Band-Maid was founded by Miku Kobato - rhythm guitarist, vocals. She used to work in a Maid Cafe and wanted to bring the sweet/cute maid imagery to a hard rock band. She was going to sing lead but brought in another vocalist to allow for different styles of music. They really should be international stars.
You are not alone in wanting to go to a Band Maid show. Sometimes they almost play non stop for nearly two hours! The more people outside Japan make reaction videos to their songs, hopefully will spread the Band Maid magnificence and an international fan base will grow and they will get the recognition they deserve. I ask the same question... why aren't these women played and heard more!! The answer they are real musicians with great musicianship who control their songs, lyrics and the what goes into their albums and on their set lists. So you can't auto tune, sanitize or sterilize then so of course the main labels will avoid them. Look at the bands that are put up for awards and compare them to this band. Are you serious, those high school band players couldn't carry these women instruments never mind play them anyway near this level without a studio spending hours correcting every gaff!! These are real musicians who work at their craft and are never satisfied. They are always pushing one another to be better without any ego battles. LOVE this band, it is such a guilty pleasure to listen to a band that makes you feel great after the song finishes.

Thank you! Amazing live recording. Somebody knew what they were doing when they mixed the tracks allowing the bass to carry a large part of this tune. MISA (all caps) is the bassist and she can play that thing like a .... well, you know. I would love to have that wonderful sound rattling my bones at a concert. Next up, "Moratorium" for another great live video.
The way it's mixed on all these lives has lead guitar weighted towards the right channel, bass in the left, and vocals/rhythm/drums in the center. If you're trying to hear the rhythm parts just take off your right earcup

Yeah, that's why I love them. Having amazing instrumentalists is one thing, but you need a good composer and guts to let them do their thing and don't always focus on the vocalist(s) and the melody.

Japan has the market cornered on female bands. The ostensibly 'sexist' original idol culture gave women exposure to both the art and the business of the Japan music scene (2md biggest market in the world) and boy oh boy (or should I say 'girl oh girl') did that pay off in spades. There are so many great Japanese talented girl bands .... 'Scandal' is more popish; 'Gacharic Spin a bit' more heavy; Doll$Boxx (Gacharic Spin with a front women from another heavy metal band) a bit heavier, then Band Maid ... and beyond that there are some other really talented heavy metal all girl groups that if you're into metal will knock your socks off. I'm not really into heavy metal, but I do listen a bit to the Japanese HM, as the Japanese seem to always throw in ta bit of their own traditional tonal melodies and chord progressions that make it all sound so fresh and unusual to my western ears ... and like I've already mentioned, because of the idol scene they are all well trained in how to make music and put on a show ... unlike the western music scene that seemed to concentrate mostly on women being skimpily clad dancers that can hold a note to a two chord song (not to say there aren't great western female artists, but it's unlike Japan where the girls are almost equal, maybe even equal or passing, the males.)
Hi Ms. Z! They are all 5 just beasts at what they do! The backup singer, Miku, is the rhythm guitarist. She is also the principle lyricist and kinda eccentric- she thinks of herself as a “small pigeon”. Kanami is the lead guitarist and primary riff writer. She weaves lead riffs through the entire song! It’s like she’s soloing over and over and I love it! They work as a group on arrangements. The drummer is Akane- she keeps everyone on point. I think you might have a couple of confusions about the band largely due to the fact that the rhythm guitarist (Miku) and the lead guitarist (Kanami) dress and look quite similiar at a short glance. It is Miku on rhythm who does the back up vocals to lead vocalist Saiki. Kanami doesn't sing.... just shreds.

No, Band-Maid is the BEST BAND PERIOD. They just happen to be made up of all Female members. Japanese girl bands are absolutely KILLING it right now. Check out Lovebites, Doll$Boxx, Mary's Blood and a slew of others. The drummers in all these bands beat the living snot out of my drumming skills. I've got a friend that used to play guitar professionally when he living in Japan back in the 80s/90s and even he is blown away by these girls. Band-Maid is my preferred band for how they arrange their music. The drums don't just lay down the same 1 or 2 beats for the whole song. She'll play 2 or 3 per section and they arrange things so each change is a build up to the next. I'm not sure she ever stays in the same spot for more than 2 bars. It really keeps the music moving more than just laying down machine gun double bass that a lot of the other J-rock girls do. If you have not done so yet, check out "Take My Chance" by Doll$Boxx. That girl is multi-tallented. She also has a band/project she's the lead singer on. And she writes a lot of music from my understanding.

You need to check out Doll$boxx - Take my chance Aldious - We Are or Sweet Temptation Mary's Blood - Marionette There are lots of good female bands in Japan at the moment, yes Band Maid maybe the best but there are others not that far behind them.

Americans are jaded by badly produced bands and wooden singers.
I am an American from the Midwest, and our music sucks.
Nothing memorable, no hook really. Technically seems good though.
