The people on this flight know more about aviation than many people I bump into...TOGA power, Go around, most people have no clue. Brilliant...
Why do we need to? It's a plane and gets you from A to B. When you go on a cruise do you need to know all their procedures?
@@piusx8317 I don't think Sturvin Murvin was implying that you need to know lots of information
@@piusx8317 I don't know, that is your question not mine. I personally enjoy learning as much as I can in life about everything I interact with. That way I have a bigger picture perspective. I used to just coast through life not caring much for anything really, life is more exciting when you know what is going on. Different strokes for different folks I guess ;)
Although suggesting the plane has enough fuel to fly all the way back to Iceland was an eyeroller
@@visionist7 How come? A 767 is more than capable of that and it would be a very good decision from the captain based on the weather that day and the number of go arounds and diversions. A few A320s diverted from LHR to Spain. A 3 hour flight. So it's likely the aircraft was prepared for a return to Keflavik.
The reason that Air Travel is so safe is because no risks are taken hence the "Go around"
The plane can withstand the biggest of lightning strikes and continue to fly safely. All in a days work for the crew.
Not quite in a day's work... it's a rare to take a lightning hit. The airframes are designed as much as possible to conduct the current, to protect critical systems, but an aircraft with a confirmed lightning strike needs to land as soon as practicable. Airliners are not immune from the effects of lightning. In a company I worked for, operating 767s, half the rudder was severely damaged from a lightning strike and required extensive repair.
I completely agree. Of course, a lightning strike is not ideal but I would feel much safer on an aircraft than on, for example, a ship. There is also more time to react to situations and the crew brief go arounds and diversions so it would not be a 'Oh no what are we going to do?! Panic!' moment
Skip to 4:27 for lightening
PS. Its not what you expected
What were you expecting?
It was what I was expecting lol
@@leomacherla they don’t carry enough fuel to return all that way. Common procedure is the amount treat need for the flight plus 10% for diversion/Holding at there destination.
@@markdowney1340 Yes under normal circumstances I know they would. However, I wonder if they would have carried extra for this flight because of the weather conditions on that day. The aircraft would most probably be the most useful back in Keflavik for Icelandair and they don't need to worry so much about sorting out transfer for passengers from a potential diversion airport to Heathrow. They can just fly the passengers back out from Keflavik.
Of course, I might be wrong. It's just what my immediate thoughts are
Love the commentary / conversation throughout the clip. Together with the background hubbub, it gives a real sense of what was going on and the atmosphere in the plane. Knowledgeable chat too. Excellent.
It definitely wasn’t knowledgeable 😂
@@zktom Why?
@@checklistspro2072 just wasn't. No way they would go back to Reykjavic or Munich if diverted, way too far away. Most likely Amsterdam, Brussels or Paris, as less likely to be affected by the storm than say Manchester. And no the pilots would not have been stressed, they've trained meticulously for those situations, and the planes can more than handle it - just another day in the office. Was probably back on autopilot for the go around, following ATC instructions
@@Spudnash Oh no I appreciate that it might not have been correct
I was gonna say🤣
I love how calm you guys are! I experienced a go around with ryanair when a storm hit Europe in December 2019, I most fainted on that plane
This was like watching a drama series. Loved the conversation
Brilliant conversation, very knowledgeable.
I landed from a long haul from Rio when Eunice decided to hit. It was similar to this and quite frightening but amazing at the same time. Captain got a good clap. Also like both of your commentary throughout.
Thanks! The captain got a clap as well as some cheering after this landing haha
Nice video flying into Lhr on 27L and 27R is amazing I love it. And the pilots love the tricky landings
This was incredible👀
Have faith in your Pilots ❤ ✈
Absolutely👍 we knew whichever way they would make the correct decisions.
@@vamshimacherla5301 great footage though, reassuring for those who maybe frightened to fly.
I just love your polite, well spoken, articulate conversation whist in a storm 😆 Brilliant
This is probably the best comment of them all!
