Ainz's response of "Happiness" to Zanac was so significant and meant so much more than the anime had presented it and it added to why Ainz was so irritated when Zanac was betrayed. See when he said happiness it was accompanied with Ainz's thoughts that the longer he stays in this world the more he's realizing his friends are gone and that he'll never see them again which is very lonely for him and now his only goal is to create happiness with the NPC's who he sees as the children of his dear friends and the last thing they left behind. To Ainz, Nazarick is everything and to sacrifice everyone and everything to make them happy is how he's trying to create some semblance of happiness that he hasn't been able to grasp. So "Happiness" was such a meaningful response more than the anime could've expressed. That was the first time since Overlord started that he openly dropped his act of being the Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown but instead spoke to him as a normal person being truthful to his feelings as it's stated that he dropped his guard and spoke to him as he would speak to one of his friends. This was so important because this is the most truthful he's ever been since Overlord started because this is not an answer he could give any of the NPC's who he treasures so dearly because it doesn't add up to that 1000 year plan they think he has. So his reply of "Happiness" is possibly the most impact full thing Ainz has ever told anyone in Overlord which only added to why Ainz was so mad when Zanac was betrayed.
Ainz had planned to leave survivors when attacking the Kingdom, as he had promised to Nigredo and Pestonia, as he had done before with other places 😅 but upon seeing how the nobles behaved he decided to kill everyone, since it did bother him. Zanak's death, that's why at the end he says "I've already lost interest", "Cocytus and Mare are allowed to use all their strength, don't leave any survivors" if the nobles had not done that there would be survivors and those who resisted the attack would have a quick and painless death 👍 but because of them none of that will happen and they will be tortured forever, along with their partners and children regardless of whether they are still children and with their parents, regardless of whether they are elderly, regardless whether these were good or bad people.
The first part of that is misleading. His plan to appease the human sympathizers in Nazarick like Nigredo, Pestonia, and Sebas was that loss in episode 9 that allowed a safe passage for a small portion of innocent citizens to escape through, and the last part of this plan takes place next episode where Ainz has Shaltear and company smuggle out a small percentage of civilians out of the capital before it got wasted by Cocytus and Mare. When Ainz said he lost interest and just walked away that was more towards him taking part in the war since he promised Zanac he was going to use painless instant death spells to give the remainder of the kingdom merciful deaths. But after Zanac died, Ainz showed his displeasure by scrapping that basically saying I don't care just kill them however you want just make sure they all die
Zanack is a king who is always misunderstood by others.

The thing about Zanack is that his face, which appears sinister, seems to be a natural trait from birth. His behavior and actions are indeed suspicious, but he does all of it for the kingdom's benefit. If someone is born into a royal family, they must be cunning and skilled in planning for the future. Zanack's older brother, who was killed by Lupusregina in season 3, is an example of a royal family member who can be considered foolish and simple-minded. He was too open about his plans and lacked the ability to deceive. Princess Renner, on the other hand, is incredibly cunning and adept at concealing her intelligence and actions. She masks it with her extremely sweet demeanor. Zanack is in the middle; he can be cunning and plan well, but due to his appearance, he can be seen as malevolent and indifferent to his people.
The funny thing is that even in his first appearance he's not really a bad guy. It's just that he gives a bad first impression to the viewer because he's shown being at odds with Renner and at the time, Renner is the "pure princess" and Zanack is the "short and fat high-handed guy." In retrospect, the dude was just straight out telling it like it is. People talk about him being "redeemed" but honestly he was never really in a position that required redeeming, it was just the viewer's biased view of him.
I always liked how Zanack and Alicia are complete opposites. Zanac is the good guy who is misunderstood as a selfish asshole, while Alicia has this image of a genius Golden Princess when she in fact has manipulated the whole country from the shadows for almost a decade (yep, since she was a child) and was always motivated by her selfish desires.
Zanac is a bit like Eddard Stark, he didn't desire to be king for his own sake, he sought the power to help the people.
Ains liked him so much he wanted to spare them after the conversation and show mercy to the world.
That is how much Ains liked Zanac.
What Ains despises thet most is betrayal, disloyalty.
He stayed till the end in the game to met his friends again in hopes the would return and even if it was only a few minutes he could spend with them.
So showing the men he approved of such disrespect angered him beyond belief.

