Base Lovin 21 : Progression and Retrospective : Oxygen not included

- ONI is all about choice, how you chose to progress is a reflection of you and their is no right way to play. Don't ever feel bad about your base or designs, all bases deserve to be loved. Also my birthday is soon so it may interfere with Thursdays release depending on my hangover, apologies in advance.
I find it funny the two youngest bases had sour gas boilers. Players have come so far in the last 22 months it makes old playthroughs look positively silly.

15:05 I play 100% vanilla. Those metal pieces are just there for looks. The statue looked so lonely without them.
The rust deoxidizers are mostly for the iron early and mid game. Since I couldn't dig iron it was in short supply.
I also noticed in Francis' old base you could see some centrifuges. For the longest time I had a save of my first base where I still had them, though for some reason I removed them when updating it to a newer version of the game and saved over the old file. People can build some amazing bases, but having those relics makes the base interesting without even trying. I am super jealous.
And if Francis should see this; thanks for the love :)
@@eddyvluggen I don't use pliers no. You can still prepare pipes adjacent to each other and connect them without a dupe when needed. You just can't separate them without a dupe. If you need to separate a pipe and cannot allow spill or make use of a plumber then you can use bridges to force the flow to stop and either be used up before you break the pipe, or give it a dead end pipe to go into temporarily.
Yes, my base had sporechids.
@@eddyvluggen Well, that's rude. Didn't do it to impress you though.
@@eddyvluggen I said 100% vanilla because in the video when Francis saw my metal tiles he wondered if there was a mod he was missing. I was just clarifying that there is nothing missing, because I have no mods. I meant no disrespect to any mod authors and I don't think any of them would be offended by any player wanting to play 100% vanilla.
You were rude because you said "not impressed" out of the blue. Like if I walked up to you randomly and said "not impressed by your jacket". Why say that? Ok, you have more sporechids than me? I didn't know that it was a competition. If you are not impressed why say that to me? Now you are saying you loved my base? Getting conflicting messages here?!?
Probably my favourite base lovin so far; the retrospective caused me to look back at my own bases.
WHAT WAS I THINKING
Also, Happy Birthday Francis. Don't eat too much whiskey and drink too much chocolate.
Every time I play this game I say.. "What was I thinking?"
this game evolves so nicely I wonder when it will stop being "popular"
Wohoo! 22:05 one is mine :D
But seriously, how was that power brick staying cool?
@@paulwuersig Honestly, I don't remember. Stopped playing that map on cycle 862 according to save, and that was in early march.
@@Kris_Hagen I think you heat the crude oil and when you then take it through the refinary it cools down, because the refinary has a set output temperature I guess ???
@@ESSJohny Could be!
@@ESSJohny That's the thing with this series: some bases can be kind of old so you never know what rules they were made under. It definitely looks like it is using fixed temperatures even though today the refinery has a minimum rather than fixed output temp.
Also @Kristoffer Hagen
you are missing a tile in your bottomless Rodriguez which is messing up the oxygen separation, though of course it is way too late for me to tell you now XD
I'm sooooo glad you're getting time to get back into Base Lovin' videos!
indeed, love base lovin!
I love messy bases. The nooks and crannies to explore in make them feel like an adventure.
That first map gave me an idea of re-enacting greek underworld in ONI. Tartarus at the bottom as a powerhouse and void for suffering (has to have at least one dupe running in a wheel connected to nothing useful), Asphodel in the middle for ranching and farming, and Elysium at the top with ALL recreational buildings and perfect bedrooms, filled with decor items. Hmm.
Thanks for showing my base, and for the kind words about it. Also thanks for slow turn around on the base lovin, it inspired me to make videos to help others, so don't rush because you are getting too many submissions, grab a whiskey and post then when you want. Maybe others will make videos to show off their own ideas while waiting. Cheers!