Lol at the two in the background commentating ‘we need to be above the clouds’ pretty sure the pilots knew what they were doing
We weren't questioning their decisions. We were just having a conversation haha
So glad someone else feels this way! I found their constant, nerve laced, chatter, most irritating. Lol
Wowow! Scary
Buddy sounding like Ron Weasleys brothers
I would guess (suggest) that was a lightning strike caused by your aircraft as a static dis-charge just like when you rub your hand along a rail and you create static i have witnessed this once when i happened to be watching a plane fly into a rain cloud a lightning strike was created by the plane reacting with the charged particles in the atmosphere....the one lightning bolt came from the cloud and struck the plane......aircraft continued flying as normal (as did your plane thank goodness)
I have to say, if I were a Passenger seated near this couple, their constant commentary of guesses and assumptions, and so on, would have driven me absolutely, utterly, insane. Lol. I'd probably have been wishing Storm Eunice would be a tad bit more isolated. Lol. Great video, but I wished I'd turned the sound off, as I'm genuinely left irritated, over something in the past! I probably should get therapy. Lol. Glad everyone made it to the ground safely in the end, though. That's the main thing. ☺
4:27 thank me later
Nah imma thank you right now
Awesome capture! May I feature this lightning strike in one of my next episodes? Of course with a link back to your original video. Keep up the great work!
Absolutely no problem at all you are welcome 👍😊
OMG COOL
Hi there, amazing clip! May I feature this in one of my videos, of course you will be credited in the video and description.
Busy flight to ! Which is good
The conversation is entertaining. Why on earth would a flight from Keflavik to Heathrow divert to Munich? They would almost be as quick to go back to Keflavik. I realise the woman talking is from the London area so she probably thinks the world stops somewhere around Watford but Icelandair fly from both Glasgow and Manchester either of which would be a much more obvious diversion.
A flight departing from Keflavik to Manchester was severely delayed because of the weather. I think the weather at EGCC was much worse. Glasgow, however, would probably make sense
Gatwick, Stansted, Manchester, East Midlands, Bristol, Bournemouth in the UK plus many, many places in northern Europe all much closer than Munich in Southern Germany.
@@grahamepigney8565 The weather was very similar in all of these places. I don't know all of Icelandair's routes but I remembered (on the flight) that there was a flight departing to Munich and I assumed that would be far enough away that the weather would have improved. If it was any other storm then all of the major airport in the UK would likely suffice.
@@leomacherla Lots of planes managed to land after go-arounds. 2hrs or so to Munich or 3 hrs plus back to Reykjavich is just nonsense. Where did this flight land after the go-round?
@@leomacherla It's pretty unlikely they are carrying enough fuel for return to Iceland. Diversion to East Mids, Birmingham, or even Paris more likely (although the latter is less likely due to potential immigration issues I would think, should there be further problems).
Interesting how much the scared pax try to make their conversation sound as casual as possible
That and also the "nonchalant" laughter as if the whole thing is humorous even though their heartbeat is probably 200 bpm. It's a brain chemical reaction i guess :D
@@imanuelcaushi4711 There was a very tense atmosphere in the cabin but it was also quite fun!
@@leomacherla I do not doubt it. I've been in a few go-arounds myself, but being deeply passionate about aviation, for me it is an interesting process more than anything. Hearing the audio on the video I can tell you guys share a similar passion - however for people who do not I'm certain go-arounds or anything which feels "abnormal" is quite a scary experience.
Or maybe they’re just not scared? Lol
@@alexmccabe1948 Exactly haha
"we'll probably go back to Reykjavik" my first thought would have been Gatwick / Luton / Stansted / Manchester....
Winds likely to be the same at any of these alternates
@@vamshimacherla5301 fair point.
@@vamshimacherla5301 Doesn't matter, as long as its roughly down the runway then thats far, far easier.
Birmingham or Stansted are more North/South aligned.
They will not have carried fuel to go back to Reykjavik.
@@vamshimacherla5301 planes don’t carry fuel to go there and back, only if they are tankering it
@@infinite2246 We assumed that it would be more convenient for Icelandair to return their aircraft to Reykjavik than to divert somewhere else in the UK. It would mean that they could put us on another of their flights to LHR from KEF.
I love it when people try to pretend they know what they're talking about
They must have watched aviationvideos, they have a pretty good grasp.
like you as well
They’re either pilots or very enthusiastic. They seem to know quite a bit
ET says they are still circling around the airport
Please get us down. We've been on this plane for 3 weeks. I want to phone home...... Please!!!!!!
She speaks a lot.
She was crapping herself
@@JohnDoe-vo4bk no cap your the roblox hacker eh ?
Who?
I suspect you were going quickly over the ground because they didn't want to take the plane any higher into that cloud.
When was the lightning strike?
4:27
That was pretty close to the plane, too. Yikes 😳
@@GracemarieJohnson2763 It struck the aircraft
@@leomacherla Did you do the lightning inspection after landing then?!
