They say the pen is mightier than the sword, and authorities have often agreed. From outlawed religious tracts and revolutionary manifestos to censored and burned books, we know the potential power of words to overturn the social order. But as strange as it may seem, some numbers have also been considered dangerous enough to ban. Alessandra King details the history behind illegal numbers.

To all the Indians complaining that India's contribution to math is not mentioned. You guys need to understand that the title of the video is "History of BANNED numbers".
Yes, India invented many things from zero to the positional notation system and gave rise to many great mathematicians like Aryabhatta.
Do you know why?
It's precisely because India did not ban numbers. Its because India was the place where mathematicians could challenge themselves with complete freedom.
The fact that India is not mentioned in a video about BANNED numbers only goes to show how great of a place India was that mathematicians could practice without restriction and give rise to many modern mathematical inventions.
@அபிலாஷ் வாஸுதேவன் okay, but why are you looking at this minor issue while overlooking the one which OP is attempting to convey?

FistDaMonkey If you are talking about history before 1947, then be aware, that India was not so called India before 1947, it was given the name India only after 1947. Before Pakistan India Bangladesh used to make up 1 country, called subcontinent. And as for the mathematicians, I haven't ever heard any name of any great mathematician from the subcontinent, I heard of Al Khawarizmi and alot of great mathematicians from the side of middle east and the area above.

In some places, apparently the number 13 is skipped. Logically thinking, it's not like skipping over the number equates to a sudden cease of existence. If it does, whatever fears one has of 13 is simply in his/her head.
Even buildings just leave their 13th floors empty and not include them in elevators
I've only heard of hotels skipping over the number 13, which actually makes some sense because of superstitious people who wouldn't want a room on floor 13
@@GLUBSCHI, but that's the thing, there is still a 13th floor for a any hotel/building that holds 13 stories or more. It still exists, even if the people want to pretend it doesn't. If a malevolent spirit has so much power as to haunt the 13th floor, it will do so, and not be swayed because humans put a number 12, or 14, instead of 13.

Evolution of numbers: Natural numbers (counting) - Integers (adds 0 and negative numbers) - Rational numbers - Real numbers (adds irrational numbers such as pi and root2) - Complex numbers (adds imaginary numbers, like i, eleventeen and thirty-twelve).
That's not the order in which they were actually developed. Rationals came before negative numbers, and zero came later still.
I'm gonna make my own type of number and call them "fake numbers". Beat that, mathematicians! My numbers are even less real than yours!

Some numbers aren't officially banned, just avoided for superstitious reasons...like how some hospitals used to avoid having a thirteenth floor by jumping from Floor #12 to Floor #14, because #13 was considered unlucky.
I thought this was just an English cultural quirk until I lived on Formosa, where some buildings skipped Floor #4 for the same reason, "four" in Mandarin sounds too much like "death"? (四 --> 死)

Yep they have predicted squid game 4 years ago
So this Number is gonna be based off
The Knuths Up Arrow Notation as it is:
- Level 0: Counting (+1)
- Level 1: Addition (+)
- Level 2: Multiplication (×)
- Level 3: Exponential (^)
- Level 4: Tetration (^^)
- Level 5: Pentation (^^^)
- Level 6: Hexation (^^^^)
So let's start off with 2^5 = 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 32, 2^^5 = 2^(2^2^2^2) = 2^(65536), 2^^^5 = 2^^(2^^(2^^2^^2)) = 2^^(2^^(65536))
2^^^^5 = 2^^^(2^^^(2^^^2^^^2)) = 2^^^(2^^^(2^^(65536)))
HBUN(1) = 2^^^^5
HBUN(2) = 2(HBUN(1)^)5
HBUN(3) = 2(HBUN(2)^)5
Tip: Keep going on and on until you reach
HBUN(100) = 2(HBUN(99)^)5
Note: HBUN means Hector's Binary Upper Number
Function: HBUN(C) = 2(HBUN(C - 1)^)5
Size: This number is way bigger than G(64)
This moment when you see the first principle equation for calculating the derivatives
3:53 look, its a Pear computer, the future competition to Apple!
Interesting thought here.... Imagine someone is caught possessing an illicit digital image of a child. In reality, that image is just a really long binary number. Since a computer can use that number to generate an image we consider to be illegal, that number is infact "banned". Even further, because just switching a few (or a lot) of digits in that binary number still generates an illegal image, almost an infinante number of other numbers based around that number are also "banned". In a way, the crime the person committed is truly being in possession of a "banned number".
we still have to write out the amount of our checks in words to prevent forgery
I thought the title said a brief history of banned museums LOL but still very interesting.
