  • Ghana is one of the most expensive countries to live in Africa.
    The price of essential goods and services has increased sharply since the beginning of the pandemic.
    "It’s too much for us," some say, adding that the situation has become unbearable.
    Rising fuel and food prices are affecting all parts of society. In the last four months the price of drinking water has risen twice.

      Ghana is so expensive and salaries are too low. Factory floor workers, shop attendants, security workers and restaurant waiters receive the equivalent of (GHS 535) $70 per month in Accra. That's $70 for working 26 days per month. Sometimes their Social Security benefits are not even paid by the employer. It's sad.
      And confused Akuffo Addo's government keeps borrowing and importing, increasing taxes, and taking us into more debt.

      Farmers use to produce a lot locally but our very own people will not consume it. Lots of farmers run losses, making farming a bad business to venture.

    • @rond5936
      @rond5936 2 роки тому +7

      @@clementkyeisarpong9367 That's absolutely not true. Importation of cheaper foreign onions from Europe by Ghanaian importers and much better quality tomatoes from cote d'Ivoire made it difficult for some of our farmers. Just like we still import more cheaper frozen chicken, rice and eggs from Europe. The government signs continue to sign trade deals with Europe and China which are unfavourable to our local farmers and manufacturers. When confused Akuffo Addo is going for big loans from outside, some of the conditions given to the country is to lower import duites we charge at our Tema ports from that country so they can sell us their produce. This makes local manufacturers and farmers become uncompetitive.

    I cannot understand why Ghana needs to import staples such as tinned tomatoes fresh tomatoes okra cassava and rice from China and India when they have plenty fertile agricultural lands to grow their own. The ministers who are responsible for agriculture and importation should be held to account. We need to re educate Ghanaians that not everything from china and india is the best.

      It's hardly about Ghanaian education. All that is in our textbooks in high schools and basic school levels. The problem is those in power & government who are supposed to facilitate that expectation. For some unexplained reason, NO ONE, seems to be able to get this very basic issues solved. This has been a problem for DECADES. And trust me, all Ghanaians are taught about 'problems of Agriculture in Ghana with solutions'. You can't miss it in our educational system. Question is, why do the problems still persist. My answer - it's delibrate.

    The people saying "the prices aren't only increasing in Ghana" are part of the problem. It is their leaders and their willful mismanagement of the country that has caused prices to skyrocket. Indomie which was one of the most accessible foods (albeit unhealthy) has doubled in price. Milk that could be bought for 10ghs now goes for up to 26ghs. If you love and want to help Ghana then at least be honest and call the situation out for what it is.

    What's happening to Ghana 🇬🇭 right now is Greed. Back in 2015 or so, Ghana had the return to Africa with many blacks wanting to return to their homeland. Many of which selected Ghana because it was welcoming. The Error of the Ghanaian Government and people was to more than double, some cases triple the prices of basic things even homes, potential lands for business, and cost of living in general. Thus, welcoming the Western greedy way of running things rather than maintaining their previous system. Now, most of those same potential investors are pulling out and living the country due to high cost and the citizens are left to suffer for their errors. A country that was in excess, everything has now been commercialized. A time ticking craze...

Nigeria closed it land borders which affected Nigerians negatively but it payed off because it reduced imports of illegal goods into the country. Nigeria’s import have reduced significantly. Most of our import are tech based import from China and Europe. We now produce many food products that used to be imported from Europe. Ghana needs to do the same.

Those foreigners don't invest in businesses that employ the local population rather their presence has push up the cost of commodities. I blame the government for not thinking through this whole saga of inviting people to come to a country with not so good infrastructure, the private education is expensive, as the government schools are not fit for purpose as they use to be. Property developers sell houses for thousands of dollars which locals can only dream of. Its a problem and the government has run out of ideas.

Food prices, transportation, medicals bills and almost every other cost is in our local currency. I've never walked to any Ghanaian shop in a mall or market and see prices quotes in USD. Eve bulk purchases of items are in GHS.
      Ghana has been adopting western standards of business regulation and economic management for a long time. Western countries are always associated with higher cost of doing so many. But wages of workers are extremely low. Between $60 and $100 per month for factory and restaurant workers, and thats in Accra. Low salaries and higher taxes and cost just produce challenging environment for workers.

    Those saying it's a global thing should quit it! Inflation is heavily dependent on two things in Ghana, in dollar and fuel prices. We mine crude oil in our country, what we mine a day, a quarter of it can meet the country's demand. But we export all at a cheaper price and import the finished product at a higher rate. Mind you, we have a processing plant that can refine the crude but the company doesn't work, it just employs people and pay them hefty at the end of the month. So private individuals import the fuel into the country and sell to us. It will not be in their best interest if the Govt starts producing it's own fuel, because they would stop making money, so they would rather cripple the citizens to make profits.

      @@heartsandpearls239 I like the point you're making but actually the oil we produce is far less than 200 thousand barrels a day. And Ghana consumes over 100 thousand barrels a day. Back in 2016 Ghana was already using as much crude oil than we produced if not more. I'm not sure of the statistics in 2022, but with the current trajectory from 2016 it's likely Ghana is already consuming more oil than we produce.
