Depends on the trip. I haven't used it YET but I have a date with the Camino late spring next year. I will be journaling but I am under the impression that aqua is freely available pretty much along the journey so I'm not really concerned about lugging much water.
Neither! I bought this pack and returned it because of both the back compartment and the hip belt issue that you called out. Was a great carry and carried a ton but those two things killed me from keeping this - especially in more urban environments or business trips. You also don't have anywhere to store the hydration port when it's not in use so that didn't work either (though I tried!).
I probably wouldn't use a bladder while travelling (unless I was specifically for the outdoors) but I'm wary of putting my laptop in places that aren't specifically designed for it. It seems like a good place to put documents that you wouldn't use as often (spare ID, extra copies of itinerary etc.)
I've just bought a new version of ruck pack 40 recently. Actually I did know that updated version has been released ....and still no one seems to have compared or reviewed yet. Here are some changes I noticed. • 2 loops on the straps are not stretchable • Slight change on back panel • The handle on the top is thick as the one on sides • Side pockets for bottle are not compressible. No straps • No zip compartment on the bottom • No hidden straps 7:52 on the top • Slight change on the top pocket •The direction of the zippers on the side pockets has been changed from the outside to the back • Right side pocket has one organization, erastic band for pens and hidden pocket • Left side zipper can go down to the bottom. No devider so you can fully access to the main compartment. • Side compression straps don't go over the side pocket zipper. Sorry for my bad English. I hope this helps someone.

I’ve traveled over 250,000 miles this year alone with this pack as my one-bag travel companion. One of the best luggage investments I’ve ever made, and the quality is still holding up after 10 months of continuous travel. I’ve checked it in, it’s been tossed around, the straps are fraying, but I love this pack. I’ve even used it for a 4 night backpacking trip! Not optimal, but it worked out great and was comfortable while trekking through New Zealand! The hidden daisy chains are my favorite feature
Did your flights in New Zealand allow you to take this bag as a carry on? I am going there January and need a carry on bag that will not be made to be thrown in checked luggage
Hello, great review. I just found one at a thrift store for 7$. I believe the side zipper pull tabs also function as additional security. By putting the zipper pull through them, it would be harder for a pickpocket to unzip the side pocket.
Two items, side “pull tabs” are there to lock the side zippers to. Second, the “small annoyance “ of unclipping the compression straps to open it all the way is really helpful so you can use the bag as a top access. I have carried this bag for two expenses over seas travel. First carrying it to Everest Base Camp (80 miles 12 days) and Tour Du Mont Blanc (110 miles 11days). Both trips included court travel before and after. I would highly recommend this pack. I have a 2nd generation Patagonia MLC carryon and this bag is much better.
Great review! Would be awesome if you could also review the newer, larger Ruckpack 65 as well. I haven’t been able to find anything as detailed on UA-cam for that bag yet and I’m having trouble deciding between the 40 and 65 version. Keep up the good work.
the side pull tabs for the zipper are looped. its like pacsafe and some other bags, when not in use, just slide the zipper through it so its harder for pick pockets to open up your pocket.
I’d love to see you review the rei trail 40. It’s got a fair amount of fans. It’s had some changes over the last couple of years but it’s still an excellent bag. Even with the price increase, I think it is a great value.
I used the similar REI Trail 40 for the El Camino de Santiago in Oct. 2017. It was perfect for that application, very comfortable and survived the trip with minimal wear. It worked carry-on even though it was slightly over the TSA limit of 9x14x22. Hiking poles are not carry-on compatible so I checked them in a cardboard tube which was a major pain in the butt in Barcelona when they put them on a special carousel that was hard to find. I tried out the Ruckpack 40 at my local REI loaded with 20 lbs of sandbags which was slightly more than my El Camino load. The Ruckpack 40 was not quite as comfortable as the Trail 40, but it was close. The waist and shoulder belts were both hide-able under a zippered flap on the Ruckpack 40 I tested so I was surprised when you said the waist belt wasn't hide-able, although granted the waist belt is hard to get under the flap.
Great detailed review as always, and awesome, no frills shots of the actual bag. The overall shape and opening reminds me a lot of the Arcteryx Khard / Vanquest IBEX, and the side pockets of the Camelbak Trizip (this is a good thing IMO). Also, thank you for including the women's version, and women reviewers across all your reviews! From a short girl with excessive bag/gear acquisition syndrom, it is much appreciated!
Can't decide between the RuckPack 40 or the Osprey Farpoint 40. Leaning towards the Farpoint as I plan on hiking long distances and it seems like a better engineered pack. The REI looks much more discrete though, and I really wish Osprey included a raincover
This is a good review. I may have missed it, but you don’t make mention of the lack of a top carry/hold handle though. I love my Ruckpack but have found that omission pretty annoying because with the bag not able to stand on its own, there is no way to hold it upright easily, when accessing the top pocket or trying to get to just the top of the main compartment.

