series, and could you only imagine what his call could have been like if he would have been there to seen it all happen?
The Questions produced by the news guy are training they receive to bring out the true feelings and perspectives of a individual, but also hopefully they will get something to leave the listening public that will keep them tuning in to your employers goals.Good, bad, interesting and humorous
I actually did say when the Cubs won the world series in 2016 it would have been awesome to hear Harry caray say the Cubs won the world series. I did say now he can rest in peace.
The two greatest lovers of baseball, in terms of broadcasters, are on this video. Costas could've done the same as Harry, if he so chose. But he went and stayed national. I don't know if it was after this special was made, that Harry invited Bob Costas to eat at his restaurant, or another time they got together. But that evening, at like 4am, Bob asked Harry:. What's it all about Harry? Harry's response? Booze, broads, baseball and bullshit, Bob! What a life this man enjoyed.
I can remember the first time I heard Harry call a game. This was a day game of course because it was before they added lights to Wriggly. Harry must have been drinking because I could not believe how badly he was speaking. I asked my friend if he was mentally challenged it was that bad. Then he explained that’s Harry, on a hot day he’d drink a bit too much Bud and he started slurring. Later I became used to it and appreciated his history in the game.
I will never forget Harry. He's the only reason I'm still a Cub Fan. Today's Cub Team is still taking advantage of who Harry Caray was. Attendance is dropping at home games at horrendous pace. This time there's not another Harry Caray type franchise savior.
Back when all sports were fun. And little bobby costas didn't spout his politics. Half of The USA doesn't agree with little bobby. And probably more agree that, "I paid a boatload of money, I just want to watch the game." Doesn't matter which sport. Tennis, wrestling, hockey, football, the olympics, etc........
We won't see or hear a Man, yes, a Real Man, like this in sports broadcasting ever again. I'm not a baseball fan, since the 80's. Way too corporate and safe now. No Thank you.
This is when it was fun to watch the Cubs even when they were terrible. Len Kasper is the most boring, mundane announcer ever. I miss Harry's excitement. Kasper is unbearable to listen to! I wish they would fire him, and replace him with someone who actually cares if the Cubs win and is not there just to collect a paycheck.
Chicago Cubs i need you help i am Daniel Franco Jr Bill Madlock gave me my trophie and a ball with his autograph and i never had sex since Juanita Alcantar Talavera took off with my Daughters
Costas is the antithesis of Caray ..i.e., a misanthropic, know-it-all, elitist, who reserves a particular degree of contempt for the "average Joe"/"fan"
One of the best parts of my childhood was watching the shitty 90s Cubs with Grandma on WGN via antenna. Thanks Harry!
It's crazy the season after he died the cubs made it to the playoffs for the first time since 1989, great fun that 1998 season Kerry wood, Marc grace, Sosa 62 hrs
For many fans of baseball, it's the announcer who brings them the game. Harry Caray not only brought the game; he brought great joy to the game.
It was the joy that brought us all back again and again. You nailed it. His banter was wonderful. WGN for me as a child was playing in the background of my house.
Two things that Harry Caray said came true in 2016. "Sure as God made green apples, some day, the Chicago Cubs are going to be in a World Series." He's just delightful. I got goosebumps at the end when he's singing the stretch. Hope the Budweiser is still frosty cold for ya Harry. R.I.P.
I would get home from school every weekday by the 4th to the 6th inning. Spark a bowl, hang out with friends listening to this man and watching the Cubbies. What a great time to be young.
Degenerate

Lost Art of having to deal with people.

Some of my Favorite childhood memories was watching and listening to the Great Harry Caray.
me too. He and Jack Buck doing the Cardinals games.
I miss this guy. I remember watching many a Cub game on WGN with my grandfather back in the 80s during my school summer break.
As a boy the highlight of every day during the baseball season was listening to Harry while I was supposed to be sleeping. I think it was my first experience with loss when he had to leave St. Louis. I thank him for the joy baseball continues to bring my life

Wow! People getting along ! What a concept! My my how things have changed!
21:20 I teared up when he mentioned the Cubs winning the World Series and him not being around.
November 2, 2016: Cubs win!! Cubs win!! Cubs win the World Series!! Holy Cow!!
Harrys real love was the Cardinals, not the Cubs.
@@brianwilliams5662 even if that was the case, don't be that asshole. Harry Caray was as much a Cub in the end as any player to call Wrigley home
@@brianwilliams5662 so was Andre Dawson a Cub or an Expo?
I felt the same way. It stung. We all do. Cubs win! Thank you for the memories.
- A Cardinals fan
This guy was the best.
mowm88 I agree.
My childhood idol. I grew up in Chicago as a White Sox fan. Harry will always be remembered by me over any player of those years.
I would legitimately watch Cubs games when they were getting their asses kicked just so I could listen to Harry Carey broadcast a game. I never knew when he might say something that would have me on the floor rolling, but I expected it at some point.

