great video. For anyone not getting the key combos to work.. like CTRL+T and SHIFT+S.. activate the node wrangler add on. It comes with Blender.
@@HrafnNordhri how do i activate node wrangler add on?
Very cool and not difficult. This will be a big help, and I believe you can add in image textures as well for the gobo effect!
Yes you absolutely can! Also videos as well 💡
By turning the spread to 1 degree you are essentially creating an almost-sun lamp. Unlike other light sources, because the sun is so far away, the light rays that reach us are parallel, meaning the size of a shadow does not change with distance from the object casting it.
IES textures can also be really handy. They seem to only work on point lights, at least in my experience. There are plenty available online for free.
You're my savior! I was trying IES with area lights and asking myself why didn't it work...
Thanks! Short yet easy to follow along. The result looked pretty interesting too. :D
Man YOU ARE AWESOME!!! Love from Germany 🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
changed his life
Great! Same technique using lately in Cinema 4d, shadows and shapes make more difference ~
Absolutely, it’s so powerful and fun to play with 🔥
TL;DR
Add noise textures mapped to a black/white colorramp to an area light in nodes
Awesome! Thanks!!
Knew this but it’s definitely a super video for beginners! Simple and quick!
Loving the videos, keep going, it’s a fantastic job 😁
Thanks MBK! Yeah, I wish I had quick short tutorials like this when I was starting out 🔥🙏
I wanted this but i just think about it in my head and never search it then this video comes up!!! Does youtube observing our minds or you just sent by gods???!!!!!
Probably the first option lol
awesome
nice tip actually
Amazing, subscribed!
"colour" ramp LMAO xD
Can't help the Australian in me 😅
I wonder why you would say lighting is “super overwhelming” I really don’t see how? Anyway, thanks for the gobo explanation.
how do i do that thing where u get 2 screens with different modes
Can't seem to find the Beam shape property in my area light :S
im a student and we use maya..... i pray to god that there is some way to do this... i doubt D:
how to get the same result on Eevee?!
oh dear god no, the lights have node trees. god help us all
none of these keybinds you say do anything
ur camera is out of focus
NO CYCLESE PLEASE!!!!
"changed my life" - well that was pretty anti-climatic.
How this guy just gonna spawn in and change lighting for me forever
I gotta spread the word!
Same feeling
Connect the “object” in the “texture coordinate” to the “vector” in the “mapping”.
He forgot to add this step in the video
good eye
bruh
had me here for 2 hours wondering why it didnt work
Exactly.
thanks lol
which object ?
Gobo =. Goes Over/Behind Object, it's also known in the states as a cookie, which is short for Cucaloris. I work on set alongside the lighting team.
Thanks for the info
cool tip! For some reason my noise texture is not showing... but did follow all the steps...any idea what I could be missing?
EDIT:Connecting the Texture Coordinate node with the Mapping node through "Object" socket fixed the issue.
Yes, sorry I should have made that more clear in the video! 🙏
@@Smeaf You should probably pin this comment or put it in the description, it doesn't work otherwise!
You're actually the goat. Thank you so much - I was going nuts
He focused on GOBOs, his camera on the background🤣
And you focused on technical vs. the free value he created 😂🤣😂
@@DaveKatague true🤣 the Video is great, I was just joking
@@damndene7824 haha it’s ok everyone’s cool here! ❤️
Great video, I had no idea you could use nodes on lights, will definitely have to try it now
a lifesaver. just followed some redshift tutorials for C4D, making me wish I could do the same for Blender. I knew i could add textures to light sources, but changing the spread to 1degree- that was the missing piece. Thanks so much!
Yessir! It's amazing what some of the obscure settings can do in Blender!
thank you, you saved me an aunerism ;p
i dont understand, i do exactly the same as you do and it dosent work, i can't even see the effect of the noise texture no matter how much i switch it up
Protip, the gain on your microhpone is super high which is why it sounds like that. If you're using an audiobox, turn down the mic sensitivity and boost the volume in post
🙏 I’ll need to give that a try
@@Smeaf I'm not 100% certain that is the issue, but it seems like it to me. If you have a USB mic, you probably can't fix it like that. But if your mic is connected to an audiobox via a weird round connector and the audiobox is plugged into your PC via USB, then you should be able to turn it down no problem.
0:00 ah yes this video is really *focused* on lighting
Rule no1: Dont talk about fight club.
Rule no2: ALWAYS show the end result FULL FRAME and leave it there a couple seconds.
ps:nice trick
Good tip, just a bit more info on what each step was doing would be helpful.
if this technique is supposed to make my renders stand out of the crowd, and all the crowd learns this technique... how will my renders stand out of the crowd?