which backpack 40L holds more - REI or EC Global Companion- REI looks much bigger on Hannah's back so was thinking that although both are 40L, that REI may be able to carry more. Which one is more durable? Also, I want to hike mountains, etc, which one would be better to use? I'm torn. I need room and comfort but also durability as I want it to last a few years. I have the D weight of the EC but not the REI. Many thanks, Jazz
About to take this pack to Europe for 2 weeks. So far, it works super well! Also, in regards to the laptop pocket; there is actually padded foam at the bottom of it. That along with the back mesh on the exterior and clothes on the interior, I haven't needed to worry about using a padded computer sleeve. In the end though it all depends on your preference.
Another great review, Tom! I like that you guys have been adding bloopers to the end of each review, nobody is perfect and that adds a little something funny to each review. I like most of the features of this bag. The pockets, all of the little hook places on the outside, rain cover, and compression straps. However, the hip belt is a deal breaker for me personally. I believe that should be a hide-able/removable feature.
@@PackHacker I own this pack and i'm about to take a 1-2month trip with it. I saw in another video that they just folded-in the hip belts and then folded the strap cover inward+tuck to semi hide it. then the hip belt sort of becomes a lumbar support. (seemed like a decent work-around)
How do you feel the "5 liters" difference between this and the AER travel 2 ? I torn between thoses 2 and the setout but I can't tell if the higher capacity has a big impact on the overall experience. Maybe I'm better off going for the AER (my favorite) and an extra packable duffel bag for when I bring back gifts or go heavy like for a cold climate. Thanks for the review anyway !
Hey ada! I think you answered your own question in your comments. If the Aer is "your favorite", go for that one! Having a packable daypack or duffel is a great option just in case. - Tom
Thanks for the review. I would have appreciate a lot more coverage and discussion on the main compartment. You guys spent nearly 10 minutes covering “external” areas and barely mentioned anything about the main compartment. Based on the screen at 11:54, it looks like it doesn’t even open entirely. Could you provide some comment on the main compartment please?
Hey jneb748 - We'd be more than happy to answer any specific questions you have. The opening of the main compartment doesn't go all the way down to the bottom but it's more than enough for organization and access. - Tom
Hey, thanks for sharing this review. Awesome video production. Could I get your advice on this? I'm contemplating a purchase between this pack, Farpoint 40 and REI trail 40. Main use case is to bring it on long term travel but it needs to work as a backpacking pack as well. While I'm not very particular about the urban look, I need the strap to be sturdy enough to support a hike of 4 days to 2 weeks in the Himalayas. I'm a lady so I appreciate the details about the thickness of strap but still can't quite make out the quality from the video. Also I live outside of the US so can't test them out myself. Which of the pack would you recommend?
Hi consumativ-great question! I really like the straps of the REI Ruckpack 40, they are curved and padded enough for comfort. If I was in your shoes, I believe I would choose the Ruckpack 40 (women's version) simply because of it's comfortable carry and ease to use. If you are still considering the Farpoint 40 (which is another great option)-I urge you to take a look at the Fairview 40 instead, as this is designed specifically with women in mind. Considering he likes to wear those puffy jackets (like the nano puff from patagonia), I am surprised his only mention of the exposed zipper was on the aesthetics side. Jackets like that always get the brick shaped thread caught on things like zippers, I would hate it if my pack took a thread out of my jacket.
That's a difficult one! It really depends what you prefer. A couple of our team members have used the Osprey Farpoint 40 for continuous travel and it's held up great. Based on that, it may have a leg up in our decision! Hope that helps. -Hannah
The side system looks great, but I don’t understand why it the zip faces outwards, that just makes it less secure if you want to put phone/keys/wallet. The zip should face the wearers back.
brought one home to try out, wish the side water bottle pockets were square cut on the bottom so my taller bottles stayed in, planing on cutting the hip belt away, wish it came off like my Kelty. not sure what the plastic do hickys are on the elastic cords on the back
Hey Chuck woof - thanks for sharing your experience with us. And, we get what you're saying about the hip belt, we found this to be pretty annoying as we tend to prefer removable or hideable hip belts so you can tighten things up when you don't need that extra support. 👍 - Rebecca
So this will be a good option to do a 20 day backpacking ? For $54 dlrs I should get this back pack or I should spend more money and invest in a Osprey 40 fair point ?