This was fun, thank you. I have a lot of my bases still looking like your retrospective as I tend to try to deconstruct ideas I steal to really understand how they tick, which tends to make them bigger and bulkier than they need to be, but let me see all the moving parts. I picked up this game on a complete whim in June - the dupes looked cute in all the promo videos - and was immediately overwhelmed. I recall on my first play I couldn't figure out O2 production; I was thinking I needed to put in piping and vents like it was a commercial office or something. Now I'm 999.3 hours in (going to break that 1k in tonite!)...and I've not yet cracked into space because I still feel slightly overwhelmed. "I was told there would be no math." I still think the dupes are cute.
You've been a massive help with your videos and wanted to make sure you knew you're appreciated. I'm looking forward to your next one!
The cute art style is a big part of the draw for me, ngl. (And the lack of any real combat! Combat is all well and good but it tends to dominate any game it's included in, and I want to *build* things xD) Understanding designs for yourself is such a great time! I just built my first industrial brick, which is such a tiny thing, but I'm so proud of myself nevertheless because I get how it works now! I've been watching FJ's videos for months and it's the only thing that has gotten me past that utterly overwhelmed feeling of "automation?! I dropped programming at uni for a reason!"
25:59 Now that is what i call a "Moon Lord Rodriguez"
Loved you reviewing your old base, and the message you're sending with that.
ONI is about doing what you think is fun, not rushing to space just because everyone else is doing that.
It takes a long time to learn the game, but as long as you're having fun, it's worth playing. It's something that often seem to be forgotten nowadays, not just ONI. It's a single player game, do what you want to do, as long as you think it's fun.
Mad respect to the first map indeed. The only way to go like that is by either repeating the same map one more time or just having a general idea of how to build things before you even start cycle 1.
-- also yay sporechids.. finally see one in your videos :) that made me happy lol.. it's a bit hard to do those but oh so fun.
It was my first time on that map. I was hoping irregular oil biome would give me fossil and oil wells at the top of the map, and it did make things easier when I did.
I remember that Terra base. What a trip down memory lane lol. That base was the first time I saw a petroleum boiler, and thought they had to be absolutely massive. It's amazing to see how much you've improved since then.
I came up with a few new bits myself, but I stole a whole host of idea's from the comments and forums. This game has evolved so much it's crazy.
I'm stealing that thermium regolith drill setup. That's useful.
Simple solutions are the best.
Thanks Francis, I think this one may encourage me to send one of my newest bases in!
Oh, btw in case you are looking for new ONI series ideas, I'd love for you to do the 100K one. K As in Kelvin. It's a modded map type that runs stupid cold.
Happy Birthday dude! That 2nd base you showed, the one where s/he was trying to build in a more natural way... that one was amazing. I know you said it's not your thing, but I think it'd be an amazing challenge to see if you could do it.
You just want to see my brain hurt :)
Made me wonder if a vegetarian challenge would be neat. Must leave all animals in natural biomes/reserves.
17:50 is mine !
One thing you missed is that I used Smooth Hatches for metal refining.
Seems its your bday. Have a happy one dude!!
Now for the sweepers in a great hall. Drop a couple hatches in there, they eat any left over food and its 100 times nicer to look at. Pet hatches for the whole team 🤓
That's a great idea, okay I'm stealing it, standing on the shoulders of giants/ imitation is the best form of flattery and all that.
Do you just manually sweep the coal they excrete then, or do you have sweepers anyway and set them to ignore food?
@@thriceandonce I use infinite food storage, so dupes have no place to put food in, but if I convert them to coal, I can just set some storage bins to accept coal and dupes will automatically sweep the coal in the great hall and place them in storage bins.
@@thriceandonce what ivan says. Dupes take the coal to storage. Its such a tiny amount that it takes hundreds of cycles to fill 1 can with coal from 1 or 2 wild hatches.
Well time for you to take 35 minutes of my life.
was cool to see another ONI youtuber getting a shout out! tartarus plays games and francis john are imo the only ones worth watching for good ONI content. too bad tony advanced stopped making new videos :/
It's kinda refreshing to see maps that aren't just square builds for efficiency's sake... but at the same time running straight lines of piping makes me pretty happy.
Thank you Francis! Your content is always appreciated.
Happy birthday :D
I'm so happy you revived this series!
At 10:30 I use salt vines to prevent chlorine buildup.
