Less than a minute in: "Once again [...] I am going to be FORCED, to hit you, with the *they don't make them like they used to*. I don't want to be like this guys. The thing is, that at least in this field, they genuenly don't make them like they used to. And I think investigating why that is could be interesting because... can't they? They should make this, but better, shouldn't they? Who's they?" 1 hours and 34 minutes left. Aaaaahhh, that OffyD Game Grounds content. Oh shit! It includes Lore rants? Honestly, how did I doubt about this.
Oh, by the way, the multiplayer scene of Supreme Commander is still alive today with the Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance Forever mod/client. It doesn't change much of the game and the whole economy control and stuff is insane. Also, they fixed some of the performance bottlenecks so now clouds of Air Superiority Fighters engaging no longer chugs every computer known to man.
So, there are actually quite a few attempts to replace Supreme Commander: Plantary Annihilation, Industrial Annihilation, Sanctuary Shattered Suns, Zero K, and Beyond All Reason. Problem is, I think all of them will ultimately struggle, for the same reason that live service games are struggling: multiplayer is the main selling point for all of them, so things like AI, story telling, and animations (which multiplayer people won't have time to look at,) don't matter as much, often leaving these elements ignored. But because it's much easier to make games like that, they also stand out less, and casual fans won't be lured in; so, the games become something for die hards, and they're much more likely to play a game that's proven to have kept its player base in the long term.
I was afraid to play this game because it sounded like I needed to be good at RTS to play it, but looks like I was wrong. Thanks Devon for the encouragement!
It's a strange one, in that it looks daunting, but you can play pretty casually and do whatever you want without being punished, so it's nice for experimenting and messing around.
I am just waiting for Devin to upload Supreme Sommander: Forged Alliance video which he would see the fabled Fourth faction and play as that while ranting how good it could have been when 'they' re-made it now.
I played the crap out of Supreme Commander as a kid. I'm not very far in but I'm sure Devin will cover all the adjacency bonuses that boosts the economy. Love to see this on the channel!
You're quite right RTS games used to have this platonic characterizaton of a Rational faction, a Passional one and a Spiritual one. Never saw Supreme Comander before, really seems ground-breaking for the era. Thank you Devin for showing us!
This really brought back memories. I dust off SupCom every few years, but it's always FA, never the original one, i had completely forgotten how different it was. Looking forward to your commentary on FA.
When you run out of power, the mass extractors start to turn off because they require a small amount of power to keep producing. That's why the economy tanks when the power tanks. Awesome video though!
1:00:00 engineers on patroll will do what they think it's best for the eco. So if you have alot of mass, they help build. if you lack mass, they reclaim it.
One of the best things about SC (apart from the fact that it STILL has working multiplayer matchmaking and community thanks to FAF and Gylecast) is that if you lose a mission, you can still progress and finish the campaign! This was a trick inherited from Total Annihilation and I wish more games did it!
Oh the glorious 2D icons! It's one of the biggest what-ifs for the genre, as in what would Total War be like if they zoomed out instead of zooming in with pretty but pointless 3D stuff, basically a Kings&Generals TW (btw I can't believe how that hasn't been done yet, literally an instant buy for thousands of subscribers and frustrated grumpy TW fans). Anyway, since you've talked about the economy for 2 seconds, here's my suggestion: Offworld Trading Company! No wars, just good old space capitalism. Also, after you finish the tutorial, the game still recommends a few skirmish matches for practice before you go into the campaign, so you know it's great for an offyd blind run
I would be fully behind k&g TW, I would make it myself! I think a few companies are supposedly working on TW killer games at the moment, I think the franchise's downfall hasn't gone unnoticed. But a glorious war of squares and circles is yet to be full realised! Anyway, I do have offworld trading company, just one of the hundred games I have sitting around for when I feel like trying something out, thanks for the tip!
@BRNKoINSANITY he was a great streamers of multiplayer supreme commander You can really sense in his game the whole equilibrium within mass and energy. Sometimes really going close to the 0-1 mass available that he is talking about and feeling the sense of satisfaction in it
Love the story in these old games. The three traditional factions "The Humans" "The swarm/Aliens" "The Religious" Love it. While I'm on this soap comment I'd recommend Hegemony 3 Or Hegemony Rise of Caesar if you ever are stumped on a what to play next.
I checked it out, and I think it's at least a step in the right direction. It doesn't reach the same scale, it seems, but it's like a little brother to SC without the production values. But I imagine the hard part - making a game engine that can actually run all the action at once - is in place, perhaps it can build on it from there.
Supreme Commander falls within that same unique style that Homeworld was in. For a game that came out in 1999, no one's really tried to copy its 3d space maps. Space RTS games that came out after for decades kept to the tried and true 2d scape. It's odd to see how some games die by their sequels while others don't. Homeworld 2 seems to have convinced the developers that there's no future with that kind of RTS. Just like Supreme Commander 2 also showed there was no larger interest in that style of game. Mainly because they streamlined the games too much, but didn't cater to a larger audience, and lost the original die-hard audience. They're just not profitable enough.
I STILL love hearing your voice reviewing games. Makes me smile every damn time. You are a general and a king good sir.

I am aware of all, and I just compare them to FAF and have no reason to invest in them. Supreme Commander FAF is still superior to all.

OffyD just can’t help hit ‘em with the game commentary “they don’t make ‘em like they used to”
They: [doesn't make 'em like they used to]

bro is hitting us with the RTS hermeneutics
Paying up my student loan has even more complex economic system.

Wow that's pretty cool, didn't realise that!
Ooh yeah, Supreme Commander! One of the greats for sure. Played it a ton as a kid
After watching this I highly recommend rusted warfare, it's only 5 USD on steam and often on sale for less than 3 but has much the same energy
That's a cute game, it's what I imagined myself making when I see SC and wish for more. Just bought it!
God, I spent way too many hours in Supreme Commander during Highschool. It's one of the strategy games that never quite lets you go

I would love to see you play The Matchless Kunfu

Check out winter falling: battle tactics. It is in early access though

Nice tip, I'll check him out. Now and again I watch gylecast and a guy called tactical takedown who do similar stuff.

Beyond All Reason is a modern version of this.

Now - this - is quantum!
I dunno if you have already but please play total annihilation, this game was it’s spiritual successor
I thought ta was much older than supp comm? I have it on gig, haven't played though