Hey Dhanush - from our experience we've found that airline carry-on specifications differ, so we recommend checking with the individual airline before you fly. 😊 - Rebecca
When I looked at this bag in person, I thought it was quite strange that the main compartment completely opens up and stuff can fall out of the top side. Seems like a dumb choice in my mind and i would guess I would lose stuff that comes falling out of the top side of the pack. especially when its really full
Hey scootermcgoot, we see what you mean there. We've ended up really enjoying the design because it gives you some slick quick accessibility at the top of the pack. 👌 -Hannah

Hi thanks for the review. Don't know if you still get to see the comment. It would be great if you can take some time and reply. I wonder if a woman with 5'2-5'3 get to use man's version? Is the strap adjustable? Love the color of brown one but they only have man's version for that color. :(
Hey Joaquin, the women-focused option is designed for a smaller frame. It has slightly thicker straps, while the men’s are more narrow, plus they are shaped slightly differently, too. The women’s harness is anchored a bit lower than the men’s version, which is done to optimize the pack for smaller torsos-and because it’s anchored lower, it also sits a bit higher on your back. We haven't tested the men's focused harness system on a smaller frame, so we cannot verify the fit 100%, but both packs do have adjustable straps on the shoulder straps and on the load lifters. Just as a note, the sternum strap and shoulder straps don’t offer anything in terms of strap management, which means you’re going to have some dangling straps on various parts of this bag especially if you need the straps shorter. Hope this helps! We also recommend checking out the full written review here: packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/ - Rebecca
Hey Nicolás! Tons of great packs to choose from. For instance, we rated this one an 8.2, whereas the Peak Design Travel Backpack we rated an 8.9. -Hannah
That's a real shame Flavio. Interesting that Deuter is available, it's been a pack we've had our eye on for a while to test out. All the best, - Nathan
Hey Rome LJ - we agree, we found this pretty annoying and would prefer removable or hideable hip belts so you can tidy things up when you don't need that extra support. Thanks for watching! 👍 - Rebecca

Thanks for reaching out! It really depends on your torso length and build-the women's harness system is anchored a bit lower than the men's version-other than that they are the same size. For reference, here you can find Tom & I's torso length: ua-cam.com/video/Vn-YOJt-3GM/v-deo.html Hope this helps! -Hannah
Hey Jayson! We've found that all airlines have different carry-on specifications, so we always recommend checking with the individual airline you're flying with before you leave. You can also check out our Carry-On Compliance feature on the full review which you can use as a guideline to check out the carry-on specifications for over 100 airlines. packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/ Hope this helps! - Rebecca
I like that they have a men's and women's version. I don't like that they assume all women are short. Which probably means that for me the hip straps are way too high. I also noticed (really good!) that the chest strap is much lower! I cannot really use most chest straps because, boobs....
@@PackHacker Thank you, I have only just started looking for new luggage. I have been traveling with a big roller suitcase (and so fed up with it), and my old backpack is a big top loader for trekking, totally adjustable so torso length isn't an issue.. My stuff is old and falling apart so a good time to rethink travelling. The Tortuga Setout divide is top of my list right now.

Hey Diane - this pack is carry-on compliant, but size specifications do vary between airlines, so we recommend checking with the individual airline before you fly. Hope this helps! 😊 - Rebecca
Hey DEVRAJ! We typically try to stay within carry-on compliance as we love to travel that way so we likely won't if I'm being honest! Hope this review helps regardless. - Tom

If you pack it full it won’t, but because it’s somewhat of a soft shell you could squeeze it in but you’ll most likely lose the top quick access pocket.
Would you use the internal sleeve compartment for a hydration bladder or a laptop?
I guess a bladder since you pointed out the issue with a laptop going there?