The nobles begged for their lives and Ainz kindly allowed them to live. A truly righteous ruler.

14:17 An important fact: the person who is speaking (the blonde with red eyes) is Clementine's brother 😅 I say this since the novel was more detailed about that conversation and they gave us a lot of information but the anime omitted many of those details, they were from the same unit but Clementine ended up going crazy because of all the missions they did, all the murders they had to do towards innocent people or races and things like that and that ended up affecting her too much to the point of going crazy but her brother not because of what she senses, because it seems Well, it's either that or he knows how to control himself better than his sister 👍
I still hope she reappears in the story.
Yeah, I seem to remember that clementines body went missing after the graveyard incident, much to Momon's surprise. It would be interesting to see if she has changed her ways. She might be a real threat, since she has seen Momon's secret identity. @@seynoonrae2474
exactly they hint to it in this episode with "i heard one of your members defected to evil" or something like that.. that was referencing clementine who used to be in the Black Scripture

I am not sure what you mean, but I agree either way. Joining Momon might be GOOD for the long term stability of the Sorcerers Kingdom, but I think "defecting to evil" referred to when when she stole stole that shaman Necklace and ran from the Black Scripture. As the self-claimed defenders of humanity, the Theocracy might be considered an anti-evil "good". But, since the Theocracy's Black Scripture is unscrupulous in their bloody ways, leaving them could also be considered GOOD. If, after being killed by Momon, Clementine turns over a new leaf as a docile girl who stopped killing for fun, then she might Actually be a GOOD person now (btw. I tend to think that the Theocracy recovered Clementine's body and resurrected her to extract information).@@demiurgos9800
The author said that if Nazarick hadn't intervened and Rener, together with Zanak, were to lead the kingdom as rulers then they would have greatly improved it and turned it into a great nation.
You might think Rener is "bad" or something, but she only cares for what Climb thinks of her. That's why she was making a lot of good changes for the commoners and the people in general, even if some of those changes were destined to fail it would still improve the way Climb looked at her. But, then came Nazarick and offered her a way better deal 😅
Under the situation that they, along with Gazef and Raeven were united. It never would've happened since Ainz is the only reason Gazef lived
Imo Zanac seems different in this episode because he had to step up and act like a king. His older brother was the heir before he died, his father is too old and too shaken by the events and his sister can't rule. He became "true royalty" as Ainz says and that's what made their talk so interesting and memorable. Also Ainz as a ruler hasn't spoken to this kind of man before : squad or tribe leaders, head warriors, an emperor but not a king. The author definitely did a good job showing how discussions vary depending on the ranks!
26:55 By killing Zanac the nobles lost the last chance they had with Ains for the Kingdom to at least survive. Now Ains has taken the leash off the Guardians and told them to destroy the Kingdom.
More importantly, for them, at least, they lost the chance of receiving a quick and painless death.
As Ains said earlier in Nazarick death is a mercy not often given, so Neuronist will be playing with those nobles for a long time, and remember that spiked stick was only the starting point I don't want to know what gets pulled out of the cabinets when Neuronist really gets started.
You asked about the movie. Don't have a release date unfortunately, but it will cover the time skip between episode 7 and 8 of this season. (Between the Dwarf arc and going back to the kingdom.)