😰 I shoulda kept it a secret 🤐
@@Smeaf absolutely not 😄 excellent tutorial, short and sweet, the uniqueness comes from how everyone would use it, we are all different and have different tastes. Thank you for your videos!
Great Tutorial as always, Keep making such short and simple but important videos 👍
A question: Instead of the noise texture if I use the Image texture and select a png file of leaves will that give me shadows of the leaves?
Thanks Omkar! 🙏
Yes, as long as the image has a transparent background or alpha, this will work. 🔥
@@Smeaf Great!!!
Hey smeaf, I am a digital designer but still love your channel. What Gpu do you run?
This is disrespectfully good demonstration and tutorial man! Keep it up. You are sick with it!
Thanks Kenal!
after i did this lighting trick, my ex-wife called and said i could see the kids again
SHIFT S will not work in 4.02 not a problem just letting you know
I hope tNice tutorials makes sense. If you need more info, please feel free to ask. I'm new to tNice tutorials program.
relax bro, its just a gobo... it didnt changed your life, its not a super technique that fixes super overwhelming lighting problems... its cool nevertheless
Eevee fica mais realista usando spot light do que hdr notei isso, nem tudo fica legal no eevee as vezes e muito mais lento do que cycles
Tomorrow I have a Physics Exam. Yet I am here learning soft soft. I don't even know what I am.
If your light didn't changed at all, remember you have to use AREA LIGHT instead of spot light...
A good way to remember GOBO is "goes before optics"... Helpful in theatre lighting!
ctrl T does nothing [edit] actually none of these shortcut's work.
I think the problem is that the tutorial is outdated.
have you enabled the node wrangler add on?
I’ve been experinting and posting I tNice tutorialnk I’ve gotten pretty ok for my first year
Idk why but CTRL + T doesn’t work for me. I have node wrangler installed too
Make sure you have clicked on the principled bsdf shader and it should work :)
Thank you!
Im gonna cream
Any clue as to why this light shines straight through my blinds object without the blinds adding any additional shadow?
Check in the object properties that it is setup properly to have shadows. It may also not be correctly in front of the light source
@@Smeaf turns out the blinds were set up right but I needed to turn off shadows on the window object
I don't like to see a face in a tutorial video. I like to see only interface in a tutorial.
super clean! wishing this was in eevee but will def keep in mind!
MrBeast changed my life with this one❤
From this video I learned Shift S, noice.
Is this possible to achieve with Octane and C4D?
Absolutely, I'm not familiar with C4D's UI, however, the same principle applies.
You may just need to use an actual GOBO by placing a plane with an interesting pattern in front of your light source. Just make sure it has an alpha channel so the light can pierce through the GOBO holes!
It is already in c4d as an addon called light gobo from gsg
Great stuff. But music and sound effects distract.
In what version are you in ? There is so much option i don't have in mine !
Never thought of nodes on lights! Awesome!
I think I need to be 12 to watch these videos
Just found you. This is good. Keep at it , man!
Thanks so much! 🙏
Sorry. Not related to Blender. 😅What is the song at the end of the video? Thanks!
It's 'Sojourn - Phello' I get these tracks from Epidemic Sound and you can have a free month trial with this link if you wanna try it out too!

Great tip! One thing though:
Could you PLEASE fix the focus of your camera?
If I could turn back time 🫠
didn't know i can shade the light XD. thanks for the info
Great lesson, thanks!
PS Dude, you're out of focus
Lmao, yeah I’m painfully aware 🫠
Finally, a video that respect our time.
Super helpfull, thx!!!
I love the video, but just for joke bro by the tittle I thought you were a blender model/Texture😂
I don't have the light preview.. is that a 3.0+ thing?
Yes it is 🔥
Thank’s!
it change you life ? rly how poor
Hi, if the legend on the keyboard is not a texture, how you put it on?
Just using basic texture mapping :)
Just means you have to make the texture manually or get it online and slap it on the keys
I don't know if it is more realistic.
Please keep making these cool short videos!
Damm, best 2 minutes spent today
Ohhh that's pretty cool! Thank you!
not working wtf
Great advice! Thank You for that!
fix u camera already!!!!)
Easy and awesome! Thanks!
ilike it
I like you
Very cool thank you!
Meh Blendr
Hey I have a basic question, how can I put all the letters, numbers and that stuff into the keys?
0:45 I thought like "wtf is going on with blender that you were able to pull render with this kinda of quality!"
I don't know why I was missing the fact I could use nodes for lights. Thanks!
Amazing advice wow
you are the best dude
Nice tutorial.... Please what is your system setup.
U R GOD
I tried this, it works really well, thanks for sharing!
u r the best!
Hate that it has taken me so long to know this. This has changed my life
Thank you
Amazing 👏