@@Sterlingjob I imagine there was an inspection. The strike can't have caused much damage though because by the time we got home, the aircraft was already on it's way back to Keflavik!
You are allowed 3 landing attempts before you MUST divert and declare fuel emergency so that you have priority landing at your diversion airfield.
false.
@@adamdriver1016 Which part is false?
@@leomacherla
All of it.
Each company will have its own Operations Manual A laying out the rules in terms of approaches and diversions. There are national rules in terms of fuel as well that must be followed but these are incorporated in the operations manual.
If you have the fuel you can make as many approached as you like. Most airline don't like more than two, as it scares the passengers, though the captain can make as many as he/she likes. It would be ridiculous to say you must divert after three attempts if the weather has improved and your diversion airfield is worse. Ultimately the Captain will make the decision.
You will only declare a fuel emergency if you're likely to land below final reserve, 30 mins, (though different companies may have slightly different rules) so you can make three approaches, divert and still have 2 hours of fuel. You will not get a priority landing and you SHOULD NOT declare an emergency.
@@adamdriver1016 I see. That makes sense
Incorrect. The company I work for would be most upset if you made 3 attempts without a significant change in conditions. 2 Attempts and you're diverting.
4:22..🙂
tell me you're pilots without telling me you're pilots
They're definitely not pilots
I am a plane driver
How refreshing listening to an intelligent conversation …… if they’d been Americans … all you’d have heard was ……” owe m’eye gaaard “
Haha thanks!
I find it quite poor that there's no reassuring announcement from the flight deck or cabin crew. Having had a few go around and indeed if you watch any videos on UA-cam, easyjet for example, immediately when they go around the cabin crew make an announcement. It usually helps alleviate the worry or conversation heard in this video. Although not a surprise since my personal experience of Icelandair has been piss poor
I watched an EasyJet go around recently. I think it was during Storm Eunice and I also noticed the immediate announcement from the cabin crew. The captain did actually make an announcement (although it was a few minutes after the go around) informing us that the go around was due to traffic on the runway.
@Danny Williams agreed
Absolutely true, I was waiting for the announcement.
@Danny Williams I'm afraid most pilots would disagree. Some passengers won't have a clue what's going on. You have to think and support the most nervous, silence is deafining. The Cabin Crew are literally doing nothing at this time because the cabin is (and will remain) secure. All it takes is for them to reach and pick up the PA handset. It's hardly a difficult task. I'm an Airbus captain and would endevaour to make a PA personally to explain what the plan is. There is nothing to brief and there should be plenty of time downwind to get it done. It also serves to inform the cabin crew what the plan is (eg, we'll be on the ground in 5 mins or whatever), saves telling them over the intercom then making a PA to the passengers afterwards. That would be a waste of effort from the flight deck.
Aviate, navigate and communicate in THAT order.
4:28
THAS A TURBULENCI
I bet they watch BIGJET TV lol!
It's not lightning strikes it's the throbbing light of the plane reflecting on the clouds
That's the strobe light. There is only one lightning strike in the video at around 04:27.
@@leomacherla ah ok. I saw. I fly Icelandair all the time. The icelandic pilot school academy is one of the best because of the harsh environment in Iceland. They usually first fly interior flights on turboprop planes with considerable amount of cross winds and bad weather.
@@0sirisREx I can imagine! Icelandair was chosen for expeditions to Antarctica because the pilots have lots of experience with bad, icy conditions.
Divert back?? Honestly!!
@Lea Thomas it seemed like a very logical option. The aircraft would be much more useful back in Keflavik, It would cause less hassle for the passengers, and the weather would have been considerably better
@@leomacherla Or just idk... land
@@angus_m Yes of course. But we were wondering what the pilots decision would be if they weren't able to
@Leo Macherla would probably try a different airport where the runways are facing a different way, or fly up to Scotland.
Yes honestly

bosh
These are the sort of passengers I dread having to sit near !
How come?
Lol, I know! Incessant inane chatter with a constant running commentary. I'd be putting my ear plugs in at this point.
@@indianairlines Haha they're just having a chat

Hey, come on. Be a bit kinder.

What shape and orientation are aircraft windows?
@@angus_m doesn’t matter!! Looks dreadful on a tv!!

very poor camera handling
vertical crap
We didn't film the video with the intent to upload it to UA-cam. We uploaded it as an experiment to see what would happen! If it were a video that was planned out then we would have probably used a camera and, of course, it would be in landscape. Portrait mode is the easiest on a phone