Man I wish I had some of my pre-release base saves still. I had a piss-pit base that was fully self sustaining on PO2 offgassing and liceloaf with a geyser that so little of the water was used that a single wild wheezewort kept the temp ideal. It was a monstrosity to look at. I had terraces of mesh tiles braced by airflow tiles to catch polluted water from vomit and accidents to add to the o2 production.
Sounds wonderful :) this game has really changed over the years from the old moisture torture chambers.
Wow I remember when circuit overload wasn't a thing
So they invented the ice biome, metal refining and 1 & 2 kw consumption limit to wire and new wire
Man your vídeos know how to make me want to make more bases hehe
I have the name for the hydrogen generator bottomless Rodriguez oh, forever from this day forward I shall be known as the Martinez. You're welcome
when I opened one of my old maps first what I thought about - what a mess... and how nobody died yet on that base? ))))
The base with the automation was great.
Man... struggling with a boiler, seeing these bases makes me think I need to learn everything again...
i love this game
i like streaking rodrigez
The 450 cycle map; how much time was spent in the sandbox???
Showing the older maps goes to show how evolution works. People putting good ideas on top of other good ideas. The items that function get called out for their pros and cons and people move forward with the new knowledge.
None, until after this map I had never used sandbox. I used it to figure out and fix the broken pipe issue with this design. Once you start up the sour gas a few times its easy and stable. The petroleum side was a first try on this map, I had hoped to get 1kg/s out of it. once it settled over 4kg/s I shared it with Francis, then fixed the issues in sandbox and made my first video.
@@TartarusPlaysGames Dam! You are my hero.
damn, once I played until cycle 1500 and I even reached the telesope...
Heyo! For your next rn of this, may I suggest a massively overmodded run? Obviously all the good quality of life things, but also expnsion and things for decorating or just thrown in to be wacky. Honestly I just want to see whatmods you'll go with.
I still have a base from the time polluted water had a higher thermal mass than normal water, so I build a system to cool my base by boiling pee
ONI has had some really crazy mechanics you could exploit.
#NotifGang
Right now, I am well above 1k hours and I kept needing to start new colonies because I had been using so many mods and each time a new update happened, things changed and my maps deteriorated. I am on a 2 week vacation and as soon as I get home, I will make a brand new save with much less need to be modded (I WILL keep the water bottle filler to keep my supercomputers easy to fill without a pitcher pump). I am pretty tired of having to start over so I will be as mod free as possible.
Now just if there were a way to undo sandbox mode XD.
I can see someone making a base that causes nothing but misery for the Dupes.
“Where is it? Ah yes.” Love it
I would like to send my very first base, very old. It's like a nightmare. Only if you're planning to do "old bases" category of course
I almost feel like there should be a contest to see whose first base has the most grave stones. I just looked at one of my older bases. There's an atmo suit on the ground where Meep died - after being forgotten about on a neural vascillator. This one only had 2 graves (and 8 live dupes) at cycle 226. They're eating liceloaf. There's pollution everywhere. Oxygen comes from algae terrariums. It's a glorious disaster. I love it. I know somewhere I've got an early base with well over 20 graves. So much that I just preemptively built a whole cemetery area so they could be promptly buried when they died. Once I added the 'Falling Sand' mod, my death count plummeted.
Dead lord, now I have to do an old base lovin. I wonder what gems people have laying around in old save games. Tomb stone encrusted gems.
Hey Francis loving the base lovings! But far backlogged are you these days haha? Must be a while I guess since Ive been searching for my base for over 5 months XD (no diss btw I get the workload!)
alcohol biome... yummi :D
About 8:30 in that'd be a rust biome. Using rust to make O2 is one of the many reasons I love the forest biomes, others being the pips for planting stuff, the presence of Al and the the coldness of the rust biomes. Overall best map imo.
Btw.. can we have this series for Rimworld? It'd motivate me to start a new save and send in some wacky designs :P
I'm too lazy to build a rust melter, so I use dexoidizers to produce iron ore and vent the gas to space. I can live with 53% efficiency. It's still an insane amount of iron.