The hero from the 'Black Scripture' who defected from the Slaine Theocracy has already been mentioned in season 1...
She was in that group, but left and stole a national treasure from a high-ranking religious/ political figure....
- The hero who left the Black Scripture was Clementine... who bears a striking resemblance to the current leader...
Prince Zanac hasn't really changed... but everyone's perception of him changes by this point...
Even though he's never done anything particularly bad, the audience gets a negative early impression of him...
The anime does this in two ways....
1. Prince Zanec has resting prick-face... he just looks smug by default...
2. When he's first introduced, Prince Zanec calls princess Renner a monster... he's right, but the audience doesn't know that yet....
If I was to ask you two at any point why you think poorly of him, you probably couldn't give a good reason... or if it was really early, you might say that he was a dick to the princess, but after she reveals herself to the audience, all you really have is his face...
He *feels* like a bad guy... but you don't really have a reason... this is the anime's trap....
Prince Zanek actually would have been a great king. He just had the misfortune of a father who was too much of a softie to control his nobles, so the nobles were constantly looking to make a power play and overthrow the royal family. Ainz actually greatly respected prince Zanak there and was absolutely FURIOUS about the prince's own nobles betraying him. Ainz is not evil himself, but, because Demiurge and Albedo are more intelligent and politically knowledgeable, Ainz follows their lead in these matters. But Ainz and even the princess never planned to be this extreme. The original plan was a civil war. And The Sorcerer Kingdom would have backed the peasants. But in the end, this more extreme method was what occurred.
Yeah, but it's not like Ainz really cares for what happens to anyone outside of Nazarick (with some exceptions like Gazeff, Nfirea, etc). He also doesn't get pleasure or actively seeks to do cruel things. But, if by making other people suffer he strengthens Nazarick and its inhabitants, he will do it without a second thought.
He said it himself in season 2: "I despise cruel acts when they gain me nothing". He is a "the goal justifies the means" type of guy.
He is definitely not a hero but he is also not a villain. He is just a ruler that wants the best for his people.

Zanac's death, his final thoughts and Ainz's anger at the end were more prominent in the novel and here's how it actually happened. Throughout Ainz's conversation with Zanac he continued to be impressed with how Zanac is able to carry himself given the circumstances. He doesn't think that if he was in the same position he'd be able to handle it as well as he was. By the end of their talk he stated that Zanac reminded him of how there's so much more Ainz has yet to to learn about conducting himself as a king or even royalty in general, and that Zanac was very "educational" so Ainz saying Zanac was true royalty is a short way of summing that up. When Zanac was betrayed by those nobles he told them that he even submitted the kingdom as a vassal state to Ainz but Ainz rejected the offer, and the words about how he thinks he wasn't meant to be king actually happened not on horseback but when he drew his sword against the nobles. That made it more heartbreaking that those were his final thoughts before he died and in his last moment in the novel before he perished the words "Happiness" Ainz told to him was the last thing he ever thought. Knowing that made things even more heartbreaking knowing Ainz's words to him was the last thing Zanac ever thought about. As for Ainz's reaction to this whole thing, Ainz actually knew what they did to Zanac before even seeing his head, he only called the nobles over so that he could confirm that Zanac had died and to punish them accordingly. Ainz also sentenced their families to be tortured and killed as well, and it was said Ainz was smiling behind that skull as a sick feeling of pleasure came when he ordered the suffering of their families. In the anime it sounded like Ainz had ordered Cocytus and Mare to kill the army however they wanted but in the novel it was a step further as Ainz ordered them to murder every last innocent citizen within the kingdom, it wasn't just an order to slaughter the army but an order to kill every last trace of life in the kingdom. Throughout this war Ainz was never actually mad at the kingdom, but in this moment he was genuinely enraged and the kingdom is about to feel his wrath.
Just like in the anime the massacre of the kingdom's army was not shown in the light novel the only detail given that wasn't told in the anime was that the army of 400,000 people the Kingdom had were completely wiped out by Cocytus and Mare in less than 1 hour

And thus ends the life of one of the bravest people in the entire kingdom.
The movie is set between episode 7 and 9 (I think) I know for a fact tho that its played out before episode 9.

Just like you Guys I hated Zanac from the beginning up until now, they wrote his redemption quick and well enough for us to respect him even if we hate him, he did not deserve that way of death.

In the LN the nobles mentioned if their families can come and Ainz ends up sending for their families to be tortured to death along with them. Don’t know why the anime omitted this but the English dub actually adds it. Probably because Chris Guerrero is actually a fan of the LN.
