  • Mary and guest Heather Kinion demonstrate the "quilt-as-you-go" method of quilting. This old quilting method is a great way to clear out your scrap batting and fabrics and it remedies the problem of quilting a large quilt on a home machine.

    I have made QAYG since the 1980's and some of the early ones I would make a row of blocks and quilt then add all the rows together. I have a frame that isn't large enough for a king. So I make a queen and quilt it. Then make 2 sides with whatever border and piecing that works. I quilt those and add to the queen center QAYG fashion. It is a great way to quilt! Endless possibilities. I saw a magazine article with method you showed in the 1970's

    First saw this technique on the show on PBS with Kaye Woods! It was similar. It makes a wonderful charity project too.

    Also could use fusible batting. Good tute! Also: you CAN press the seams open if you use a Teflon pressing sheet or just a good pressing cloth to place over the synthetic batting. Cotton batting you could press without worry.

    Not really enough information here. This part has been around a long time. THE REAL Challenge is joining up blocks or quilted units without extra bulk.

    I thought you said to put the strips from one end of the batting to the other end. The strip didn't look long as the batting (top to bottom). Did I misunderstand?? Thx

    On placing your first two pieces together, you are saying to place WRONG sides together. That is incorrect and that is not what you demonstrated either. Should be RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER.

      that's what i heard too, but then it didn't look to me like heather had much of a chance to show how to quilt as you go........ so she probably didn't notice the error....
      the other one, just kept talking and talking and talking over top of anything heather said...... so its no wonder...

    As she said, the idea behind THIS particular method is to make a baby quilt, width of fabric (42"). The size was cut down as an example.

      +Melissa Manandise You might also want to check out Quilt As You Go #1 - The Basic Technique. Wendi Gratz uses a completely different method, but it's an oh-so-easy way to quilt blocks when making a large quilt on a domestic/home sewing machine. It might be what Mary is referring to when she talked about the Potholder Method.

    • @nonniepalmer8676
      @nonniepalmer8676 6 років тому

      As always for every quilter there is a different way of doing the same thing... Mary said that the technique dates back to the 1880s but it is actually older ... I have seen quilts using this technique dating back to the 1830s... Popular for utility quilting... farm quilts ...thing is those got used up over time so not of samples remain.

    Why is it so important to cut from the WIDTH OF FABRIC (WOF) ?? Thank you!! 😄

    • @DH-qz2so
      @DH-qz2so 5 років тому

      @@VeeVeeVeeV Hi! With fabric yardage, Selvedge to Selvedge is called Width of Fabric...this particular 'grain' has more stretch when used in sewing....cutting the yardage lengthwise (Selvedge on one end only)..this is great for borders when you need more stability...