Hey! O watch all your videos, can you make a Review for the REI trail 40? Seems like a good option for one bag travel. Thanks!
So this will be a good option to do a 20 day backpacking ? For $54 dlrs I should get this back pack or I should spend more money and invest in a Osprey 40 fair point ?
Excellent review. Thank you,.
I had a tough choice between this one and the trail 40 but eventually went with the trail 40 because it was on sale at 58.99 compared to 100+.
Thanks for sharing, Midwest Louis! Let us know how you get on with this pack, we'd love to hear if it works for you. 😊👍

For you what would be the best travel backpack or Top 5 list.
Hey mArLon DaYdAy - we recommend checking out our new sorting filter, you can now filter different types of travel gear and then sort by the highest rating packhacker.com/travel-gear/category/bags-and-luggage/travel-backpacks/?order=rating which will help you see a list of our highest rated packs. 😊

Has anyone on your team tried using this backpack as a carry on European airplanes (where the carry-on dimensions are smaller).
Hey Dhanush - from our experience we've found that airline carry-on specifications differ, so we recommend checking with the individual airline before you fly. 😊
- Rebecca
I carried on for a domestic Lufthansa flight.
-Hannah
Love this back pack but afraid that it won’t pass as a carryon because of the dimension. Has anyone taken this pack as a carry on ?
We haven't had any issues yet-but we recommend checking with your respective airline(s)!
-Hannah
Yeah, I was considering this pack until I realized that it exceeds European budget airlines' carry-on dimensions.
I can't decide between this one and Osprey Fairview 40. Can someone help me to decide between the two?
Damn you're doing a great job - wow
Glad you're digging the content Elias R. - stay tuned for more! 😊👍

I'm curious what you guys think of the Waymark Gear Thru 40 packs? Lighter weight and a bit simpler, but too simple??! idk
Also in the Q&A on REI's site, they say that the hip belt can be hidden away, but the velcro might be a bit hidden
@@RevibinDesigns - for the hip belt, it's not easily hideable, however, this strategy will work ua-cam.com/video/qtPl7MsfGKk/v-deo.html
The Waymark Gear Thru 40 packs aren't on our immediate list but we'll check them out!

Excellent! Thank you!

Black is Beautiful

I'm wondering if this backpack is carry-on friendly for a flight? 🤔
This pack isn’t your best bet for a carry-on! 😞
-Eric
I love this bagpack I want buy a one but I don't have money
you still recomend the peak desing travel over this one? i need one carry on bag to travel and i still confused
Hey Nicolás! Tons of great packs to choose from. For instance, we rated this one an 8.2, whereas the Peak Design Travel Backpack we rated an 8.9.
-Hannah
In brasil we don't have nothing like this.....
Only deuter 40l for 250 dollars....😕😕
That's a real shame Flavio. Interesting that Deuter is available, it's been a pack we've had our eye on for a while to test out. All the best,
- Nathan
This bag would be perfect of the hip belt was removable or stowable!!
Hey Rome LJ - we agree, we found this pretty annoying and would prefer removable or hideable hip belts so you can tidy things up when you don't need that extra support. Thanks for watching! 👍
- Rebecca
Any bag that is similar to this that you cqn tuck the hip belt?
"Of course we went with black, because, black."

How would you rate this pack against Eagle Creek’s Wayfinder 40L?
Hey! We recommend checking out the full reviews of the REI Ruckpack 40 packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/ and the Eagle Creek Wayfinder Backpack 40L packhacker.com/travel-gear/eagle-creek/wayfinder-backpack-40l/ to compare the ratings. 😊👍