@@danbance5799 Haven't seen a rust melter yet, but sounds annoying. I personally prefer to use everything I can - iron ore for iron/steel, O2 for dupes, and Cl2 is nice for salt vines and other general uses. At the end of the day there's no point wasting anything.
@@Sheldezare A rust melter is essentially the same as a regolith melter. Our host did one some months back: ua-cam.com/video/maJjHxnWd7g/v-deo.html
Probably should have grabbed Badlands episode 20 or 21 instead.
if there is ANYTHING that can be mined....then it is not worth showing off! lol
sick
Wait a second! My old saves won't load earlier patches! They're gone forever...I thought
If you load an old save some things might break but it should still load.
@@FrancisJohnYT Nope. I have a whole list of blacked out old saves. Trying to load one simply gives me an error.
I noticed that you had some kinda rocketship thing when you mentioned "dupe training" and I don't remember that. I bought the game summer of 2018.
I submitted mine some months ago, I hope he features it!
i have been playing this game since way before launch, and i have NEVER made a rocket. suffice it to say i suck at this game, but it intrigues me so i play till i run into a spot where i kill myself, then start over with the goal of making if further next time. thus i have never made it to the space stage. although one day soon it may happen. hopefully. but until then, i will keep truckin along lol
Edit: by way before launch i mean before they even put in the germ update. i think that was the first update i experienced a lot of death that took me a while to figure out lol.
So I’m kind of new to the game and a lot of the information gathered has been archived, except for a few very high quality threads (ONIversity) and ONI assistant it’s actually pretty hard to find what you’re looking for or to even get started on a ‘true’ sandbox so you can try things out yourself.
For instance I’ve been looking to get started on automatic sorting and transfer akin to the save shared by Aelith, I know brothgar has done a video on this (God forbid page1 on Google shows anything else but that and you) but very basic questions on for example the auto sweeper pickup and delivery speed and just how many you can stack without them getting redundant have yet all failed to have been answered. Still very curious about the use of daisy-chained sweepers and dispensers, if anyone can forward me to where it’s been done before outside of regolith mining where the operational speed isn’t really the point, I’d be much obliged.
On your comment about the old save’s pipe layout being cleaner, other than the abundant bridge here and there (q: what’s the effect on performance between using a pipe vs. a bridge?) I think you tend to forego a very basic rule quite often: the shortest distance between two points is... Going by that standard really cleans up your designs a lot. Say for example what tiles are your thermal conductors, that’s where you use radiant structural elements, or from transport to delivery.
Anyway, I’m asking for a friend here... how2math and how2skool?
Unless the information is relevant to a build people are trying people usually don't bother testing something. I have spent a sill amount of hours testing things to see how they work. The auto sweeper is usually hooked up to a conveyer loader and since that is limited to 20kg a second the auto sweeper is over powered for it. As for dispensers the bottle neck is usually how many dupes can queue up at it, for example if you had to sweep 1000tons of stuff into it and the material was right beside it only two or three dupes should be able to access it.
However same scenario and put the materials far away and still only 2 or 3 dupes should be able to queue it up for use.
If you want to do some detailed testing I recommend using the debug mode, you can look up on the wiki how to access it. Without debug mode it's much harder to test everything.
@@FrancisJohnYT Thanks for the reply! Haven’t come around to playing the actual game yet with all the testing I’ve done in debug mode...
My current spaghetti recipe boils down to minimising the use of insulation on a liquid oxygen/hydrogen plant and still feed 3 full lines of hydrogen simultaneously. I’ll be sure to share when it’s worth doing.
As for the base loving videos, love ‘em, but could you please take the time to share the automation overlays as well? It’s not so much how it works rather than just how much is automated. Would love to fiddle around on some of these saves too, if you’d be willing/able to share the files and modlists in the description.
@@Mysterious_Old_Geek Save game files should be linked in the description if you want a look about.
@@Mysterious_Old_Geek Hey, I'm Aelith. If you somehow still got any questions a month later, I'm available.
@@R4d6 Still got plenty, thanks!
Say for example: what’s the deletion capacity of a vacuum tile of space? I’ve seen a fair few designs where pumping off gasses into space did not net the expected results, but instead filled a significant part of the biome.