"I go to bars because, who do you see there? Baseball Fans!"
I miss Harry. Just imagine his reaction to to the world series if he were here.
"I go to bars to drink." "I like to drink.." Nothing wrong with being honest Harry....RIP.
Thankyou for posting!
The 50th Anniversary special on channel 9 I got the complete show with commercials
7-24-94. 2 hours. 50 years in broadcasting. A Legend!
This is a wonderful interview. Thanks
Thanks for the video. This brought tears of joy to my eyes. Miss ya Harry 🥰
I was never a Cub fan but I loved Harry Carry - and still do -
This man sent a lot of joy to a 90s teenager during the Summers on WGN. I miss you Harry. You're a legend and will live on forever.
Miss you all the time Harry not a cubs fan but you always made games more enjoyable to watch
I'm from NYC but what I've seen of Harry Carey is to admire & love him 👍👍
21:29 Made me tear up.
The mayor of Rush Street. Hearing his voice takes me back to when I loved baseball.
I listened to every St. Louis Cardinals game in the seasons of '67 & '68. Harry Caray and Jack Buck were wonderful, never to be topped by any other broadcast team in my book. I've heard many, many others over the years.
I cracked up when he said the player never drops a ball then he drops it...well holy cow look at that
I hope someday, somebody can upload the full "When Harry Met Baseball" from which these interviews were taken. Aired on WGN in the summer of 1994, I think during the All-Star Break.
This special was in 1994 after Harry turned 80.
hearing Harry or Skip Caray calling baseball reminds of my great grandfather in Columbus GA which made my summers visiting my grandparents
Both Harry & Skip are legends in broadcasting as far as I'm concerned. Chip isn't bad, although he has a long way to go to match his grandfather & father. 14:45 do re mi fa so....do. I love Harry Carey
From a WGN special "When Harry met Baseball". I had this on VHS once...lol RIP Harry...
Reds fan as a kid I loved watching any game, Harry Carey was a huge part of my childhood watching Cubs games on the Superstation when the Reds weren’t on tv.
Just the sound of his voice takes me back to my childhood in Chicago..
There's a pop up to short, Bowa under it. Ahhuuu! He dropped thaaa baaall!!!
LOL at 00:45. I do remember "When Harry Met Baseball." Had it on VHS, and hope I still do.
The best on all levels.
great announcer, he called the game like you watch it... and thank you to the great bill veeck for all his innovations including harry's signature "take me out to the ball game."
And be sure no one will thumbs down this video!
What a wonderful man and announcer. He really understood that the average fan just wanted to be let in, and there was no announcer better at letting in the fan, all of us, in on the great game of baseball.
You said it about the way neighbors and neighborhoods used to be Harry.
Mike Bliesener I know what you mean. I caught the very last tail end of that era in the early to mid 1980's. Ohhhhh Harry,,,,how we ll remember …is too many to count. Your voice, character is unmatched. You ARE Chicago Cubs….truely baseballs ambassador!
Father of the modern call. Listen to his calls in the 50s and they could be 2019
He sounds exactly like Dave Neihaus. Dave listened to Harry when he was a kid.
The Chicago Cubs did win the World Series, and could you only imagine what his call could have been like if he would have been there to seen it all happen?

kinda heard about H. Caray, but watching this vid i now see the connection to the sports announcer in Naked Gun.
A bit of sanity and nostalgia goes a long, happy way in a world gone mad.
We remember Harry, we remember
What a great man
I actually did say when the Cubs won the world series in 2016 it would have been awesome to hear Harry caray say the Cubs won the world series. I did say now he can rest in peace.
HEY!!! HARAY CARAY HERE..... Here comes sandberg around 3rd safely into second! "What?!"
The two greatest lovers of baseball, in terms of broadcasters, are on this video. Costas could've done the same as Harry, if he so chose. But he went and stayed national.

Harry was right about the kids of his time playing out side.
cool🍎🍋🥑🍅🍒🍓🥕
He's a Cub fan, and a Bud man!
As a Brewers fan, I may not be a Cub person myself but I can't hate on Harry.
That's why my friends call me whiskers.
Image if Harry Caray was alive during Sammy Sosa Home Run Season of 1998
I can remember the first time I heard Harry call a game. This was a day game of course because it was before they added lights to Wriggly. Even though I'm a white sox fan, I think that the cubs will win the pennant sometime within 20 years from years from now
Lol. U were very close
As much as I loved Skip, Harry was the greatest!
Harry, Jimmy, and Falstaff. Need I say more?
Carat reminds me of Rodney Dangerfield. I wonder if they ever met or if their backgrounds are similar.
Nice bit of self-awareness at 4:41.
And he could not have been more right.
A Great American!
This was done right before the strike in '94, right?
How tough is it to be decent to people. Harry pulled it off.
21:31-21:37 Forecasted 2016
Hey!
38 in Chicago, seems about right.
It doesn't surprise that most announcers steal there material from the other. The Yankees guy really helped himself to a bunch of stuff.
Just a regular guy. A real guy.
I will never forget Harry. He's the only reason I'm still a Cub Fan. Today's Cub Team is still taking advantage of who Harry Caray was. Attendance is dropping at home games at horrendous pace. This time there's not another Harry Caray type franchise savior.
Greetings to Cookie Campbell
Harry was right the Cubs team won a World Series too bad harry Carey wasn’t there to see it
wow.. Costas before he was wearing a (hideous!) toupee!
Back when all sports were fun. And little bobby costas didn't spout his politics. Half of The USA doesn't agree with little bobby. 15:15 Harry Caray or no Harry Caray, If he he made a crack like that today he'd be shit-canned Unfortunately.
Wow. The fans. What do the fans think. How original.
We won't see or hear a Man, yes, a Real Man, like this in sports broadcasting ever again. I'm not a baseball fan, since the 80's. Way too corporate and safe now. No Thank you.
Wow Will Ferrell's make-up is really good in this impression.
Budweiser beer is actually disgusting. Maybe it was okay back then. Maybe.
Chicago Cubs i need you help i am Daniel Franco Jr Bill Madlock gave me my trophie and a ball with his autograph and i never had sex since Juanita Alcantar Talavera took off with my Daughters
U are skrewed
Mlb has forgotten the fan. Salaries too high, tickets too high for fans. An average fan can't afford season tickets and it's not by a small margin
Will Farrell does a better job at being Harry Caray
Costas is the antithesis of Caray ..i.e., a misanthropic, know-it-all, elitist, who reserves a particular degree of contempt for the "average Joe"/"fan"