Would be awesome but if you cant hide the hip straps then its a no-deal
Hey Knugen - it's great to hear that you've found which features are a must-have for you, it's so important to work this out so that you can find a backpack that's going to work for you and your travel style. 😊
- Rebecca
i'm a 5'5 guy, would getting the female version pack be a better option?
Thanks for reaching out! It really depends on your torso length and build-the women's harness system is anchored a bit lower than the men's version-other than that they are the same size. For reference, here you can find Tom & I's torso length: ua-cam.com/video/Vn-YOJt-3GM/v-deo.html
Hope this helps!
-Hannah
Thanks Hannah for the chart and breakdown, and DJNess for the real life experience. Will look to get the men's version soon. Cheers!
Can you carry this pack in the plane and a regular 20 lb carry on roller?
Hey Jayson! We've found that all airlines have different carry-on specifications, so we always recommend checking with the individual airline you're flying with before you leave. You can also check out our Carry-On Compliance feature on the full review which you can use as a guideline to check out the carry-on specifications for over 100 airlines. packhacker.com/travel-gear/rei/ruckpack-40/
Hope this helps!

I like that they have a men's and women's version. I don't like that they assume all women are short. Which probably means that for me the hip straps are way too high. I also noticed (really good!) that the chest strap is much lower! I cannot really use most chest straps because, boobs....
Great point, AafkeArt! The women's version fit me nicely and I'm about 5'3". Happy to answer any questions you may have regarding fit!
-Hannah
@@PackHacker I'm 5.11....
@@AafkeArt Are there any other packs you prefer to wear that fit well? I know height can change things up!
-Hannah
@@PackHacker Thank you, I have only just started looking for new luggage. I have been traveling with a big roller suitcase (and so fed up with it), and my old backpack is a big top loader for trekking, totally adjustable so torso length isn't an issue.. My stuff is old and falling apart so a good time to rethink travelling. The Tortuga Setout divide is top of my list right now.
@@AafkeArt I understand! The Tortuga Setout Divide is a great option. You could also check out their Setout Laptop Backpack, it's very similar but a bit cheaper! Link: www.tortugabackpacks.com/products/setout-laptop-backpack

Damn I think I'm gonna get this one over the 65
It's a great carry! 👍
-Hannah
Is this carry on size? Arc’teryx Brize 25/32 review please?
Every airline has different requirements-we recommend checking with the one you're flying with to ensure you're good! 👍
Stay tuned for some upcoming Arc-Teryx reviews!

Will you ever review Tom BIhn?
You bet Igor! We've got the Synapse on deck in a recently released colorway. Stay tuned!

Guessing that's the Guide Edition, yeah?
We don't have the Guide Edition, but we do have the Nebulous Grey with Island Halcyon interior 👍

Can you do review at KAKA travel outdoor backpack 2070 yh2 ( 50L)
Hi 808JOKER - it's not on our immediate list but we may consider it!
- Tom
Is this actually carry on size since it’s length is 24”?
Hey Diane - this pack is carry-on compliant, but size specifications do vary between airlines, so we recommend checking with the individual airline before you fly. Hope this helps! 😊
- Rebecca
@@PackHacker Thank you. I am completely addicted to your website and channel!
Glad you're digging it, Diane! 👍

I would follow on Instagram if they offered the men's pack in seaweed.

Mission Workshop Radian is $585!!! So about 5 of these REI bag. No. Bad comparison.
The Radian is one example of many other packs we've reviewed that offer removable hip belts.

This is a dope alternative to the GR3 which I will now never be able to afford.
🙊 ...always happy to help!

Hi could you do a review of REI Ruckpack 65????? #packhacker #REI
Hey DEVRAJ! We typically try to stay within carry-on compliance as we love to travel that way so we likely won't if I'm being honest! Hope this review helps regardless.
- Tom
hello!!!!, can you make a rviwe of the Lowepro Highline BP 400 AW??? its a 36 L. Thanks
It's not in our immediate pipeline, but we'll check it out!

It's too big for European airlines. I just checked and its too tall for carry on.
No carry on, no buy :(
Bummer, Dufffaaa93. We always recommend checking with airlines before purchasing a pack. 👍
Let us know if you find another pack that works out better for you!

I use this on all china flights
@@spellerlittlewing-thanks for sharing!

If you pack it full it won’t, but because it’s somewhat of a soft shell you could squeeze it in but you’ll most likely lose the top quick access pocket.
Great point neojei-don't forget there's an aluminum frame, too!
Ykk made almost all the zipper in the world..
You got it senyum0!

Yup..yup...
I was gonna say anyone who's owned a pair of jeans has heard of ykk. 😂