Also say I were to try and cool a rocket silo with crude oil, how do I go about calculating how much I would need to control the temperatures and how many aquatuners it would then take to cool the resulting sour gas down to methane?
Do you have a video that breaks down how gas/water flows through pipes? like what controls the direction it'll go and tricks on manipulating it.
I don't have any tutorials on it, I though I made one but could not find it when I went looking. Found a decent one from another channel if your still interested.

@@FrancisJohnYT yes that'll work nicely plz, arigato
I'm at cycle 450 and I still haven't started going to space yet
Good artists borrow, great artists steal. 😁
havent seen the video yet but u got my like :)
I'm on cycle 1800 almost, and i barely have a functioning space program, I'm building a liquid o2/h setup right now, and i have 16 dupes.
Sounds good to me.
How would we go about sending you in a base Francis? I ended up doing an absolute zero mod playthrough by request of a friend (with lights out as a part of the challenge =.=) So surviving as my oxygen froze around me definitely made it an interesting playthrough with reduced stats to anemic levels without light.
Check the about section of the channel, it's listed as a business mail.
@@FrancisJohnYT Cool sent it in, and good luck that map was a mess and a half to deal with but it's surviving and hopefully in the future I can actually finish the playthrough.
pleas do not make me remember that i need to cool down my aquaturner by stiking wheezwort in it.... and brim still not created yet,,, i play this game from quality of life 3 if i am not mistaken.
I'm slowly translate russian)
Where can i send my base? I had one i was playing for a month, then after an oni update it became too laggy to play and i just stopped playing on it :/
Check the about section of the channel their is a email in there you can send it to.
@@FrancisJohnYT now that i think about it, it's better for me to get a proper base first and then submit it hah!
I have a whole bunch of old save files from back on the rocketry update and QOL 1 and 2, how could I send you some choice ones? Like you said in this video, we all learn how to design better by trying and doing, but man, thinking back on some of my old solutions to problems I made some very questionable design choices... might be fun to look back on! How can I send them to you?
Check the about section of the channel, the email should be hidden as a business email.
and then theres me with a 50 kg/s sour gas boiler just becuase
fine tuning u say...sounds like engineering to me
these generic "dig everything" bases are getting kinda old
take use of every resource on the map
Tartarus Plays Games, he's relatively new on the ONI vids scene but I like what he's doing.
Hear here. I didn't get passed 70 cycles for my first 4 bases.
My first base passed cycle 200, but eventually i stopped playing on it because it was such a mess.
Even the ladder i started building down into the oil biome basically went from the left side of the map to the right side, and then into the middle.
29:08 could also be Zukerberg or how ever you write the Facebook guy.
should be penalties for spamming statues too close together
That would encourage using different types of decoration for sure! Like how I wish there was a game mechanic that encouraged you to make different types of food. Eating nothing but barbeque must get boring xD
600k?! Gas reservoirs are 150k!
Mods most likely, I had to install dozens to get some of the saves to work.
I remember that this map used the x4 storage mod.
I cant seem to find a way to send in a save for a basereview?
Hi there can u tel me if my base got to u? i had trouble sending it
Did a mail search for Khk and Pck and nothing showed up. If that is not in your email what is the details of the subject line? I do not recommend putting your email address in the comments some bots will find it.
@@FrancisJohnYT i did send a mail with my youtube name in the subject line, btw thank for responding
Can someone enlighten me as to why its called a Rodriguez?
The dude who came up with the design is called Rodrigues. Iirc it was a reddit post.
Could you use a sour gas boiler that runs cold to make liquid oxygen/hydrogen?
Not really. Methane freezes at 182, at the same temperature that oxygen is liquefied, so you can't have both liquid at the same time, meaning there is no good heat exchange you can make. Well, you could help it along by using the methane/cold nat gas to pre-cool the o2, but there is very little gain. Oxygen is cheap to cool.
no, the condensation points for Methane, O2 and H2 are too far apart for liquids, though a freeze it all and auto sweeper could be fun to try.
When’s the next series?

Its a Gomez not a Rodrigez
